Crispus Attucks Association of York, Pennsylvania
2011 Annual Report
A Message from the Chief Executive Officer
80 Years Strong is the theme for our Annual Report – in 2011 we
celebrated our 80th anniversary of service to York residents! Eighty years of
teaching kids to grow up to be responsible members of society, just like Voni
Grimes, one of the first Crispus Attucks kids. He is just one example of how
Crispus Attucks can lead a child to become a leader of tomorrow. With a
foundation of 80 years, we will build stronger, much-needed programs that:
• teach children and youth to be responsible citizens by setting and
achieving goals for success in life,
• help students earn their high school diplomas and encourage students
to continue their education after graduation,
• provide affordable, quality housing for York City residents,
• help youth and young adults find employment and independence,
• provide child care with an emphasis on learning and creativity, so
parents can work or go to school knowing their children are safe and
well cared for,
• improve the south York neighborhood where we’re located,
• provide programs to give seniors an opportunity to eat lunch with their
peers and participate in program activities and health screenings while
continuing to live independently, and
• help men coming out of prison find jobs and successfully rejoin society.
Throughout this report you’ll see how your support is helping area
residents achieve success. We’re proud of our history, and we’re excited about
being the Heart of Change in York City and
County in the future.
Thank you to everyone who has made these 80
years so successful. We hope we can count on
your support in 2012 and beyond.

Background
Founded in 1931, the
Crispus
Attucks
Association
was started
to provide

African

in

York,
Pennsylvania. The
organization takes its
name from the American
revolutionary of the
same name, an African
American and former
slave who was one of the
five killed in the Boston
Massacre in 1770.
Today, the Crispus
Attucks Association is a
multi-purpose center in
southeast York City
offering a wide range of
services for people of all
backgrounds and ages,
fulfilling its mission as
the heart of change for
all people in need.
You will find in this
report details of these
many programs and a
glimpse of some of the
people we have touched
through them.
Looking Back, Looking Forward
2011
marked the 80th
Anniversary of the Crispus
Attucks Association. In 1931, we
started out as a social and
recreational program only. Later
that decade, we added child care
which included an emphasis on the
importance of education. In the
late 1960s, our building was
condemned and in 1971, a new
building was completed. The 1970s
were a turbulent time for Crispus
Attucks. In 1979, Bobby Simpson
took over leadership of
the Association on an
interim basis – and 32
years later, he’s still
leading us forward to

Thanks to the support we have
received from you, we are a
stronger organization offering a
wide variety of services to York
County residents. Over the last 80
years, community needs have
changed and Crispus Attucks has
changed to meet those needs.
In this Annual Report you will

the programs we offer

The Early Learning Center is an all inclusive
program, working with children of various
abilities. In 2011, we offered vision screening, lead
testing, and dental checkups with fluoride
treatments to our students.
Reading is fundamental to learning and we
emphasize how important it is with our students
and parents. Our preschoolers can participate in
the 100 Book Challenge by taking books home
each night to read with their parents. As the
number of books read increases, prizes are
awarded for achieving various milestones. Paula

Children who were preparing to enter

“Ready Freddy” program to make the transition
smoother. We introduced the “I’m Learning/I’m

Michelle Obama’s goal of improving health and
nutrition in children.
Our commitment to education extends to our
staff also. This year two staff completed the Child
Development Associate Certification
requirements. Nine staff were enrolled in college
courses and worked toward a degree. One staff
member earned her Early Childhood Certification
and is now enrolled in a Masters Degree Program.

This year something exciting happened in our
Rising STARS Program. It was not that more
than 40 parents and grandparents volunteered in
our program, nor was it that many of those
parents were alumni of the Youth against Drugs
Program, the predecessor of Rising STARS. They
were important, but the exciting part was that
some parents began organizing and coordinating
programs which created
an increase of parental
support. The programs
created are listed below:
Lil’ South Side Steppers
Drill Team: including 30
students, five- to sevenyears-old. Their very
first performance was

Celebration
for

are
collectively part of our group mentoring that
includes activities and projects geared toward
youth. Activities include dinner and breakfast
talks, individualized mentoring, and communityservice projects.
It Takes a Village: basketball and mentoring
program was created to give youth an
opportunity to learn basketball skills, teamwork,
and leadership skills. Fathers who are concerned
about their community and want to give back
created this program.
We all know the importance of making sure
that our young people feel safe and valued. It
takes all of us, parents and community, working
together as a team. Our youth deserve the very
best services available. The increase of parental
involvement is a much needed partnership for
the success of our young people.

Center. This 37-day intensive training program
is required for our students to receive CNA
certification. Our staff worked with the
students to overcome the barriers of
transportation and child care. We worked
closely with them and their instructors
throughout the program to insure their
successful completion of the program. Each
student had to pass numerous tests throughout
the training and the average score on the final
tests for these eight students was 98%.
They worked hard to balance their training,
working, and home lives to guarantee their
success in the program. They all maintained a
100% attendance rate, all eight students
successfully completed the program, and all of
them are now gainfully employed as CNAs.
Upon completion of the program, Rosario
obtained employment at Rest Haven

employed by Manor Care Nursing Home in
York. Both girls

Former tenant and new home 2011. Even with the
responsibility
of
owner Ydelqui
raising a baby and
maintaining a full time job, among other things,
Ydelqui wanted to provide a good life for her
daughter.
She was a very responsible tenant always
keeping her unit, as well as the hallways and
lobby of her apartment building, clean. Her
8
willingness to help her neighbors and go the extra
mile has benefitted her already.
While a Crispus Attucks tenant, Ydelqui went
through the York Housing Assistance Program.
Here she learned about homeownership
responsibilities and received assistance with closing
costs. She secured a mortgage and purchased a
lovely home in the city where she and her daughter
live. We are proud of her success in becoming a
homeowner in such a short period of time and wish
her continued happiness and success.
The floods and other natural disasters in the fall
of 2011 created havoc
with several of Crispus
Attucks’ historic housing
properties.

In 2011, we continued to build our
collaboration with several agencies including
Community Progress Council (CPC). Through
our relationship with CPC, Mr. Eugene
Washington became a driver for us this year.
This gives us the capability to provide
transportation services for seniors, especially
those

Because this service is provided by Mr.

successful and allows members to attend lunch,
program activities, and health screenings more
consistently. Also, it gives the director more time
to focus on programming.

including bus trips, card games, and Bingo,
