By the time you read this the Fineblum Chapel renovations should almost be completed. While the renovations of the chapel are taking place the room in back of the kitchen is being turned into a storage area. Room 4 in the school wing is becoming the “new” Art Room. The Board of Directors is planning a dedication in April for all of these wonderful projects. I hope many of you will be able to attend and make donations to support this project. As of now plans are moving ahead to complete the repairs to Lake Sinai so we will have a parking lot, not an ice skating rink, this winter. Our neighbor, DeJana Truck Body, has been very cooperative in helping us with this solution. Also Bob Stout of Stout and Caldwell Engineers has been a tremendous help in aiding us through this process. Our congregation is very lucky to have many simchas coming up this spring. We have 15 young congregants who will become Bar/Bat Mitzvah. We haven’t had this large a group in years and we should take pleasure in this. Temple Sinai is HERE to carry on our traditions and teach them to the next generation. By attending the services led by our young people at this special time we are showing our children how much we value these traditions. HERE is where we want to be, where we want our children to be and where the future of Judaism in Burlington County will be. B’Shalom, Ellen Bring in your discarded cell phones, used inkjet and laser cartridges and place in boxes outside the Temple Office. Page 4 Seeking New Members for the Temple Sinai Board of Directors Each year at around this time a Nominating Committee is formed, headed by our Past President, to identify candidates for next year’s Board of Directors. Nominations are now being sought. Would you like to take a position of leadership next year as a Temple Sinai Board Member? The Board meets monthly to discuss and help address congregational needs and issues. Board members sit on committees to help implement some of the decisions made at the Board Meetings. Board members also try to have a strong presence at Temple Sinai functions and services. This is your opportunity to help steer our congregation’s future on a path which makes it a more rewarding experience for our members. We are looking for people who are committed to Temple Sinai, who enjoy working with a team, and who wish to influence its path forward. Please contact Ellen Goldberg Weiner at [email protected] to inquire or to express your interest. We look forward to Debbie being honored publicly in the Voice, the Fed Flash and on Facebook, culminating in a celebration on Saturday, February 27. Save the date. More details to follow. Being small, Temple Sinai is dependent on the commitment of its members and Debbie Broudy exemplifies that commitment. Debbie Broudy has been an active member of Temple Sinai for as long as she can remember. Her parents Albert and Joyce Cohen joined Temple Sinai when they first moved to Cinnaminson in 1966. At the age of five, Debbie attended Temple Sinai's Nursery School and continued in the Religious School program up through her Bat Mitzvah and beyond. All grown up and with a family of her own now, Debbie is devoted to giving back to the community that has helped form her into the person she is today. She has acted as the Gift of Israel representative for the synagogue for the past five years. She also served on Temple Sinai's Board of Directors. When the synagogue's beloved Rabbi Steven Fineblum announced the plans for his retirement; Debbie joined the Search Committee assigned with the difficult task of finding a Rabbi that could best fill his shoes. Representing the voice of those families with young children, Debbie worked diligently with her committee members to help find our new Rabbi, Boaz Marmon. Debbie has been a member of the Religious School Board for the past two years and is currently chairing the School Calendar Fundraising Campaign. She is happy to lend a hand whenever she can. Debbie and her husband Warren recently celebrated their twentieth wedding anniversary. They are the proud parents of twins Arianna and Logan; who are students in the TS Religious School program preparing for Page 5 their B'nai Mitzvah this upcoming June. All of Debbie's major life events: her Bat Mitzvah, wedding, the birth of her children, and even the loss of her beloved father and mother-in-law; have been shared with her Temple Sinai family. She is forever thankful for the deep religious roots and friendships that she has formed within her congregation Jewish Federation of Southern New Jersey Join Danny Bagelle this year at the phones volunteering for the Jewish Federation Super Sunday on Sunday, January 31. TEMPLE SINAI BULLETIN Tevet-Sh’vat– Adar I , Adar II 5776 By Rabbi Boaz Marmon Chaverim Y'karim, Schedules and climate conspire to have me writing about a springtime holiday before winter has even begun in earnest. The next big event on the Jewish calendar is Purim, which falls in late March this year. Before turning to Purim, let me give a little attention to the months preceding. First of all, the period of this bulletin almost exactly coincides with our reading through the book of Sh'mot (Exodus) in our weekly parashot. If, in broad strokes, the book of B'reishit (Genesis) told the story of the birth of Humanity, and its (Noahide) covenant with the Creator, and the birth of the Jewish family, and its (Abrahamic) covenant with the Holy Blessed One; Sh'mot tells the story of the birth of the Jewish nation, and its (Mosaic) covenant with the Rock of Eternity. While one could argue that, of the Five Books, D'varim (Deuteronomy) has the greatest influence on Jewish Theology, it is surely Sh'mot that contributes the most to our conception of ourselves as a people, and of our relation to God. Please feel invited – if you need an invitation – to join us in shul weekly as we read, discuss, and enjoy these quintessential Jewish stories. On the Jewish calendar, Tu B'Shvat falls on January 25th this year. Have you ever wondered why we celebrate the birthday of the trees when most of them are dormant? For much the same reason that students are promoted a grade while they are out of school for the summer break, or that the (secular) day changes while most people are sleeping. This keeps each harvest associated with a distinct year, which has some ritual implications, for instance in the rule of orlah, which forbids eating the fruit of a tree's first three years. Page 6 Because this is a Jewish leap year, the month of Adar is repeated, and Purim is celebrated in the second Adar. This means that aside from Shabbat and Rosh Chodesh, the beginning of the month itself, there are no holidays in the first Adar, which will also result in no annual Jewish holidays falling in February this year. The second Adar, however, will include not only Purim, but the bar mitzvah of Andrew Siverio (March 12), the first in our bumper crop of bnei mitzvah this year. Purim is a fascinating holiday, with depths that can be hidden beneath the farcical elements of the Megillah and the jolly carnivalesque manner of its celebration. For this year, I will give you this to think about: Purim is the only holiday that celebrates Jewish life in exile/diaspora! The story raises many questions that still resonate for us specifically as diaspora Jews. Does the book support or oppose assimilation? Mordecai refuses to bow to Haman, but he saves the king and later becomes the vizier. At Mordecai's suggestion, Esther hides her Jewishness, which doesn't just mean that she didn't order the kosher meal plan in the harem. Esther not only marries the non-Jewish king, she participates in the "contest" to be his bride. This troubled the sages greatly; they insist she had no choice in the matter, though the Megillah seems to suggest she actively competed to win. Another matter: throughout the book, the Jews are in fear of annihilation; at the conclusion of the book, the other peoples within the Persian Empire fear the Jews. Are these the only stable states of Jews in exile, or can we live in peaceful acceptance among our neighbors in predominantly non-Jewish society? How are the conditions for Jews in America, Europe, and other parts of the world like those of Purim's Persia, and how have they changed? Contact David Caplin at 609-200-4236 or [email protected] You are Invited to Help Fill a Minyan at Temple Sinai. Our tradition requires a Minyan (a quorum of 10 Jewish adults) at various times and occasions—for example, when we read the Torah or recite certain prayers. And among those prayers is the Mourner’s Kaddish, something we all know is especially important to those of us who have lost a loved one or who are observing a Yahrzait. Friday night and Saturday morning Shabbat services are the only opportunity to perform those tasks. We all have responsibilities to family and work. And as Jews, we have special responsibilities to each other. Among those is to be present in community (Kehillah) to maintain our tradition and support each other. Now is the time to be counted. Join us on a Saturday morning and help to make a Minyan. Do you receive the by email? More often not, they will say the number 7. For ‘lucky 7’ is the world’s favorite number. There are seven days of the week, seven colors of the rainbow, seven notes on a musical scale, seven seas and seven continents. Snow White ran off to live with seven dwarves, there were seven brides for seven brothers, Shakespeare described the seven ages of man and Sinbad the Sailor had seven voyages. And when Ian Fleming was looking for a code for James Bond, he didn’t go for 006 or 008. Only 007 had the right ring. Numerous references to the number 7 are found throughout history in religions, cultures and ancient civilizations. It is believed that the importance of the number 7 began in ancient times. During the time only 7 planets were visible. The Greeks, Romans, Egyptians and many other cultures had 7 gods or deities. The list goes on. Sara Debbie Gutfreund wrote an article, “Transform your weekdays with the gifts of Shabbat”. In it she lists 7 ways to end the Monday Blues. I recommend to your consideration one or more or all to be tried. And, remember, Temple Sinai is here to help you succeed. 1. First things first. Shabbat reminds us what is most important in our lives – spending time with our family, paying attention to our children, talking with our spouses, reconnecting with God. We can bring this awareness of our priorities into our everyday life and examine our schedules to see if they reflect what we value most. 2. Elevate the physical. When we say Kiddush on Friday night and sanctify time itself, we learn how to elevate the physical world and recognize the infinite within the finite. We can use the material resources Page 8 we are given each day to reach beyond the surface and reveal the inner depth and meaning in the world. 3. Share with others. Shabbat is a gift we pass along to others by having them at our tables, sharing the precious peace and warmth of the day. We can continue doing this all week by sharing wisdom we have learned, by reaching out to someone in need, by offering a listening ear and by having the courage to smile first. 4. Be in the moment. Shabbat gives us a unique opportunity to put away our phones and turn off the distractions and noises that surround us all week. It gives us a chance to be present, to take a step back and think about what we really want out of life. We can learn to do this each day – to take a moment each day to be present and think about what we are living for, to turn down the noise and listen to our hearts. 5. Gratitude. Shabbat teaches us to be grateful for the creation of the world, for the family members, for friends around our tables and for all the blessings that we have in our lives. Bring this gratitude into the week and appreciate how God not only gave us life but continues to give us life each day. Focus on all the goodness. See the sunrise. Learn to see blessings each day. 6. Learning. Shabbat gives us time to learn and search for answers, to appreciate the wisdom of Torah and how it gives direction and purpose to our lives. Bring this wisdom into the week. We can learn, even for small blocks of time, each day. Ask new questions. Keep searching for answers. 7. Unity. Jews celebrate Shabbat and share in this special gift. We realize that the Jewish people are one that the labels and differences that divide us are unimportant compared to the beauty and love of our people. We can bring this unity into our week and remember that we are all connected to one another and responsible for each other. TEMPLE SINAI BULLETIN Tevet-Sh’vat– Adar I , Adar II 5776 A Glance at our Religious By Marcia Blacker Being Role Models for your Children: Some of you might remember President J.F. Kennedy’s speech in which he said, “Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country”. This is true today about our synagogue AND our school. When we ask parents to help, even in small ways.Did you send in a box of tissues? Did you send in something for your child’s Hanukkah Raffle basket? Did you come in to help us collate the new Hebrew books? Do you sneak out when we need 1 more person to make a minyan? I love our students candor and enthusiasm but what of our parents? I love walking around and talking to the kids. A group of five in the elementary level told me last week what classes they liked best and suggested others they would like to have. They were all positive and sincerely enjoying what they were learning. Are you, as parents, as positive? Are you a good Jewish role model for your children, giving them the tools they need to carry on our traditions? Your child is the future of Judaism! When picking them up from class, are you asking them what they learned showing them that Judaism is of importance for your family. Bar/Bat Mitzvah Boot Camp Saturday, Feb. 6 @ 9:30 AM MANDATORY for parents and students in HH/Bar/Bat class. Many of our families are sending their children to Temple Sinai only so they will be Bar/ Bat Mitzvah. But what is it really mean to be Bar/Bat Mitzvah? Please come as a family to this Bar/ Bat Mitzvah Boot Camp. All are Welcome. . Page 10 Temple Sinai, preparing a new Hebrew Curriculum for our students: "Hebture This", a new innovative program to learn to read Hebrew for all ages, was created by our Religious School teacher, Nava Gutterman. Ellen Goldberg Weiner, Rose Rose and Shari Hyder have been working hard copying and Danny Bagelle, Lisa Bungarden, Tammy Bobrin, Wendy List, Melissa Schrier and Terry Zablin have been making books out of the copies so they are ready for our children to learn from. It has been no small feat and we appreciate all of their help. Temple Sinai, giving our students experience taking leadership roles so that they will be comfortable on the bima. On Friday, November 13th, we held our first Family Service. Students chose parts they wanted to lead. Most of the prayers were done by 2-3 students, while a few were done by 1 student. Those not leading will do the December service. The theme for this service was Jewish Book Month and book and author reports were on display. Temple Sinai, teaching our students to care for the Torot Neil Yerman, a Sofer, (Scribe) from New York State visited us on Nov.15th to give our students a hands on lesson on the Torah. Students learned how to clean the Torah, how it is written and put together. It will become our children’s legacy to care for the Torot in the future and keep our history alive. This was a very meaningful program. Temple Sinai, celebrating Chanukah with our Students— In November our students went Hanukkah shopping in the Judaica shop, enjoying picking out gifts for their families. Our Hanukkah Party in Dec. was a fun party thanks to the Men's Club under the direction of the talented Robert Bliss. The kids loved watching and then participating with the Philadelphia Circus School students. Mike Wise provided his excellent co-MC assistance to the program. TEMPLE SINAI BULLETIN Tevet-Sh’vat– Adar I , Adar II 5776 We thank Dorothy and Harold Minkoff for the yummy treats. They were assisted by Rachael Wise, Tammy Bobrin, Julie Mackinnon, Dina Severio and Julie Wimmer. Morah Sara’s music class performed a few Debbie Friedman Hanukkah songs which were new, different and delightful. At the Hanukkah celebration, drawings were held for the 3 prize baskets put together by Morah Sara’s Mitzvah Classes. Each class picked a theme for their basket , which they then filled with prizes. Tickets went on sale in November for the drawing on 12/13. Winners will be announced in the flyers and School News. And now we come to a brand new year, 2016. TEMPLE SINAI BULLETIN Tevet-Sh’vat– Adar I , Adar II 5776 NEWS By Becky Siman "The fabric of our lives is woven together by Mystery," says Rabbi Yael, "and our task is to notice the patterns and colors, the shapes and textures and seek to approach each encounter, each experience with Truth, Forgiveness and Love." Just look, at Temple Sinai, almost every day, someone from Sisterhood is in the building doing something. Ever wonder how the food gets purchased and put out for the onegs? Who coordinates the brunches and many of the events? Who runs the gift shop? Sisterhood makes up a active portion of the fabric of the synagogue. Sisterhood! We had several interesting events in the last quarter of 2015. If you were there, you had a great time, if you were not there, you missed some special times. In October Charlotte Stein chaired and Rose Rose hosted a Torah Fund lunch in honor of Rhoda Freedman, who added shape and texture to Temple Sinai over her lifetime. Thanks to Rose and Charlotte and their committee for putting together a delightful afternoon. We also had a Prayer Writing Workshop on October 18th, led by Rabbi Yael Levy, with funding provided by the Jewish Community Foundation where we took apart some frequently recited prayers and looked at them in a contemporary way. We also had time to write our own prayers based on input from our lives. Page 16 The first Sisterhood/ Men’s Club brunch was with local Author, Patti Sheehy and the hero of her book, Frank Maderos. We had an informative brunch hearing how a young man escaped from Castro’s Cuba and made a good life in the US. Thank you to Janet Khanlian who suggested the book, Lois Schmeidler who coordinated the event, and to all of you who worked in the kitchen and helped to set up and clean up – Nancy Schwartz, Donna Orliner, Vida Gaffin, Nina Einhorn, and Dorothy Minkoff. (Sorry if I forgot anyone) November found us shopping at Finally the Perfect Gift which raised some significant funds. Thanks to Margo Rosenfeld and her committee of Janet Singer and Alison Atz. On December 7 we had the Paid Up Membership dinner with more than 60 participants. We welcomed in person new members Sara Asbell, Diane DiFazio, Merle DiVento, Dee Herrmann, Barbara Nochumson, and Marcy Rosner. This event was staged by a huge group of people who wove their talents together. Thanks to Esther Bliss and Sue Karen for chairing this event and bringing together many helpers including: Dorothy Minkoff, Gail Siegel, Nancy Schwartz, Janet TEMPLE SINAI BULLETIN Tevet-Sh’vat– Adar I , Adar II 5776 Singer, Elaine Pinchuk, Barbara Fineblum, Shelly Hassis, Alison Atz, Ellen Dix, Kathi Horowitz, Julie McKinnon, and Pam Kenwood. Many special thanks to Lois Schmeidler and Margo Rosenfeld for running the recycled home décor area and to Margo for procuring gift cards from merchants around the area which we were able to auction off to raise money for the Fineblum Chapel Renovation. Shelly Hassis outdid herself with centerpieces of individually designed and hand painted boxes which were also part of the auction. Who can forget our Men’s Club servers Hank Croft, Fred Berman, Rob Karen, Harold Minkoff, and Robert Bliss who also was our entertaining auction MC. Page 17 Sisterhood Shabbat Service Friday, January 22 Don’t forget Sisterhood Shabbat is January 22, 2016. Let me know if you would like a Hebrew or English part. This is always a fun Shabbat evening. Contact me at [email protected] The Temple Sinai Sisterhood & Men’s Club presents… Sunday Brunch, Feb. 21 @ 9:30 AM featuring a speaker from the Israeli Consulate. The big fund raising event will be May 3 when we will host Designer Bag Bingo. Tuesday, May 3 Todah Rabah Gadol to all. In December, Risa Zablin, Trish Beck, Lynn Grobman, Janet Singer, Ellen Goldberg Weiner and Diane DiFazio volunteered at Barnes and Noble in Marlton to wrap gifts on December 13. Happy shoppers made small donations for our effort. It was a fun afternoon. A man even came over to the table to discuss how to make a brisket with us, as he had made one which didn’t turn out too well. Mid Atlantic Women’s League brunch At Temple Sinai Sunday, January 31, 2016 @ 9:30 AM - NOON Women’s Issues in Israel. Please make every effort to attend so you can see what Women’s League is about. This is fun evening of Bingo where you can win a beautiful pocketbook. Designer handbag bingo events are very popular, but it will only succeed if you invite your friends from outside Temple Sinai to attend. Please also volunteer to help set up and clean up that night. We can use your help on the committee. Jill Croft is chairing the event. Keep watching your email and Happenings for updates on additional events. As always, if you have an idea for an event, let me know and we will see what we can do to make it happen. Can be reached on 609 304 6098 or [email protected]. Please become part of the fabric of Sisterhood and encounter new people and new experiences. TEMPLE SINAI BULLETIN Tevet-Sh’vat– Adar I , Adar II 5776 " Finally The Perfect Shopping Event" On the night of Thursday, November 19th we held a Sisterhood fundraiser entitled " Finally The Perfect Shopping Event". It took place at the boutique aptly called "Finally The Perfect Gift"! What a night it was for all the shoppers who attended! The shop was filled with great buys for trendy fashions from jeans, dresses, scarves, purses, shawls, belts, shoes, hats, camies, leggings, jewelry, tops, etc. as most ladies found some things for themselves, or others on their gift lists. There was plenty of food and wine to keep everyone happy and energized for their shopping skills. Raffling tickets were taking place with some very exciting chances being made available to spas, restaurants, and museums in the Delaware Valley. Lots of camaraderie prevailed, as women shared a true sisterhood experience of having fun together talking, being together in a social setting, and of course shopping! Thank you to my outstanding team: Alison Atz, Kathy Horowitz, Rose Rose, Lois Schmeidler, Becky Simon, & Janet Singer. Thank you to Fern Pogust, Proprietor of " Finally The Perfect Gift" and her staff. Thanks to the businesses that contributed to our raffles: "Brio Tuscan Grille, Bahama Breeze, Monsoon, Tres Yan & Wu, Robin's Nest, Seasons 52, Victoria's Nails on Larchmont Blvd./Mt. Laurel, Adonis Beauty Salon in Marlton, Breakthru Massage & Physical Fitness, & JDR Shoes", and to special museum donors. Please patronize these establishments and let them know how we appreciate their support. Of course a big thank you to all of the shoppers that came out and supported our event, without whom there would not have been the success that we had accomplished! After all, it takes a village...( what a great quote, wish it were mine)! In conclusion, we succeeded in making a nice profit for Sisterhood and having a lovely time doing it! Until next time, Shalom, Margo Rosenfeld, Chair of Event Page 18 THANK YOU October 20, 2015 was a chilly but sunny day when 21 women entered the home of Rose Rose. A blue and white balloon was to be placed on the front door however, they flew away when the car door was opened, and landed on a neighbor's tree. Unfortunately not too many women looked up to see them. The occasion was Temple Sinai Torah Fund luncheon in honor/memory of Rhoda Freedman. There was a large variety of different foods, drinks and desserts including schnecken made from Rhoda's recipe as well as comradery. We embraced the Women's League theme of NAT'AH KAREM, "she plants a vineyard" by her own labors" honoring hard working women. Becky Siman gave a presentation of a variety of foods of Jewish origin as well as similar foods of other nationalities which were and are still served in homes and restaurants today. Our Jewish influence is world wide as are other various fields of our endeavor. Those in attendance/contributors: Janet Kirschner, Barbara Fineblum, Carole Cills, Esther Bliss, Vida Gaffin, Lyn Stein, Marcia Blacker, Elaine Mendelow, Rochelle Hirt, Nancy Schwartz, Lois Goldberg, Rita Wood, Ellen Dix, Faye David, Sara Asbell, Dorothy Minkoff, Becky Siman, Audrey Saffirstein, Elaine Emmer, Donna Finkelstein, Allison Atz, Charlotte Stein, Rose Rose, Nina Einhorn. Thank You again for supporting Temple Sinai and Women's League for Conservative Judaism . Torah Fund Cards can be purchased for $5 each or purchase five (5) cards for $15.00. Individual cards will be mailed at no charge for postage the very next day after contacting Charlotte Stein, [email protected] or 856-6421007.
