Renewing our
commitment
Built to last:
Renewing our commitment
A message from the CEO
The 2008 book Built to Last by Jim Collins speaks to the necessary steps
an organization must take in order to remain relevant to its consumers,
shareholders and the general public. In our sector, Built to Last might
refer to the interactions we strive to create through our connections in
our communities as well as in our relationships, programs, and program
centres.
I have always thought that an essential pillar of our leadership in the
charitable and not-for-profit sector is our commitment to renewal – as
it will ensure that the YMCA’s legacy of service does not diminish in the
future. In 2011, our Board and staff worked in partnership to lead our
YMCAs in several initiatives that demonstrate our clear and continued
commitment to renewal in our Y communities.
In Chatham-Kent, we saw the culmination of more than a decade’s worth
of work come to fruition in August when the new YMCA of Chatham-Kent
opened. This new state-of-the-art facility replaces a building that had
served as the community’s YMCA since 1947 – and it has been a great
source of pride for Y staff and members alike.
We opened a new YMCA satellite health and wellness branch, the Central
Huron YMCA, at the Clinton Arena and Community Centre in October.
Remarkably, with this newest satellite – the third for our YMCA – our
organization now operates 25% of all municipal-YMCA partnership
facilities in Canada.
Jim Janzen, President & CEO
YMCAs across Southwestern Ontario
In Sarnia, 2011 saw the undertaking of a $2.6M renovation that will convert the Learning and Career Centre from a YMCA
that is predominantly reliant on government funding to one that will be focused on its pursuit of innovative leadership
opportunities, while remaining a welcoming place for adult learners, youth with barriers to employment, and newcomers
to our community. The Leadership Challenge wing, scheduled to open in May 2012, will reinforce our commitment to
leadership development, particularly among youth.
In August, a devastating tornado struck our YMCA community in Goderich. We redeployed resources at our YMCA and
opened it to emergency officials. In order to ensure members of the community had the necessary resources available to
them, we also redirected funds to the municipality.
Our commitment to children and youth called for an expanded response to full day Junior and Senior Kindergarten in
all of our communities in 2011. In response, we opened four new school age and extended day sites across our region
involving all three school boards.
These examples of renewal and our work around building quality, through our programs and life-long relationships,
allows us to deliver on our Brand promise year after year, generation after generation. They are what make the YMCA a
charity that is and always should be; Built to Last.
On behalf of our Board of Directors, I invite you to join us in illustrating the renewal of our commitment to our
communities in 2011.

Commitment to wellness
As Toni Gale looks around the Central Huron YMCA, she knows she’s
looking at a facility that the community of Clinton can be very proud of.
This is a Y that is truly changing lives.
As the Health & Wellness Supervisor, Toni has been working at the Central
Huron YMCA since it opened at the Central Huron Community Complex in
October 2011.
Already, Toni and the facility’s three part-time employees have seen how
this Y is a great example of the adage: if you build it, they will come. It
has exceeded membership targets beyond expectations. The Central
Huron YMCA’s state-of-the-art equipment, exceptional programming,
and interactive gaming Energy Zone have all attributed to its immense
popularity with children, youth, and adults alike.
But the success seen in Clinton isn’t just about the number of members the
facility has been able to attract to date. More importantly is the fact that,
in just a few short months, staff are already seeing concrete results of how
the Central Huron YMCA reflects the Y’s long-standing commitment to
overall health and wellness.
One of the most engaging stories is of a woman who was diagnosed
with stage three breast cancer nine years ago, at the age of 33. After
going through chemotherapy, radiation, and surgeries, she gained 40
lbs from the recovery medications. Since then, though now cancer-free,
she has struggled to lose the weight. That is, until the Central Huron
YMCA opened. A little timid in the beginning, she purchased a 10-visit
pass, unsure if she had the time to fully commit to an ongoing exercise
program. She started slowly and, with mentorship from the Y’s staff, she
now exercises three to four times a week. Fit, happy and on the road to her
ultimate fitness goals, she serves as an inspiration to everyone who knows
her personal journey.
And the stories of personal change don’t stop there. They include a
parent and her teenage daughter who now are spending time together
by coming into the Y to exercise. There’s a local businessman who is
committed to making the time to exercise – shedding 20 pounds in the
process. And there are many members in their 40s who have begun
physical activity for the first time in their lives.
Toni Gale, Health & Wellness Supervisor
Central Huron YMCA
“Our passion is helping people
feel good about themselves and
ensuring our members really
enjoy their time here.
We help them create a personal
health program that works for
them and helps achieve their
long-term goals for their own
wellbeing.” – Toni
Toni says there’s no secret to her team’s great rapport with their members.
They ensure they support, encourage, and motivate members to reach
their personal health goals, whatever they may be. For some that means
significant weight loss, while for others it’s just trying to feel fit again.

Commitment to community
In December 2011, students from the Sarnia Y’s LINC (Language Instruction for
Newcomers) and ESL (English as a Second Language) programs piled into a
bus. They carried signs celebrating their native countries and expressing their
excitement at being in Canada.
What happened next was a true surprise. You see, the students were
participating in the Sarnia Kinsman Parade of Lights. For many, it was the
first time they’d ever seen such an event, let alone participated in one. But as
they set off on the parade route there was an amazing response. The Sarnia
residents watching applauded and cheered them and shouted, “Welcome to
Canada!” in support.
“That experience made our students so proud to be in Canada and it fed their
desire to become more involved with local events in their community,” says
Milka Stupar, an ESL/LINC instructor at the YMCA Learning and Career Centre.
The Sarnia Y has run the LINC and ESL programs for many years. Both
programs emphasize the development of communication skills including
listening, speaking, reading, writing and computer literacy – which are all
taught in relation to Canadian culture. To help students reach their personal,
professional, and academic goals, instructors help them identify their longand short-term expectations as well as their learning style. Together, they
build strategies to help ensure the students’ needs are met.
Integration into the community is one of the cornerstones of the Y’s curriculum
for LINC and ESL and can be a big contributor to student success.
In 2011, one of the ways the Y hoped to increase students’ connections
with the greater Sarnia community was to hold an open house during ESL
Week. The event was intended to introduce Sarnia residents to the YMCA’s
ESL and LINC programs, students and teachers. Milka recalls a moment
during the open house that she will never forget. Many of the students
had created displays and took on the role of cultural ambassador for their
country of origin. As they talked with Sarnia natives, their excitement and
pride flourished after they realized they had the English skills to share a
conversation with people outside their school.
Milka says the success of that event is what encouraged the students to
increase their involvement with the community. The Friday Afternoon Speaker
and Workshop Series is one of the great ways that this is accomplished. It
was designed to help the students to engage with local activists, artists, and
community leaders.
Attendees come from all corners of the community and have included Bryan
and Shannon Prince, who spoke about the Underground Railroad during Black
History Month; Greg Laviolette, an Urban Farmer and activist who spoke about
urban food sustainability; and Anna Miccolis, a local stained-glass artist who
has been invited to create a work of art in collaboration with students.
Milka Stupar, ESL/LINC Instructor
YMCA Learning and Career Centre
“For many of the students, it was
the first time they shared a room
with a politician.
The experience reinforced the
rights and freedoms they have
in Canada and the fact that they
have a voice in their new country.
It is a moment that can change
lives.” – Milka
One special moment for the program occurred during the most recent Provincial election. All of the local candidates were invited
to speak – and they accepted the offer.
“For many of the students, it was the first time they shared a room with a politician,” says Milka. “The experience reinforced
the rights and freedoms they have in Canada and the fact that they have a voice in their new country. It is a moment that can
change lives. “

Commitment to the future
Dave Welton has truly been a member of the Y his whole life. In fact, his
family’s history is so richly integrated with the YMCA that Dave is well known
for his passion and support of the Y’s values.
Dave was introduced to the YMCA at a very early age – at birth. When
Dave was born, in Saint John, New Brunswick, his father, Lloyd, was
already established as an executive with the YMCA. And over the years,
the family moved – from Saint John to Kitchener to Buffalo to Westmount
(the Montreal suburb), Stratford and to Chatham – to follow his father’s
illustrious career.
“A big constant for their family through all the moves was the presence of
the Y,” says Dave. “We try to support it every way we can – whether it’s time,
money or as unofficial ambassadors.”
Lloyd even served as the CEO of the Chatham YMCA in the 1970s and then
went on to work for Campaign Associates, the fundraising arm of the Y.
And while his dad was promoting the Y and helping lead major fundraising
campaigns, Dave himself was at the Y learning to swim and enjoying
summer camps as a child – and then becoming a lifeguard and a camp
leader in his teenage years. His involvement with the Y continued during
university and long afterward, when he served as a member of the Board of
Directors in Chatham-Kent as well as assisted in fundraising efforts.
In fact, at every stage in his life, Dave has found a place at the Y. And the
passion that both Dave and his father, Lloyd, have for the YMCA is being
carried on. Today, Dave’s grandchildren visit the YMCA of Chatham-Kent
with him, where they play basketball in the state-of-the art-gym or swim in
the facility’s exceptional pools. And they experience first-hand why their
grandfather and great-grandfather still believe in the Y’s vision so much.
“Our family has had a life-long love affair with the YMCA and the value of
affordability for everyone that it stands for,” says Dave. “This is a fun place to
be and it’s an important place for our entire community.”
In his grandchildren and in the Chatham-Kent Y, Dave sees the future. The
YMCA of Chatham-Kent is a landmark facility, not just for Y members, but the
entire community. From health and wellness to outstanding programming,
it’s a place that ensures that no person, especially youth, will be denied the
opportunity to participate in its programs due to financial constraints.
Dave Welton, life-time member,
Chatham-Kent YMCA
“As a former Y executive,
my father could clearly see
that the YMCA is not just a
building, it is a legacy for our
community.” – Dave
And how does his father still feel about the Y all these years later? Well, Lloyd, now living in a nursing home, made a special
visit to the YMCA of Chatham-Kent when the facility first opened in June 2011. He spent time with the current CEO of the
YMCAs Across Southwestern Ontario, Jim Janzen, as they toured the entire facility together. “He was thrilled with where the
Y in Chatham-Kent is going,” says Dave. “As a former Y executive he could clearly see that this is not just a building, it is a
legacy for our community.”

Commitment to learning
A three-year-old girl runs at full speed around the outdoor play area at the
YMCA Child Development Centre in Corunna. Laughing with her friends
and showing her teachers how high she can jump, you would never know
that just over a year ago there was concern over whether she would reach
this stage.
When she was in the Infant Room, the same little girl was still struggling to
walk at 18 months. Thankfully for her family, the staff at the Y recognized
that there were issues and cared enough to work with them. Staff brought
in outside help as well as provided the child with the support needed to
help her thrive.
Even at such a young age, the Y truly changed her life. That little girl’s
story is just one of many stories that Heather Forbes, Supervisor of Child
Development, can tell about her staff and the quality of childcare they
provide at the two YMCA locations in Corunna.
The larger of the two facilities opened in January 2007 and is attached
to St. Joseph’s Catholic School. With 13 staff, the location has space for
infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and JK/SK children.
The second facility, which opened in September 2011, is attached to
Colonel Cameron Public School and has expanded with the advent of
full day kindergarten. YMCA staff at Colonel Cameron use the YMCA’s
renowned Playing to Learn approach to make the before-and-after school
program an enjoyable extension of the school day. The same will hold true
when full day kindergarten comes to St. Joe’s in September 2012.
In fact, the Playing to Learn curriculum is used at all YMCA-run child care
centres across Canada. Aligning with primary school benchmarks, it
uses creative play as a foundation for language and literacy, music and
movement, math, science, gross motor, visual arts, and dramatic play.
“The staff take cues from the children,” says Heather. “When the
preschoolers showed interest in planes after seeing them in the sky, the
teacher arranged a trip to the airport to show them a real plane. They also
incorporated books, songs, and activities about planes into the curriculum.”
During March Break, Y staff took Playing to Learn to a whole new
level with the school-age children. They went for a walk every day to
explore their community. One day they went to the local bank and even
entered the vault. Another day they explored the Fire Hall and sat in a
fire engine, and they also visited the grocery store to get a ‘behind the
shopping cart’ experience.

Heather Forbes, Supervisor of Child
Development, YMCA Childcare, Corunna
“We strive on a daily basis
to be there for the children
and their parents. We work
together to create a quality
program within a nurturing
environment. By guiding
children through all stages of
development, we ensure their
social, emotional and physical
needs are met.” – Heather

Community participation
By offering programs and services that are customized to each YMCA community’s needs, membership in the YMCAs
across Southwestern Ontario continues to be strong. In accordance with the Y’s mandate of affordability for all,
approximately 13% of our membership is provided assistance in some measure – whether it is for camps, child care,
monthly membership fees or programs.

Community events
The Y is proud to be a community anchor, a special place where children,
families and seniors can come together to learn and grow. But we also
reach out and participate fully with many community events – events
that bridge the gaps between all ages, cultures and circumstances.
Diversity and inclusion are very important tenets of our mission and
each year our members and staff join in celebrations that recognize the
cultural mosaic that is present in our communities and our world. That’s
why we lead special activities to coincide with World Health Day, Family
Day, and International Peace Week.
At each of our Ys throughout 2011, the community was a tremendous
support to our efforts. Not only were our annual golf tournaments soldout, but our Swim-Run-Bike Triathlon gave children and adults a chance
to challenge themselves and have fun together while raising much
needed funds. We celebrated youth through an awards evening, and we
also held an International Bridge Race 10K Run that attracted more than
800 Canadian and American runners.
As the Y seeks to educate and engage our local communities in these
and many other ways, we bring Y members together in a spirit of
friendship and greater purpose. The Y strengthens our connections with
each other and helps us build new links as we reach out to children and
adults across our communities.

In the community
At the YMCAs across Southwestern Ontario, we believe that all children should have access to our quality programming,
services and facilities – regardless of their families’ ability to pay. The strength of our donor base is critical to ensuring
that this mandate continues to be met through our annual Strong Kids Campaign.

A two-year-old girl attends daycare while her single mom goes to
work each morning relieved that she can feel confident her only
child is being well cared for.
A 55-year-old man, on the road to recovery following a heart
attack, begins to exercise for the first time in his life and loses 20 lbs
in the process.
A 36-year-old woman, who is new to Canada, learns the necessary
language and cultural skills required to land her first job in Canada.
Whether it’s Sarnia-Lambton, Chatham-Kent, Goderich-Huron,
Clinton or North Middlesex, there are countless examples of how the
Y is changing lives. Each and every day, the Y touches so many lives
in all of our communities.
Donations to the YMCA ensure that we can do this necessary work.
We are thankful for the many generous business leaders, partners
and individuals who donate to our capital campaigns, Strong Kids
Campaign, renewal projects, and program development. Together
we are making sure that the YMCAs across Southwestern Ontario
continue their commitment to their communities.
