Well, just because the leaves are starting to turn doesn’t mean we are through having fun at Cullasaja Club! Also, speaking about the season, we will remain open through Saturday, November 2nd. We will not be open for dinner service on Thursday, October 31st which is Halloween Night. History tells us that many of our members enjoy attending the Town of Highlands annual Halloween Party on that evening. We have Croquet every Thursday afternoon on our new lawn beginning with instructional clinics at 4:00PM with Match Play following. Please call or email Terry Fugate (526-9185 or [email protected]) to make your reservations for both the Clinic and Match Play events. Also, be sure to make plans to stay for dinner by calling the Clubhouse for reservations at 526-3531. The Cullasaja Club’s Annual Meeting of the Members will be held at 3:00PM on Sunday, September 22, 2013 in the Lower Level of the Activity Center. Immediately following the meeting there will be a Complimentary Social and Appreciation Presentation to recognize our 2013 volunteers and outgoing Board Members from both Cullasaja Club and Cullasaja HOA. We will be serving a Plated Dinner following the reception. Please call the Club at 526-3531 to make your reservations to attend the dinner that evening. Dress is Country Club Casual. There is still time to sign-up for the Cullasaja Mixed Classic Invitational that will be held on Thursday & Friday, October 3rd & 4th. This is a great event to entertain “out of town” guests and family. Our Invitational Committee has some special surprises planned for this year’s event. Call the Golf Shop now (526-9057) and make your plans to participate in the event! This year we will feature our Autumn Celebration on Friday, October 11th. Mark your calendar now to join us for our “Falling for Cullasaja” farewell for the season party! What a great way to say “so long until next season” to your new and long-time Cullasaja Family friends! Chef Marie will feature her delicious “Authentic German Buffet” and Larry has contracted “The Taylor Moore Trio” for your listening and dancing pleasure. These special food selections require advanced ordering and extended preparation time so call right now (526-353) and make your reservations to join us so that Chef Marie may plan accordingly. We were forced to postpone the first attempt due to inclement weather. We rescheduled the event for August 31st and made it half way through the event when the “dangerous weather” sirens went off and forced us off the River. Before the weather came we were able to complete two of the four races (Heats). That said, we conducted “Special Drawings” to determine the winners of the next two races and those Ducks eligible for the Championship Race. Once the eligible Ducks were determined we conducted the “Championship Race” drawing. Thank you very much for participating in this exciting event. As you may know, net proceeds for the event are deposited into the Ravenel Lake fish stocking fund. Congratulations to the following Duck Racers: Race #1 | Duck – 117 – Nancy Harrison Race #2 | Duck – 123 – Sheila Broughton Race #3 | Duck – 111 – Tim Hughes Race #4 | Duck – 178 – Bob Bailey The Grand Prize Championship Race Winner DUCK – 43 – RUFUS CHAMBERS The winner of the first four races will receive a $50 Gift Certificate for Golf shop merchandise and the Championship Winner will received a Gift Certificate for Dinner for Four (alcohol not included) 3 4625 sept_oct 13 NL club1.indd 3 9/13/13 2:21 PM CROQUET GRAND OPENING | August 2013 4 4625 sept_oct 13 NL club1.indd 4 9/13/13 2:21 PM August 2013 | CROQUET GRAND OPENING cont. 5 4625 sept_oct 13 NL club1.indd 5 9/13/13 2:21 PM MALLETS & MARTINI’S | by Terry Fugate and Ken Wheeler CROQUET PROGRAM IS GROWING EACH WEEK: Every week there is an increase in Members coming over to try their hand at croquet. The first order of business was to create a temporary “haul road”. {2} The next order of business was to demo the existing tennis courts and begin to create the “core” for the croquet court. {3} Once the sub-grade was complete, the drainage system was installed. Croquet courts are built to the same standard as a USGA putting green. {2} {4} Upon completion of the drainage system the greens mix was installed. {5} Following the laser leveling of the court, the haul road was removed, the green seeded and the surrounds were sodded. {6} On June 4th, the seed began to germinate. A month later we had approximately 90% coverage of the court surface. {7} The last obstacle to deal with was the not so aesthetically pleasing retaining wall. {3} {8} The wall received a treatment of native stone planters. In time as the plants mature the wall will fade away. {4} {5} While the construction of the court is very similar to the construction of a putting green, the maintenance will no doubt require subtle variations to fulfill the desires of croquet players. As we begin to use the new facility I welcome input on the condition of the court and what adjustments will need to be made to provide the desired characteristics of a high quality croquet lawn. {6} {7} 8 4625 sept_oct 13 NL club1.indd 8 9/13/13 2:22 PM by Terry Fugate | TENNIS AT THE TOP {1} 2013 LADIES DOUBLES CHAMPIONS {2} 2013 MIXED DOUBLES CHAMPIONS MARGARET EICHMAN & LARRY AINSWORTH. {3} JUNIOR TENNIS CLINICS DURING THE MONTH OF JULY {4} C HAMPIONS SUSAN MILLER & MARGI EICHMAN {5} MEN’S MG WINNERS {6} 2013 LADIES CHAMPIONSHIP {7} MEN’S MG GROUP {8} LADIES MG GROUP THANKS FOR ANOTHER GREAT SEASON: {1} A special thank you is in order to all of the great Cullasaja Club Members who have come out and supported our tennis program this season. September 21st Ranger Falls Interpretive Trail: I have really been trying to find different hikes from the ones we have done over and over again. So the owner of the Highland Hiker (and Highlands Mayor) recommended this one that starts at Cliffside Recreational area. It follows a trail that goes from Cliff Side Recreational Area up to Flat Mountain Road. It has a nice waterfall on it and plant life description plaques along it. It is an easy 2.5 mile loop. 2. October 5th The Caves on Glades Road: I was a little skeptical of these “caves” as I happen to know the geology of our area does not lend itself to formation of caves. I was born in southern Indiana where limestone is the bedrock and it is Riddled (another Hoosier if you get the reference) with caves. The Granite Gneiss of our area does not erode like limestone. However the age of the rocks in our area does allow for some interesting formations that , with cracking and sliding, forms caves of sorts. The particular caves we will be hiking to are located off Bull Pen Road. “Glades Road” was an old route from Walhalla to Horse Cove. It is said Moonshiners would use this route long after the state stopped maintaining it so they could avoid roadblocks on 28 and 107 at the state line set up to keep that illegal liquor from getting up here. The caves were also used, according to local stories, as a place to lay low for those bootleggers who were drawing too much attention. You can visualize grungy looking shiners setting up camps under the overhanging rocks. Bring flashlights so we can poke around and see if they left some of their product in the caves. Also the old roadbed does tend to get muddy with all the rain we have had so come prepared for it. We did 31 miles and a little under 5000 feet of climbing. This is pretty much a “Before” since we were only about 8 miles into the ride. Highest point on the Blue Ridge Parkway at Richland Balsam 3. October 19th Panthertown Valley - Black Rock: There are many trails in Panthertown valley and we have covered the standard loop several times. From the top of Little Green Mountain we have looked back toward the entrance and at the wall of Black Rock Mountain. This time we will leave the parking area and start up Black Rock instead of descending into Panthertown Valley. We will traverse the ridge until we come to side trail to a great overlook that gives us a great view back toward Big and Little Green. This is about 3.5 miles round trip. Hopefully we will also hit the leaf season and have wonderful colors to view. Please look at your calendar and see if you can make it for any of these hikes. Note to Water Aerobics Participants: September 2nd Labor Day will be the last Water Aerobics Class for the season. 11 4625 sept_oct 13 NL club1.indd 11 9/13/13 2:22 PM WGA | News 2013 Women’s Member Guest Invitational FINAL RESULTS {1} OVERALL CHAMPIONS 114 - Nelly Rice, Susan Williamson, Susan Miller, Marlene Eichman {2} OVERALL LOW GROSS CHAMPIONS {1} {2} 139 - Betsy Butler, Pam Mitchell, Sydney Dunning, Deanna Woods LOLLIPOPS FLIGHT 1ST 118 - Diane Warren, Judy Clarke, Sue Pearce, Pegi Williard 2ND 124 - London Andes, Elizabeth Wallace, Belva Horvath, Yoshiko Mizuno CANDY CANES FLIGHT 1ST 116 - Ginny Dunwody, Susan McDonell, Terri Watters, Kathleen Smithson 2ND 117 - Beth Elzemeyer, Yvonne Bailey, Jodi Graves, Carolyn Bruce LIFE SAVERS FLIGHT 1ST 129 - Liz Wilson, Pat Keon, Lindy Colson, Joyce Stevens 2ND 131 - Peggy Turner, Cecil Hines, Karen Leabo, Cynthia Bliss GUMDROPS FLIGHT 1ST 123 - Barbara Knight, Ann McRae, Annette Lovell, Tommie Goodman 2ND 130 - Ann Williams, Chris Cunningham, Caroline Ellerbe, Millice Ellerbe CUPCAKES FLIGHT - 9 HOLES 1ST 62 - Debbie Fulton, Martha Carmichael, Sammy Smith, Karen Stark 2ND 65 - Margaret Lauletta, Lori McAlear, Martha Caire, Lorraine Filice CLOSEST TO THE HOLE WINNERS DAY 1 Hole #3 Sammy Smith Hole #14 Nelly Rice Hole #17 Jenny Brawner DAY 2 Hole #3 Lori McAlear Hole #14 Kathleen Smithson Hole #17 Joy Turner 4’ 10” 3’ 7” 5’ 3” 21’ 2” 15’ 2” 8’ 7” 12 4625 sept_oct 13 NL club1.indd 12 9/13/13 2:22 PM by Larry Fruchtman | HOT OFF THE PLATE SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 14TH COUNTRY WESTERN NIGHT Johnny Webb and his Band play Country Classics and Current Country Hits. On a cold and snowy night in 1910, Ursula Todd is born, the third child of a wealthy English banker and his wife. She dies before she can draw her first breath. Yet, the author weaves this wildly inventive, darkly comic, startlingly poignant novel into a most compelling read. 2:00 pm First-Class Mail US Postage PAID Highlands, NC Permit No. 99 4625 sept_oct 13 NL club1.indd 16 CORRECTIONS Charles & Nell Seaton NEW EMAIL ADDRESS [email protected] David & Pat Brown NEW FL ADDRESS 345 Ponte Vedra Boulevard Ponte Vedra Beach, FL 32082 Gary & Teresa Minchew NEW GA HOME NUMBER 229-242-6160 TERESA’S NEW CELL NUMBER 229-356-7777 NEW EMAIL [email protected] 1371 Cullasaja Club Drive Highlands, NC 28741 We’ll meet in the Clubhouse Library: Monday October 7th 9/13/13 2:23 PM
