On Wednesday August 10 at 6:30pm, our Year 8 students and their parents/guardians are invited to an evening in the school hall where requirements for electives in years 9 and 10 will be explained. Each elective subject will be represented and you and your parents will have the opportunity to discuss subjects, assessments, requirements and then make INFORMED decisions about electives for study for Year 9 and 10. Please be aware that once Year 9 begins, it is very difficult to move from one elective to another due to the fact that we have set timetables and staffing based on the information you have given us THIS year. Year 12 Trial Higher School Certificate From the Principal School Show As our school sign states, “not long to go”!! Congratulations to all students, staff, parents, helpers, sponsors and exstudents who are ensuring that this years’ production is as big, if not bigger, than every other year!! From all reports, it is set to be another fantastic, successful and brilliant performance! Limited tickets available. Be quick if you want to be thoroughly entertained! One of our ex-students from Randwick Boys’ High School and a strong performer in Rocka and The Show is Graeme Isaako (class of 2006). Graeme has been a contestant on ‘Australian Idol’ and ‘So you think you can dance’ (don’t judge)! Most recently he was understudy to Simba in the Lion King. I had the pleasure of watching Graeme perform on Thursday night in Disney’s Aladdin, at the Capitol Theatre. He plays a major role and is once again understudy, this time to Aladdin!! Graeme has often assisted at the show and performed as an ex-student. Trial HSC continues this week. Year 12 students have reported that the examinations so far have been quite challenging. We wish all Year 12 students success in their exams. All students need to be aware that the area outside the hall is a ‘no go zone’ whilst the Year 12 students complete their exams. SPORT It was my pleasure to be able to watch the U/15 Rugby Team play the final of the North West Zone competition last week. The team played Asquith Boys High School, who had some talented backs who were obviously Rugby League players. Asquith got out to a big lead at half time. Randwick Boys’ came back strongly to win the second half; however, the big lead was too much and despite many individuals playing strongly, Asquith held on to win. I then had the pleasure of attending the North West Zone Annual Sports awards at TG Millner Oval. It was the first time all 7 Principals from the 7 schools that make up the Zone, were in attendance to present and accept sports trophies for the various teams who were Zone Premiers. Randwick Boys’ were Premiers in 3 sports – 15B Oz Tag, Senior Table Tennis and 1st Grade Waterpolo. Congratulations to all students and staff for these fantastic results. The Waterpolo trophy will have a different school name engraved for the first time since 2004, as Homebush has dominated the sport! Page 2 05 August 2016 Issue 20 Olympics Coming events for Term 3 Let the games begin! The Olympics are about to get underway in Rio and we would like to wish another of our ex-students well competing in the Waterpolo. Johnno Cotterill (class of 2005) is a member of the Australian men’s Waterpolo team and will compete in his second Olympic games. Congratulations Johnno and play well!! On behalf of the school community, I would like to wish all athletes from all countries well. Of course, we will be cheering loudest for all our Aussie competitors!! Go Australia! On all occasions, we require written authorisation from parents to be able to approve this. This is especially important on sport afternoons (Wednesdays) when large numbers of students are off site at different venues. The next P & C Meeting will be held on Tuesday 16 August at Students should bring their parental letters to the Deputy and they will be signed. Letters are then taken to the rolls office where the early leave is logged on our system. 7pm Staff Common Room All welcome Guest Speaker at the next P&C meeting - Guest speaker Senior Constable Rachael Martin, School Liaison Police Rachael Martin is speaking about topics like cyber bullying, dangers and legalities of social networks, alcohol, drugs and a lot more parents of teenage boys need to be aware of. Everyone is invited to come for the talk at 7pm and/or the monthly P&C meeting. - Update on past fundraising efforts and future events - Principal’s Report (Please note NEW starting time) Birgit Schickinger P&C Student feeling unwell while at school If your son/ward becomes unwell at school, he needs to: 1. Ask teacher for a note to go to the office. 2. After reporting to the office he will be sent to the Deputy Principal. 3. The Deputy Principal will decide if you need to be called. This ensures your son/ward’s attendance will be correctly marked for the rest of the day. Administration Page 3 05 August 2016 Issue 20 A Safe and Healthy School Does your son have a medical condition about which the school should be aware? Has his medical treatment for an existing condition changed? We may need to implement a Health Care Plan to support your son at school. If you learn of a medical condition about which the school should be aware or if your son’s treatment changes for an existing condition, please let the school know so that together we can maintain a safe and healthy environment for all students. Sport - wet weather On Wednesday afternoons when sport is cancelled due to rain, the students are to remain at school in ‘wet weather’ classrooms to do schoolwork while supervised. My name is Veron Singh, I am very proud to be part of the Youth Frontier Program 2016 this year. The program is based around creating a project for the community or even the wider community. This project can be based on various topics that are given or you can make your own topic and project. I’ve chosen the topic Environment and Conservation because I think it’s important to live sustainably and understand why you need the environment and why it needs you. The reality of unsustainable living has led to a series of unfortunate consequences which we are beginning to realise and it affects us in our everyday lives. The consequences of climate change, deforestation and pollution are huge problems that would cost us and more importantly the environment. It is therefore up to individuals to make a difference, even in the smallest of ways. This website is to help you understand how you are in power and the actions you take all affect the environment. Please visit my website and take part in a quick survey. Each show is based upon a particular theme, such as Australiana, books, iconic Þgures, movies, or decades, and is made up of approximately 15 items representing these themes through dance, singing, drama, costumes, lighting, sound and all the magic the theatre has to offer. The Show is held at NIDA Parade Theatre, Kensington, where the students have the opportunity to work with industry professionals and perform in front of an audience of over 700 people each night. This year, Randwick Girls’ & Boys’ High Schools wish to celebrate the joy and beauty of COLOUR! Come with us on a spin around the colour wheel – from the primary colours of red, yellow and blue to all the other colours in the rainbow and all the shades in between! Many of our most exciting, best known pieces of music take inspiration from the world of colour – songs such as Blue Hawaii, Black or White and Somewhere Over The Rainbow! Let’s once again enjoy the explosion of colours in The Wizard of Oz, and pay tribute to the Olympics which celebrate athletes from all races and cultures, as represented in the fivecoloured rings.
