Black Barbershop Health Outreach
Outreach To Our
Community
Park Hill Seventh-day
Adventist Church
History of the Black Barbershop Health Outreach Program
• Started in Los Angeles in 2007 by Dr. Bill Releford D.P.M.-who was
working to salvage the limbs of people with potential limb
amputations due to diabetes
• It has become a nationwide initiative to screen Black men in
barbershops in many cities: Los Angeles, Sacramento, San Diego,
St. Louis, Kansas City, Atlanta, Chicago, New York, and others
• In participating barbershops, men are screened for hypertension,
and diabetes
• Health education is done re: hypertension, diabetes, prostate
cancer, colon cancer, and other important health issues
• As needed, those without insurance are referred to appropriate
health care facilities, and those insured advised to see their
providers as needed
• This program has received media attention on the TV program
“The View” and publications such as the LA Times, Newsweek, and
Jet magazine

Goals for the Barbershop Health
Outreach Program
• To provide screening for hypertension and
diabetes
• To educate barbers and their clients in regards to
major health issues: hypertension, diabetes, heart
disease, obesity, prostate cancer, HIV/AIDS, etc.
• To refer as appropriate those needing further care
to safety net clinics or their own providers
• To play a role in reducing health disparities
Hypertension
Screening…
What Is High Blood Pressure?
High blood pressure is present when
excessive pressure is present inside blood
vessels. Blood may not flow as easily as it
should. This puts added strain on your heart.
The extra pressure in blood vessels causes
damage over time. The damage can lead to
heart attack, stroke, kidney problems, visual
loss, and leg circulation problems. These
things are largely preventable.
Things You Might Observe Doing Blood
Pressure Screening in the Barber Shop
• Uncontrolled blood pressure
despite being on medication
• Men with high readings
without any symptoms
• Men who have not seen a
doctor for years
• High blood pressure, but no
insurance
• There will also be women
who are screened
Controlling Blood Pressure
• Eat low fat dairy products-less whole milk ,
cheese, ice cream. Eat less red meat and
more fish and poultry. The less meat you
eat, the better
• Eat more whole grains, some nuts, and less
processed foods/snack foods, and fast foods
• Exercise at least 30 minutes daily—the more
the better!
• Learn to cope with stress
More On Controlling Blood Pressure
• Measure your blood pressure At home-you can
purchase your own machine for this without a
prescription
• Maintain a healthy body weight-what is a
healthy weight?
A clue: waist size less than 35 for women and
40 for men. Losing just 10 pounds may help.
• Reduce salt intake to about 2300 mg. daily ( 1
teaspoon). Please read labels.
• Increase potassium by eating 5 or more servings
of fruits and vegetables daily
Blood Pressure and Medication
•
•
•
•
Take medication as directed
Identify medications by name not color
Know the names and doses of your medications
DO NOT stop medication unless advised to do so by
your doctor
• Remember, it may be necessary to take more than one
medication to control your blood pressure
• Call your doctor for ANY questions about your
medications, such as side effects or allergies
