Entitled, Edward Bailey of Maui: Teacher & Naturalist, Artist & Engineer, it is written by Linda McCullough Decker, Maui author and former Maui Historical Society trustee. Drawing heavily on letters and journals of the Baileys and their circle, Decker presents Edward and Caroline largely in their own words and those of their friends and neighbors. Detailed and vivid, Bailey’s words draw us into the world he helped shape, and share his hopes and his misgivings about those changes. Hardcover with Bailey’s paintings illustrated in full color. $34.95 Linda Decker, signing copies of her new book at the Bailey House in March. Remember all the wonderful quilts blowing in the breeze last spring at Bailey House? Last year’s quilt show was so much fun, we decided to do it again! The second annual quilt show and exhibit will be on Saturday May 14, 2011 Local quilters from across Maui will hang their quilts throughout the gardens and demonstrate quilting methods to visitors. Antique quilts from the Maui Historical Society and private collections will be exhibited in the Bailey House Museum. Admission to the Quilt Show includes admission to the museum and is $10 for adults. Children 12 and under are free. Aloha! We are very excited for upcoming events at the Bailey House Museum. On May 14th we have the beautiful “A Celebration of Quilts” Quilt Show and Exhibit. See the gardens come alive with color, talk to the quilters and view the antique Hawaiian quilts in the museum. On June 10th we have a special fundraiser for Maui Historical Society organized by kapa artist Wesley Sen. In 1987, Wesley Sen, Hōkūlani Holt and Pua Van Dorpe held kapa-making workshops and an exhibit at the Bailey House Museum. Kumu Wes was one of the first artists to revive the art of kapa making. He is putting together a program along with Kumu Hōkūlani Holt en`Ōhi`a `ai blooming titled “Hina & Maui: The Story of Hawaiian Tapa Making.” Come support the in the Bailey House garden Maui Historical Society while enjoying an original performance with costumes in traditional kapa. Kumu Wes will also be holding kapa-decoration workshops at Bailey House on June 10th and 11th. These treasured cultural practitioners are donating their time and talents and all proceeds from the event will benefit the Maui Historical Society. For more information, please see the insert in this newsletter or call us at 244-3326. If it has been awhile since your last visit to Bailey House Museum, please stop by and say hello! The gardens are so beautiful since the restoration last summer. Come and feel the peace of the garden while learning about native plants.
