As long as the world lasts, all who

The Jewish vision became the prototype for many similar grand designs
for humanity, both divine and

--William Rees-Mogg, former Editor-in-Chief for The Times of London and a member of the House
of Lords
Heaven forbid that the Jewish people
ever need the assistance of other
people the way that war has forced
Syrians to seek out the assistance of
Europeans, Arabs and the world at
large. History will record that when
Syrians were being turned away from
Arab countries and most European
ones, the Jewish people opened their
hearts to our plight.
Let history not record that one day
we forgot the kindness shown to us.
If a person's situation prevents them
from reciprocating the kindness
shown to them, it does not prevent
that person from saying "Thank you.”
For what it is worth, you have the
thanks of at least this Syrian. I myself
am not a media mogul or a well
placed columnist. I am at heart a
simple Syrian village boy caught up in
events far bigger than himself, trying
to muddle through as best as can be
expected. My powers of persuasion
are limited. Heck I can’t even convince one of my own brothers to
stop being such a Russophile.
But by chronicling and acknowledging
the numerous acts of compassion
and generosity shown by the Jewish
people to my own people, I can try
to ensure that Syrians, Arabs and the
world at large never be allowed to
forget what you have offered and
provided to Syrian refugees, at a time
when you had every historical and
practical reason not to.
Thank you Am Israel and may you
always be safe and blessed.

La Shana Tovah, Tikateyvu.
As the year 5777 begins,
Helene and I want to wish
everyone a very Happy New
Year. We will gather for
holiday services and it will
be good to see so many of
our fellow congregants. This
is the time of the year when
all of our Beth Tikvah family
comes together to celebrate
the joy of Judaism.
I would like to thank Gita
Freed, Irving Freed, Richard
Schultz, Jenni Zepnick and
Jerry Lutzker and his ushers
for all their hard work in
preparing our shul for the
holidays. Also, Gail JebyLevy for her hard work in
sprucing up our building;
Ron Schwartz and all his
helpers for setting up the
social hall so congregants
can be seated comfortably
as well as bringing in all the
books. And finally, to Marvin
Sekler for changing Torah
covers and getting them
prepared for services.
A big thanks also goes out
to all those behind the
scenes people who work
tirelessly to make our shul a
welcoming place.
All services this year will be
officiated by Rabbi Martin
Pasternak and Cantor Daniel Billet.
I am happy to announce that
we will be welcoming Rabbi
Moshe Edelman. He will join
us for one weekend a
month from September
through December. Between Rabbi Pasternak and
Rabbi Edelman, our congregation will have rabbinic
coverage for three week a
month.
In closing, I can only ask that
as a congregation, we have
your support, not only spiritually but monetarily. The
Kol Nidre Appeal has begun
and we ask for your generosity. Please make an attempt to become more
involved as well. Without
the presence of congregants, there is no synagogue.
Everyone has something
valuable to offer to the success of Congregation Beth
Tikvah.
Hag Sameach,
Jerry Wohlstetter
After the holidays, a new
rabbinic search committee
will convene. Please, do not
despair; there is a rabbi out
there who will join us and
help to continue to keep
our synagogue the warm
and vibrant place we attend
to have our faithful and spiritual experiences.
CBT thanks Investors Bank for their generous donation to underwrite
the printing costs for Congregation Beth Tikvah Times.
Celebrate your birthday,
anniversary, or any special
occasion with us and
sponsor a

Social Action by Beth Goldberg
Prime Minister Netanyahu chastised the
UN for its beginning as "a moral force
that became a moral farce”. That is because the UN has come up with so many
resolutions condemning Israel. The House
of Representatives and 88 US Senators
signed a bipartisan letter to President
Obama urging him to support direct Israeli-Palestinian negotiations and to veto
the onesided UN Security Council resolution. Efforts were made by the World
Jewish Congress to hold meetings with 40
Presidents. Prime ministers and foreign
ministers from 30 different countries
visiting New York for the meetings at the
UN General Assembly.
Ronald Lauder, the President of the WJC,
has been exposing disseminations of antiSemitic propaganda by Amazon's sale of
anti-Semitic and Holocaust denial books.
A petition has been circulated to Jeff Bezos, President of Amazon, to stop selling
books that inspire hate. He is urged to
stop profiting from selling books such as
"Holocaust Hoax Exposed" and "The Jews
and Their Lies" etc.
Please note: The views expressed in the following column is solely those of the author

The relationship

will increase US aid to $38 billion in security assistance for the next twelve years.
This will allow Israel to defend itself and

Bikur Cholim News
The BIKUR CHOLIM
COMMITTEE is looking for blank greeting
cards that you would
like to donate. These
cards are used to send
speedy recovery and
good wishes to those
who are sick and recovering from an illness.
Please bring any cards
you have to the office.
Thank you.
Bikur Cholim, or visiting the
sick, is more than an act of
charity; it is a commandment that is considered
binding on all Jews. The importance of visiting the sick
was underscored when G-d
visited Abraham after he
was circumcised (Genesis
17:26-18:1). In the act of
visiting Abraham when he
was ill, G-d set a precedent
for the Jewish people. Bikur
Cholim is a paradigm for
interpersonal relationships.
“And you shall love your
neighbor as yourself” (Leviticus 19:18).
The performance of this
mitzvah links us to all generations and connects us as
one people to each other
and to all humanity through
the G-dly attributes of compassion and loving-kindness.
We at Congregation Beth
Tikvah have such a viable
committee, which has been
keeping in touch with some
of our members who have
been ill or in an adult facility.
We not only visit, we make
telephone calls, send cards,
shop for groceries and have
been driving some of our
extended family to their
appointments. We have
made the commitment to
care for one another, and
bring the strength of community and connection of
our Jewish heritage to our
Congregation Beth Tikvah
Family.
I would also like to take this
opportunity to thank all of
our committee members
for the wonderful job they
are doing:
Tehillim or Psalms, have been recited by Jews for thousands of
years. These ancient prayers open our hearts and bring renewal and
strength to our daily lives. We at CBT in conjunction with Bikur
Cholim have formed a Tehillim Circle. On the second Tuesday of
every month, at 8:15 PM, we meet for 30 to 40 minutes and collectively recite specific chapters of Tehillim dealing with the healing of
the sick. At the end of the recitations we say a Mi Sheberach (a special prayer for the sick). The power of this group is that it utilizes the
collective strengths of those who are saying the psalms together. Join
us and bring the names of those persons to be included in our prayers. If you can’t make it, call the office with the person’s name and
their mother’s name, and we will include the person’s name in our
communal listing.

The Doris Kramer Preschool is up
and running as of Monday September 12th. We are very excited about
our new school year adventure. Our

Rosh Hashanah.
As of September 30th, we begin
Challah Express offering fresh challah to take home on Fridays for a
small cost. On Wednesday, October
5th, we also start our Wed. Hot
Lunch Program. We will prepare
and cook yummy hot lunches with
the preschoolers. We also serve
fresh fruit for snack and veggie of
the week with a hot lunch entree
Wishing everyone a sweet, happy

Sol Feld Religious School
There is an excitement
that accompanies the beginning of each school year
and this year is no exception. We have new students and returning students all eager to start
learning. What better way
to start the new year!
We are also heralding in
the Jewish New Year with
the sound of the Shofar at
Religious School. Each student had the opportunity
to blow the Shofar, some
for the first time. They
were very impressive in
their Shofar blowing abilities!
We will also be wishing for
a sweet new year with
apples and honey. Baking
our circular challahs, customary for Rosh Hashanah
will round out our new
year activities.
Of course, as always we
are moving ahead with our
lessons in Hebrew, tfillot
and holidays.
Wishing you all a happy and
healthy new year!

IRS and Security Summit Partners Warn of Fake Tax Bill Emails
By Harvey Greenberg
WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service and its Security Summit partners
today issued an alert to taxpayers and tax professionals to be on guard against fake
emails purporting to contain an IRS tax bill related to the Affordable Care Act.
The IRS has received numerous reports around the country of scammers sending a
fraudulent version of CP2000 notices for tax year 2015. Generally, the scam involves an email that includes the fake CP2000 as an attachment. The issue has been
reported to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration for investigation.
The CP2000 is a notice commonly mailed to taxpayers through the United States
Postal Service. It is never sent as part of an email to taxpayers. The indicators are:
 These notices are being sent electronically, even though the IRS does not initiate
contact with taxpayers by email or through social media platforms;
 The CP 2000 notices appear to be issued from an Austin, Texas, address;
 The underreported issue is related to the Affordable Care Act (ACA) requesting information regarding 2014 coverage;
 The payment voucher lists the letter number as 105C.
The fraudulent CP2000 notice included a payment request that taxpayers mail a
check made out to “I.R.S.” to the “Austin Processing Center” at a Post Office Box
address. This is in addition to a “payment” link within the email itself.
IRS impersonation scams take many forms: threatening telephone calls, phishing
emails and demanding letters.
Taxpayers or tax professionals who receive this scam email should forward it to
[email protected] and then delete it from their email account.
