Foreword
It gives me great joy in penning this foreword as it comes with the happy tidings that the
Exports of Leather and Leather Products has increased by 22% in the first six months of
the current financial year. All the Product segments including the Footwear Sector have
posted positive growth both in rupee as well as in dollar terms. With the optimism of
reaching exports to the tune of US $7.32 billion by the end of this year, it would indeed be
a major achievement for our industry.
In keeping with the buoyancy, we have also lined up a host of information both National
and International which would be of immense interest and use to all of you.
In the domestic news segment we have highlighted about the capacity expansion of
TATA group and their plans of augmenting their human resources to meet with the higher production.
New Autumn Moccasins with North American Elk Leather feature in our Design Section along with Luxurious
Key and Handbag Tassels which bring a playful energy to the bag and lend it with a luxurious feel.
International Market News informs you about the latest Shoe Collection from Sendra as well as about the Top
Level Management changes in Wolverine Worldwide.
In the Technology Section, we travel to the exciting world of PU materials where we look at breakthrough
technology from M/s Clariant with respect to Fire Retardant Products and M/s Huntsman’s large scale
expansion of its PU plants to cater to the growing demand.
We also feature “Innovations in Synthetic Materials & New Technology” which reports from the International
Synthetic Fair and ACLE, China on the latest latest technological inputs which have made these materials
almost ‘leather like.’
A brief report on the ‘Showcase’ of the Leather colour proposals from India to be presented at the
forthcoming MODEUROP Roundtable & Colour Club Meeting for the ‘Spring Summer 2016 season is also
presented.
The Council for Leather Exports is hosting and organizing the 33 rd International Footwear Conference in Agra
on 14th November 2014. This is a must-attend conference for the Members of the Indian Leather Fraternity and
I earnestly appeal to all our Members to participate in large numbers and gain immensely from the
deliberations at the Conference. This issue of FNI carries all the relevant details about the conference.
We are travelling through exciting times in our business and I take this opportunity to wish all
our members a VERY HAPPY AND PROSPEROUS DIWALI. May the festival of lights bring
happiness, good health and prosperity to you and your families.

Tata to create 4,000 footwear jobs
Indian conglomerate Tata has announced plans to triple the size of its footwear factory, based near its
largest tannery in Dewas. The Tannery of the Year finalist supplies to European footwear brands such as Peter
Kaiser, Gabor, Ara, Lloyd, as well as Zara and Mango. Tata International’s executive director, told sister
publication World Leather a change is taking place in the Indian market, particularly among young, professional women. There is a clear shift from traditional saris to skirts and trouser suits, and demand for more
fashionable women’s shoes has grown as a result. The Dewas based footwear factory is being expanded to
produce to 2.5 million pairs of shoes per year form the current 700,000, and will create 4,000 jobs. Tata has its
own footwear design centre near Florence, which produces design ideas and prototypes for major clients.

New Sendra collection puts the accent on shoes
Footwear firm Sendra, based in Almansa in Spain, has announced that it will add a new collection of men’s
dress shoes to its range. The company is best known for making western-style boots.
Sendra celebrated its centenary in 2013; it was exactly 100 years since founder, Andrés Sendra, returned to
Almansa from a trip to the US, where he became an admirer of cowboy boots. His grandson, Javier Sendra,
now runs the company and has applied the name of his grandfather to the new shoe collection.
The Andrés Sendra collection will include Oxford and Derby style shoes and low-cut Chelsea boots, perhaps
a concession to the brand’s boot background.

Wolverine makes board appointment
Outdoor footwear group Wolverine Worldwidehas appointed Roxane Divol to its board of directors. Ms Divol
is senior vice-president of alliances for software group Symantec. Before that she worked for consultancy
McKinsey & Company.
"Roxane Divol is a talented executive who adds valuable strategic and global perspective to our already
strong board of directors," said Blake Krueger, Wolverine Worldwide's chief executive.

Clariant claims PU foams breakthrough
Specialty chemicals company Clariant has announced a breakthrough for its Exolit OP 560 flame retardant
product.
A report by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on flame retardants in flexible foam has identified
Exolit OP 560 as “a safer alternative” to traditional products such as pentabromo diphenylether (pentaBDE).
Clariant explained on making the announcement that Exolit OP 560 works better because it is a reactive
flame retardant that eliminates unwanted emissions since it becomes chemically bonded within the
polymeric polyurethane foam structure. As a result, the Exolit OP 560 cannot leave the foam during use and
therefore cannot bioaccumulate in humans. Exolit OP is also halogen-free, and has a more favorable
toxicological and environmental profile, the company said.
“Exolit OP 560 is not only halogen-free but becomes an integral part of the PU foam, creating possibilities to
produce flexible foams with locked-in fire protection without the environmental and health concerns of
traditional flame retardants,” said Adrian Beard, head of marketing for flame retardants at Clariant. “The
US-EPA report is a step forward in easing the identification of safer alternatives by PU foam producers and
end-users.” Clariant also said it is looking to expand capacity to meet increasing demand in the move
toward more environmentally friendly and sustainable PU foams.

Huntsman expands to service PU demand
Huntsman Corporation is expanding production of methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) by investment in
a new plant at its Geismar, Louisiana site, expected to be on stream by 2018.
MDI-based polyurethanes are used in many markets, including footwear, and demand is growing at 8%
annually. The 400,000 metric ton expansion will leverage the advantages of the 760 acre Geismar site - the
largest integrated MDI production facility in the Americas region.
Anthony Hankins, president of Huntsman Polyurethanes, said: "Shale gas has significantly improved the
economics of investing in US facilities and has helped our Geismar facility to establish a strong cost
leadership position.”
In addition to its Geismar facility, Huntsman Polyurethanes operates MDI facilities at its sites in Rotterdam,
Netherlands, and Shanghai, China.
Innovations in Synthetic Materials & New Technology
The fairs witnessed a plethora of new materials and the highlight of the twin fairs was the display of
“Microfiber leather” with the latest technological inputs which have made these materials almost ‘leather
like.’
Microfiber leather is the highest grade synthetic leather and is a high-tech simulation of high-end leather
products. These synthetic leathers simulate the structure of natural leather, using sea-island superfine
micro-fibers (ultra-fine fiber bundles) and high-grade polyurethane resins as raw materials, They use needle
punched nonwoven technology of 3D structure and the material, has a lot of similar characteristics as
natural leather. It has excellent physical and chemical performance characteristics and will surely become
popular around the world. Because of its super performance, the microfiber leather is being seen as the
optimal alternative of real leather.
The significant features of microfiber leather are:
 Microfiber synthetic leather performance is as good as the real leather and the surface effect can
be achieved in line with that of the real leather
 Tear resistance, abrasion resistance, tensile strength and other physical properties are on par with
real leather, and chemically also they are cold-resistant, acid proof, alkali-resisting and non-fading
 They are light weight, soft, have good breathability, are smooth and give a good hand feeling,
and are tidy and free from wear facets
 They are Antibacterial, anti-mildew, mothproof, without any harmful substances, very environmental friendly and in fact can be labelled as a ‘Green Product’
 They are easy to cut, have a high utilization rate, are very easy to clean and possess no odours
The micro fiber leathers find readymade applications in :
 Furniture upholstery
 Clothing
 Automotive interiors
 Gloves
 Luggage and bags
 Fine inner packing material
 Shoes
 Interior decoration material

New Technology
One of the most exciting technologies seen at the fair was the “Digital Colour Printing” technology on vast
leathers and the machinery used in this process. The process was very fast and even complicated designs
with a large number of colours could easily be ‘digitally printed.’ This Technology would certainly be the
future of the world.
Another sophisticated technology was the presence of “Laser Engraving and Cutting systems” which are
high speed and very accurate. These systems can process a wide range of materials with automatic closein and without any deformation. Sophisticated Graphics Designs can be easily created through dedicated
software provided. The technology can deliver embroidered patch cutting, profiled trademark cutting,
piercing of leather, cutting and engraving on the surface as well as multi-layered material cutting, drilling
and engraving. It uses the most advanced Control Systems as also a unique intelligent predictive algorithm
for high speed, smooth and efficient operation.

In preparation for the forthcoming MODEUROP Roundtable & Colour Club Meeting for the ‘Spring Summer
2016 season, 18 Tanners had developed 462 leather/ colour proposals for presentation at this Roundtable.
These were ‘showcased’ in CSIR-CLRI Shoe Design & Development Centre and Members of the Industry
gathered for a ‘First View’ of the leathers/ colours for the ‘Spring Summer 2016’
A presentation titled “From Munich to Rosenheim in 22 days” was made to the delegates.
Shri Muhamad Yavar Dhala, Managing Director, FORWARD Group and Convenor, Finished Leather Panel,
CLE released the CD version of the presentation and the ‘first copy’ was received by
Shri KR Munikannan, Director, GOOD Leather Group in the august presence of the Industry delegates and
Team CSIR-CLRI Shoe Design & Development Centre.

Thirteen Footwear Associations from Asian Footwear Producing countries including China, Vietnam, India,
Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Phillipines, South Korea, Thailand and Taiwan under the aegis of
“CONFEDERATION OF INTERNATIONAL FOOTWEAR ASSOCIATIONS (CIFA)” will get-together at the
33rd International Footwear Conference (IFC 2014) organized and hosted by the Council for Leather
Exports on 14th November 2014 in Agra.
The 33rd IFC would comprise Country Presentations by CIFA member-associations, consisting of a comprehensive report on the status of the Footwear Industry in the member-country covering: Production, Product
& market aspects.
Guest speakers Mr Massimo Donda, Mr Peter Mangione and Mr Ferenc Schmel from Italy, USA and Hungary
respectively, will share their expertise!
For the ‘FIRST TIME,” CIFA member-associations would be presenting “Vision 2019 for the Footwear Industry”
of their respective countries.
