ROUND: 5
DATE: 28th May 2016
OVAL: Pearce
MATCH: Marist Blues v Tuggeranong Bulldogs
GOAL KICKERS: Harry Friend (2), Angus Miller (2), Aiden Wilson, Tim Hanley
MATCH REPORT:
It was a cold start to the morning at Pearce with the temperature gauge reading 3
degrees. Although this didn’t seem to deter the boys as they showed some great
skills in the first third with a couple of strong goals by Harry.
The second term saw some great midfield battles between the two teams. There was
a standout mark of the year by Jimmy, well done!!
The last third was strongly contested as Tuggeranong made a comeback and added
to their points. There were plenty of opportunities for the ball with Tim and Sam L
really getting in and playing hard at the ball.
Excellent skills on show & a great match between the two teams.
NEXT ROUND: Marist v Queanbeyan Tigers (Halloran Oval)
UNDER 11’s
ROUND: 5
DATE: 28 May 2016
OVAL: Pearce Oval
MATCH: Marist 5.13-43 defeated Tuggeranong Bulldogs 4.7-31
GOAL KICKERS: Zac Jenkins, Xander Tuan, Ben Wade, Angus Miller, Jacob
Scholtens
MATCH REPORT:
The boys put in a good effort in the first quarter but following a lot of scrappy and
loose play the Bulldogs took advantage scoring two goals to Marist nil.
Bulldogs 2.3-15 to Marist 0.2-2
Following an encouraging quarter time speech by the coach the boys came out in
the second quarter firing, scoring a quick goal off the bounce. But as quickly as
Marist scored, the Bulldogs put one through the posts to maintain their two goal lead.
Fortunately that was about all the Bulldogs could muster this quarter with the ball
going backwards and forwards with little result for both teams considering the effort
being put in. That was until Marist managed another hard worked for goal to finish.
Bulldogs 3.3-21 to Marist 2.5-17
With the half time break taken you could sense the boys knew they were in the hunt
leading into the third quarter. A magical three-mark run was only stopped by the goal
post being pushed out of place as the ball glanced the side of it. The Bulldogs took
advantage and quickly pushed the ball to the other end scoring a goal. The
determination in the second half to see the Bulldogs surrender the ball led to some
really great tackles and a couple of negligible high ones. Once again there was
another tussle for the ball in front of the posts with Marist dominating and kicking
another goal. But the Bulldogs turned it around from the bounce, with Marist giving
away a penalty that put them in an ideal spot to kick at goal, but fortunately could not
convert.
Marist 4.7-31 to Bulldogs 4.6-30
The boys entered the fourth quarter buzzing, their talk was sharp and positive. They
only gave the Bulldogs one opportunity to score but the Marist defence was too
strong with the full back tacking a great mark shutting down the play. Marist drove it
home this quarter with another goal but plenty of missed opportunities resulted in six
behinds. The boys really showed that they have a great ability to be in the right place
and handball out of trouble and get themselves into a better attacking position. The
boys showed today that they are a good strong team that will not give up and play
great footy to the end. Well done Marist

ROUND: 5
DATE: 28 May 2016
OVAL: Pearce
MATCH: Marist vs Tuggeranong Lions
GOAL KICKERS: James Andric, Cameron Cox, Will Green, Felix Henderson-Burch,
Nick Quinlan
MATCH REPORT:
The first snow of the 2016 season was falling up in the mountains as the u12’s took
to the field this week. But only the spectators seemed to feel the chill as the boys
were too busy on the field to notice anything but the game underway.
The first quarter began with a good attack from Tristan Morley in the midfield with a
first goal from the ever constant Felix Henderson-Burch. A solid defence from
Harvey Jack, Matthew Choules and others kept the Lions to a single goal. The boys
responded to Coach Green’s call for intensity and were first to the ball throughout.
The second quarter the boys were asked to make more room in the forward line and
give the mids room to kick into. Tom O’Mullane, Harvey Jack and Huon Apps
(among others) took some great marks in the mid field which Cameron Cox and
James Andric were able to convert. Liam Chynoweth put in a notable defence and
was seen to lean towards the ball and win a few crucial tackles.
Third quarter began with Tom O’Mullane off injured after putting his foot under an
opposition player’s studs. The Lions scored a couple of goals early in the quarter but
the boys maintained focus and wrestled control back across the field. Will Green and
Mikko Rhee took strong marks and James Andric was seen to do a nice smother.
Ben Rankin, Adam Mann and Sebastian Senti in the mid field contested the ball
strongly. Goals from James Andric and Felix Henderson-Burch. At final interchange,
Coach Green advised the boys to maintain discipline in the face of a few minor
niggles
Quarter four saw a strong finish with Ben Van der Plaat and co. maintaining intensity
in defence. Points scored by Chynoweth and Woods, in addition to goals scored by
Felix Henderson Burch (2) and James Andric, plus a cracker from Nick Quinlan
scoring a relaxed and comfortable tap over goal on the run.
Well done to those boys who showed good sportsmanship in playing a quarter for
the Lions who were short of subs.
Marist won 10.8-68 to the Lions 6.5-41 having maintained their concentration and
arrested the momentum of the other team when they needed to.

COACHES AWARD: Matt Toohey and Tony Geremia
MILESTONES: Tony Geremia – 50 Games
MATCH REPORT:
A cold and wet morning greeted us at beautiful Lindwall with another player
celebrating his 50th game, this time it was Tony Geremia’s turn to run through a
banner, with little brother Ari in tow for the special event.
With four players out, every single U13 Sky player (plus the super skilled Felix
Henderson-Burch, who we borrowed from the U12’s – thanks again Felix), put in a
huge effort for a great win. The boys were working together as a team and following
instructions of the coaches to reap the benefits of all that hard work at training.
Matt Toohey had a cracking 2nd game of AFL ever, with 3 goals off his booming boot!
Spectators were witness to a heart-warming display of sportsmanship as Matt gave
up his chance to score many more goals by passing to his fellow team mates for
their own chance to kick for goal. How cool is that?
To top off the great win against the goods sports Tuggeranong Hawks, the boys
consumed blue cupcakes (in record time) to celebrate Tony Geremia’s 50th game,
thanks to the lovely Manager Maria. U13Sky 2016 Manager-Maria-Baked-BlueCupcake-Countdown at: 3 batches, 6 more to go for a total of 9 x 50 game

DATE: 28 May 2016
OVAL: Goodhew Park Goulburn
MATCH: Marist Royal 3.5-23 defeated by Gungahlin Jets 4.11-35
GOAL KICKERS: Kane Gollasch (3)
MATCH REPORT:
MATCH REPORT:
The over enthusiastic manager conducting a reconnaissance mission on the ground
24 hours before kick-off clearly angered the weather gods of the Lilac City. But to
quote a renowned weatherman, Brick Tamland “I didn’t ask for these powers, I was
given them” (this means – don’t blame the weather on me).
For those lamenting the fact that the schedule brought us to Goulburn, it was actually
fitting in the 2016 AFL Indigenous round, as The Aboriginal name for Goulburn is
Burbong, a Murring/Wiradjuri word indicating a special Indigenous cultural area.
The pre-game lead up was not without issues with gear left behind, boys arriving late
and one player (jersey #1010 in binary) literally exiting a moving vehicle to join the
final warm up lap. At about the same time the final player arrived, the young local
umpire had just enough time to finish his second pre-game hot dog. He was certainly
confident that the more senior umpire was going to allow him to keep firmly
entrenched within 10m of the centre square.
Gungahlin had all the elemental advantages in the first quarter - the wind was
blowing their way, the earth was slanted in the direction of their goals and any balls
on the ground were always going to head towards the river. I’m sure our golfers in
the team (such as binary jersey #11 would have noticed).
The ball was elevated high by the umpire and the game was off. Early defensive
pressure on the Jets ball carriers forced the ball into our forward line. This resulted in
a rushed behind and an early 1-0 lead. If this was soccer, we’d be going bananas
with such an early score. But we play a better game and there is long way to go.
Gungahlin used their wind advantage and found their key big men with space
resulting in some generous metres being gained through the air and into their
forward line. Some nice handballs and a classy snap saw the first goal hit the
scoresheet. The Jets then managed to get a clearance from the re start and
managed to stop Marist getting the ball away from the danger area. This pressure
produced another goal for the Jets. They could have had another quick score if not
for the fantastic positional play by our fullback (binary jersey #100). This sort of play
would be a standout throughout the game.
The Jets were quickly on the attack and they channelled a classic Sydney Swans
play of a smaller player handing off to the bigger, marquee player who took aim off
two steps, for a behind (much like L. Franklin did a few times the previous night).
The Jets kicked two more minor scores shortly afterwards, followed by a late behind
by Marist to finish the quarter. The score at this point was Jets 2.3-15 to Marist 0.2-2
The quarter time message from the coach was to show more aggression at the ball.
Marist started the 2nd quarter in much the same as the first, with some good pressure
leading to a rushed behind. The highlight of the early parts of this quarter was a flat
out sprint by (Binary jersey #10100) to contest a 50/50 chance then collect the ball
and kick long into the forward line. A goal would have been a good reward.
Continued pressure saw a shot just miss by (binary jersey #111). This smart little
player then collected in the ball wide in the forward pocket and snapped a fantastic
goal for our first major of the day. This brought us to within 6 points of the Jets in
what is developing into a nice little rivalry. The Jets then moved the ball forward for
their only score of the term, a rushed behind. The early judgement of the conditions
by this scribe was proving accurate and the key would be to keep close during the
third quarter when the Jets again ran with the wind.
The playing style being crafted by the coaches came to the fore with the next forward
movement being dominated by some fantastic hand to hand play and another behind
resulted after a kick at goal was blocked. Smothering the ball is now becoming more
challenging, as the risk of fingers snapping off is becoming very real as the
temperature drops. On a side note, those believing it to be cold should be pleased to
note that the lowest recorded temperature for Goulburn in May is actually -8
degrees. So, let’s all toughen up!
The half time hooter sounded with the scores at Jets 2.4-15 and Marist 1.5-11. The
half time message was deep and highly motivational. So much so, that it has been
kept out of this report. Basically, it revolved around “eat an orange, drink some water
and take your bags out of the change room, as the next team will have no room”.
The Jets got an early start again with the wind behind them and kicked a quick goal
to get the jump on the scoreboard. The Marist players seemed to forget about
marking up and the Jets were starting to rack up too many uncontested marks.
These were occurring both in defence and attack. The runner was getting a bit of a
workout and it is now obvious that his “excess baggage” after a pre-season in
Europe was gone and he was ready to declare himself available for the 2017 free
agent draft. Let’s all encourage his dreams.
The Jets could have put Marist away this quarter with so much ball in their forward
line. Kicking only one goal with four behinds this quarter could have been costly. The
defence of (Binary Jersey #100) was aided by one this year’s revelations (Binary
Jersey #10) who goes hard at the ball every time and each week is starting to make
some really smart decisions.
The quarter ended with a minor controversy as a shot on goal was successful by
(Binary Jersey #100). The scoreboard attendant had it on the board in a flash,
however the umpire declared that the kick was after the siren. My audio recording
proved useless on this occasion and a protest will not be lodged. The score at the
end of the 3rd quarter was Jets 3.8-25 to Marist 1.5-11. A scoreless quarter was not
helpful to the cause for Marist.
Marist started with some better play all round and this resulted in a second goal for
the day from (Binary Jersey #111). The coaches and parents by this stage could
certainly see the momentum shifting. This momentum shift ramped up a gear with
the above mentioned player kicking his third goal for the day. Marist were within 2
points at this stage and confidence was rightfully building. The pressure from both
sides increased, as did the wind into the microphone area of the phone. I think the
Jets scored a point during this time. Marist got into the forward pocket and couldn’t
convert the pressure into points. The Jets hit the anchors and started to play a bit of
kick to kick to wind down the clock. They also managed to kick a goal and get to a 12
point lead which was the final margin.
At the final siren the score was Jets 4.11-35 Marist 3.5-23
Goulburn was great. Let’s do it again some time.

ROUND: 5
DATE: 28 May 2016
OVAL: Football Park Woden
MATCH: Marist Sky 7.2-44 defeated by Magpies 10.11-71
GOAL KICKERS: Henry Gallop (4), Patch Benson, Tom Chipman and Connor
McDonald
BEST PLAYERS: Patch Benson, Noah Carmen, Henry Gallop, Joe Gleeson, and
Cormac Hayes
OUTS: Josh Green and Will Parlett, both injured.
MATCH REPORT:
An overcast and cool morning, about 6C and rain was threatening. Not a huge
crowd, but bacon and eggs were on the BBQ and the ground was looking pretty
good. A special thanks to the Woden Blues Football Club for hosting our game
today.
Qtr 1
The first five minutes of the game was mostly spent in the Magpies half. Even so, it
was pretty much goal for goal for much of the quarter. Both Connor and Chippo
scored majors for Marist.
Marist 2.1-13 to the Magpies 3.4-22
Quarter Time Comments: It was a physical game and the boys needed to be
prepared to put their bodies on the line in the contest for the ball. Once again Coach
Highmore was super impressed with the efforts on the field, and he promised he’d
never be disappointed as long as the boys were attacking the ball.
TIP: The Magpies have a strategy – as soon as they get possession they ‘run and
spread’. Next time we play them on 2 July (Election Day) we’ve got to make sure we
pick up our players INSTANTLY and close them down.
Qtr 2
This was a very evenly matched quarter. The contests were real, and the teamwork
was paying off. Henry Gallop added another two goals to his season tally this
quarter. The resident MAFC brains trust (Rick Creech) reckoned this was the best
he’d seen Marist Sky Under 14s play all year. Marist 4.1-25 to the Magpies 6.7-43
Half Time Comments: A few changes to the line-up, but not many. Another great
quarter, with some great attacking of the ball. Remember to maintain your second
and third efforts. For the next quarter, the boys were asked not to do too much with
the ball in the backline – if you take possession and don’t have an obvious option,
just kick it long into space and let the mid-fielders sort it out. The Magpies were still
practicing the ‘run and spread’ tactic, and we were still a bit flat-footed. Marist need
to flick the switch in their brain and get to their man.
Qtr 3
Another very good quarter with goals to Patch and Henry - we were sure 'kicking
straight'. Marist was working hard and the boys’ work on their fitness was starting to
show results. Boys – don’t complain when the Coach makes you run and sprint at
training. It pays off on the day. The Magpies put two of their best players into their
defensive 50 and that was a compliment to Marist. Well done on keeping the
Magpies to just one goal this quarter. Marist 6.1-37 to the magpies 7.8-50
Three Quarter Time Comments: The third quarter showed the boys there was reward
for their efforts. But they had to now work on controlling the ball to deliver it to the
forwards. Control – this has been a subject talked about at training, and Coach
Highmore will continue the discussion.
Qtr 4
The Magpies are a team not used to struggling, but they had a hard time on
Saturday. For a while in this quarter it felt like all we needed was another 10 minutes
and we could have won the game. It felt good to watch another Marist goal sail
through in the last 90 seconds of the game as Henry kicked his fourth for the match.
Callan Bourke and Sam Patton had a great quarter and were rewarded with a free
sausage from one of the Woden Blues seniors who saw a couple of good plays.
Marist 7.2-44 to the Magpies 10.11-71
Continued on next page…
Final Siren Comments: Once again Paul called the
boys out for their collective effort – he was really
proud. The effort today was the closest to what’s
possible – remember the graph that the Coach
showed you.
6 Points
1. The Magpies ‘run and spread’ when they get possession
2. Fitness helps on the day
3. Backs - think about how you use the mid-fielders
4. Control the ball to control the game
5. With effort comes reward
6. But the score doesn’t matter; your effort does.
Thanks to all of our helpers and volunteers, and to David Swan of Rodger
Bartholomew for being our team sponsor.

OVAL: Kingston
MATCH: Marist v Eastlake
MATCH REPORT:
Marist U17 played Eastlake at Kingston on a chilly may afternoon.
The focus for the game was to continue with the short quick ball movement and try
and set small individual and team goals to measure performance through the game.
Eastlake started really well and kicked a couple of goals before we knew what was
happening. They were a slightly bigger bodied side and were out to make a strong
impression by exerting pressure around the packs and dominating in the air early.
Marist were unsettled and took a while to adapt to the strong quick play from
Eastlake and as a result we found ourselves down by 6 goals at the end of the first
quarter.
After re-grouping at qtr time and committing to manning up and have more voice, the
second qtr was much more consistent and the boys showed they were up for the
challenge. Max Scott stepped up and was a dominant performer defending well and
following up driving the ball into attack. Luke Gaynor and Cooper Browne were solid
across the ground trying hard to stop the flow of goals while Ben Ainsworth tried hard
in the middle. Sam Brearly was tough and reliable in and under packs and trying
hard to get us moving out of the middle.
Marist continued to try hard through the third and fourth qtrs however Eastlake were
too strong and skilful on the day. Other solid contributors for Marist were Matt Apps
who shows a lot of promise and was always looking to make good use of the ball
and Ted Maher and Isaac Egan showed glimpses of flair and talent. Jordan Wood
tried hard in the ruck and took a number of solid grabs before getting injured and
Alex Carke and Bailey Ranatunga. Some solid work through the game and we
continue to improve with our out the backs, talking and skills.
Taking a few positives and improvements from each game will help us in the game
ahead. Well done boys lets continue to work together!
