It is summer and it's been
hot for the past few days.
We are in August and summer is coming to an end.
The High Holidays are fast
approaching, and we are
getting ready for it. We
hope that all the members
of this congregation get
their tickets for these wonderful holidays. We are
looking forward to seeing
you. Just to let all of you
know, our Rabbi Emeritus
Dr. Alan Lavin will be presiding over the high holidays. I know that l will be
looking forward to seeing
him again as I am sure you
are too.
It is being done, so by the
time you read the Beth Tikvah Times, it will be completed.
ship in. Let's show the candidate that we are one big
happy family searching for a
leader (in a rabbi's sense).
Things are going well at the
shul, the air conditioning is
working without any issues,
and now we must get ready
for the fall and the heating
season. We all had a great
time fishing last month.
For those who missed it,
there is always next year,
and we all hope more of
you will join us. We all
caught some fish, some had
to be thrown back to the
waters, and some were not
edible.
I have mentioned many,
many times, please try and
get involved in our shul.
Without you, where are we,
as a congregation, going?
Where will we be? Please,
we do need some help, the
very few can't do it all. For
those who continue to support the shul, I thank you.
Without your commitment,
we would have some major
problems. SUPPORT OUR
SHUL!!
We are still working on the
new and renovated Sanctuary, and yes there are some
minor setbacks and delays
of which I will not get into
at this time. The committee
has made a decision not to
have services in the Sanctuary for the high holy days,
so we will make do with
what we have in the social
hall. As you know, the social
hall has not been uplifted for
many years and we thought
it was time to get a new
facelift.
The Rabbi search committee is ongoing, and we have
a potential rabbi coming to
our shul, on August 16th at
7:00 PM. Please note that
this rabbi will look at our
shul, and make his decision
as we will do the same. I am
hoping that more of our
congregants will show up
for this event, and we need
your show and support, so I
ask all our members to
please be there, and show
this candidate how strong
we are as a congregation,
and what a beautiful place
that we all enjoy, and wor-
CBT thanks Investors Bank for their generous donation to underwrite

Susan and I are wishing you
a Shanah Tova to all, and
may the New Year bring
peace to the entire world.
May your new year be filled
with joy, health and happiness. We look forward to
the new year of 5776.
Peace and Shalom.
See you at shul.

The outpouring of friends who knew my
step-father Seymour Sigman, a temple member from a number of years back, was extremely heartwarming. The friends and congregants who did not know Seymour and
came to support and comfort us is a testament to the compassion of our Shul community. We would also like to thank you
for your donations to the Shul in memory of
Seymour.

Thank you again to my fellow congregants

Food for the Needy Mitzvah Update "If you can't feed one hundred people, then just feed one.”The High Holidays are quickly approaching! While we are looking forward to
attending the services in our synagogue,
please do not forget what our Talmud
teaches us, perform mitzvoth! Feeding the
hungry and helping the disadvantaged is
tzedakah and mitzvoth in the highest
sense.
We are currently sending $50 gift cards
to seven clients on a monthly basis. They
are from the supermarkets of their
choice. In a simplistic way, we are helping
these seniors stay independent and be
able to buy their everyday necessities.
Thank you to everyone who has donated
this past year. It is so very much appreciated. Please be aware that we are a role
model for synagogues to follow. You can
be very proud of your shul. Of course,
there are many seniors out there that
need assistance. Let us make our pledge
to help as many as we can.
There is a form in the current CBT

FOOD FOR THE NEEDY
PROJECT. Please make the check out
to Congregation Beth Tikvah and write
on the memo line Food Project. There
is no overhead. All the money we collect goes directly to the purchase of the

HIGH HOLIDAYS
Due to a delay in the construction of our sanctuary, we are planning to only use the social hall for all High Holiday services. There
will be no tent for junior congregation. This will be held in the double classroom downstairs. Since there is only one service each
day, the number of honors given out will be less than normal. We have tried to accommodate as many people as we can. Please
forgive us if you didn’t get an honor this year or you received an honor that is not to your liking.
RABBI DREIFUSS
Rabbi Dreifuss and his family would appreciate any of his friends sending him cards or letters just to let him know that they are still
thinking about him. For anyone who wants to know, Rabbi Dreifuss is suffering from dementia and may or may or not recognize the
name on the card, but his daughter said that by sending cards, it might spark something in his memory.

GIFT CARDS
Please be advised that we can no longer provide Waldbaums or Pathmark cards as these stores have stopped offering them.
The cards you still have are good, but it is best to use them as quickly as possible as at some point they will not be accepted by the
stores and we cannot refund them.
If there is a store that you will be using instead, please let us know so that we can have enough in stock. If you still need gift cards
for the holidays, please let us know today.
We hope that more of you will participate this year to help this be an even better fundraiser.
We wish you and yours a L'Shana Tovah.

Social Action by Beth Goldberg
Jewish artists and athletes are being
banned from participating in events because of their Jewishness and the protests
of the Boycott, Divest and Sanction (BDS)
movement. Matisyahu, a Jewish American
reggae star, refused to sign a statement
that he supported the creation of a Palestinian state. His performance at the Spanish Music Festival was cancelled. Other
artists, such as the Jerusalem String Quartet, which performed in London, as did
the Israeli Habima Theatre Company,
were subjected to insults and vilification
during the performance. Politics have
marred the scene and detracted from
artistic freedom. It is sad that the BDS
movement has been able to pressure the
Spanish Festival to cancel Matisyahu's
appearance. The racist BDS is making
Jews into pariahs. Spain has violated its
own non-discrimination laws because this
is a clear case of anti Semitism and Jewish
racism. I am happy to share with you the
news that the Spanish Rototom Sunsplash
festival reissued the invitation to Matisyahu. The United States and Israel petitioned the Spanish Ministry and protested
that the ban was purely anti-Semitism.
The Spanish Festival issued an apology to
the entertainer and stated that they were
concerned that his appearance might
disrupt the performance. (Editor’s note:
Page 11
Please note: The views expressed in the following column is solely those of the author
and do not, in any way, express the views of the CBT or its members.
Matisyahu sang a reggae version of
“Jerusalem (If I forget you)” at the concert, to show his real feelings in all of this.

In Montreal, Canada, there is a Jewish
businessman named Steve Maman who
was inspired by Oskar Schindler and is
being referred to as the Jewish Schindler.
He has donated and raised funds from
mostly Sephardic Jewish Canadian businessmen to rescue hundreds of Iraqi
Yazidi and Christian girls from slavery.
They were captured by ISIS troops after
fleeing from northern Iraq. Then they
were sold naked in the market where
they were bought by men to be sex
slaves. Mr. Maman raised thousands of
Canadian dollars from business contacts
to help free the girls who range from
eight years old to adolescents and women. They are raped, beaten, abused brutally and sold to brothels. So far, 120 girls
have been freed but 2700 still remain in
captivity. The cost of redeeming a life is
$1,000 to $3,000. He is now trying to
raise a few million dollars by using a site
on the internet called GoFund Me. As of
August 18th, they have raised $395,000 for
the project called Liberation of Christian
and Yazidi Children of Iran (CYCI).
Thank you to the following people for making donations to
purchase our new machzors.
Carol Tallis
Rose & Claude Lempereur
They claim that the money does not go to
ISIS but to local Arabs or Kurds who
serve as brokers. These negotiators have
made a business out of buying Yazidi
women for a fee. Some of them have
been killed. Pope Francis has protested
the silence of the international community
about the ongoing persecution by the
fanatic brutal ISIS because of their loyalty
to the Gospel. Yet Mr. Maman's appeals
to sixty church organizations in Canada
and Montreal have not responded with
donations.

Bikur Cholim, or visiting the
sick, is more than an act of
charity; it is a commandment that is considered
binding on all Jews. The importance of visiting the sick
was underscored when G-d
visited Abraham after he
was circumcised (Genesis
17:26-18:1). In the act of
visiting Abraham when he
was ill, G-d set a precedent
for the Jewish people. Bikur
Cholim is a paradigm for
interpersonal relationships.
“And you shall love your
neighbor as yourself” (Leviticus 19:18).
The performance of this
mitzvah links us to all generations and connects us as
one people to each other
and to all humanity through
the G-dly attributes of compassion and loving-kindness.
We at Congregation Beth
Tikvah have such a viable
committee, which has been
keeping in touch with some
of our members who have
been ill or in an adult facility.
We not only visit, we make
telephone calls, send cards,
shop for groceries and have
been driving some of our
extended family to their
appointments. We have
made the commitment to
care for one another, and
bring the strength of community and connection of
our Jewish heritage to our
Congregation Beth Tikvah
Family.
If you need us we are just a
telephone call away. Simply
call Rabbi Lavin at 785-2445
or myself, Louise.

for the wonderful job they

Tehillim or Psalms, have been recited by Jews for thousands of
years. These ancient prayers open our hearts and bring renewal and
strength to our daily lives. We at CBT in conjunction with Bikur
Cholim have formed a Tehillim Circle. On the second Tuesday of
every month, at 8:15 PM, we meet for 30 to 40 minutes and collectively recite specific chapters of Tehillim dealing with the healing of
the sick. At the end of the recitations we say a Mi Sheberach (a special prayer for the sick). The power of this group is that it utilizes the
collective strengths of those who are saying the psalms together. Join
us and bring the names of those persons to be included in our prayers. If you can’t make it, call the office with the person’s name and
their mother’s name, and we will include the person’s name in our
communal listing.

As the summer is racing to
an end, I am struck by the
sense of change that always comes with the end
of summer. Gone, soon,
are the days that are relaxing if only because they are
warm. No ice or snow to
battle, no coats to pull on.
For those who are lucky
enough to have a change in
schedule, summer offers a
break for mind and body.
Kids get to be kids with
more time to play and no
homework to do.
These last weeks of summer open a window to the
upcoming change. Kids are
forced to acknowledge the
upcoming school year with
outings to buy school supplies. Older kids are anticipating a new middle
school, a new high school,
a new college or just a
new school year with new
teachers. Change brings
with it a myriad of emotions: excitement, eagerness, anxiety and stress.
The whole household is
affected by these changes
in the atmosphere.
To quote the movie Mary
Poppins: "the wind has
changed sir, it seems to be
coming in from a new quarter." While I will miss these
warm summer days, I am
looking forward to the new
school year and hope you
are too!
Enjoy the rest of your summer and.....

Farewell from Sam & Marlene Shraga
Dear Congregation Beth Tikvah Family,
On Aug. 26th, the Shraga family will relocate from
Wantagh to Charlotte, NC. Despite our mixed feelings,
we
are excited about being in close proximity to our son
Jonathan and his wife Barbara and our 4 granddaughters.
Sam will miss being a part of morning minyan and occasionally officiating as well as going to Men's Club
activities (i.e. – bowling, etc.) and attending Jenni Zepnick’s Torah studies on Shabbat. He will miss volunteering
to make the baseball world series as successful as possible. Both of us welcomed attending Shabbat services
and Temple events. I will certainly miss Sisterhood. Most
of all it will be sad to leave Beth Tikvah congregants.
So please be in touch. We look forward to hearing from
all of you!!!
Our heartiest wishes for a Happy and Healthy New
Year. Lashana Tovah Lehitraot!

It’s Time to Time to Order Your Lulav and Etrog
I love Sukkot. It is such a joyous holiday, and we observe
ancient traditions, which remind us of our links to our
ancestors. One of them is the procession with the lulav
and etrog at morning services. We say
the blessing over the lulav and etrog
each morning of Sukkot, except for
Shabbat. During Sukkot, the lulav and
etrog are used during the Hallel service
and later during the special Sukkot festival procession. When the blessings are
recited over them, it is customary to
wave the lulav and etrog to all the four
winds and also upward and downward,
signifying that G-d is everywhere. The
traditional prayer Hoshana ("O’ save
us!") which is said on each of the days of Sukkot except
Shabbat, is accompanied by a procession with the "Four
Kinds" around the bimah in the shul. It makes a beautiful
and impressive sight. One can just imagine how, in the
days of old, thousands upon thousands of Jewish pilgrims
marched to the Holy Temple with lulavim in their hands
swaying with the breeze.
Ben’s Deli, August 23, 2015
I find it very exciting to be part of this tradition.
We cannot order extra lulavim and etrogim for the
congregation. If you would like to participate,
it is advisable that you purchase one for your
own use.
The cost is $36, which must be paid before we
place your order. Please order and make payment through the office, tel. 785-2445. We
must receive your order and payment by
Wednesday September 9th. I am requesting
shipment for just before Sukkot because the
greens have a short shelf life. I will call you as
soon we receive them and will arrange for
pick up. You can also ask to store them in the synagogue
refrigerator.
