According to Parks and Recreation manager, Kathleen Bergen, June through September is when the park is the most busy.
Weddings are very popular in the summer and many couples will take their pictures there, even if that’s not where they are
getting married, according to Bergen. There are also many students who take their senior pictures inside or near Enger Tower.
A few of the activities at Enger are trails for dog walking, multiple gardens, a pavilion, a gazebo and numerous hiking trails.
There is also the Enger Park Golf Course located nearby.
Enger Tower is not just a place for tourists. Many locals visit as well.
Paige Benson, one of those locals, can often be found roaming the park near Enger Tower.
“I love the view from up here, and I love to take my kids here when it’s not too cold out,” Benson said.
Benson is from the east side of Duluth and visits the park often. She loves walking on the trails and being out in nature. She said
the park is the most beautiful in the summertime, and that is when she goes there the most.
Benson also said she has seen a few weddings being set up in the park over the years, as the city allows various events to be held
in the park.
Enger Tower offers multiple views of the city including Lake Superior and the Aerial Lift Bridge.
You can visit Enger Tower anytime of year and during each season the tower presents a different picture. Enger park is open
until 10 p.m. and is located near 16th Avenue W and Skyline Drive.
The park is not very busy in the cold winter months, but it does often have some people walking around.
The gate at Enger is locked during the winter. Bergen said they do this for a couple of reasons. The gate is locked just before
Halloween, because teenagers are known to vandalize and throw things from the tower. They also don’t have anyone to plow the
parking lot when it snows.
Even though the gates are locked, many people still park at the gate and walk up to the tower.
Bergon also stated that many people don’t know about how many trails they have at Enger Park.
“Enger Tower is known for the spectacular view but sometimes people miss out on the hiking trails nearby,” Bergen said.
Bergon explained how there has been a tremendous amount of change so far. Enger Tower has been totally refurbished. They
have added new lighting, more educational kiosks, and have re-done the bathrooms and gazebo.
Marissa and Alaina Ruff are two sisters from the Twin Cities area who were visiting Enger Tower for the first time. Marissa said
she has heard about the tower from her friends and has seen pictures, but wanted to experience it for herself.
Ruff said she loves photography and wanted to take pictures at the tower.
“It was a lot of work getting up all the stairs, but the view was worth it,” Alaina said.
Marissa reportedly plans on going back to the tower for more photography opportunities.
According to the Enger Tower Restoration website, Enger Tower stands five stories high and has over one hundred stairs, it is
the highest point in Duluth. The tower previously had walk out balconies on the second story, but they fell apart and were
removed.
Enger Tower still has lookouts on each level. On the top of the tower is a green light that can be seen from far away.
According to the Enger Park Restoration website, Crown Prince Olav and Crown Princess Martha of Norway were the ones who
dedicated Enger Tower in honor of Bert Enger on June 15th 1939. Mr. Enger donated two thirds of his park estate to the city
before he died.

Enger Tower has been known to light up in different colors for different events over the years. It was lit up red for the celebration
of the Rotary Club of Duluth #25 and then blue for ovarian cancer awareness in 2013.
Those who visit Enger Tower say it is a great spot to overlook the amazing city of Duluth.
