WAIKATO RUGBY UNION CLUB RUGBY NEWS Saturday 5 April 2014 Photo courtesy of Heddfan Photography PREMIER WEEK 3 REVIEW RESULTS, DRAWS & STANDINGS THIS WEEKEND’S TEAM LISTS PREMIER FORM XV PREMIER week 3 review Otorohanga, Hamilton Old Boys and University all maintained their perfect starts to the season, while there was also Round 3 wins for Melville and Morrinsville Sports. Otorohanga 31 – Fraser Tech 21 Otorohanga made it three bonus point wins in a row with a four tries to three win over Fraser Tech at Island Reserve. Flanker Zak Hohneck scored twice for the home side with midfielders Dylan Collier and Joe Perawiti also dotting down. Tech, down by just three points at the break, stayed close for most of the match with tries to prop Latu Talakai, halfback Troy Lobendahn and fullback Zoram Watene, but Otorohanga managed to pull away. Hamilton Old Boys 32 – Hamilton Marist 13 Hamilton Old Boys came away from their trip to Marist Park with a convincing bonus point win and as a result claimed the Stag Trophy from rivals Hamilton Marist. Second five Jordan Cameron continued his fine try scoring form with two five-pointers, while there was also tries for backs Anthony Coffey and Jackson Gillett with wing Josh Tafili again involved in most of the attacking action. Marist, who found themselves down by 18-3 at the break with a penalty from first five Wharenui Hawera their only scoring, fought back late with tries to centre Eddie Uele and flanker Zane Kapeli but the result was never in doubt. University 71 – Te Rapa 0 University ran rampant against Te Rapa at St Andrews Park, scoring 11 tries for their third straight bonus point win. Number 8 Josh Dowsing led the way with a hat-trick of tries and first five Jason Robertson added eight conversions. Other try scorers for University were David Morgan, Damian McKenzie, Whetu Douglas, Sean Nixon, Te Raina RichardsCoxhead, Navi Sikivou, Matt Smith and Brogan O’Connor. Melville 35 – Te Awamutu Sports 28 Te Awamutu came from 16 points down at halftime to take a brief lead over Melville at Albert Park but the visitors managed to go ahead again late in the match to claim an exciting win. Melville took a sizeable lead early on with four first half tries to centre Luke Masirewa (2), prop Johnny Tu’ungafasi and wing Shaun O’Connor. Te Awamutu responded with tries to wing Nanai Naturaga, fullback Hayden Ivil, centre Tane Mita and halfback Jarred Bayliss but a late Melville try to second five Brett O’Connor, and two penalties from fullback Mike Martin, ensured the win for the visitors and Te Awamutu were forced to settle for two bonus points. Morrinsville Sports 20 – Hautapu 17 Morrinsville Sports jumped out to a 20-0 lead and then held off a late comeback from Hautapu to get their first win of the season at Campbell Park. Fullback Semisi Masirewa, first five Josh O’Flaherty and wing Rex Sikivou scored Morrinsville’s tries and the home side looked to be in control midway through the second half. However a late surge from Hautapu, with two tries to wing Thomas Orr and one from first five Jason Thomasen, gave Morrinsville a scare but they were able to hang on for the four points. Fraser Tech halfback Troy Lobendahn tries to split the Otorohanga defence during their Round 3 match last weekend. Heddfan Photography.
