Summer facilities work will improve learning experience: Bay Middle School sixth-grade mathematics teacher, Lawrence Kuh, has students work on a real-world problem: how you prepare for and find a job, and then design a budget that lets you live within your paycheck. “But more than that,” Keener said, “teachers are continuously showing students what success in skill building will look like with Student Learning Objectives. They are stressing that students must show evidence of their thinking in how they arrived at answers and conclusions. And they are collaborating with one another across subject areas so that the required skills are practiced in every subject. Math skills and reading skills are used everywhere, not just in Summer math and English classes.” 2014 (Continued on page 7 … ) • A new media center at Westerly Elementary will provide modern research area and more computer access. More improvements: • Restroom renovations throughout the district will make maintenance and cleaning easier. • New seating and carpeting in the Bay High auditorium will enhance audience enjoyment of our wonderful student performances. That flexibility will allow another year for younger students to build their keyboarding skills.” The district participated last year in a pilot program where students tried out the online tests. “The tests are extremely interactive and engaging,” Keener said. “They will be challenging, but they will do a better job of showing us what students have actually learned.” Practice question samples are publicly available at http://www.parcconline.org. Nov 26, 27, 28 Thanksgiving Break - No School Dec 22 - Jan 2 Our transition to new Ohio Learning Standards St. Baldrick’s “shavees” left-to-right: Front Row - Jason Martin, Michael Clark, Connor Huntington, Jared Hengst, Kyle McPhillips, Tom Schemrich, Jack Rodman; Back Row - Billy Judge, Joe Cheney, Scott Stelter, Tim Garner, Andrew Taylor, Molly Harkness, Elyse Legeay. Not pictured: Nick Best, Will Huntington, Andrew Majercik. Bay High students raised $20,000, doubling their ambitious, one-week goal of $10,000, to help fund promising cures for childhood cancer through St. Baldrick’s Foundation. Contributions were collected through cash, checks and online donations, and a top motivator was the promise of art instructor Thomas Schemrich to shave off his longtime ponytail hairstyle, which he says he has worn almost always since he was 15 years old. Bay High’s Youth Philanthropy Fellowship (YPF), along with Bay High’s Student Council and Key Club, sponsored the fundraiser. Students having their heads shaved were Nick Best, Michael Clark, Tim Garner, Molly Harkness, Connor Huntington, Will Huntington, Jared Hengst, Elyse Legeay, Andrew Majercek, Kyle McPhillips, Jack Rodman and Andrew Taylor. Staff members being head-shaved included teachers Joe Cheney, Billy Judge, Jared Shetzer, Scott Stelter and the school’s principal and YPF adviser, Jason Martin. The Village Barbershop in Bay Village supplied two barbers to do the work, and hairstylist Regina Warblock and an assistant cut the girls’ hair, which was donated to Locks of Love for cancer patients. “Virtually all the fundraising was done by the students,” said Principal Martin. “We had a couple side raffles for staff and parents which contributed some funds, but the overwhelming majority of the money comes directly from donations.” He says he believes this was the most funds raised in one week in the history of the school. “Never forget you can make a difference,” Martin told the student body. “And never forget the power of an idea. This whole event started when Emmy Korte, a senior, stopped by and said she had an idea for a spirit week that she thought would be a good fundraiser. Then Will Huntington and Kyle McPhillips said, ‘We think Bay High School should become involved with St. Baldrick’s.’” -2- Martin pointed out, “This year we have adopted the ‘One Rocket Nation’ motto. This motto represents our pride, spirit and unity. All of these came together this week, and the end result was amazing!” Ohio’s New Learning Standards in math and English language arts are based on the Common Core Standards, developed at the behest of the nation’s governors, and were developed with the participation of college and university scholars, business professionals and K-12 educators. Ohio has also developed new standards in social studies, science, technology and other academic areas. Hear why Dan Sebring (Normandy Elementary principal), Char Shryock (curriculum director) and Lawrence Kuh (6th grade math teacher, pictured above) support the new Common Core and Ohio New Learning Standards. View their appearances in the National PTA Common Core video series at: http://bit.ly/NationalPTACommonCore. One School, One Book sends students a positive and fun message about reading Normandy Elementary students in Kindergarten through grade 2 learned that reading a good book can be an wonderful experience shared with friends, teachers, families and neighbors. Principal Dan Sebring brought the One School One Book program into the school, but he went far beyond just having everyone read the selected book. At first, the title was a closely guarded secret, while the build-up to the “big reveal” had students engaged and intrigued as to which book they would soon be reading. Video clues were shown the week leading up to the book’s unveiling. When “The World According to Humphrey” was finally announced, the book’s main character, Humphrey the Hamster, made a live appearance at a kick-off assembly for the students. The book’s author, Betty G. Birney, also addressed the students through a pre-recorded video just for them. Humphrey himself (played by Bay High student Matt Szekely) then whipped the young students into a frenzy as he teased them by videoconferencing with Mr. Sebring from landmark locations in Bay Village. Early detection and services help children reach potential The Bay Village City School District seeks to identify, locate and evaluate all children from birth to age 21 who may have a disability. Disabilities include conditions like hearing and vision impairments, speech and language impairments, specific learning disabilities, multiple disabilities, mental retardation, autism, traumatic brain injury, emotional disturbance and other health and physical impairments. BayVillage businesses and organizations hosted Humphrey posters (students earned stickers by spotting them) and the adults talked to students about the book. The program generated true excitement about reading. View the video for more details at: www.bayvillageschools.com/OneBook Search for children with disabilities Anyone who knows of a Bay Village child who may have a disability and may need special education and related services can call 440-617-7300. District officials will talk with the parents to determine if an evaluation is necessary. -7- Community Scholarships and Bay High School Awards COMMUNITY SCHOLARSHIPS Amy Mihaljevic Memorial: Morgan Cooley & Rachel Poretsky Bay Alumni Foundation: Colleen Kowalski, Shaley Stearns & Robert Ziebarth Bay Band Boosters: Brynne LaRiccia & Elizabeth Veres Bay Class of 1966: Grace Harms Bay Historical Society: Pawel Kotowski Bay League of Women Voters: Henri Adams & Alyse Arko Bay Men’s Club: Victoria Hamilton, Abriana Holzworth, Pawel Kotowski & Shaley Stearns Bay Rotary Club: Abriana Holzworth Bay Skate & Bike Park: Jake Fowler & Austyn Vovos Bay Teachers Association: Emma Jarvi, Jessica Leusch & Rebecca Moorhead Bay Village PTA: Elizabeth Auckley, Emma Jarvi, Colleen Kowalski, Emily Mach, Rebecca Moorhead, Shaley Stearns & Anna Woos Bay Village Women’s Club & Foundation: Victoria Hamilton, Grace Harms, Abriana Holzworth, Kelsey Reilly, Shaley Stearns & Robert Ziebarth Bradley Bay Nursing: Cassie Szekely Coca-Cola: Edward Hughes & Elizabeth Weber Curt Crews: Evan Kelly Eleanor Kellam: Katherine Randazzo John T. They are stressing that students must show evidence of their thinking in how they arrived at answers and conclusions.
