2011 Annual Report
Years Strong Crispus Attucks Association of York, Pennsylvania 2011 Annual Report A Message from the Chief Executive Officer 80 Years Strong is the theme for our Annual Report – in 2011 we celebrated our 80th anniversary of service to York residents! Eighty years of teaching kids to grow up to be responsible members of society, just like Voni Grimes, one of the first Crispus Attucks kids. He is just one example of how Crispus Attucks can lead a child to become a leader of tomorrow. With a foundation of 80 years, we will build stronger, much-needed programs that: • teach children and youth to be responsible citizens by setting and achieving goals for success in life, • help students earn their high school diplomas and encourage students to continue their education after graduation, • provide affordable, quality housing for York City residents, • help youth and young adults find employment and independence, • provide child care with an emphasis on learning and creativity, so parents can work or go to school knowing their children are safe and well cared for, • improve the south York neighborhood where we’re located, • provide programs to give seniors an opportunity to eat lunch with their peers and participate in program activities and health screenings while continuing to live independently, and • help men coming out of prison find jobs and successfully rejoin society. Throughout this report you’ll see how your support is helping area residents achieve success. We’re proud of our history, and we’re excited about being the Heart of Change in York City and County in the future. Thank you to everyone who has made these 80 years so successful. We hope we can count on your support in 2012 and beyond. Board of Directors Daniel P. Eric Menzer York Revolution Dr. Joel Rodney University of South Florida William Simpson Susquehanna Real Estate Tom Wolf The Wolf Organization Background Founded in 1931, the Crispus Attucks Association was started to provide a center for community life for African Americans in a segregated York, Pennsylvania. The organization takes its name from the American revolutionary of the same name, an African American and former slave who was one of the five killed in the Boston Massacre in 1770. Today, the Crispus Attucks Association is a multi-purpose center in southeast York City offering a wide range of services for people of all backgrounds and ages, fulfilling its mission as the heart of change for all people in need. You will find in this report details of these many programs and a glimpse of some of the people we have touched through them. Looking Back, Looking Forward 2011 marked the 80th Anniversary of the Crispus Attucks Association. In 1931, we started out as a social and recreational program only. Later that decade, we added child care which included an emphasis on the importance of education. In the late 1960s, our building was condemned and in 1971, a new building was completed. The 1970s were a turbulent time for Crispus Attucks. In 1979, Bobby Simpson took over leadership of the Association on an interim basis – and 32 years later, he’s still leading us forward to meet the changing needs of community members. and educational opportunities to the area in response to neighborhood surveys of residents’ needs. Thanks to the support we have received from you, we are a stronger organization offering a wide variety of services to York County residents. Over the last 80 years, community needs have changed and Crispus Attucks has changed to meet those needs. In this Annual Report you will find information about the programs we offer and a few of the people whose lives you help us positively impact. Looking forward, we will continue to change In the 1980s, we as community needs started working to make Chief Executive Officer change. We are excited the neighborhood safer as we look to the future Bobby Simpson and improve the housing and we hope you will available to residents. In the continue to support our efforts to 1990s and 2000s, we worked to improve York, one person at a bring health services, more jobs, time. 3 Early Learning Center Served: 319 children, ages 3 months to 12 years Services: Year-round Child Care & Education Age Appropriate Learning NAEYC (National Assn. for the Education of Young Children) Accreditation PA Keystone STAR 4 Site Pre K Counts Site Weekdays 6:30 AM to 5:30 PM The Early Learning Center is an all inclusive program, working with children of various abilities.
