Mill Creek Park
Mill Creek Park is located 7 miles Northwest of Marshall, IL on the
Lincoln Heritage Trail Road (Clarksville Road). Mill Creek Park
opened May 29, 1982 and consists of 2,600 acres of land, a 139
site campground with shower facilities and a playground, 15 miles of
ATV trails, courtesy dock facilities, annual leased docks, fuel dispensing, cabin and boat rentals. The Park also has 4 shelters and 3
playgrounds. and is nestled around Mill Creek Lake, 811 acres of
boating and fishing fun welcomes our visitors!
Welcome to another great year at the Clark County Park District!
What is going on at Mill Creek lake you ask? Great question!. We are
coming off another great year for boating, camping and fishing and have
set our sights on making this year more enjoyable for you and your family,
something for everyone, young and old!
For scheduled special events, go to page 6. All of what you have come
to expect from us plus more! We are excited to bring a great activity to our
Senior’s this year (page 28) Senior Pontoon tours. An hour boat ride and
lunch! For those that don’t have a boat or don’t want to get their boat out
to enjoy a ride on the lake, this opportunity will let you watch the lake
wake up in the spring, watch the wildlife grow up in the summer and finish
up by watching the trees go to sleep in the fall!
We are also bringing you the 2nd annual Fireworks on the water on July
3rd. This year, at the back of the park we will also have entertainment before the fireworks and kids activities that include inflatable's from D.I.Y.
Rental! Bring the family out early and spend the afternoon relaxing at Mill
Creek!
You will also see some construction going on this year at the Equestrian
camp area with the addition of water to the camp area, a shelter and a gravel road getting in there. Also at the Dam area, you will see a pit privy being added, a shelter and more trail improvements on the Mountain Bike
trail. These two opportunities are brought to us through grants with the
Illinois Department of Natural resources.
There is always something exciting going on at Mill Creek and we would
love to hear from you as to what you would like to see next. Whether it is
an event, amenity or a service that would benefit you on your stay, let us
know and we will see what we can work up.
So have fun! Bring the family, your friends or even your business out for
a fun day at Mill Creek. We are always glad to help you add wonderful
memories to your photo album!

A. Campsites
1. One Month Campsite Reservations – A deposit of $50.00 is required at the time the reservation is made. Cancellation of the reservation one month or more prior to the first day of
the beginning of the site occupancy will result in the return of the full amount of the deposit. Cancellation of the reservation at least two weeks, but less than one month, prior to the
first day of the site occupancy will result in a return of $25.00 (50%) of the deposit. A cancellation of the reservation less than two weeks prior to the first day of the site occupancy
will result in the retention of the full $50.00 deposit by the District.
a. The balance of the one month reservation shall be paid on the first day of site occupation, as indicated by the reservation.
b. A cancellation of a portion of the site occupancy that occurs during the first two weeks of
the reservation period and is to take effect during the first two weeks of occupancy shall
result in a 50% retention of the prorated cost of the remaining days of the reservation
period.
c. A cancellation of a one month reservation that occurs after two weeks of occupancy of
the site will result in retention of 100% of the prorated daily cost of the days remaining
for the reservation.
d. If a camper chooses to cancel a portion of the reservation, but also retain a portion of the
same reservation, the cancellation shall be considered a full cancellation of the existing

of occupancy.
2. Multi-Month Campsite Reservations- A deposit of $150.00 is required at the time the reservation is made. Cancellation of the reservation one month or more prior to the first day of

first day of the site occupancy will result in a return of $100.00 to the camper and District
retention of $50.00 of the deposit. A cancellation of a reservation less than two weeks
prior to the first day of site occupancy will result in the return of $50.00 of the deposit to
the camper and retention of $100.00 by the District.
a. The deposit will be held in escrow until the last month of the camper’s reservation period
for a given season, at which time the $150.00 deposit will be deducted from the rental
fee of the last month per season.
b. Payment for the first month of the site rental and all subsequent months are due in full
the first day of each new month of rental, until the last month of the reservation, at
which time the $150.00 deposit will be deducted from the monthly fee amount.

RECYCLING FACTS
1.
2.
A used aluminum can is recycled and back on the grocery shelf as a new can, in as little as 60 days!
Used aluminum beverage cans are the most recycled item in the U.S, but other types of aluminum, such
as siding, gutters, car components, storm window frames and lawn furniture can also be recycled.
3. Recycling one aluminum can saves enough energy to run a TV for three hours – or the equivalent of a
half a gallon of gasoline.
4. More aluminum goes into beverage cans than any other product.
5. Because so many of them are recycled, aluminum cans account for less than 1% of the total U.S. waste
stream, according to EPA estimates.
6. An aluminum can thrown away will still be a can 500 years from now.
7. There is no limit to the amount of times an aluminum can, can be recycled.
8. We use over 80,000,000,000 aluminum soda cans every year.
9. At one time aluminum was more valuable than gold!
10. A 60 watt light bulb can be run for over a day on the amount of energy saved by recycling one pound of
steel. In one year in the United States, the recycling of steel saves enough energy to heat and light
18,000,000 homes.
11. The U.S population discards each year enough aluminum to rebuild the entire U.S. Commercial air fleet
four times over.
Visit /www.recycling-revolution.com/recycling for more information1
Look for our aluminum can recycling bins, help us reduce our waste, money brought in from aluminum will
be put back into the park!

CAMPING TIPS
Most campers drive for hours and plan far in advance for their trips to our beautiful parks and campgrounds.
Some of the reasons for going camping are to get away from it all, and spend time with our families breathing the fresh
air and taking in the natural surroundings. That is why it can be very disappointing to finally arrive at the campground
only to have people at other campsites making your trip hard to enjoy. If we all follow these simple guidelines, everyone
at the park should be able to have a great camping trip.
Tip #1: Do not walk through other campsites, even if it makes it easier to get to washrooms or other park locations.
Walking through another person's campsite is very intrusive and many people will find this offensive.
Tip #2: Keep your pet on a leash at all times. It can be a nuisance to have other pets on your campsite when you are
trying to relax. Even though you may not feel it is a big deal, not everyone wants your dog running through their
campsite.
Tip #3: Pick up after your dog. Nothing spoils a walk more than stepping in dog doo--especially with bare feet. Bring a
scoop or plastic bag to pick up and dispose of it properly. Special bags can be found at pet supply stores. Some camp
stores carry them as well.
Tip #4: Always fully extinguish your campfire when going to sleep or leaving your campsite. Not only is it dangerous
and against most park regulations, but the smoke can become overwhelming when a campfire is not maintained properly.
Tip #5: Be thoughtful when using a radio; observe quiet hours or radio-free zones and take the time to ask if the radio is
too loud for your campsite neighbors.
Tip #6: Minimize noise around the campfire late at night. Although everyone loves sitting around the campfire, if your
group stays up late at night, understand that many other campers are trying to sleep.
Tip #7: Don't leave trash at your campsite. The smell alone will attract unwanted visitors while you sleep or when you
leave your site for a hike. Raccoons or other critters become a nuisance when they find your garbage; they make lots of
noise fighting for food scraps and they drag the trash throughout the park. Take your trash to the park-provided garbage
bin and recycling containers.
Tip #8: Don't wash your dishes at the water fountain or tap. When filling up your water container at the water tap, no
one wants to wait while others wash dishes. It also leaves a mess and an unpleasant odor. Wash dishes on your campsite
and dump any remaining waste water in the waste vault or park-provided location.
Tip #9: Keep your fire under control. Although you may enjoy a bonfire, it can become intrusive and overwhelming to
your campsite neighbors. This may also be against park regulations and can become hard to manage.
Tip #10: Introduce yourself to your campsite neighbors. There is no better way to start off your camping vacation then
with a friendly gesture. Knowing your neighbors helps with campsite security while you are away from your site, and
may come in handy if you need to borrow something.

Stocking programs at Mill Creek
Welcome to your new home!
Muskellunge:
A.k.a. Muskie, the fish of ten thousand casts, a success story on Mill
Creek.
In 1999 the Muskie stocking program was started with an average
annual of 366 - 10” fish added
each year. In the past editions we
have included photos of trophy
fish and this year is no different.
Love them or hate them they are
here to stay and thriving well in
Mill Creek. The Muskie is the
most sought after freshwater trophy
fish in the northern states and has
taken up residency in many Illinois
lakes with the help of the Illinois
Department of Natural Resources.
While many of us will never land a
Muskie of this size (on left) they
can be caught by those that prepare
for the fight of their life. Heavy
equipment and patience are the key
to landing these great trophy fish.
Clint Galloway landed this one, at
48” long and 28lbs, it is a fine example of what is in Mill Creek.
Larger ones have been recorded at
the lake and just maybe the state
record can be surpassed with a fish
from Mill creek, after all, it is only
38 lbs and 8 Oz!
30
Catfish at Mill Creek
As with the Muskie stocking program, the Catfish stocking program
is alive and well at Mill Creek. With an annual stocking program of 4,000
fish, you can almost be guaranteed to catch a catfish if you have anything
left over in your lunch box. That is one of the most wonderful things about
this fish, it is easy to catch and will generally eat anything that you will, no
kidding! While you may catch a couple trying this trick it would be a
much better outing if you were to come prepared with some catfish bait.
Chicken liver, stink bait, worms, cut shad, and even bluegill can be used .
One of the favorite tricks of the Cat fishing experts on Mill Creek lake is to
fish when you can! They can be found deep or shallow, can be caught on a
bobber rig or a drift rig. Just an absolute all-round great fish to take the
kids out to catch. Check with the Gate House for current fishing reports!

HIKING TIPS
What to Bring: A Hiking Checklist
What you take will depend on where you are going and how long you plan to be
away, but any backpack should include the following:
• Candle and matches
• Cell phone
• Compass
• First aid kit
• Food (bring extra)
• Flashlight
• Sunscreen
• Water
• Hat
• Map
• Insect repellent
• Pocket knife
• Nylon filament
• Water purification tablets
• Radio with batteries
• Sunglasses
• Prescription glasses (an extra pair)
• Camera
• Pocket mirror (to use as a signaling device)
• Foil (to use as a cup or signaling device)
• Trash bag (makes an adequate poncho)
• Waterproof matches or matches in a waterproof tin
• Clothing (always bring something warm, extra socks and rain gear)
• Whistle (to scare off animals or to use as a signaling device)
• Space blanket or a piece of plastic (to use for warmth or shelter)
• Prescription medications for ongoing medical conditions
Always allow for bad weather and for the possibility that you may be forced to
spend a night outdoors unexpectedly. It's a good idea to assemble a separate
"survival pack" for each hiker to have at all times. In a small waterproof container, place a pocket knife, compass, whistle, space blanket, nylon filament, water
purification tablets, matches and candle. With these items, the chances of being
able to survive in the wild are greatly improved.

Herschel Vicars Equestrian
Camp and Trails
Located at the south end of the main
park, riders can enjoy a secluded camping and
trail riding experience. Riders may camp at
primitive camp sites within the Equestrian Camp
at the primitive camping rate. Restroom facilities
are located nearby and shower houses are available in the main campground. For 2013, the Bridal fee will be waived; all riders must sign
a trail waiver at the Gate House before riding and pay any camping fees before setting up
camp.
In honor of the dedication, volunteerism and countless hours of labor by Mr.
Vicars in assuring the vital access of Horse Trails and camping area for the use by visitors to the park, this area was dedicated by the Board of Commissioners of the Clark
County Park District in appreciation of his efforts on June 16, 2010.
2013 will see expansion of the Equestrian campground with the addition of water, a shelter, more camp sites, a road and more. This is likely to be the last season for
waived bridal fees with the new additions being added into the Horse camp and gives
riders a great opportunity to explore what is available at a reduced rate.

Honorary Tree Donation Program
Plant a tree with the Clark County Park District! We are excited to invite you to join us to plant a tree to honor a special someone. Families and
Groups are invited to participate. The Donation for the tree planting is $175.00.
With this donation your tree will be logged into the records and your tree will be
guaranteed if it should not thrive. In addition to the tree, you may also want to
do a plaque for the recognition of the individual to the public. Plaques are 9” x
5” and mounted on a concrete block that is installed flush to the ground outside
of the planting area by the tree. The fee for the plaque is $150.00 and can contain 125-150 letters and spaces. This is a tax deductible donation, with the exception of the plaque expense.
There are many ways to donate to the Clark County Park District. We
can help you with any of your donation questions, whether they are monetarily,
in kind of even volunteering your time we will be glad to work with you and explain our endless opportunities to contribute to helping the district to grow and
be enjoyed by all who visit.
Contact Dennis Shiley at 217-889-3901 to find out all of the ways that
you can donate to the Park District!

CAMPFIRE SAFETY
Fire is of prime concern at the campsite. Be sure you have an
area for a fire that cannot spread laterally or vertically. Whenever a
fire is lit at the campsite, be sure that someone is assigned to watch it
at all times. Keep water nearby for emergencies. Be sure that when
you put the fire out you use water and soil and be certain that the fire
is completely out, cool to the touch. Embers buried within the pile of
ashes have a tendency to reignite later. Keep your campsite fires to an
absolute minimum at all times.
Teach your children what to do to prevent forest fires. There
are trees all around your camp site and fires can get out
of control. Keep all fires in designated areas only. You will
find a fire ring at your campsite. Please use it when the
weather permits. You do not want to burn any wood on a
very windy day. Sometimes if it hasn't rained in a while,
there may be a burn ban posted.
That means the ground and surroundings are too
dried out to make a fire. Please follow all campground rules. They are
there for your protection. Always have a way to put out an out of hand
fire. Wind blowing can carry burning debris and create a fire elsewhere.

Ticks and other insects
The area around surrounding Mill Creek Lake does harbor several tick species
and other biting insects. It is important that when you are outdoors that you
wear light colored clothing, use an insect repellant containing DEET and a
hat to protect your head. A complete tick check should be done on a frequent basis. If you do have a tick attached, removal should be done with a
set of tick tweezers or tweezers with a fine point so that the head of the tick
is removed. Please visit the CDC’s website at www.cdc.gov for further information on prevention and signs of infections that ticks may cause.

WATCH THE WEATHER
When planning your activities in the campground and on
the lake be aware of the forecast and be prepared in the event
of a storm. If you are on the lake when a storm arises be ready
to take cover immediately. Always take a phone or radio with
you that you can access the current weather warnings with if
they should arise. In the Park you will find multiple concrete
block structures that are listed as tornado shelters. Take cover
in these shelters as opposed to staying in a camper or vehicle
should a tornado warning be announced.
When present, Park Staff will be around through the
campground before a storm hits in the event of a warning being issued if it is safe for them to be out. In some cases, a
storm may not give us any warning and that is why it is critical
during this time for Campers to stay in touch with the weather
conditions in the area. Our local radio station 105.9 WMMC
does a great job of giving us weather updates in the event of a
storm. If you have access via the web go to WTHI.com, this is
another great place to get up to the minute information on
storms.
We also encourage our users to get connected to weatherbug.com for up to the minute storm information on their
mobile media devices, the local station is at Marshall High
School.
The park staff are here to help you in many ways, however if it is a matter of emergency the first call you should
make is to 911 to activate emergency responders.
