Welcome
‘
Coming to Lecce
as a student can
open up a whole
new world, full of
unique opportunities,
memorable moments
and life-changing
experiences.
It can also be a challenge trying to
understand how the Italian education
system works, learning how Italian people
interact and communicate with each
other, and adapting to life in Italy whilst
away from family, friends and familiar
surroundings.
The International team is made up of
multi-lingual staff, many of whom have
experience of living and studying abroad.
Based in the International Building, our
job is to make sure that your time at the
Università del Salento is as problem free
as possible. It is our intention to support
you throughout your time here.
On behalf of my team I look forward to
welcoming you to Lecce!

The Good Life
Lecce is a relatively small city, only a few kilometers
from the most beautiful and unspoiled beaches of
Italy. It will only take you half an hour to leave class
and be at the beach. Lecce hosts many festivals and
events throughout the year to keep you busy. The
most famous are our big three: the Festival of Cinema,
attracting the world’s top directors and actors; the
festival of St. Orontius, and the “Notte della Taranta”
a huge music festival held at the end of summer in
Melpignano.
The Student Center
The Student Center is a center completely managed by exstudents of the Università del Salento. Here you can meet
other students and have a cup of coffee, you can study,
search the web, or check your email. The Student Center
organizes parties, conferences and events throughout the
year. At the Student Center there is the University shop,
where you can buy gadgets and books.
Studying in Lecce was an amazing experience! Everybody at
CLA was extremely nice and knowledgeable and I would do
it over again if I had a chance! Classes were meaningful and
fun! All the extracurricular activities and the trips we took
were very helpful in getting a deeper understanding of not
only the Italian language but also the culture.

Lecce, the “Florence of the South”
Lecce is a historic city of 95,200 inhabitants in Apulia, the second province in the region by population,
as well as the one of the most important cities of Apulia. After the Norman conquest in the 11th century,
Lecce regained commercial importance, flourishing in the subsequent Hohenstaufen and Angevin rule
and was one of the largest and most important fiefs of the Kingdom of Sicily from 1053 to1463, when it
was annexed directly to the crown. From the 15th century, Lecce was one of the most important cities
of southern Italy, and, starting in 1630, it was enriched with precious Baroque monuments.
Because of the rich Baroque architectural monuments found in the city, Lecce is commonly nicknamed
the "The Florence of the South". A magnificent jewel of baroque architecture, constructed in yellow
stone and marvellously preserved. Carved from golden sandstone the exuberant architecture looks like
a sumptuous theatrical set.

The nightlife
Since 1998 there has been a summer La Notte della
Taranta (taranta night), consisting of a whole night
where many famous musicians alternating their
performances with pizzica orchestras. Some of these
include Stewart Copeland, Franco Battiato, Gianna
Nannini, Raiz, Lucio Dalla, and Carmen Consoli.
Festivals
Every town and village has a yearly festa, so in
summer there’s a choice of several to attend
every night. Check listings magazine QuiSalento
(online at quisalento.it) or the local bar or tourist
office for dates.
Many involve old religious rites, like the carrying
of a Virgin Mary statue around Lecce (August
24-6) or into the sea at Otranto (September 6).
Others, like Novoli have bonfires and spectacular
fireworks (January 16-17).
Almost all will include the pizzica , a fast and
compelling rhythmic dance done to the accompaniment of the tambourine, accordion and violin.
The atmosphere is pulsing, whether it’s a modest village festa or the August event in Melpignano,
which has international guest stars and attracts audiences of 15,000.
Thousands of lights and torches create a carnival atmosphere. The pizzica band will start playing at
11pm and when the whole shebang gets going, you’d be pushed to match the spacey atmosphere at any
nightclub.
This might be explained by pizzica’s origins: though once associated with dancing out the poison of a
spider-bite, the pizzica actually arrived in Salento from ancient Greece, its function being therapeutic.

requirement.
Schengen uniform visa for short stays not exceeding
90 days
The uniform visa issued by a Schengen State authorizes
entry for short stay in or transit through the Schengen
area for a period not exceeding 90 days.
If you hold a residence permit issued by a Schengen
State you are entitled to enter Italy without a visa for
a short stay not exceeding 3 months on grounds other
than employment, self-employment and training. In
this case too, you have to report on arrival.

shown whenever requested by Police.
If they fail to comply with the obligation to report

exceeding 3 months.

MEDICAL ASSISTANCE
If you are a national from either a EU Member State
or an EEA country or you are of Swiss nationality,

European Health Insurance Card (or EHIC) allows to
receive medical treatment in another member state
for free, or at a reduced cost.
A patient contribution is required for prescriptions,
medical examinations, oral and dental care.
Non-EU Students: must take out an international
Health Insurance which covers costs related to
medical treatment and admission to hospital. This
kind of insurance costs about 60 EUR for a period of
6 months and 120 EUR for a period of 12 months.
Nevertheless, in order to avoid problems it is

An insurance policy is compulsory if you apply for a

To obtain the issue of a residence permit you need:

ITALIAN UNIVERSITY SYSTEM
The reform of the Italian University System (Ministerial Decree no. 509/99) has led to some important
innovations in the organization of academic degrees, implementing the decisions taken by EU Ministers
in Bologna in 1998.
The new system can be illustrated as follows:
The first cycle (Laurea) has a 3-year duration for a total of 180 ECTS (European Credit Transfer and
Accumulation System). It leads to a Bachelor of Science equivalent degree (UK);
The second cycle (Laurea Specialistica/Laurea Magistrale) has a 2-year duration for a total of 120 ECTS. It
leads to a Master of Science equivalent degree (UK);
The third cycle (Dottorato - Phd) has a 3-year duration for a total of 180 ECTS. It leads to a PhD
equivalent;
On top of the first cycle, the Italian system provides a 1-year course (minimum of 60 ECTS) leading to a 1
st level Specializing Master;
On top of the second cycle, the Italian system provides a 1-year course (minimum of 60 ECTS) leading to
a 2nd level Specializing Master.

If you require academic recognition of the study period spent abroad or of your foreign degree, you have to
follow a specific procedure. It is possible to obtain recognition in order to enrol in university programs, to continue
university studies and to obtain an Italian degree.
These competences are attributed to individual universities, according to the Legge 11 luglio 2002, n. 148 di Ratifica
ed esecuzione della Convenzione di Lisbona dell’11 aprile 1997 .
The recognition of a foreign academic degree is not immediate.
Academic Courses

Italian academic authorities carry out the evaluation of degrees obtained abroad within the framework of
university autonomy; they decide case by case if they can confer total or partial recognition.
If you apply for recognition of your degree at Università del Salento, a specific Commission will evaluate your
previous career. You can obtain the full recognition of your academic degree and in this case you will receive the
“certificato di equipollenza”.
Otherwise you can be required to integrate your curriculum with some exams. As a consequence, you must enrol
with “abbreviazione di corso”, that means attend some courses, pass the related exams and discuss your final
project.

Teaching at The Scuola di Italiano per
Stranieri (SIS) gives me the invaluable
privilege to be part of students’ lives. As
a teacher, I love inspiring the students
with the desire to learn, and I love the
incomparable challenge of guiding them
to potential success.
It is a meaningfully influencing experience.
Before starting my classes, I know what
I am going to teach but I never know
what I will be taught by my students.
Each of them makes me proud and I feel
amazingly rewarded from the cultural,
personal and instructional point of
view. That is why I dare to define it a
tridimentional experience that fills my life
with new learning opportunities every day
and gives me invaluable privileges.

analyzed in terms of vocabulary, grammar and of the linguistic
functions it raises.
Courses are organized for a minimum of 6 students.

Our extracurricular activities

of an Italian family. Classes are held
once a week and you’ll learn how to
cook a complete Italian meal. The

from used, discarded and recovered
objects and materials. In this course,
you create projects with found materials
using a wide variety of approaches and
methods, including collage, assemblage,

Papier-mâché course
Paper mache has a long tradition in Lecce
where you can find a number of ateliers.
Classes of paper mache are held at one of
these ateliers where the paper-mache artist
will teach you how to use simple ingredients
like water, glue and paper to create a statue
or any object you may like. The material is

Lecce is truly the perfect city for a study abroad experience in
Italy. As a foreigner, Lecce is completely manageable without
being too similar to one’s life at home. The people here tend to
be quite kind and understanding and the city is small enough in
size to afford one a feeling of familiarity with the city after a
short time. Granted , this comes with the associated challenges
of at times feeling too small and a bit confining, but on the
whole it is really quite the perfect size to minimize any feeling
of culture shock for a foreigner. Another quite notable and
likeable aspect of Lecce is its affordability:in a country that tends
to be rather expensive , the cost of life here allows one to enjoy
the best aspects of Italian culture without having to constantly
worry about financial matters. All of this things contribute to my
complete satisfaction with Leccesi: non voglio andare via!

Pottery course
Our pottery course covers
all the basic techniques
and gives students the
opportunity to work with
a full palette of clays.
Surface decoration is
emphasised in our new
courses, which introduce
a whole range of new
techniques.
Acting course
Courses in acting are of a practical nature. Acting lessons give
the student many skills, which can give you confidence and
offer you another chance to test your Italian and improve your
pronunciation with professional actors.
Stone carving course
Local stone is a soft stone that can be
easily carved and worked into a variety
of shapes. Stone carving classes are
held at a famous artist’s atelier in
the historical downtown of Lecce. In
four weeks you’ll be able to realize
a sculpture of your choice, which is
included in the course fee together
with the carving material.
Excursions
Painting on ceramics
course
If you choose this course
you will learn how to paint
on ceramics and be able
to decorate items like
cups, bowls and plates.
The decorated objects and
the painting materials are
included in the fees.
Excursions will cover the entire Salento area. In particular, trips to Otranto, Gallipoli, Galatina,
Tricase are part of the program.
Ask [email protected] for the program.
I feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to study at the
Scuola d’Italiano per Stranieri. The Scuola is notable not only from
an instructional aspect, but it exceeds the standards of any study
abroad program. The staff fosters an environment of learning
in all facets: within the classroom, on cultural excursions, and
through classes with local artisans. I attended the Scuola for the
first time in 2005 and returned as a program director in 2009,
and I was happy to see that the program was making consistent
improvements while maintaining its basic values and benefits
offered to the students. I would highly recommend this program to
any student who hopes to leave Italy not only with a knowledge of
the language, but a great appreciation and understanding for the
rich culture that the bel paese has to offer.

My experience in Lecce could not have
been more perfect. The language
courses, conducted in daily grammar and
conversation sessions, were both fun and
rigorous. I learned a great deal from the
instructors, who remain my friends to this
day, as do my fellow students with whom
I enjoyed countless hours on the beautiful
beaches of Salento. I am so grateful to the
Università del Salento for providing this
opportunity to students of Italian, and I
cannot wait for my chance to return to Lecce
one day!

at the University of Mississippi

language skills, and the
teaching staff was always

help or answer my questions.I
would recommend any
student to come to the Scuola

amazing area and it just must change your
life forever!
