If you are like me however, after 5 or 6 songs, you are ready to move onto something else. After all, variety is the spice of life! There is an Irish band from the Philly area that has taken that into consideration and decided to mix Rock, Reggae, Pop and other styles with Irish tradition – and that band is Jamison. When it comes to Irish music in this town, we all know that Jamison is one of the most beloved bands that come to mind. Apparently, this is not just a local love affair. Jamison entered an online Battle of the Bands contest, sponsored by the Strangford Lough Beer Company and won the title of Best Irish Band as voted by people all over the world. I spoke to Lead Vocalist and Guitar player, Frank Daly who explained “this was an international competition. Irish bands from all over the world sent in videos that were narrowed down to the best 30 and were then posted online for people to vote on”. Jamison came through on top and to celebrate, they to perform at McFadden’s in the Rio Hotel! Congrats to the band from The OOT and all its readers – this truly is a great accomplishment! Great accomplishments are not new to Jamison, though. They have appeared on Fox Good Day Philadelphia’s promotion of the 2005 Penn’s Landing Irish Festival, they were also the Headline band for the Phoenix- ville Concert Series, The Philadelphia Saint Patrick’s Day Parade, Cape May County’s Irish Fall Festival (Wildwood NJ), the Delmarva Saint Patrick’s Day Celebration, and Philadelphia’s Running of the Santa’s, just to name a few. Jamison has had songs featured on Midwest Radio in Ireland and they were awarded “Best Band” in 2009 by the Mt Holly St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee. More locally, playing venues including The Electric Factory, Citizens Bank Park, and many festivals. Some of the smaller, more intimate venues you can see them play are Kildare’s, Brittingham’s, Paddy Whacks, and Finnigan’s Wake. Jamison is a group of guys who wanted to perform Irish music with a twist. As Frank told me, “there are lots of Irish bands doing cover music, but not many Rock bands who do Irish music.” They perform a high energy show that mixes various types of song styles yet they never stray from their Irish roots. When you go to see Jamison, be prepared to dance from "# of our shows!” The members of Jamison are Frank Daly - Guitar, Mandolin, Tin Whistle and Lead Vocals; John O’Callaghan – Guitar, Tin Whistle, Banjo and Lead Vocals; Sean Callaghan – Drums and Percussion; Dave Lynd - Bass Guitar, Moog Pedals and Backup Vocals and C.J. Mills – Fiddle, Mandolin and $# the band and view their schedule by visiting their website at www.jamisoncelticrock.com. On St. Patrick’s Day, Jamison will be appearing at Brittingham’s Irish Pub & Restaurant in Whitemarsh, PA during the day and then they will be at Kildare’s in West Chester from 9 pm – 1 am. can be appreciated all year long, not just this time of the year. If you are looking for a night of dancing to high energy cover songs with a mash-up of Irish and other styles, go check them # % shirt though! 9ROXPH1XPEHU0DUFKWR0DUFKZZw.OOTONLINE.com Page 5 Page 6 9ROXPH1XPEHU0DUFKWR0DUFKZZw.OOTONLINE.com 9ROXPH1XPEHU0DUFKWR0DUFKZZw.OOTONLINE.com THE ERIN EXPRESS and SHAMROCK SHUTTLES Photos by Mike Vagnoni March 12th Gallagher Brothers Live '*+44#78 For the Spirit of the Season the annual Bus Loops / Shuttles will make the rounds at selected area locations ( See this issue for all the locations on the route) Get ready for the Shamrock Shuttle on March St Pattys Day 5th and the Erin Celtic Connection Express Saturday Irish Dancers March 12th... Each year Ireland by John J. Ruppert With Saint Patrick’s Day upon us talk always turns to the folklore behind The Blarney Stone. There has been as many stories behind it’s origin as there has been in it’s meaning. One thing is certain, The Blarney Stone is one of the world’s most celebrated tourists attractions welcoming millions of visitors and their puckered up lips. One of the more popular legends tells of rewarding each kisser with the gift of @ Q- bares witness to all those who have come in search of such rewards or other powers The Blarney Stone may have to offer. The Blarney Stone is located in the village of Blarney in Ireland. It is a block of bluestone that’s been built right into the battlements of Blarney Castle. To kiss the stone one must sit with their back towards the stone while someone else holds your Q# must lean far backward and downward into the abyss while grabbing the iron rails, you lower yourself until your head is even with the stone enough to kiss it. So the next time someone asks you if you know about The Blarney Stone you can say yes... but do you really know? The only way to to the village of Blarney and see it for yourself face to face or in this case Stone to Lips. 9ROXPH1XPEHU0DUFKWR0DUFKZZw.OOTONLINE.com Page 11 Page 12 9ROXPH1XPEHU0DUFKWR0DUFKZZw.OOTONLINE.com LOVEFEST is back for 2011! Every bar, club and restaurant is offering some sort of event or specials that you can enjoy. But if you are looking for more than just your average drinking occasion, a true and authentic Irish experience awaits you at Kildare’s. It all started back in 2003 with the Kildare’s West Chester location. Proprietor, Dr. Dave Magrogan had the idea to create an atmosphere for his patrons that would let them experience a real Irish Pub. That idea has turned into an extremely successful reality, now with 7 locations in the US! All of Kildare’s Pubs have incredible architectural interiors and state-of-the-art bar & beer systems. I spoke with Director of marketing, Frank Daly who explained “we take a great deal of care into giving our customers a true Irish experience. Everything you see from the chairs, tables and bars to the art on the walls is shipped right from Ireland. We have a huge warehouse of all sorts of items that each owner can and neighbors for cheerful hours of drinking, storytelling, conversations and music. Finally, the “Brew Pub” is homage to the Guinness Brewery. Kildare’s certainly offers great options for drinking but it’s the food that is the main attraction. Kildare’s dishes are distinctly and authentically Irish while keeping American preferences in mind. The food is prepared fresh – nothing frozen. Kildare’s chefs have been training with the best in Ireland and now they are excited to be able to offer the freshest authentic Irish cuisines at all locations. A few of the staple appetizers are the BFG wings that are baked, fried & grilled with a tangy Jameson glaze and served with Bleu Cheese, celery and carrots. The Irish Craic Nachos (Craic is Irish for “Fun”) are actually house-made Potato chips topped with melted cheese, guacamole, salsa and sour cream and have the option to be served with pulled pork, chicken or seasoned beef. Another Kildare’s favorite are the Boxtys - a traditional dish, common in the Irish they are more than just places to drink – they are social experiences. countryside, made from a potato As you walk through the entrance pancake that is rolled and stuffed Q of Kildare’s you will experience Ireland’s “Shop Pubs”, which can be found in somewhat rural areas of Ireland. This is where a lad or lass can purchase various items such as medicine, stamps and every day essentials in addition to a nice, refreshing pint of beer. As you pass through the Shop Pub, you will then enter the “Victorian Pub”, which is more of an upscale-type of pub that would be found in the capital city of Dublin where literary scholars would take refuge. The “Gaelic” is a tribute to Old World Pagan Ireland, with hand-hewn wooden log chairs and beautiful Celtic murals. The Pub, which in Ireland will be found in more remote areas, is an extension of the home. These guys were amazing. The musicianship was excellent and the stage show was fantastic. These guys were hands down one of the best tribute bands I’ve ever witnessed. On top of being great musicians, they had amazing vocals and harmonies. The band consists of Mr. George Rumbol as Bowie, Rod Margolis on guitar, Marc Evans on bass, Jack Kelly on keys, and Chris Nerone on drums. I saw George perform a few months ago at the TLA with his band the Dead End Kids, which is another legendary band, so I kind of knew this band would be top notch as well. I wasn’t disappointed. The show was authentic and everyone was really blown away. I couldn’t get over how awesome George was in particular. He really did an amazing job. I think even Bowie himself would have been impressed. I would mend seeing this band! 9ROXPH1XPEHU0DUFKWR0DUFKZZw.OOTONLINE.com without Donny’s Joke Corner hesitation.
