The pleasure you get from driving a BMW is the result of fine engineering – always setting the benchmark, because it is based on much more than
just engine power. This is the tradition behind BMW EfficientDynamics. Every BMW already includes many technologies such as Valvetronic and
Lightweight Construction, that boost dynamics while simultaneously reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. Starting in 2009, BMW will
introduce the Advanced Diesel engines, equipped with BluePerformance Technology, they are considered to world’s cleanest diesel engines. Also
going into production in the near future is the BMW ActiveHybrid – an intelligent, performance-oriented engine combining combustion and electronics.
Finally the visionary CleanEnergy hydrogen-powered engine, already used in the Hydrogen 7 – a nearly emission-free BMW 7 Series Sedan.

High Precision Injection
In this cutting-edge generation of direct
injection, the Piezo injectors in the BMW
535i xDrive are positioned very close to
the spark plugs. They inject fuel at high
pressure and with extreme precision.
Several injections are possible per ignition
process. Thanks to fast and flexible
electronic control, the timing and quantity
of injections can be precisely adjusted to
the power requirement, the temperature,
and the pressure in the cylinder – for more
output and greater efficiency. (535i xDrive)
Valvetronic
Instead of using a traditional throttle,
Valvetronic technology lets the BMW
5 Series engine breathe more easily by
varying the lift height of the valves to regulate
air intake. The result: improved cold starts,
smoother running, and a significant drop
in fuel consumption. Using revolutionary
technologies like this, BMW has improved its
overall average fuel economy more than any
other manufacturer (528i, 528i xDrive, 550i).
Efficient automatic transmissions
The new generation of highly efficient
automatic transmissions increases
performance, comfort, and fuel efficiency.
Lightweight construction
Our engineers use lightweight aluminum
throughout our vehicles, in the front section,
for example, or for the suspension. The BMW
in-line six-cylinder engine, an aluminum/
magnesium composition, is the lightest in its
class. Taken together, all these weight-saving
measures lead to lower fuel consumption and
better axle load distribution for more agility –
especially in curves.
Thanks to innovative EfficientDynamics
features, BMW has been able to significantly
reduce CO 2 emissions in many models. But
that’s just the beginning. We’re carrying on
our research in terms of EfficientDynamics
– in the quest to bring you even more driving
pleasure with even less emissions.

ensures optimum headlight brightness in all
kinds of weather. When the lights are on, the
headlights are automatically cleaned in parallel
with the windshields (optional on 528i).

o Adaptive Headlights, for improved visibility in bends: the adjustable headlights are directed
into the bend when the vehicle starts cornering (standard on 535i xDrive and 550i).

s Adaptive Brakelights help vehicles
travelling behind you to evaluate your braking
more accurately: in the event of an emergency
stop, the illuminated area of the brakelights
is increased. So traffic travelling behind can
tell in an instant the difference between a light
tap on the brake pedal and a hard stop – for
increased driving safety.

s Leather sport steering wheel very comfortable grip thanks to small diameter (379 mm),
three spokes, with multi-function buttons; the integrated buttons can be used to operate
the radio, CD drive, and telephone while on the move. Two buttons are available for user-defined
functions. (Optional on the BMW 528i and 528i xDrive.)
s Six-speed manual transmission enables
a very sporty drive. Smooth, with perfect
ratios and precise, short-throw gearshifts.
The addition of a sixth gear and the reduced
spacing of gear ratios mean that you can
make even more individual use of the engine
power provided.
o Six-speed sports automatic transmission with sports mode with short shifting times for
particularly dynamic driving (available on the BMW 550i).
o Six-speed automatic transmission with
Steptronic. The gearshift mechanism enables
very fast, immaculate gear changes – for truly
dynamic performance.

s iDrive Controller: This turn/press button
enables intuitive control of different functions
shown on the Control Display. Four menus can
also be opened via the direct access buttons,
namely CD, radio, navigation, and telephone.
o Lane Departure Warning system uses
a camera to monitor when the vehicle is
approaching lane markings, and immediately
warns the driver via a steering wheel vibration.
The system is designed for country roads and
motorways, and is switched on and off with
a button in the multi-function steering wheel
(available on BMW 535i xDrive and 550i).
s Info Display with glare-free and precise
analog indicators; information such as
time, outside temperature, or trip mileage
can be checked using LC displays on the
instrument panel.
o Head-Up Display shows the driver relevant
information, such as the current speed. Other
display data include direction arrows from
the Navigation System, Active Cruise Control
functions with Stop & Go function, Lane
Departure Warning system, and Check/Control
data (available on the BMW 535i xDrive and
550i).
s Control Display with TFT screen (6.5 inch,
colour) for displaying functions that are
accessed using the Controller (e.g., onboard computer or radio). In conjunction with
the Navigation System, it has an 8.8 inch
monitor.
o Navigation System with 8.8 inch colour
display, including Radio Professional, CD drive,
hard disk, and USB Audio integration. Navigation
directions provided by voice computer and
arrows on the display or 3D route map; splitscreen function.
s BMW Assist with Bluetooth wireless
technology offers safety and convenience
at the touch of a button from Roadside
Assistance to Automatic Collision Notification
and Stolen Vehicle Recovery. Hands-free
calling is also available on many mobile phones.
o BMW Night Vision uses an infrared camera
to detect people and animals up to a distance
of 300 metres. The camera images appear in
the Control Display. This enables you to see
obstacles that are still out of range of the
headlights, so you can react in good time
(available on the BMW 550i).
s Park Distance Control (PDC), front and
rear, facilitates parking and manoeuvring in
confined spaces; the distance between your
car and an obstacle is indicated by an acoustic
signal and a visual representation in the
Control Display.

above 30 km/h and maintains that speed
(activated via left-hand control stalk).

to a stand-still in bumper-to-bumper driving,
with automatic restart in typical “stop and go”

outstanding sound, 13 loudspeakers creating

loudspeakers ensures brilliant sound.
o BMW Individual Audio System with
Dirac LiveTM (available on the BMW 535i xDrive
and 550i).
s Radio Professional, 4-channel amplifier,
aerial diversity, scan function, CD drive with
title scan and automatic CD insert/eject, six
loudspeakers, and MP3 functionality.
o USB/Audio Integration allows Apple iPods,
MP3 players, and USB sticks to be connected
for listening to audio files. Operation and
playback via the Controller, the functional
bookmarks, the steering wheel buttons, or
the relevant audio system.
o SIRIUS Satellite Radio fully integrated into
iDrive. Includes one-year subscription.
o CD changer, for six CDs, integrated into the
glove compartment.
o Voice control system enables you to
control radio stations, navigation destinations,
or telephone entries, as shown in the Control
Display (this function is part of the Navigation
System).

hands-free telephone operation with approved
Bluetooth-enabled mobile phones, which can
be operated by voice control or by using the
multi-function buttons on the steering wheel.

with the ECE driving cycle (93/116/EC) made up of approximately one third urban traffic and two thirds
extra-urban driving (based on the distance covered). CO2 emissions are measured in addition to fuel

consumption. Note that fuel consumption is determined for vehicles with standard equipment. Optional
equipment (such as wider tires) can have a significant impact on fuel consumption.
