PREMIER week 2 review
Otorohanga, Hamilton Old Boys, Hamilton Marist and University all made it two wins from two to start the year,
while Te Awamutu Sports were the other team to record a win.
Hamilton Marist 19 – Fraser Tech 15
Otorohanga 39 – Melville 21
Hamilton Marist was made to work hard for their win for the
second week in a row, overcoming a halftime deficit to pip
Fraser Tech at Mill Street.
This match was more even than the scoreline suggests but
Otorohanga’s devastating strike power on attack ensured they
were always in front at Collins Road after opening up a 22-7
lead at halftime.
Tech started strongly and went into the break up 10-9 thanks to
a try to flanker Brodie McCurran and a conversion and penalty
from first five Sam Christie.
They extended their lead early in the second half with a try to
fullback Zoram Watene but Marist were able to successfully reel
them in with a try to ball running prop Loni Uhila and 14 points
from the boot of first five Wharenui Hawera.
Elusive winger Sekove Seriki scored a double for Otorohanga,
with prop Ted Tauroa, lock Josh Ferguson, second five Joe
Perawiti, centre Dylan Collier and loose forward Turuva
Lumelume also dotting down.
Melville gave their home crowd something to cheer about with
three well worked tries to prop Johnny Tu’ungafasi, Number 8
Jacob Ale and wing Luke Masirewa, but could not contain the
powerful Otorohanga offence.
Hamilton Old Boys 54 – Morrinsville Sports 14
Hamilton Old Boys continued their impressive start to the
season with a comfortable eight tries to two win over Morrinsville
Sports at Fred Jones Park.
In a wide open match Old Boys always looked in control after
jumping out to a 30-14 lead at halftime. Second five Jordan
Cameron scored two tries for the home side with wing Josh Tafili
scoring his third try in two games and again looking dangerous.
Morrinsville played positive throughout and competed for much
of the match, with prop Tama Neha and wing Hamish Clare
scoring tries, but they leaked points in the final quarter to let the
score blow out.
Te Awamutu Sports 53 – Te Rapa 5
After a disappointing opening round Te Awamutu Sports got
their season underway with a bonus point win over Te Rapa at
St Andrews Park.
Te Awamutu fullback Hayden Ivil was the standout, scoring a
hat-trick as the visitors ran in nine tries in total, kicking on from a
24-0 halftime lead to rack up a half century of points.
Te Rapa showed signs of improvement but still have much work
to do to be competitive. They managed their first points of the
season with a second half try to flanker Apitangi Taotala.
University 30 – Hautapu 19
University and Hautapu played out a tough and even match at
Beetham Park with the students pulling away for the win.
Two tries from midfielder Chauncy Edwardson, and one each to
prop Joe Walsh and loose forward Louis Rogers, made it the
second straight bonus point win for University.
Hautapu put in an improved performance from the opening
week, scoring three tries to first five Kelvin Smith, halfback Ruan
du Plooy and wing Thomas Orr, and will be disappointed to
come away from the game with no points to show for their
efforts.
