2011-2012 Annual Report
Minnesota Women’s Consortium
MISSION
To achieve equality and justice for all women and girls by connecting organizations and individuals
that share this common goal. Founded in 1980, the Consortium connects 150 diverse organizations
each working in their own way to make that vision a reality.
BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Message from the Executive Director
The Minnesota Women’s Consortium has been serving women, girls, and organizations since
1980. Started by a group of women looking for a way to foster collaboration and increase
communication, the organization has grown to serve 150 nonprofit organizations and
hundreds of individuals. We saw many changes this past year. Our Executive Director,
Bonnie Watkins, left to pursue new ventures; our programs for emerging feminist leaders
grew to support twelve young women; we produced three videos to educate and advocate for
older women’s economic security; and much more.
For 32 years the Women’s Consortium has empowered, supported, and connected people
across the state to support a movement of individuals working to improve the status of
women and break down gender barriers. We do this in two ways. First, we build and sustain
leadership for women and girls through programs like Presidents on President’s Day and
Girls Rock! the Capitol. Second, we organize women for equality and change. By bringing
diverse voices to the table, the Women’s Consortium builds community and coalitions in
order to strengthen and diversify the work of our members. Examples of this work include
the Women’s Policy Summit, publications that inform and promote the work of our
members, and growth and support services like fiscal agency.
Our community partners, both individuals and organizations, have generously supported us
this past year, entrusting to us the financial means to provide leadership and resources to
Minnesotans working toward an equitable and just world for women and girls. As we look
to the future, we hope to rely on you for your support. With friends
like you, we will continue to provide leadership and support needed to
achieve women’s equality and justice.

Girls Rock!
We hosted our annual Girls Rock! the Capitol in
February. With more than 60 girls participating in a
day of activities centered on introducing emerging
women leaders to state government and legislative
procedure, the event was a huge success. Attendees
included participants from TVbyGirls, Today’s
Women Alliance, WISE, Minnesota Indian Women’s Resource Center, Minnesota African Women’s
Association, Girls International Forum, and more.
The girls took a tour of the Capitol, met with 17
political leaders, and participated in mock elections
and mock committee hearings.
The Women’s Policy Summit builds partnerships between advocates & policymakers.
Two guests, young Indian activists Shachi Sheth
and Issa Sheth, founders of the child rights
organization Shaishev, spoke at the event, emIn December, we hosted the first-ever Women’s Policy Summit. Inphasizing the importance of girls’ and womens’

Spring Meeting
We hosted our Spring Meeting in
April. This year, our conversation focused on food justice,
taking a close look at the gender
inequity in the distribution,
production, and consumption
of food. Thanks to sponsorships
from Mississippi Market, Coop Partners, The Coffee Shop
NE, and Kowalski’s markets, we
provided light refreshments for
participants that included representatives from member organizations as well as many members
of the community.
We were honored to have a panel
of experts to speak at the meeting. Speakers included Karen
Clark, MN State Representative
and the Women’s Environmental
Institute (WEI); Valerie Martinez,
WEI; Angel Buechner and Rosemary Williams from the Welfare
Rights Committee; and Tracy
Ore, professor of sociology at St.
Cloud State University.
With more than 40 guests participating in this discussion, panelists shed light on issues affecting
women’s nutrition and food access. We look forward to bringing
additional prominent women’s
issues to the table at future community outreach events.
Our College Feminists Connect
program has been doing great things
across the state. In November, we
collaborated with St. Cloud State’s
Women’s Center, Planned Parenthood MN, ND, SD and others for a
discussion about reproductive health,
sex education, and what’s at stake for
Minnesota women in the current political climate. The event, titled “Our
Future, Our Choice, Our Fight,”
consisted of two discussion sessions,
each with over 80 participants, and
featured speakers Tim Stanley and
Rita Molestina from Planned Parenthood. The large turnout and high
level of engagement in the discussions
proved that this program’s community involvement is a successful tactic
for engaging young feminists in Minnesota and encouraging their participation in the movement. We plan to
facilitate future presentations and are
actively seeking organizations with
whom to partner on such endeavors.
