This week Year 11 retreats are taking place and Year 9 are on their first week long Footsteps activity at Bungarra. My thanks to the many staff who have organized these events and/or accompanied the boys on them. Last week’s Commencement Mass celebrated by Archbishop Christopher Prowse was a beautiful liturgy attended by what we believe was the largest gathering we have had in Marcellin Hall since its opening in 2012. Our Archbishop reflected with us about the theme of MERCY, noting that the word’s origins are taken from the Latin ‘Misericordiae’ meaning connecting one’s heart with another’s misery. That translation made an impact on me as did the reminder that “mercy is one side of a two sided coin; the other side being justice.” The challenge we were left with was to be a community of people who not only talked about mercy but lived it out in the spirit of the term ‘Misericordiae’, one’s heart with another’s misery. Many thanks to all of you who attended the Commencement Mass and joined us after for the Senior School House picnics. It was a beautiful evening to celebrate firstly around the Lord’s table then in a social setting. The Ceremony was held in Marcellin Hall and Mr Lee presented awards to students from Years 8-12 for their academic achievements in Semester Two 2015. Three different types of awards were made; Certificates for Academic Improvement, Academic Merit and Academic Excellence. Awards are calculated based on a student’s Grade Point Average (GPA). In this system grades are given numerical values where an A grade is given a value of 5, a B grade a value of 4 and so on. The total points gained by a student in the semester is then divided by the number of subjects they studied and the results of this calculation is called the GPA. The Top Ten ATAR students from 2015 were also presented with a medallion to mark their outstanding achievements in Year 12 2015. Weight because you don’t want something too heavy for him to carry around. Screen size is also important as something too small will inhibit his use, and something too big will generally also weigh quite a bit and be awkward to carry around. We generally recommend something between 10” to 14” in terms of screen size. In addition to the considerations above, the following minimum specifications need to be taken into account. Wireless compatibility: The Marist wireless network operates on the 802.11n 5Ghz standard – look for 802.11 abgn. This may be advertised as “Dual Band Wireless”, “802.11abgn”, “802.11agn”, “802.11ac” or “Gigabit Wireless”. Devices with only “802.11abg” or “802.11n” will NOT connect at school. Battery life: Devices need to last for a school day – battery life should be at least 6 hours. Operating System: Devices should have a reasonably current operating system for your device. (Eg; Windows 7 or better, MacOS 10.x, IOS 9.x.) For those who have already purchased a device with incompatible Wireless capabilities. Please ring the College helpdesk on 6298 7211 as we may be able to advise you regarding options for replacement. Michael Plenty ICT Systems Manager STUDENTS WHO ARE GOING TO BE ABSENT FROM SCHOOL If your son is going to be absent from school because of sporting commitments or family reasons you will need to: 1. Write to the Headmaster before the absence seeking permission for the student to be away from school. 2. Ensure your son liaises with his teachers to catch up on the work he misses while away. 3. Note that Exams will not be rescheduled for reasons other than illness or hospitalisation. Students who are absent because of illness will need to follow the normal absentee procedures. NATIONAL YOUTH SCIENCE FORUM From 18 to 30 January this year I attended the National Youth Science Forum (NYSF). This event brings together 200 young students about to enter year 12 for the two weeks at ANU to learn about science, careers and expand their horizons. I was a member of a physics group, and was teamed up with 13 other like-minded physicists to visit local labs where new areas of physics are being researched and discovered. A range of leading scientists held talks and discussions and through them we learnt our fields of science can become a career. At workshops we learnt valuable life skills related to a career as a scientist and to assist us in our final year of school. The motto of the NYSF is “We’ll show you things you’ve never considered”, and they truly live up to this motto. I strongly encourage all science-minded year 11 students to consider applying for the NYSF when entries open in March/April this year. PARISH YOUTH MINISTRY CROSSROADS Our CROSSROADS Lenten program coordinated by Year 10 Christian Leadership students meet at lunch each Wednesday throughout Lent. The boys have participated in some Lenten trivia, a spiritual fitness assessment, considered temptations, fasting and spent some time in prayer. Perhaps the biggest success was that for the first time, Year 6 students were invited to participate with Year 7 & 8 students and it worked wonderfully. The aligned bell times between JS and SS have opened up some really great possibilities for Faith Formation activities. Submissions: [email protected] Students from Queanbeyan Parish were invited to meet Jordan Hodge a Youth Ministry worker from St Greg’s Youth. He opened up the idea of our boys joining the youth in the parish for an encounter with God that involved action, community and discipleship. Meanwhile, MYM team members attended their first Parish Mass together at Corpus Christi Parish in Gowrie. The team hopes to attend Mass together once a month and will initially alternate between Corpus Christi and Mary Help of Christians Parish in Pearce. Enquiries: (02) 6298 7200 Web: www.maristc.act.edu.au MARIST COLLEGE ENEWS | 24 FEBRUARY 2016 IMPORTANT REMINDER ABOUT TRAFFIC ARRANGEMENTS SENIOR SCHOOL Parents are reminded not to enter the College driveway between 8.00am and 8.45am, and 3.00pm and 4.00pm as this causes difficulty for buses and pedestrians. We strongly recommend you use Biddlecombe Street for drop-off and pick-up. A drop-off/pickup bay is available in front of the school on Marr Street. If you use this bay, please drive forward as space becomes available in order to allow vehicles to enter so as not to cause congestion on Marr Street or to affect bus access to the driveway at Gate 1. Please note the ‘No Stopping’ signage that is posted on Marr Street. A reminder that the pedestrian crossing on Marr Street is not to be used as a drop-off or pick up point. Parents are also asked to respect the privacy and accessibility of the College’s neighbours in Marr Street by not parking across their driveways, on their lawns or entering their properties. Boys should not walk through the unit complexes to meet their families but should use the adjacent parkland. We seek to maintain a cordial relationship with our neighbours and ask for your support in maintaining the flow of traffic and the safety of all members of the College community. There have been cases of double-parking on Marr Street which effects the flow of traffic, potentially endangers students and other road users, and delays the timely arrival of buses. A reminder there is no vehicular entry to Gate 2 from Marr Street during the morning and afternoon bus times (8.00am-8.45am and 3.00pm-4.00pm). ACT Police and ACTION supervisors monitor this area and can issue fines. Please also remember not to exit via Gate 1 at any time during the day. JUNIOR SCHOOL After School Pick Up (Drive-Through): Drive through (Gate #3) is a very busy area. The safety of our boys is paramount. We ask that parents and friends are patient and observant as they collect boys in the afternoon and follow the requests of Junior School staff. • A number of parents and grandparents park on surrounding streets (e.g. Biddlecome Street and have boys walk to meet them). This is a good idea. Boys are to use the underpass near Melrose High School. • Do not park on Marr Street and call boys to your car. • If at all possible, wait a few minutes after 3.10pm as Marr Street becomes very congested. • Please drive as far down into the pick-up area as possible to the red line. • If your son is not visible and immediately ready to be collected - circle the roundabout – or park and wait – or drive down into the car park and come up again. Be aware of cars exiting the parking spots. • Please allow cars that are circling the roundabout to have access as you come down the drive (give way to your right). • Do not attempt to turn right onto Marr Street as you exit – please observe the ‘Left Turn Only’ signage. NORTH SIDE BUS SERVICE The North Side Bus Service is now closed to new students as it is fully subscribed. Should you wish to go on the waiting list for a seat, please contact the Finance Office on [email protected]. Please note that access to the North Side bus service is available only to those families who have registered, completed a consent form and paid the associated bus levy.
