GM has the ignition switch issue. Seems that at least 124 deaths have been caused by this switch. But it depends on who is doing the figuring. If you’re GM, the deaths only count if the switch caused a crash that can be directly linked to killing the driver. If the switch caused the car’s engine to quit and the driver’s loss of control caused the car to go into a ditch, and the two passengers were killed because the airbags didn’t deploy, well, that’s 1 for the switch and 2 for the airbags. Worldwide, this is 30 million cars. And speaking of those airbags that didn’t work, there are 30 million vehicles in the US that are being recalled, over several brands of cars. And an additional 7 million cars in other less safe countries where the rules don’t require airbags. And how about those folks at Volkswagen, the world’s biggest car company? They came up with software for their diesel cars that detect when a car is being smog tested...and turn the smog systems on. When the car’s off the test rack, the smog system is turned off und Gott in Himmil! Vee have zee power! Along with 40% more pollution than VW said the diesel produces. As you know, this was not some accidental goof in engineering. This was done on purpose, to mislead buyers and state and federal agencies. Affected cars in the US? About 480 thou. Worldwide? We’re talking 11 million vehicles. If they were Japanese, they’d commit suicide. And over at Tesla, which has hemorrhaged money since day 1, a new e- SUV has been announced. The Type X, with “falcon doors” at the rear. Kinda gullwing-like, only more like a falcon, I guess. Anyhoo, if ya want to buy one of these babies, you’ll pony up probably 100 large. But the Feds will give you a $7500 tax incentive, and here in loopy California, you get another 2500 bucks. But wait! There’s more! There’s an IRS law that states if a vehicle weighs more than 6000 pounds, it qualifies for a $25 thousand, yes, that’s THOUSAND, dollar tax credit. This was supposed to incentivize farmers to upgrade their equipment. Now you know why you saw so many of those Hummers from GM. But I have a fix for this mess: VW should buy Tesla, thereby getting them out of the red. They should then rebadge the Model X into VW’’s and offer them as an up-trade to US diesel owners, who keep the $35k. The rest, they export to countries that don’t require airbags And GM? Who cares? -Bob Gough, Y’r ‘umble Ed’tr The Newsletter of the Mopar Club/San Diego www.moparclubsandiego.net Car show madness!!! OCT 2015 Mopar Club of San Diego Monthly Meeting Sept 9 Yeah, our big event, The All-American Car Show XVII, was held in a record rainstorm in July. Who would have thought? Anyway, only 50 or so cars that were pre-reg’d failed to show up, leaving a sizable field of very nice cars. Their owners supported our raffle, and with the prereg entry fee checks in the bank, we were able to award Homefront of San Diego and USO of San Diego $4500 L to R: Bobby Woods, USO; Mary Ann Tanner, each. It must be noted, however, that HomeFront; and Jeff Walker, our Prez a lot of the money that was raised due to Clubmembers efforts: entering a car(s), Clubmembers contributing 20 bucks or a raffle prize of equal value, and our auction of stuff from plants to baked goods at the past three or four meetings. A special tip of the Mopar Club cap top Joe Bourdage, who seems to buy most of the baked goods. And this year, Prez Jeff Walker suggested an additional $500 be donated each to the Warrior Foundation-Freedom Station and Wounded Warrior Homes, both of San Diego. Yeah, our car show is a lot of work. But don’t these donations make you feel good? JBA Speed Shop Sun Oct 11 Tom Ziarkowski was there with his Cuda, as were Bill “HemiBoy” Baugh and Milton & Chavonne Karahadian, both of whom performed nice burnouts behind Mark Maynard, automotive writer for the U/T, on their way to the 5th Avenue Show. Pal Joey’s Sun Oct 11 Rick Bobick was the sole representative from The Mopar Club, as everyone else signed up for 5th Avenue. But Rick’s ‘65 Gen III Hemi Dodge in Plum Crazy paint took a big trophy at this, “The Best Damn Car Show In Town”. ProFile Dave Russell’s ‘66 Cuda leads a row of winners onto the race track for their Victory Lap All-AmericanCoronado Speed Festival Some 20 Clubmembers volunteered to run the Car Show & Car Corral Gate at the Speed Festival Coronado at North Island Naval Air Station as part of Fleet Week 2015, Sept. 19-20.
