Leadership Investiture
Our Leadership Investiture took place on Friday 9th September at
11.15am. Our new Student Representative Council members from all
years were inducted, as were our newly elected Prefect body. School
Captain and Vice-Captain were also sworn in. Parents and Guardians attended as we congratulated and celebrated the leadership
qualities of our elected representatives. It was wonderful to have all
3 levels of Government in attendance, Cnr Noel D’Souza – Mayor
of Randwick, Mr Bruce Notley-Smith – State member for Coogee
and Mr Matt Thistlethwaite – Federal member for Kingsford. All
presented extremely worthwhile sentiments concerning Leadership
and we were grateful that they could join us and share their vision of
leadership. Thanks to all staff and students who assisted in making
this event a success.
Congratulations to:
Ryan Saxena – School Captain
Steines Punithan – School Vice Captain
Prefects: Dowsen Pereira, Adam Attia, Yianni Kotopoulos, Duncan
Evans, Kalani Anitelea-Hand, Finn Hempstead.
Student Representative Council:
Yr 8: Hamish Murray, Grigory Gerasimov
Yr 9: George Li, Joshua Hillard, Freddy Whalebone
Yr 10: Henry Lopez Lopez, Veron Singh, Josiah Cocking, Yusuf
Bozkurt
Yr 11: Oliver Alum, Armand Brooks, Minwoo Yoo, Marcus Mailata,
Dennis Zub
A fine group of leaders who, I am sure, will lead from the front.
Year 11 PDHPE
It was wonderful to see our Year 11 PDHPE students completing their first aid certificates this week.
Mr Marando arranged for the students to complete the
course. Well done to all boys involved.
Year 12 Music – HSC performances
Our Year 12 Music students were marked
for their HSC Practical component this week.
Markers from other schools reviewed each student’s performance and will now mark accordingly. A huge thank you to Ms Olsen, HT and
Year 12 Music teacher and to Mr Harris for
assisting. We now look forward to receiving
their marks once the theoretical component is
completed during the HSC exams.
Randwick Council Native Garden Grant
I would like to congratulate Zeke
Dauth and Sarah Brill (mother and parent) for writing an application to Randwick Council for the Garden awards.
We were successful and a grant is on the
way! Well done to Sarah and Zeke and
thank you for representing our school
at the awards ceremony.

Gifted and Talented program interviews continue
As this is my first year as Principal of Randwick Boys’ High School,
I am extremely impressed with the quality of our students as well
as the quality of our prospective students. Each afternoon for the
past 3 weeks, myself, Mr Jackson (Year 7 Adviser 2017) and either
Ms Edwards or Ms Sofo have been interviewing Year 6 students who
are interested in gaining a place in our Gifted and Talented class for
2017. The quality of these fine young men has astounded me. Unfortunately we will not be able to offer all 40 of them a place in the class;
however, the ones who miss out will surely enjoy their time in other
Year 7 classes from next year. The future of our student body looks
to be in fabulous hands!

National Junior Handball
Championships
On the 30th and 31st of July, the National Junior Handball Championships were held at Runaway Bay Sports Centre on the Gold Coast.
It was an honour to be selected to represent NSW in the U18s
Boys side. As Vice Captain, it was my job to help lead the warm up
sessions before the games, and also assist the Captain in instructing
the team. It was an awesome experience! We won all but one of our
matches, and went on to win medals, making NSW the new U18s
National Champions!
I’m absolutely loving playing European handball and if anyone
is interested in a fast and challenging new sport, I would definitely
recommend giving it a go.

RBHS Merit Award Program
The Randwick Boys’ High School PBL Merit Award Program is
a one-year cycle of student recognition. There are four levels in the
program.
Level 1
In line with the PBL core values, merit certificates are awarded to
students for being:
SAFE
RESPECTFUL
LEARNER
Next week, Randwick Boys’ High School will be celebrating this
annual event through various activities:
Level 2
To achieve the second meritorious level students are required to
earn merits in each area of the core values. As such, distinctions are
issued for being safe, for being respectful and for being a learner.
To earn distinction certificates students must earn the following
merits:
SAFE:
5 Merits = 1 Safe Distinction Certificate
RESPECTFUL:5 Merits = 1 Respectful Distinction Certificate.
LEARNER:
On Thursday 8th September, Australia celebrated R U OK? Day.
This day encourages people to begin conversations to enable people
to open up about how they are feeling and it all starts with 3 little
words…
5 Merits = 1 Learner Distinction Certificate
Monday 12th and Tuesday 13th September – Years 7 – 10 will be
participating in sessions with Headspace.
Tuesday 13th September – A mufti day is being held to celebrate the
event and to fundraise for the charity. Students are to wear yellow or
bright colours to support the day and a gold coin donation will be
collected in roll call. Students are to take care to wear appropriate
clothing, otherwise they will be asked to change into school uniform.
Also, students are to ensure that they have the correct shoes to change
into for their lessons.
Tuesday 13th September - A fundraising barbeque at lunch.
Level 3
To achieve the next meritorious level, students are required to gain
distinction certificates in each area of the matrix: Safe, Respectful,
Learner. This will result in students being presented with a badge that
represents their achievement of the core values of PBL.
SAFE:
1 Safe Badge
3 Distinction Certificates = RESPECTFUL:
1 Respectful Badge
3 Distinction Certificates = LEARNER:
1 Learner Badge
3 Distinction Certificates = Join us in the celebration and don’t forget to begin the conversation:
R U OK? A conversation could change a life.
Level 4
Once students have received a badge in each category, they will
be awarded a gold medallion by the Principal. Each gold medallion
will be specific to the students year group.
Students, please bring your merit
and distinction certificates to

Chess Report
On this basis, our team was then invited to contest the Quarter
Finals. Our opponents were Newington, and, we won that game too.
This now meant that our team was in the Semi Finals.
This year our school entered three teams in the NSW Junior Chess
League competition.
Our two Junior teams consisted of Grigory Gerasimov, Arkansh
Maheshwari, Xavier Leal Smith, Toby Poulos, George Antill, Joshua
Hyde and Gideon Bellamy.
Unfortunately, our Junior B team lost a few members and were
unable to continue for the whole season.
We entered the Semi Final hoping for another win. However,
Sydney Technical College were too strong for us and we finished our
competition having reached the Semi Final round.
So, to the students who gave up their time to represent the school,
and who achieved so much – CONGRATULATIONS - you did an
outstanding job.
I would also like to express my appreciation to the parents who
sometimes waited until after 6 PM for their sons to arrive home
from the games.
The Junior A team secured a few wins, but hopefully, the experience of this year’s competition will make the team stronger for next
year’s competition.
Finally, to Mr Geoff Grasso, who, at some inconvenience to himself,
assisted with the supervision of the students – many many thanks.
Without your assistance, our participation in the chess competition
would have been considerably diminished.
Lastly, our Intermediate team deserves a special mention.
On the accompanying results table, you will see that our team –
Ruben Samer, Warren Song, Ethan Lee Chalk, Joe Francio and Veron
Singh – either won or drew against every other team except Sydney

Time to PAY sport bus fees
In order for students to have the best possible sport experience, our
school participates in the North West Metropolitan Zone, which is
based in the northern suburbs of Sydney. This means that the boys
play on a home and away basis and every second week are required
to travel to sport.
We provide chartered buses to transport the players to sport and
this is a very expensive exercise.
Failure to pay this $60.00 fee could jeopardise participation in this season’s finals and future zone competitions.

A very talented RBHS 1st Grade Water Polo team secures first win
of the season defeating Asquith 15 to 3. RBHS proved why it is the
best team in the zone and as worthy opponents Asquith had little
chance against a rampant RBHS team lead by Duncan Evans and Scott
Dyson. Our 14s developmental team absolutely crushed Homebush
with a man of the match performance by Alexander Ivanov scoring a
record 9 goals in the game. Looks like Randwick Boys’ has unearthed
another water polo gem for the future.

Randwick Basketball undefeated in Round One
With our senior basketball team graduating this year it was always
going to be a rebuilding year, but in fine form coached by Mr Noreika
the youngsters have lived up to the task with gritty performance
against Asquith.
In a tough competition round against Asquith the ‘Wicks’ dominated in all 4 grades with 1st grade just missing out on the three points
after being unlucky to concede in the final minute meaning they had
to share the points.
Controlled RBHS Tennis team makes short
work of Homebush in the first round
Mr Burke’s two tennis teams took all the points against a stuttering
Homebush team. As for his opponents, coach Mr Burke said, “They
came out going for their shots. Once we got through that tricky period
right at the start, where they were hitting the ball really well, Randwick
Boys’ High School adjusted to the conditions and settled down and
played, I think, two really good matches.” Man of the match Nathan
Ong hit the court running in the first round with some outstanding
passing shots that set the tone for the day.
RBHS Volleyball teams fall short in Round One
RBHS Futsal Teams stun Asquith
Randwick’s futsal teams stunned Asquith with an outstanding
performance in the first round of matches. The WICKS made a real
statement of intent for the rest of the competition with crushing
victories in all grades over the Asquith teams and a breathtaking
performance in their opening 15s match. The coaches were very
pleased with the teams’ performances and believed that there is still
room for improvement in their respective teams.
Randwick Boys’ High School opened the season with three losses
against Asquith and Homebush. Despite the early lead, the first
grade team was run down by Asquith. However, coach Mr Ngyuen is
remaining positive. Mr Ngyuen stated, “We’re struggling with being
young and inexperienced. We’re working through it. It’s just going
to take a little more time.”
Our 14s developmental team made Homebush work very hard
to win their games in two close sets. Under the guidance of coach
Ms Yiangou the boys are enjoying themselves and learning what it
takes to work as a team.
Mixed results for our Oztag teams
The Oztag teams both senior and junior divisions headed to Asquith
HS for round one. Despite forecasts of heavy rain for Wednesday, the
juniors managed to come through unscathed and won both games.
The first grade teams however, got quite a different experience for
their first game of the competition where Asquith were far too good
jumping to an early lead and never looking back. I’m sure Mr Jackson
will have the first grade team up and ready for next week. Our second
grade team showed signs of being a team that would be hard to beat
this season with a great team performance. Some of these players
could be pushing for a first grade call up!
