Mary Szecsey This tour promises to be a unique experience as it is the only time of year that the resorts in West Sonoma County open their doors and gardens for touring by the public. We ask that you please respect the privacy of the resort guests and remember that the resorts are in full operation during this tour. After the tour, please take some time to learn more about West County Health Centers, a non-profit federally qualified health center, by visiting our website at www.wchealth.org. Thank you for your support, Mary Szecsey Executive Director, West County Health Centers 3 Letters of Support I am pleased to welcome you, and express my gratitude to all the sponsors, attendees, resort owners, and many volunteers whose work makes “Resorts In Bloom” possible. Special acknowledgement is due to the generous resort owners who have agreed to open their gardens and inns to the touring public for this fund raising weekend. Hopefully the individual character of the gardens and the wonderful western Sonoma County springtime climate will continue to lure appreciative visitors here for many seasons to come. Now, more than ever, our local community based organizations need our financial support…and this is a great way to give back while enjoying the splendor that we enjoy in West County. West County Health Centers is a vital institution in our community. The many health care programs they provide for our families have been an essential part of the community’s infrastructure for over three decades. The money raised from this event will help West County Health Centers care for our community’s most vulnerable populations. Please enjoy the bounty and beauty that West Sonoma County and these lovely resorts have to offer, and know that while you are enjoying this fun event, you are contributing to building healthy lives and communities. Efren Carrillo Supervisor, Fifth District, Sonoma County 4 Welcome and thank you for attending the Resorts in Bloom Garden Tour and supporting West County Health Centers! I would like to offer a full-hearted “thank you” to all of the sponsors of this event. This event would not have been possible without their generous gifts. I am proud to represent the Second Senatorial District, which includes Sonoma County, in the California State Senate. I have visited West County Health Centers in the past and have seen first-hand the wonderful work they are doing. I am also very familiar with the hard times facing California and how vitally important organizations like West County Health Centers are to maintaining a healthy and vibrant community. Although government is facing historic budgeting gaps, community organizations have continued on with their work and truly are an inspiration to all. Please enjoy Resorts in Bloom and thank you for your continued support! It is in the spirit of working together and caring for one another that our local communities and the state of California will prosper. Very Truly Yours, Noreen Evans California State Senator Second Senatorial District I am honored to be a part of this event supporting West County Health Centers. This continues to be tough financial times for this agency, as more and more people need their help and less and less funding is available to provide services. I want to thank each and every one of you for participating in this fundraiser to support their good work. From a law enforcement perspective, I view the services that West County Health Centers provides as important resources for keeping people affected by poverty and disadvantage out of the criminal justice system. We see incredible human suffering everyday caused by problems that access to health care could, in many cases, prevent. All of us envision a brighter future for our children, a healthy environment, and a safe place to live….thank you for working together to make that vision a reality for our community. I invite you to enjoy the beautiful gardens of West Sonoma County highlighted in this program and I want to personally thank you for supporting critical health care programs for children, seniors, and families in need. While you relax and soak in the natural beauty of our region, I encourage you to stop a moment and listen to the birds and take time to smell the roses. Inspired by a vision of healing, beauty, and inner peace, Osmosis was founded in Sonoma County in 1985. Our beautiful meditation garden allows you to savor the heightened state of sensory awareness and inner peace that often follows an Osmosis treatment. The Osmosis meditation garden is a serene, healing sanctuary designed to foster the heightened state of sensory awareness and inner peace that often follows a spa treatment. A pond, pathways, waterfalls, 60 tons of ornamental stone, and dozens of sculpted trees and plantings symbolize the awakening of a human soul to the place of peace at the core of its being. In the center of the meditation garden is a large pond. It is in the shape of the Chinese character shin, which means heart or mind, or both. A nearby waterfall connotes the end of the journey. Water, signifying consciousness, returns to the still, smooth pond that stands for the receptive emptiness that is the source of everything. The garden, designed by Osmosis owner Michael Stusser, Japanese garden design expert Robert Ketchell of England, with construction overseen by Zen priest Steve Stucky, abbot of San Francisco Zen Center, combines traditional Japanese and Chinese elements to symbolically represent the personal journey inward toward harmony and tranquility. 2 0 9 B ohemian Hw y, Freestone | (707) 823-8231 | osmosis.com 20 The Raford Inn The Raford Inn Bed and Breakfast, a designated historic landmark, is for lovers, romantics and all travelers interested in lodging at a truly unique place in time. This charming and inviting Victorian country manor Inn sits on a hill and presides over a fertile, unpopulated, and unspoiled Russian River Valley. The Raford Inn is ideally located at a gateway to the picturesque and abundant Sonoma County Wine Country near Healdsburg in Northern California. Built in 1880, this three-story estate manor house is an officially-designated historic landmark. The authentic Victorian-era French Colonial architecture still remains, including the original Queen Anne accents. Raford Peterson’s family lived here and worked the land for 100 years before it was sold, refurbished to modern codes and converted into an Inn. The original 1,300 acre property was once mainly planted with hops. Now vineyards prevail and the remaining four acres are a protected sanctuary for a house that is not merely a place to shelter travelers, but is also a home where the spirit of congenial country hospitality lives on. Come... enjoy the enclosed sunroom and wraparound veranda. Gaze through the towering palm trees across the grape vines and step back into the 19th century. “Farther from the modern world than the eye can see, yet only fifteen minutes from everywhere, we of the Raford Inn invite you to experience a warm and memorable visit to a time and place that has not quite yet gone by…” —Dane and Rita, Innkeepers 1 0 6 3 0 Wo h l e r Rd., Healdsburg | (707) 887-9573 | (800) 887-9503 | raford h o u s e. co m 21 n 22 E FRE ATO TOM L R STO E • V A RECEIVE PLANT A CO OM M N T THE S I O IS Recycle your vegetative kitchen waste in your GREEN yard waste can. Built by a prominent physician as his residence, the property has been an olive oil mill, a winery, a speak-easy, a stage coach stop and, since 1984, a bed and breakfast inn. Extensively renovated and modernized, the stately structure boasts five bedrooms and five and half bathrooms. Deeply rooted in history, this classic Victorian farmhouse was built in 1870 from redwood trees felled and milled on site. A prosperous San Francisco physician, Dr. Joseph Prosek, was an immigrant from Bohemia and a good friend of the Korbel brothers from the same area of Europe. Dr. Prosek and his wife Emma, purchased 200 acres along the Russian River, across from the Korbel Vineyards, and built the family home known today as Santa Nella House. “…hosts Bob Reeves and Betsy Taggart, will take care of you as if you were a long-lost friend, with homemade pastries and evening wine and cheese offerings. They offer advice on the best area wineries, and their off-season packages focus on romance, biking , canoeing, kayaking.” They also built a sawmill and an olive oil press. They planted olive trees, which did not flourish and later planted vineyards, which fared much better. For many years the Santa Nella Winery produced quality wines and vinegars. ... in the middle of nowhere ... and at the center of everything! — Midwest Air magazine As the story goes, Dr. Prosek and Emma occasionally visit the inn as friendly ghosts, dressed in their Victorian finery. The Inn is listed in the book, The Haunted Inns of Northern California. 12 1 3 0 H w y 1 1 6 , G uerneville | (707) 869-9488 | (877) 869-9488 | santanell a h o u s e. co m 24 Village Inn & Restaurant The Village Inn & Restaurant is a comfortable, casual inn located on the Russian River.
