NEWSLETTER - October 2012
Launch of The Bathurst Film Factory
TO STIMULATE IMAGINATION AND CREATION
The 1975 Australian cult classic film The Man from Hong Kong,
which was partly filmed at nearby Sunny Corner, will be screened
at Bathurst’s Metro Cinemas on 4th November 2012 to launch the
exciting new arts initiative – THE BATHURST FILM FACTORY. This
fundraising screening will be a great opportunity for movie-lovers
and filmmakers from the region to get together and enjoy a great
Sunday ‘arvo’ movie in like-minded company.
THE BATHURST FILM FACTORY, organised by Christine Sweeney,
is a film-focussed collective under the umbrella of the Bathurst
Arts Council. It aims to bring members of the local filmmaking
community together to develop, discuss and debate all things to do
with film. The BFF core aim is to support filmmaking and filmmakers
in the region.
Australian film producer and Yetholme resident David Hannay will
introduce his film The Man from Hong Kong.
“American filmmaker Quentin Tarantino regards The
Man From Hong Kong as one of his favourites and Brian
Trenchard-Smith as his favourite Australian director,”
David Hannay said.
David Hannay hopes that local politicians, businesses, educators
and film makers will participate in the project with energy, drive,
and commitment.
THE BATHURST FILM FACTORY fundraising screening will introduce
the who, what, where and why of the BFF to the community. You
will hear about the BFF plans for an annual film screening event,
local filmmaker awards and film making opportunities.
Also screening with be the locally made 16mm short film ‘Boys will
be’, made by Rusty Shutter Films. Rusty Shutter Film is a recently
established collaborative group of energetic filmmakers located in
the Bathurst region.

A Bathurst Arts Council event
2BS Youth Arts Awards winners July-September
The 2BS Youth Arts Awards is a community award that recognises outstanding young people in our region. Proudly
supported by the Bathurst Arts Council Inc, these monthly awards acknowledge the work of young people in the
Bathurst region who have distinguished themselves in their particular field of the arts.
Since starting again in July, three talented young people in Bathurst have been honoured with an award with
many more quality nominations coming in. Winners have been interviewed on 2BS and you will have seen profiles
of them in the Western Advocate. Monthly winners also receive $100 from Bathurst Arts Council. Each monthly
winner will be in the running for annual $500 award from 2BS, presented early 2013.
If you’d like to nominate a young person you can send in the attached form or pick one up from the Regional Art
Gallery, Sack Music, Mitchell Conservatorium or 2BS. All nominations are considered for the award and are current
for the whole year (so if there are lots of great nominations received one month, those who didn’t win are still in
the running for future month’s awards).
July: Sarah Davey
Bathurst High student Sarah Davey is a singer/songwriter who also
plays guitar, flute, clarinet and now teaching herself to play keyboard.
Sarah loves to sing as a form of expression and recently recorded
her first CD called You Don’t Realise. Sarah has donated profits from
the sale of her music to the Bathurst Base Hospital and the Credit
Union Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation that helps people in
developing countries gain access to basic financial services. Sarah has
sung with local choir The Mitchell Young Voices and is excited about her
musical future.
August: Brendan McLeod
Bathurst High student Brendon McLeod is a talented trombonist who
plays in Bathurst High’s Swing Factor and Concert Band as well as
alongside local musicians in the Bathurst Jazz Club. Brendon travels to
Sydney once a month to study with the great James Greening and really
enjoys making people happy through music. He has also sung with
local choir The Mitchell Young Voices.
September: Tim Burrey
Tim Burrey began studying classical guitar age 10 with Georg Mertens
at the Mitchell Conservatorium. As well as playing guitar he also plays
the bagpipes and piano. Tim has performed in his school pipe band
and concert ensembles and in 2011 won the Helen Geddes Prize for
junior contribution to music. Last year he also won the under 18
guitar section at the Bathurst Eisteddfod and was an accompanist
for the Junior Scholarship Winner. Tim is a member of the Mitchell
Conservatorium Ensemble Fretworx which perform at various local
venues and gigs. As a soloist he has played with the Bathurst Chamber
Orchestra and at the Swoon Concert in Carcoar. In February of this
year he commenced lessons with Bradley Kunda at the School of Music
at the Australian National University in Canberra after successfully
applying for their “Music After School” program. Tim is currently
studying Music 2 at the Scots School and took his AMEB AMus in
September this year. Recently, Tim organised and played in his own
concert at the Mitchell Conservatorium and donated all ticket sales to
Central West Care.
