Hungary in the footsteps of Deaf Nation’s traveler Joel Barish In May 2012 Deaf Nation chose Hungary as one of their destinations to discover. They came to explore Budapest and the countryside and to indulge in the life of the Hungarian deaf society. With the support and contribution of the Hungarian National Tourism Office, the Hungarian Association of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, as well as several tourism service providers, an excellent program awaited our visitors. Local travel: ! ! Hotel Astoria by coach or minivan Day 1 After a short orientation tour of the city, cook your own lunch in the restaurant of Budapest’s beautiful Central Market Hall. In the afternoon visit Europe’s second largest Parliament building and while getting acquainted with this architectural wonder learn about the Hungarian coronation jewels, the most precious relics of the Hungarian people. To make the day perfect dine on the highest spot of the city, enjoy the meals and the view as well. Day 2 Visit Gödöllő, the most beautiful Baroque palace of Hungary where Sissy, empress of Hungary lived some of the best days of her life. Before having a real Hungarian lunch experience a traditional horse show at Lázár Equestrian Park. In the evening enjoy the flamenco dance performance of Deaflamenco Group and have a dinner in Rétesház Restaurant where you can learn how to prepare “rétes”, one of the Hungarian delicacies. Day 3 Soak in the thermal waters of Széchenyi Baths, then have lunch in one of the Castle District’s restaurant and taste the “Hungarian pizza”. Walk among the oldest buildings of the city, take a photograph of the Fishermen’s Bastion and climb up to the tower of Matthias Church. Visit a Ruin Bar and enjoy a dinner with wine tasting. Day 4 Visit the Herend Porcelain Manufacture, where you can also meet the deaf ladies who paint the beautiful plates and vases. After lunch return to Budapest to meet the man who prepares the best soda water in the city and once you have drunk enough of it head to try and make “kürtős kalács” the Transylvanian festive cake. To complete your Budapest experience get on a dinner boat and enjoy the sights of the illuminated capital.
