activity center Fall is in the air, you can feel it! As the leaves fall from the trees, the air turns chilly in the day, and the days grow shorter and shorter, you may find yourself starting to slow down and have less energy. It is a feeling we get every Winter. At Little House, there are several activities to keep us physically fit, socially active and mentally alert throughout the cold and dark months. This Fall , we have introduced an expanded line -up of classes during our evening hours. There are fitness classes such as jazzercise, two types of yoga for strength and relaxation; and ceramics, drawing and printmaking classes to satisfy your artistic desires. We have also bolstered our educational programs by offering multiple language classes at every level from beginner to conversational. Also being introduced is a study in Anthropology though the art of collage. This class will take participants through an artistic process that will generate personal revelations, cultural linkages and discovery of common stories. Look for more information regarding classes at Little House in the pages that follow. So don’t wait until tomorrow to take advantage of one or more of these programs that are being offered! Stop Kidding Yourself! Giving time gives you time. Little House According to new research published in Psychological Science, people who volunteer actually feel like they have more time in their days. Little Shop Customer Service Front Desk Reception & Greeters Community Service Desk Café Lunch Servers Meals on Wheels Drivers Once a week or on-call For more information visit www.penvol.org/volunteer or email: [email protected] or call 650-322-0129 The research article, titled “Giving Time Gives You Time,” found that helping others increases our feelings of time affluence. So even though we can’t expand the 24 hours we have each day, volunteering makes us feel highly effective and capable, translating to a more “full” and accomplished feeling in our day. The study also discovered something many volunteers already know: giving time is addictive! Once we experience the “fullness” one can gain from volunteering, we are more likely to give our time again in the future. In addition, giving time makes us more willing to commit to future engagements, despite busy schedules. ATTENTION ALL VOLUNTEERS!! No time to be a Meals on Wheels volunteer? That’s ok. Here’s another way to help! PENINSULA VOLUNTEERS DINE OUT FOR MEALS ON WHEELS IS TUESDAY OCTOBER 16TH Participating restaurants will donate 10% of your check to our Meals on Wheels program. Be sure to check in at the front desk under the GREEN volunteer tab to record your volunteer job and hours! Mary Rached, Director Community Volunteer Program (650) 322-0129 Take it from a Volunteer… “It’s easy to say why I volunteer at L.H. It’s the people. I’m fortunate to have an opportunity every week to see and talk to people who have become friends over the years. I might have thought when I volunteered I could somehow be of help wherever needed, but it has become apparent I am the one who has benefited. I have so many friends who I met at Little House.” Edie Broadwell, Little House Travel Desk and Café Cashier Lead Volunteer Volunteers Grow Community Spirit! Community Resources MEALS ON WHEELS By Marilyn Baker-Venturini, Director of Meals on Wheels By Marilyn Baker-Venturini, Director, Peninsula Volunteers, Inc. Meals on Wheels THE DARK SIDE OF SALT Sodium is a mineral that occurs naturally in food and is essential for health. Salt, or sodium chloride, is the main source of sodium in the American diet. Several vital body functions require sodium, such as: maintaining hydration, transmitting nerve impulses, regulating blood pressure, and maintaining muscle activity. Potassium is another mineral essential for good nutrition and health. It is necessary for the normal electrical activity of the heart and works with sodium to maintain the body’s water balance. The human body needs only about ¼ teaspoon of salt per day; the average adult consumes 4,000 to 6,000 mg of sodium per day. For adults age 50 and over, the Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2010 recommends a sodium intake of no more than 1500 mg per day and the recommendation for potassium intake is 4.7 grams (4,700 mg) per day. Too much sodium may contribute to high blood pressure. High blood pressure is a major risk factor for heart disease, stroke, and kidney disease. Sodium or salt sensitive people may see an increase in their blood pressure and/or retain fluid when they eat too much salt. New evidence suggests that dietary potassium may help lower blood pressure. Increasing potassium in the diet may protect against hypertension in people who are sensitive to high levels of sodium. Foods high in sodium are salted snack foods, canned foods, cheeses, and boxed convenience foods. Try herbs and spices, instead of salt, to enhance food’s natural flavors such as: allspice, garlic, lemon, or lime juice. Foods high in potassium are carrots and potatoes, blackberries, and spinach. Choosing and preparing foods with less salt/sodium and eating a diet high in fresh fruits and vegetables and low-fat dairy are keys to maintaining the right sodium/potassium balance and a more healthful diet.
