RACING
LINES
Armstrons-wilson
bycharles
Everyone here at Pembrey would like to extend
a very warm welcome to you today. And whether
you are here for the first time or on a return visit,
we hope you will enjoy the programme.
We have a varied field from single-seaters to
roadgoing saloons and from various Italian road
cars to Sports GTs.
So whatever your tastes there should be something for you and you should see good, close club
racing at its best.
CHURCHILLCONSTRUCTION
SPORTSGT RACE
The comparatively relaxed rules of the Churchill
Construction Sports GT Championship allow
e n r r a n l sl o u s e s o m e v e r y u n u s u a l a n d p o t e n t
machinery. Past rounds have included such cars
as David Ellis' Aston Martin V8 and the Rover
engined Lotus Europa of Richard Gamble.
But ihe car that is currently sweeping the
boards is John Churchill's own Ford Cosworth
DFV engined Lancia Stratos. Further down the
field the Imp-engined Davrians will be holding
their own and, in particular, look oui for Rupert
Russell.
FORMULAFORD 1600
TROPHY RACE
This is a race organised purely for this meeting,
and not as part of a championship. Close racing
will be the order of the day with no one playing
safe for championship poinis.
'85
Some of the entrants from today's pre
FF1600 race will be taking pari and Steve
Parker in particular will be worth watching.
Others to watch are David
Davies
from
Bridgend in his Van Diemen RFBS and David
Llewellyn of Bargoed in a Van Diemen RF89.
Both these cars are newer than the rest of the
field and should, in theory, be quicker. Be ready
for a hard fought race.
BRSCC ITALIAN INTERMARQUE CHALLENGE RACE
The intermarque race is exclusively for ltalian
cars and to allow them to compete on an equal
footing there can be as many as eight classes.
Rouers and Copris contest C/oss A of the euer populor Slick 50 Road Saloon Car
Chamoionshio.
These range from CIass A where the Ferraris and
their like hang out, to Class H for more mundane
Italian saloons.
It is the latter class that has produced the
current championship leader Bill Stilwell who
races a 2-liIre Fiat Strada. But Paul Edwards in
Class G is not far behind, driving an Alfa Sud Ti.
When the flag drops all Cars will be on those
lovely Italian engines being driven hard.
BRSCC MODIFIED SALOON
CAR CHAMPIONSHIP RACE
'60s
'70s
Back in the late
modified
and early
saloons were in their heyday and few who remember that time will forget Gerry Marshall
hurling his Vauxhall, known as Big Bertha, around
the circuits of Britain.
The BRSCC has tried to recreate that era with
their championship for steel bodied saloons with
highly tuned engines.
The man to watch must be Class A leader
Brian Chatfield in his 3 litre Capri, while the
overall championship leader is Marc le Maitre
drivino a Mini Coooer S.
BRSCC/MTNTSTER RACING
ENGINES PRE '85 FF16OO
CHAMPIONSHIP RACE
It is often said that there is nothing more
worthless than an outdated racing car. It was on
'85
this basis that the Pre
championship was
formed.
With the current rate of development in Formula Ford, any car built before 1985 wouid be
hopelessly uncompetetive in current classes,so
these cars are given a new lease of life allowing
racing on a much tighter budgei.
At the time of writing, Tony Garside in a
Reynard FF84 is leading the championship, but
with just 10 points covering the first four places
that could easily change.
SLICK 50 ROAD SALOONCAR
CHAMPIONSHIP RACE
Class A
This championship was conceived to allow
people to race competetively in their road cars
and has become incredibly popular calling for
two separate events.
Class A is for the big cars and has become
totally dominated by V6 Capris and Rover V8s.
Terry Harris from Cheltenham is currently
leading in his 3.9-litre rover Vitesse.
Hot on his heels is Charles Street of Harrold
in his Capri. Whoever wins. the sight of these big
engined machines hammering around the circuit
should be worlh seeing.
SLICK 50 ROAD SALOONCAR
CHAMPIONSHIPRACE
Class B
Blake Edwards' Ford Copri: one of the contenders in the BRSCC Modified Saloon Cor
Chomoionshio.
As the other half of the Slick 50 championship, this was also intended to provide cheap
racing between roadgoing cars. Racing is dominated by the hot hatchbacks. in particular, the
Volkswagen Golf GTi.
Golf racer Salvador Valiente is leading the
championship. but he is being persued by Mike
Devine in a Vauxhall Astra. determined to break
the domination of the German Machines. He. in
turn, is being chased by Martyn Skipper, again
in a Gold GTi
