Sanford School of Medicine Nationally Ranked for
Producing Family Medicine Physicians
SSOM has earned an Achievement Award from the
American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) for being
one of the nation’s top schools in family medicine. According
to the AAFP, 15.2 percent of the school’s graduates have
entered an ACGME-accredited family medicine residency
program – a statistic that places the SSOM within the top 10
schools in the U.S. for producing family medicine physicians.
“Family medicine has always been a critically important
part of our mission,” said Mary Nettleman, dean of the
Sanford School of Medicine. “This award serves as an
affirmation of our strong tradition of maintaining the
highest quality in family health care throughout the state
and beyond.”
The school was recognized by the AAFP during the
Society of Teachers of Family Medicine Annual Spring
Conference held April 27, in Seattle.
Cherise Dunn Begins as New Pathology and
Transitional Year Coordinator
Cherise Dunn began as the new Pathology and
Transitional Year Program Coordinator on May 22.
With both Kristi Tuschen and Mary Sutter leaving, SSOM
decided to combine the coordinator positions for those
two programs. Cherise has been able to train with both
coordinators before they leave.
Cherise has a history in health care, most recently
working as a scheduler and route coordinator for DMS
Health Technologies, Inc., a mobile diagnostic medical
imaging services provider. Before that, Cherise worked
for Sanford Health in a variety of areas, including the
Nephrology Clinic and the Hospice Cottages.
Cherise may be reached at 605-357-1386 or Cherise.

Mary Sutter Retires June 15
After 12 years working for the Sanford School
of Medicine, Transitional Year Program Coordinator
and GME Administrative Assistant, Mary Sutter is
retiring June 15.
Mary plans to spend time gardening and
taking piano lessons (or, as she puts it, retaking
lessons with the hope that she is more willing to
practice now than when she was a kid). She also
plans to take Osher Lifelong Learning Institute
classes, volunteer and spend a good deal of time with her
grandchildren, Shelby and Noah. “I wholeheartedly agree
with the statement, ‘God saved the best for last –
grandchildren,’” she said.
Mary says she will miss the people she has
worked with, especially her Transitional Year residents.
“I cannot say enough about what a great place
this has been to work,” she said. “I have thoroughly
enjoyed my job. The people are wonderful, and we are
treated very, very well.”
A farewell celebration for Mary is planned for
June 15 at 3 p.m. in HSC Rm. 106. A brief program will be
given at 3:30 p.m.

Kristi Tuschen Leaving Pathology Residency
Pathology Program Coordinator Kristi Tuschen is leaving the residency and the Sanford Health Pathology
Clinic June 22 to begin a new adventure in Brainerd, Minn. Kristi started working for LCM/Sanford in 1997 as a
transcriptionist. In 2001, she took over the administrative position for the Pathology Clinic and the coordinator role
for the Pathology residency. Best of luck to Kristi!
Wachira Wins Scholars’ Day Event
Kelly Wachira, Internal Medicine PGY2, was
announced the winner of Internal Medicine’s
Scholars’ Day event held May 10 at the Wegner
Health Science Center. Kelly’s presentation was
entitled, “Coronary to Pulmonary Artery Fistulas in
Bacterial Endocarditis: A Rare Incidental Finding.”
In regard to his winning presentation,
Kelly writes, “Recently the ACC/AHA revised
previous guidelines for prophylactic antibiotics
for bacterial endocarditis. This includes patients
with congenital heart disease. In this particular
patient and under current revised guidelines, she
didn’t meet criteria for prophylactic antibiotics.
Could it be that she had sub-clinical congenital
fistulas which were exacerbated by bacterial
endocarditis, which potentially could have been
prevented by prophylactic antibiotics? And if yes,
should we review and change current revised
guidelines for this cohort of patients (cogenital
heart disease) to prevent future complications?
My personal opinion is yes.”
Each of the IM PGY2 residents submitted
both a poster and scientific paper, as well as
presented to faculty and other residents during
the event. In the past, the winner of the event has
gone on to present their poster at the American
College of Physicians’ (ACP) state meeting. Kelly’s
poster will be automatically submitted to the
national ACP competition, which will be held in
San Francisco in April 2013.

Morris and Team Win Geriatric Simulation Wars at AGS
Geriatrics fellow Mary Morris and her team won the Geriatric Simulation
Wars at the American Geriatrics Society Annual Meeting held May 1-6, in
Seattle.
The Simulation Wars consisted of four teams with five fellows each. Two
teams competed against one another on a case, with the winner of each
competing in a final round. Mary’s team handled cases concerning metastatic
bone cancer with pathologic fracture and Alcohol DT. The audience and
judges picked the winner of each round. Mary and her team each won $100.
“It was great to ‘team up’ with fellows from around the U.S. and get to
know them better,” Mary wrote. “It was a wonderful experience that I will
never forget!”
Mary’s team is identified by the green shirts. Left

Houston; Ajay Gupta, North Shore-LIJ (NY); Anna
Chodos, UCSF; Mary Morris; Ardeshir Hashmi, Mass
General.
