And when Jesus
had been baptized,
just as he came up
from the water,
suddenly the
heavens were
opened to him and
he saw the Spirit
of God
descending like a
dove and alighting
on him. And a voice
from heaven said,
"This is my Son,
the Beloved, with
whom I am well
pleased."
Matthew 3: 16-17
Special Meeting
January 5
following the first service
Please plan to attend a special meeting of the congregation to be
held January 5 for the purpose of voting on hiring a campaign
consultant to support a capital campaign for the infrastructure
component of our phase 1 construction project (fellowship/
kitchen/sanctuary overflow.) Following that meeting there will
be information provided on the 2014 budget.
Bi-Annual Meeting
January 12
following the first service
The biannual meeting of the church to approve the 2014 budget,
elect voting members to the Synod assembly and accomplish
other regular business will be held on January 12.

Appreciating Infrastructure
The congregational council
has called a special meeting
January 5 for the purpose
of considering a recommendation to hire a campaign consultant to work
with us on our next capital campaign. I hope you
can be present for this
meeting. Please also feel
free to ask any questions
you have ahead of time.
The council and I are always available. The council will also appoint a
new building committee
at their meeting on January 14.
It seems likely that construction of a new fellowship hall and kitchen (as you see in the dark gray area
of the plan) will happen in phases so that we can con-
tinue our program ministry at the same rate. No one
is interested in providing less support to our Christian Education program,
for instance, or less meals
to the homeless or reducing the financial support
we provide the larger
church and the broad
range of ministry that
provides (seminaries, disaster response, campus
ministry, etc.)
The first step of our project will probably include
connecting to the city’s
sanitary sewer system
and relinquishing our
reliance on a 34-year-old
septic system. While not a
dramatic improvement,
this is a step that is long
overdue. Also, hearing

Bullying is a very real problem that happens on a
daily basis in our world. Sometimes it may be difficult to recognize when bullying is occurring and
sometimes we may not know how to prevent it from
happening. For the victims that are being bullied the
world can be a scary, even fatal place. A documentary on this subject called ‘Bully’ (p13) will be shown
in Ankeny at the Springwood Theater.
The Ankeny Ministerial Association, Ankeny Community Education, and the Springwood Theatres are
hosting this documentary. This will be an educational
and eye opening event. We hope you can join us.
All parents and youth are invited to attend the special screening, on Sunday, January 26. The documentary will start at 1:00 pm and a discussion on the film

Staff Thank you
Thank You
from Ruth Wram
Many thanks from the RLC staff for your generosity
this Christmas. We are blessed to serve such a wonderful congregation. God’s peace to you all in the
new year, Pastor Lisa, Janice, Sarah and Ricardo.
Dear Pastor Lisa and the singing group,
I really enjoyed the singing. It was perfect, and it was
so good to see so many of my church friends coming
down my hall and stopping at my door! I wish for all
of the Resurrection family to have a blessed holiday!
(Ruth was one of the people home when RLC went Christmas caroling.)
Thank You
A huge THANK YOU to ALL OF RLC. Both Tom and
I have received meals, cookies, gift cards, thinking of
you cards, prayers, well wishes, visits, Carolers, and
on and on throughout all of 2013. Never have we
been so lucky to be a part of a church family as we
are to have RLC. We appreciate everything everyone of you has done for
us throughout the year.
Newsletter
Souper Bowl
Tom & Chris Yancy
If you are not currently receiving the newsletter by
e-mail or picking your copy at the church and would
like to, please let Janice know at 964-7392 or
[email protected].
A Souperfantastic Souper Bowl!
Once again we will be holding a food drive competition between the fans of two teams that will be in the
Super Bowl. Will it be the Packers, or the Seahawks,
or the Broncos? Or two other teams. Pick a team and
cheer them on by bringing food
for the hungry. Your donations of
canned items will be given to the
food pantry at the Neveln Center.
RLC Kids go to The Playground for Kids
On Friday, January 17, from 5:30 – 7:30 pm,
we will have our annual RLC kids night at
The Playground for Kids. All kids from
RLC will get in free (sponsored by the
Christian Education board.) Upon arrival,
just tell the employees that you are there
with Resurrection Lutheran Church. Soda
and popcorn will be provided partway
through the evening. January’s bound to
be chilly, so bring the kids and let them
burn off some energy and have fun together! The Playground for Kids is located
2401 SE Tones Dr., Suite 7 in Ankeny (in a
strip mall across the road from Chips and
Outback restaurants) and features inflatable's and playground equipment. Hope to
see your family there!

The WELCA ladies served fifty-one Penguin swimmers a tasty ham ball dinner with all the
trimmings, along with pizzelles & krumkake cookies. The Penguins like RLC is
hospitality, easy access to the building,
friendship and of course, great food prepared and served for them. We enjoy doing this. It's a great fund raiser for
WELCA. Thanks to all who donated food and helped
with preparation and serving.
Our next Bible study will be held on Thursday, January 9. This month we will be studying Abigail, a calm strategist, taken from 1 Samuel
25: 18-19. We welcome everyone on Thursdays. Join us!
Today is the oldest you've ever been, yet the
youngest you'll ever be, so enjoy this day while
it lasts.
Wishing everyone a Blessed New Year!
The “It Shall Be Done” group meets every Thursday at 9:30 a.m. The first Thursday of the month we have a
Bible study taken from the church magazine, Gather. The rest of the month we have fun projects going
with coffee on the side. Join Us!
this time around. With a few new faces for fresh
ideas, and experienced hands to remind us how we
got to this point, we will be in good shape.

from colleagues about the problems we could encounter if we don’t get it done, I begin to be truly excited about installing better infrastructure. Inadequate equipment in this regard could really put a
damper on our reputation as a hospitable and welcoming congregation. One suggestion a council member made to make the project more appealing for
fundraising purposes is to call it an “underground
water feature.” That’s a euphemism I can support!
We can’t do effective ministry at 914 NW Ash Drive if
we don’t have the physical structure to support it.
Sometimes our improvements will be subtle, but they
are no less vital to our mission. Please keep our planning and discussion in your prayers, so that we are
always moving forward in the direction that God intends.
Further good news is that most of the previous building committee members will be returning to the effort

Healing Service
On January 18/19 we will incorporate the Healing Lit- meditation and lighting of candles as
urgy into our regular worship services. In the service we lift up prayers for ourselves or oththere will be time for laying on of hands, prayer and
ers. Please join us.
WELCA Winter Event
The winter WELCA meeting is planned for Sunday,
January 26, 2014 at RLC from 2:00 to 3:30 pm (snow
date will be February 9.) The program will be on the
Sak Saum ministry located in Cambodia. This selfsustaining ministry is dedicated to the rescue, restoration, transformation and rehabilitation of vulnerable and exploited women and men. Their goal is to
create a program which facilitates vocational training,
outreach and business. They help twelve girls each
year and employ fifty+ men and women through the
Vocational Training Center. Please join us to learn
more about this important ministry. Some of their
products will be available for purchase. A sign up
sheet will be available later in January.
Shelter Meal
Social Ministry will be serving a meal of soup, bread,
peaches and bars at the Central Iowa Homeless Shelter on Saturday evening, January 25, 2014.
A sign-up sheet will be available
in the fellowship area in January.
Winter Weather
Preschool Enrollment

rarely be cancelled due to weather conditions. Please
use your best judgment on attending if the weather
is bad. Other activities may be cancelled due to

need to be notified, notices may be sent to local TV
stations. Emails may be sent. Notice may also be provided on the RLC Facebook page.
Discovery World preschool is accepting the enrollment of members beginning January 6 thru 15. After
January 15, enrollment will open to the public.

idea what Neo was talking about.
In the first article we learned that, Pastor Dan revealed to Neo that he is thinking of giving up the
ministry. Dan tells Neo that when he was in seminary, he felt like he learned all the answers---he felt
like a fundamentalist. Now he feels “like a fundamentalist who’s losing his grip---whose fundamentals
are cracking and fraying and falling apart and slipping through” his fingers. But now he realizes that
life is messy and there are no neat, uncomplicated
answers to many of life’s problems. He’s not even
sure what the truth is anymore.
Neo draws a time line like the one below and begins
a crude history lesson for Dan to show how mankind
moved through different stages of history. Specifically he gives some examples of changes that took
place in moving from the Medieval world to the
Modern world.
Next, Neo uses an analogy. “Puberty is a period of
life children experience, and after it, they are never
children again (at least biologically).” “To be postmodern means to have experienced the modern
world and to have been changed by the experience--After asking Dan a number of probing questions, Neo changed to such a degree that one is no longer modconcludes, “You have a modern faith, a faith you de- ern. What Dan was experiencing in his faith walk was
a move from the modern Christianity he grew up

LSI—Celebrating 150 Years!
When Rev. J.M. Schueller founded a Lutheran orphanage back in 1864, later known as the Bremwood
Lutheran Children’s Home, he could have never
imagined the legacy it would leave.
LSI exists because of people of faith who were so
moved by God’s love that they made it their life’s
work to pour out love for others—for children, for
moms and dads, for refugees, for people with disabilities and for senior adults. LSI is proud to be an
affiliated social ministry organization of the ELCA
(Evangelical Lutheran Church in America). Thank
you for your support and prayers as this ministry of
compassion continues today!
Nor could other Lutheran pastors have foreseen their
legacy — those in Stanton that planted the roots of
Lutheran Social Services of Iowa and those in Beloit
that founded the Beloit Lutheran Children’s Home.
All of these legacies tell the story of LSI, which has
