New York Harbor is the third largest port in the United States and the
largest port complex on the Atlantic Coast. NYCEDC’s PortNYC
supports developing the City’s passenger and freight transportation
terminals to sustain the region’s economic growth. PortNYC facilities
include marine cargo terminals, rail facilities, cruise terminals, ferry
landings, and heliports within the five boroughs of the City of New York.
MARINE CARGO TERMINALS
New York City’s port facilities are America’s gateway to the largest and wealthiest consumer
market in the United States. PortNYC also supports the local economy by bringing goods to
market by vessel, the most efficient freight transportation mode. Over 500,000 containers and
235,000 tons of cargo are shipped annually through the City’s seaports. The City
promotes and incentivizes the maritime industry by designating these facilities as Significant
Maritime and Industrial Areas.

• South Brooklyn Marine Terminal ( ro-ro and project cargos)
• Lafarge Pier/New York Sand and Stone
• Red Hook Container Terminal (containers, break-bulk, and ro-ro)
South Brooklyn Marine Terminal will open in 2012, creating capacity for handling 120,000
automobiles and 360,000 tons of break-bulk and project cargos.
New York Container Terminal on Staten Island is the City’s
largest deep-sea marine facility.
New York City is a maritime hub for support services hosting tugs, barges, and major ship
repair facilities.
RAIL FACILITIES
PortNYC expands and enhances the City’s freight rail
infrastructure and operations by modernizing rail connections,
laying new track, and negotiating service contracts with Class I
railroads and shortline carriers.
Through its initiatives, PortNYC optimizes rail transportation’s
economic and environmental efficiencies by lowering
transportation costs for local businesses and eliminating trucks
from the City’s road network. All New Yorkers, in turn, benefit
from less congestion on local streets, minimized wear-and-tear,
and improved air quality.

CRUISE TERMINALS
New York City has recently invested $250 million dollars in the Manhattan and Brooklyn Cruise
Terminals, making them among the finest state-of-the-art cruise terminals in the world. Our
modern facilities provide passengers a smooth and efficient experience while embarking and
debarking. Continued investments and the industry’s top awards have made NYCruise the
departure point for more than 1.2 million passengers annually.
NYCruise is home to the world’s most spectacular
– often fastest, biggest, and most luxurious –
passenger ships. Itineraries include Bermuda,
Canada, New England, Europe, the Caribbean
and world cruises.
Each terminal is easily
accessible from NYC airports and from the area’s
major roadways. Spacious pick-up and drop-off
areas offer abundant parking as well.

FERRY LANDINGS
PortNYC maintains 12 ferry landings throughout the City.
PortNYC also launched the East River Ferry service with
NY Waterway in June 2011. The new ferry services have unlocked
the economic potential of the City’s emerging waterfront
communities. Hundreds of thousands of passengers have
relied upon the frequent, reliable service connecting
Manhattan with various destinations in Brooklyn and Queens.

AVIATION
PortNYC manages the Skyport Marina for seaplane chartered excursions and two heliports in
Manhattan. Each heliport provides charters and commuter services. The Downtown
Heliport, located on Pier 6 on the East River, provides public sightseeing tours overlooking
the Hudson River and the Upper New York Bay.
