Yarm Preparatory School Issue 451 Friday 5 December 2014 Visit the Prep School Pages:- Head’s Message . . . www.yarmschool.org The Christmas season is definitely upon us! It is lovely to see the Christmas trees up, the Grotto assembled in Pre-Prep and piles of gifts generously donated to the Mission Christmas appeal appearing around the school, thank you for your support of this worthy cause. We are fortunate at this time of year to have a staff team who keep all of the children well on track at this busy time. We are marching to the end of term with much excitement and satisfaction after a fantastic term’s work with much progress made! The Christmas productions thus far have been wonderful and my thanks go to the staff in the Pre-Prep for helping the children put on superb performances. Next week it is the turn of the Year 3’s in their Christmas production on Monday night, the Prep School at the Carol Service on Wednesday night and at pick up on Thursday we have an informal carol sing along in the Hall, I do hope you will be able to come along to these events; they are always very special indeed! I am looking forward to the Yarm Prep School Social Committee Ball this Saturday in the Auditorium. I would like to thank the team for their efforts to get us organised for this event, there is a great deal of preparation that goes into making the night a success ; I am sure it will be great fun! Head’s Challenge: A goldfish costs £1.80. An angel fish costs £1.40. Nasreen paid £20 for some fish. How many of each kind did she buy? Follow me on Twitter: @HeadPrepYarm Bill Sawyer The Art Day! Name the Bear! On Tuesday we did an art day with other children from another school. We drew shadow people with pencil on our own and in the afternoon we did some team drawings. There were 5 people in my team and we made a life size drawing of a person. My favourite part of the day was making a plasticine person. Takumi I, 5S We have a lovely Barnardos Bear in the Prep School Office! Guess the name of the bear (50p a guess) to win the Bear! Bears can also be purchased for £15.00. Miss O’Hara COMPETITION LOST PROPERTY A school coat belonging to Charlotte Scott has gone missing. If you have any lost property, please return it to the lost property shed, which is on the playground next to the music room. There will be a lost property assembly on Wednesday 12th December. Any remaining items will be left in the gazebo on the Quiet Area for you to check. Plan and create an original recipe for a main school lunch! Think up a well-balanced meal, which should include meat and uses fresh ingredients. The best and most original meal will be put on the school lunch menu in the new year. Write your recipe and ingredients on a piece of paper, making sure you put your name on it, and hand it in to the school office. The winner will be announced at the end of term. CLOSING DATE: 8 December 2014 Year 5 and 6 Poetry Competition Final Last Thursday saw an excited Year 5 and 6 herding into the Hall for our annual Poetry Competition. The nerves were positively palpable. The impossible task of judging the performance of each poem was bravely taken up by Ivan Limon the librarian at Yarm Library. Ivan was very impressed by both the high standard of the delivery of the poems and the complexity of the content. Our children are to be congratulated on their sterling performances and for providing us with such an entertaining Poetry Final. Well done children. Amongst them all was the 200m Freestyle title. Well done Matthew! Under 9’s Rugby—TEAMWORK LEADS TO A STRONG FINISH! We got off to a slow start at the Cundall Manor Rugby Tournament on 26th November 2014 with our first two games ending in a defeat against Cundall (4-2) and Bronte House (4-3). We also lost to Barnard Castle (2-0) but that defeat turned on our fighting spirit and we worked as a team to achieve amazing victories against Ampleforth (5-2) and Moorlands (6-1). If your child has any successes or experiences from outside of school they would like to share, please let Mr Stone know ([email protected]) We all enjoyed our trip to Cundall Manor and cannot wait until the next fixture. Rugby at Twickenham! On Saturday more than 82,000 fans went to Twickenham to see England play Australia in the final International Test Match of the year. Before the match there was a minutes applause for Philip Hughes, the Australian cricketer who died a few days before. Once the game started the atmosphere inside the ground was electric and the crowd were cheering the England team on by singing “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot!”. Australia were first to score with Bernard Foley kicking an easy penalty. Soon though England did the same with George Ford making it 3-3. For most of the rest of the game Australia’s back line dominated possession and always kept the ball alive and passing the ball from left to right looking for an opening. However England’s forwards were stronger than Australia. Two excellent tries by man of the match Ben Morgan kept England always in the lead and even though it was close the final whistle blew and the scoreline read England 26 Australia 17. Lochlain L More Stockton Festival Success! We had a very successful day at Stockton Music Festival last weekend. Through the course of the day, Yarm pupils gained seven 1st places and seven 2nd places. The children performed very well and decisions by the adjudicator were not easy in some classes as there were many winning performances. The children all looked very smart and bowed beautifully at the end of their performance, so I was very proud of them all. The younger children played all their pieces from memory, which was commented on by the adjudicator. Results from the piano classes are as follows: 9 & under duet 1st place Summer Benzie & Lilian Dufton 10 & under solo 1st place Sarah Mhando 2nd place Summer Benzie 11 & under solo 1st place Summer Benzie 12 & under duet 2nd place Lexie Speight & Sarah Mhando Mrs Bury The Week Ahead After the long term we are now down to the final week, as the Christmas excitement starts to build! The highlight of the last five days is undoubtedly the Carol Service. A letter regarding this went home earlier this week; there is a copy on the school website if you missed it. Not to be overlooked is the Year 3 Christmas Show, which is taking place on Monday for parents. Judging by the wonderful singing I have been hearing next door to my office, you will be in for a treat! Our thanks to Mrs Arrol, Mrs Jennings and Mrs Jones for putting this together. Friday sees out school Christmas service at Yarm Church. As well as the usual carols and readings, there will also be a couple of musical ‘treats’ for the children; I am sure you will hear about these next Friday! Please note: this service is for the Prep children and staff only. The Spring Term calendar has been finalised and will be sent out in term card format on the first day back in 2015. We will also be running a ‘live’ and downloadable calendar on the school website in due course—more on this at a later date. A reminder too that the end of term reports will be available via the Parent Portal next Friday. If you would like more details on how to use this, please drop me a line at the school.
