Issue 48 - 17th November 2014
Together, Achieving, Loving, Learning Weekly news from The Marist Catholic Primary School For week beginning 17th November 2014 Issue 48 My quandary was settled at 6.30 last night as I purchased my Superman Onesie to wear today… joy! It was great to have Tallulah Wright and her Mum speak to us all on Monday in worship about the difficulties and challenges of living with Type One Diabetes and how wonderful to see everybody today entering the spirit and wearing their Onesie or super hero outfit and raising much needed funds for these charities. It has been an exciting week – not just with my costume dilemma – but also a wonderful celebration of our children’s confidence and enthusiasm in our Concert on Wednesday evening where 54 children performed – it was great! Good to see a number of parents at our information meeting on Tuesday too about early writing skills. Another exciting and busy week at The Marist and next week we move into Anti-Bullying week, a nationwide focus on stamping out bullying in every school. We will report more on that next week; in the meantime have a super weekend! anti-Bullying Week This week is Anti-bullying week and the whole school will be focussing on how we can recognise bullying, how we deal with it and how we stop it… STOP PRESS - Shoeboxes deadline extended till 9am today! Christmas Fayre at the Parish Centre, 12.00 – 3.00pm In the week before half term we put our normal timetable aside to concentrate on learning more about World War I and as part of our learning every child in the school made a poppy – cutting and sewing material to make a unique poppy in remembrance of those that lost their lives. Mrs Brewer (Amiya’s grandmother) spent her half term sewing all of our poppies together to create The Marist Remembers, our own memorial to all those that have lost their lives in the service of our country and its freedoms. On Tuesday, Armistice Day, the wonderful memorial was presented to the children and we stood as a whole school community at 11.00 in absolute silence as we remembered. P a g e |3 For children in Year 3 and above… If you would like your child to celebrate their First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion in the Parish next year then please ensure that you complete a joining form which will be available at this weekend’s Masses at Our Lady’s. The forms will be in the porch at Mass times. The First Reconciliations will be held in Lent next year and the First Holy Communions will be celebrated in Masses close to Corpus Christi. Marist PTA news The next PTA meeting is TUESDAY DECEMBER 2nd PLEASE COME ALONG! Follow the link below to an e-safety newsletter for parents which we will link to each month and which contains really helpful advice and tips for dealing with safety at home. Your children will all have esafety lessons in their computing lessons but increasingly the issues that arise centre around their access to and use of messaging sites from home http://www.esafety-adviser.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/Parents-Online-Safety-NewsletterEdition-7.pdf What a fantastic evening we shared on Wednesday with over 50 confident and enthusiastic budding musicians and singers. I was so proud of every one and I know that you must have been too if you were there. Huge thanks to all our stars for their efforts, they set a great example as Marist Learners, and we saw just the start of what I know is going to be a very successful journey in music at The Marist! Thanks to Mrs Mather for all her hard work encouraging, rehearsing and organising! Thank you too to everyone who donated to our retiring collection for We will be sending over £130 to help their invaluable work with children around the world. P a g e |4 A MARIST LEARNER IS... Always ready to learn Enthusiastic, willing to take part and speak up A risk taker - always confident to have a go Happy to try and try again Not afraid to learn from mistakes Thinking about what it is to be a good learner: A MARIST LEARNER is… Able to learn well with others it’s about being the best that you can be! Working together as part of a team or collaborating is a key learning skill. It can take a lot of patience and empathy as well as a willingness to speak up and take part. There are so many different life skills involved and all of the Marist Learner traits are important to the dynamics of group work. Some children (and adults!) can prefer to work alone, can feel that they get more done when left to it and that in itself is a learning habit that is vital (able to learn well on their own). However, in all areas of life we do have to work at times in groups and with others and often with peers that we would not naturally choose to be with. It is important that the children develop the ability to learn effectively in those situations: to respect the opinions and ideas of others; to be confident to share their own ideas; to be able to deal with disagreement; and to be able to focus on the job in hand – the learning – and not be side-tracked by distracting conversations or other diversions! Able to learn well on their own Collaboration when it works well can lead to accelerated learning, each member of the group working off each other, feeding on the shared ideas and strategies and getting to the learning objective more quickly together. However, it is a discipline which we need to teach our children – making the most of the opportunities for learning together when they present themselves. Reflective - able to think and talk about our learning Please help us by reinforcing the message at home – talking to the children about working together and how to deal with distractions and disputes but also the importance of sharing ideas and questions with each other. Able to learn well with others Able to learn well with others We take part in group activities We can share independently We are beginning to resolve questions and disputes independently We always help our friends We set a good example for others to follow We are able to work with our talk partners to help our learning We are happy to work with everyone We are always tolerant of others We encourage each other We can take turns We listen to each other We are always positive towards each other We take turns We respect each other’s opinions We can cooperate and compromise with each other when learning together We are able to keep focussed on the given task We will always take part and share the responsibility within a group We are able to stay on task We respect and value each other’s ideas We recognise the value of cooperation with others We recognise the importance of compromise as well as determination We are able to delegate roles and adapt roles as required by the challenge P a g e |5 I am so very proud of how much our children want to help others. Pupil Voice has been leading the way with ideas for raising money for charities and causes that matter to them as the children at our school. Already this year the children have raised over £1,000 for various causes including today’s great effort for Children in Need and Diabetes Type Onesie Day. In addition we donated carloads of foodstuffs for distribution locally at our Harvest celebrations and the Hall has a wall of Christmas shoeboxes for the Samaritan’s Purse charity – well over 130 boxes full of small gifts that will make all the difference in the lives of so many children this Christmas – thank you all… The shoebox deadline has been extended until Monday 17th November and so if you haven’t already sent a box in, then please, make a child very, very, happy, this Christmas!
