Individuals and groups came from all over the island to help out with whatever was the task of the day. With their efforts and hard work, we were able to complete building six houses in 2008 including the Akahi family‟s house in the Waiohuli Subdivision in Kula. In 2009, the first house to be completed in the Waiehu Kou IV Subdivision was the Kaalakea-Rust family‟s house moving them directly out of homelessness into a home of their own. The partner families must have the flexibility and willingness to do whatever it takes and the patience to work with various individuals and volunteer groups to get the job done. With their partnership and sweat equity, we are able to fulfill our mission of „building simple, decent homes for people in need‟. Commitment is the key to success. ReStore Clerk Board of Directors Dean Duque President Mark Moser Vice President Gwen Hiraga Secretary Alan Sakuma Treasurer Darryl Banks Jack Fisher Clarice Holmes John Jaskula Charlene Ka’uhane Frank Pikrone Giovanni Rosati Mike Takamatsu Kalani Wong Mei-Lee Wong Deborah Wright Mahalo to the 20 students from the University of California in Berkeley, Habitat for Humanity‟s Collegiate Challenge program, lead by Beth Dukes, for their courage in taking the challenge during their school break to help Habitat for Humanity-Maui build 13 homes. These generous volunteers taped and mud dry wall, painted, caulked, and put in the finishing touches for a House Blessing. They were also able to assist at the ReStore, E-cycling and the Warehouse. Iao Congregational Church provided their spacious lodging; Aloha Mixed Plate, St. Rita‟s Church, Steve Criss, Kahu Kalani Wong, Ewalani Shim and Irene Neal provided their delicious meals; DLNR Judy Edwards for her informative talk at Ahihi Kinau Reserve; and Betsill Brothers Construction for ice. Special kudos to Executive Director Sherri Dodson for accepting this partnership and for fixing her famous chili and to Board Member Mike Takamatsu for securing lodging. To learn how you can help to build simple and decent homes, contact us at 893-0334 or www.habitat-maui.org. A Belated Happy New Year! Or so we hope it is. As excited as we are about the possibilities that lie ahead for Habitat for Humanity Maui we are also moving forward with caution. We are fortunate that we had a great year at our ReStore and had some great individual donations in calendar year 2008. We also added another successful fundraiser, the Tommy Bahama Golf Tournament last year. This has enabled us to continue without any interruption until at least the end of this fiscal year. We know that all the analysts are saying that 2009/2010 will be much worse than the last year. With that in mind we are stretching our pennies and making every dollar count. We are confident that our donors will realize that the need for adequate shelter has only increased during these hard economic times. Last year we put six families in simple decent homes. This year, we have already moved four families into simple decent homes. We will finish at least another 10 homes by the end of 2009. This will bring our total homes completed since 2003 to 30! As I mentioned we are so excited to be partnering with Tommy Bahamas in their Annual Golf Tournament. Not only we did we make a lot of money but we also had a wonderful time. I learned all I ever wanted to know about golf and have decided that golf isn‟t that bad. We look forward to many more years of partnering with this wonderful company. As I look back on the last year I realize that all our successes are because of the wonderful support of all our volunteers. It constantly amazes me how generous our community is with their time. We have also met wonderful volunteers who while on their vacations want to give of themselves to our community. Much mahalo to all of you! A Warm Mahalo! by Mike Takamatsu (Board of Directors, Habitat for Humanity Maui) Garrett Ross, Sunni Lau, and Sol Kaimimoku joined the Habitat for Humanity Maui‟s volunteer work force during the completion stage of Catarina & Mike Akahi‟s home in the Waiohuli Subdivision in Kula. Needless to say, Jim Briske (Project Manager) and I were impressed by their willingness to help and accomplish a large volume of quality work. Garrett is a very quiet, modest individual and goes about his tasks with little fanfare. He is a professional roofer by trade and has operated his own business for over twelve years. He is very skilled in other work such as dry wall installation, texturing, painting, laminate flooring, and even ceramic tile setting. He is truly a “Master of Trade” in this business. Garrett Ross & Sunni Lau are two of the “Terrific Trio” helping out at Waiehu Kou IV. This photo was taken at Elaine Needham‟s House Blessing on March 7, 2009. Garrett exemplifies the meaning of “kokua” for he and his team are at the Waiehu Kou IV job site whenever he is not at a paying job site, often working late into the evening. Since his arrival at the Waiehu Kou IV job site in early January, he has been the pace setter in completing six of the homes during the first quarter of 2009. He has been a wonderful asset to this organization and we are truly blessed by his generosity and skills. Much mahalo to Garrett, Sunni, and Sol. Keep up the good work! “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” Matthew 5:16 Tommy Bahama Golf Tournament Fundraiser Event 2009 Monopoly Tournament Date To Be Announced Mr. Hammer Contest Saturday, August 1st 2009 Build-a-Thon Saturday, August 15th 2009 Tommy Bahama Golf Tournament Monday, Oct. 5th Habitat for Humanity Maui was the beneficiary of the 2008 Tommy Bahama Golf Tournament held on October 4, 2008. It began with a pre-registration dinner at Tommy Bahamas Restaurant in the Wailea Shopping Village the night before. Golfers could pre-register and have drinks and pupu while enjoying entertainment. The Golf Tournament opened up with a continental breakfast of coffee, pastries, and fruit served with the sound of Irish music playing in the background. A blessing by Kahu Kimokea Kapahulehua and his hula halau was held and approximately 140 golfers headed out to the course to play for the Hole-In -One BIG PRIZE: a brand new 2008 BMW X3 3.0si and a 2008 Harley Davidson Motorcycle! Many thanks to BMW of Maui and Harley Davidson for donating the grand prizes. The golfers enjoyed this historically fun course with all of its unique characteristics and they even learned a lot about Habitat for Humanity by the tee signs posted at every tee which gave fun factual trivia information about the organization like “Did you know that Habitat for Humanity has housed over 1 million people in over 70 countries?” Lunch was provided under a tent set up on the lawn near the Matteo‟s Restaurant side of the course - compliments of Tommy Bahama‟s Restaurant. The staff cooked chicken, burgers, and hot dogs on site and served it up with old fashioned Maui potato chips, salad, and cold drinks. The day ended with an awards banquet dinner at the restaurant combined with a live auction hosted by the late “Uncle Boy” Kanae of KPOA radio station. A silent auction was held packed full of prizes including inter-island travel aboard the Hawaii Superferry, rounds of golf at the Makena Golf Course, dinner for two at the Hakone Restaurant in the Maui Prince Hotel, a VIP Menu Sampling at the Sansei Seafood Restaurant, Gift Certificates from Haliimaile General Store, Ruth‟s Chris Steak House, Leilani‟s On The Beach, and more with the smooth sounds of „Nuf Sed‟ wafting through the air. Congratulations to the winners. All in all, it was a great time and brought in over $45,000.00 to benefit Habitat for Humanity Maui. We can‟t say thank you enough to General Manager Beau Moore and his team at Tommy Bahamas—Great Job! Kahu Kapahulehua’s hula halau opens with a Blessing on the Course. One of the grand prizes was a 2008 Harley Davidson Motorcycle. The golfers head out to the course to enjoy the day’s event. Tommy chef cooks up a delicious lunch The Habitat for Humanity Restore continues to strive to meet it‟s goals which involve stewardship of resources, reducing landfill costs, providing inexpensive materials for home improvement, and serving as a financial partner in construction by providing usable materials and sustainable income for expansion. In 2008, Habitat‟s Restore had served over 13,000 customers at its Market Street site helping people to make inexpensive home improvements to raise their property value. The ReStore has kept more than 200 tons of building supplies and materials out of our landfill. In collaborating with various stores and retail outlets on the island, the ReStore is able to expand its stock of new items to offer at fifty-percent off retail. Individuals, businesses, and organizations are availed the opportunity to participate in community service by volunteering to come in and help stock shelves, price items, and keep the ReStore clean and tidy. In partnership with the County of Maui‟s Recycling program the ReStore receives individuals and groups on a „Tour de Trash‟ every first Wednesday of the month which educates in ways to participate in recycling and reducing filling up the landfill. If you and/or your group are interested in volunteering at the ReStore, please call 986-8050. Donations may be made payable to Habitat for Humanity Maui and mailed to P.O. Box 5034, Kahului, HI 96733 or visit our website at www.habitat-maui.org to make a donation online. Thank you for supporting our mission of “Building Houses—Building Hope”. Our electronics recycling—called E-cycling—is located at 970 Lower Main Street in Wailuku. This is on the west side of the street, between the KOA Club and TLC Automotive Care. Our container is positioned right at the corner of Lower Main Street and Mamo Place. We have signs announcing our service hanging on the width and length of the 40-foot container. We are open every Tuesday and Saturday from 9am—1pm. Anyone with a large load of equipment is asked to call our Hotline at 573-4018 to let us know you are coming. Please bring labor and off-load your own vehicle. Properly disposing of your electronic equipment at E-cycling is a key way to prevent heavy metals and other poisons from leeching into our groundwater. The ReStore receives individuals and groups on the County of Maui’s Recycling program’s „Tour de Trash‟. Special Education students from Maui High School lend a helping hand at the ReStore sorting products and cleaning with the help of their Educational Assistants. A group of volunteers from Kihei Charter School helped to clean and organize the ReStore. L to R: Darryl Banks, Vice President of Development for Betsill Bros. Habitat partner families Kahilihiwa Kipapa, Mattie Kaeo, Ewalani Shim, and Irene Neal help to wrap gifts during the Christmas Holiday Fundraiser Event at the Queen Kaahumanu Shopping Center. Mahalo! Habitat‟s faithful partner families respond to the call to help wrap gifts as a fundraiser event at the Queen Kaahumanu Shopping Center during the Christmas Holidays. Whether it be explaining about how the program works, testifying about how their partnership with Habitat has helped improve their lives, dancing hula, or wrapping gifts, our dear Kupuna homeowners can always be counted on to lend a helping hand at Habitat‟s various events. Other partner families and volunteers who helped to wrap gifts included: Kehau Kaleiohi and her daughter Moani Snell, Mary Ellen Farias, Ruth Kan Hai, Melanie Pali, Patti Paranada, Rob & Linda Habitat for Humanity has received a generous donation of office furniture from volunteer Annette Scognamillo at St. Rita‟s Church whose dad happens to be Hans Riecke, retired architect and founder of Riecke, Sunnland, Kono Architects. He designed and owns the architectural building located on the corner of Alamaha Street and Wakea Avenue in the Kahului Industrial Park. The firm has moved to another site and has decided to rent out the space to the Child and Family Services. They were not able to make use of the extensive built-in furniture units so Annette, a volunteer/lunch sponsor for Habitat for Humanity, decided to offer it to Habitat which happened to be looking at a furniture purchase for its new Wailuku site. Mahalo to Annette and her dad Mr. Hans Riecke for the much needed donation.
