ABOUT THE DAM SHOW
The Dam Show is a cooperative effort of the Austin Dam Memorial
Association and Potter County Fine Arts Council. Both groups are
all-volunteer organizations. and money is always an issue for both.
The Dam Association cleared its treasury to improve the road and
bring electricity to the dam this year.
The Art Council’s money goes into the show itself for artist fees and
sound and on-stage lighting. Much of the progress of both organizations comes from the energy of volunteers. So we all volunteers!
DAM SHOW RULES
1) Families First: The Dam Show has an interesting mix of performers – that’s an annual goal. But an even more important goal is
that this is maintained as a festival that is safe and comfortable for
families. The legacy of the Dam Show is one of high quality performances on stage and a peaceful, mellow feeling. Festival goers can
feel relaxed, comfortable and can enjoy the entertainment without
any irritation. The sound system is tweaked in a way that folks can
hear the nuances of the music and don’t have to spend time trying
to figure if the decibel level might exceed recommended limits.
2) Good Taste: The Dam Association reserves the right (and has
never even had to think about using that right) to remove anyone
from the property who fails to act in good taste in any way or fails to
observe the Families First Rule Number 1.
3) Follow the Dam Rules: They include NO CLIMBING ON DAM
RUINS, NO JUMPING OFF DAM ROCKS, NO SWIMMING IN
FREEMAN RUN or the little spring-fed ponds around the dam.

all times: There may be some break times if children are engaged in activities like storytelling or art projects – but the watchful
eyes of parents are necessary. There is nothing more annoying to
our volunteers than having to ask children not to climb on the dam
ruins or other rules violations while parents sit by passively.
5) Realize that the park is a work in progress: We
are charged with maintaining the park as a heritage property and
preserving the property as a study site. Part of the reservation in
aggressively moving rocks and landscaping is tied to this concept.
We are attempting to move deliberately and thoughtfully as we work
to make improvements at the park. So – watch out for uneven terrain!
6) Trash: We are all volunteers and hope that everyone visiting
the park acts as a volunteer to help keep the grounds picked up and
free from trash. TRASH IN FIRE RINGS has been a pain. HELP!

FREE GRASS UNION
Born at the turn of the century, Free Grass Union has spun its blend of old
timey mountain music with bluegrass, New England dance tunes, blues songs,
and much more. The band is comprised of Kim Humphrey on guitar, harmonica, autoharp, dobro, banjo, and vocals; award-winning mandolinist Greg Butler, who also plays guitar and
sings; and David Nelinson
on guitar, mandolin, and vocals. Free Grass Union has
opened for David Grisman,
Ricky Skaggs and many
more bluegrass legends.
The band has a busy festival
schedule stretching into October. “The band’s sincere
respect for the roots of bluegrass and its joy in performing is infectious,” said one
reviewer. “Free Grass Union has never played a gig that didn’t leave its listeners yearning for more.”

History of Austin Dam
Austin was one of the boom towns of the region’s 1890-1910 lumber era. As
the old growth trees were vanishing, the Freeman Run valley still had immense
tracts of pulpwood. Industrialist George Bayless arrived from Binghamton, N.Y.,
to build a paper mill.
Freeman

the steady flow
of water needed
to power the
mill, so Bayless in
1909 contracted
for the construction of a huge
concrete dam. It
stretched nearly
550 feet across
the valley, stood 50 feet high, and held approximately 250 million gallons of
water at a depth of 40 feet.
While some townspeople worried that the dam might break, most saw it as a
symbol of continued employment and prosperity. They speculated that, even
if the dam failed, Austin was far enough downstream that the water’s depth
would probably be no more than a few inches.

The dam gave way on the afternoon of Sept. 30, 1911, releasing a torrent that
claimed upwards of 80 lives and nearly wiped out the town. After the flood,
many families moved out. Others persevered and rebuilt the community.

THE E.O. AUSTIN HOME & HISTORICAL MUSEUM
The E. O. Austin Home and Historical Museum is a visible symbol of perseverance and hometown pride. It’s also an important storehouse of memories,
preserved for future generations.
Perhaps it was inevitable that the wealth of Freeman Run Valley history collected and recorded by so many would one day come together under one roof.
Still, the colossal task required a true community effort.
Seeds were planted in March 2001 when a group of local citizens with a keen
interest in the region’s past gathered to form a local historical society. And
where better to showcase the many photos, artifacts and memories of the past
than in the home of the town’s founding father, Edward O. Austin?
Austin’s original home had been gone for years, but the local leaders had an
extensive collection of photos and written descriptions. They set their sights on
building a replica of the structure, right down to the fancy scrollwork and spacious porch, and making it headquarters for the new Austin Historical Society.
The E. O. Austin Home and Historical Museum is the jewel of downtown Austin, built on the community square, just a stone’s throw from the lot where the
town founder’s home stood. Under its roof, visitors can step back in time to
gain a better appreciation of the struggles and the triumphs of previous generations. Knowledgeable volunteers can help you interpret the exhibits and
answer questions.

Songwriters’ Roundtable
The Roundtable is a songwriter’s showcase and an “in the round” where
each month we present songwriters from around the country sharing their
songs and the stage at the Denton Hill Ski Lodge.

Considered one of the premier bluegrass fiddlers of his generation, Mike
picked up a fiddle at age four, and his talent was recognized early. In 1993,
he made his Grand Ole Opry debut as a guest of Alison Krauss.
His list of guest appearances over
the years is a who’s-who of bluegrass legends including Bill Monroe, Ralph Stanley, Mac Wiseman, Doc Watson and others. At
the 2001 IBMA awards, Mike took
his first Fiddle Player of the Year
award, and shared the title of Entertainer of the Year with Rhonda
Vincent and the Rage. He has
since won four more Fiddle Player
of the Year awards. “Flame Keeper” (2002) was chosen the IBMA’s
Instrumental Album of the Year. In
2004, Mike shared the same Album award for “Tom Adams and
Michael Cleveland Live at the
Ragged Edge,” an album of fiddle
and banjo duets. In 2006, his solo
recording, “Let ‘Er Go, Boys!,” won
Instrumental Album of the Year. Mike, who lives in Charlestown, Indiana, has
performed most recently with Vince Gill, Marty Stuart, and J.D. Crowe and the
New South. Rounding out his band are Jesse Brock, mandolin and vocals;
Todd Rakestraw, guitar and vocals; John Mark Batchelor, banjo; and Marshall

The Dam Show: A Brief History
The Dam Show celebrates its sixth birthday this year. Six years old, same as
a first-grader. And like a first grader, full of life, full of hope, full of energy and
ready to move forward with the confidence of having a good mission, powered
by wonder, curiosity and creativity.
This year’s Dam Show features Michael Cleveland, who by anyone’s standards
is a truly outstanding musician. He is one of the very best fiddle players on the
planet. Folks like Rickie Skaggs and Rhonda Vincent love playing with him
because they know when he picks up the fiddle, something magical with real
substance is about to happen.
By the time he was six years old, he had two years of classical violin lessons
under his belt. By the time he was ten, a fourth grader in a school for the blind,
he had been zapped by the music of Bill Monroe, was literally taken under the
master’s wing, and ended up on the stage of the Grand ‘Ol Opry as a guest of
Allison Krauss.
The Dam Show is still a child and so are some of the performers this year.
Arowyn Bailey will perform with her mother Eppie and members of Freakish
Owl Boy on Saturday evening. Arowyn is four. Cheyenne Hawk, three-yearold daughter of Cherylann Hawk, will perform with her mom on Friday. Gabe

The Slant
Three young musicians with Coudersport roots are making a name for themselves with “The Slant,” a Pittsburgh-based band. Mark Zedonek, Zach Dow
and Brad Austin – together with Andre Costello – have just released a fourth
album, “Old North,” which has received positive reviews from, among others, National Public Radio (NPR). Zedonek is
featured vocalist, songwriter and guitarist. Dow,
the drummer, and Austin,
bassist, joined him in their
teens and Costello, who
performs on harmonica
and guitar, came along after the Coudersport left for
college. All four musicians
collaborate on songwriting. They’re currently living together in Pittsburgh, playing clubs and college
campuses while riding the wave as professional musicians as far as it will
take them. “We’re probably the closest to our original hopes of moving people,
including ourselves, with our music as we ever have been,” members of The
Slant said in an interview last month.

Trimbur will perform with his Brother Eli on Friday. They are both part of the
11-and-under crowd.
Hilary Gordnier, Cassey Stuckey and Brittany Simms just became licensed
drivers. Joe Bartholomew is 18, Maggie Acker is 15. Bobby Brown is 12. They
will all be singing and playing for the opening of this year’s Dam Show.
Returning this year will be The Slant. Members of that band waited hopefully
for a chance to get on stage during the wee hours of Dam Show II. Their
work went nationwide this summer with an interview and sound track which
appeared on the website of National Public Radio.
Last summer, two of the members of the new band Freakish Owl Boy, nervously
played their instruments for Dam Show V as part of an Arts In Education project.
This year they return with confidence and their own body of music. And along
the way, one ot their new pieces was chosen as the theme song for a movie
that will be headed for the major festivals.
The Dam Show represents a blank page, where young musicians can rub
elbows and share the stage with seasoned veterans like the members of
Michael Cleveland’s band Flamekeeper. And they can do it before an audience
that came to hear real live music created and performed by real live people.
An audience here to be entertained, to hear new things, to share in that allimportant chemistry that must be present for good works to be created.

for industries which poured into the
valley after roads were blazed: sawmills, chemical plants, kindling wood
factories, paper mills and others.
After serving in the Grand Army of the
Republic during the Civil War, Austin
returned to the region. He built his
second home in 1878, in the area
that’s now the community square.
E. O. Austin died on Aug. 1, 1909. He
and his wife Julia are buried in the
family plot at Forest Hill Cemetery.
The borough that bears his name today
is a tight-knit community situated amid
an abundance of natural resources.

Ryan Montbleau Band
Ryan Montbleau has developed quite a following as he has branched off from
his home base in Boston to become a hot ticket on the 2008 summer festival
scene. He pull into Austin fresh from a California swing and is expected to bring
a following all his own. Montbleau is described as a “pure soul singer -- not in
the traditional sense, but as an artist who sings purely from his soul in a voice
every bit as honest, open-hearted and original as the stories he tells in his
songs.” As lead vocalist and guitarist, he is surrounded by young and talented
performers on drums, keyboards, bass and viola. Together, they produce a musical tapestry that blends folk, blues, country, cocktail music, rock, gypsy jazz
and psychedelia. “I’ve listened to all kinds of styles ever since I can remember,
from Bell Biv Devoe to
Bob Dylan, so being
interested in a lot of
musical elements just
came naturally,” says
Montbleau. “The other
guys are the same
way. Some are firmly
rooted in jazz, some
classically
trained.
Most of what we do is
rooted in something
older, but from there, it
goes in every direction you can think of.”
Through it all, Montbleau’s storytelling holds the spotlight. His songs are rich
in the kind of real-life detail that makes characters breathe. He enjoys meeting
a national tour schedule that includes more than 200 shows. “When you strip
away all the goals I might have as an artist, what I really want to do with my life
is uplift people,” Montbleau says. “My favorite thing in the world is looking out
from the stage and seeing smiling faces.”

FREAKISH OWL BOY
Freakish Owl Boy began as a side band for siblings Eppie Cataldo Bailey, Ezra
Cataldo, Julie Cataldo and their beloved Logan Bailey. They began writing
together and had such fun that they decided to go public. The response was
overwhelmingly positive. Earlier
this year, they were fortunate
enough to be invited to write the
soundtrack for a motion picture,
Hereafter, directed by Jeshua
DeHorta, to be released this fall.
Yayoda Records, a small record
label, joined with them to record
their first CD, Soul of a Crow, released earlier this year. The band is now working on a second CD. Their work is acoustic-based, experimental, sometimes
mocking, charming and often funny. It’s a show like none you’ve ever seen –
kind of freakish!
CHERYLANN HAWK
They say she “awakens the soul.” Cherylann Hawk is
graced with jazzy, percussive and dynamic acoustic guitar
skills, rhythmic lyrics full of life and alliteration that float
over intricate, catchy melodies, and a voice that saturates
the senses. She captures any audience instantly: passionate and playful, graceful and groovy. A Cherylann show
has universal appeal with elements of pop rock, jazz, folk,
blues, country and exotic rhythms. Listen to the lyrics and
you’ll feel love, longing, and passion for life. She’s a longtime Pittsburgh favorite now residing in Virginia with her
husband Jeremiah and toddler Cheyenne. Said music

Groovin’ Lumens Multimedia Concert Enhancements
Groovin’ Lumens was started in 1993 by Andy Waters and Doug Schoenherr in
the Rochester, N.Y. area. As time went on, the business evolved from small, local
light shows to major multimedia concert enhancements for legends such as Del
McCoury, Vassar Clements, the Jerry Garcia Band and others. When Groovin’
Lumens first proposed to bathe the entire expanse of the Austin Dam in color
lights, Dam Show organizers were skeptical. But it proved to be an outstanding
success and the match that was made in 2003 continues today. Andy Waters is
so committed to the success of the festival that he serves on the Dam Show Committee and is a faithful member of the Austin Dam Memorial Association.
J. Guy and the Grateful Floyd Band
A cross between the Grateful Dead and Pink Floyd – consider the possibilities!
This band from Easton, Pa., has a sound that is all its own, heavy on guitar work
and free-flowing. Grateful Floyd is both an original and cover band that could at
any time launch into the music of Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Allman Brothers, James
Taylor, CSNY, Van Morrison, Jimmy Buffett, Marshall Tucker Band, Tom Petty,
and others. J. Guy handles lead vocals with guitar, keyboards and harmonica.
Carter Grant takes care of the bulk of the lead guitar work. He and drummer Scott
Smith help out on vocals, while bassist Sloan Stewart holds things together.

Buddhahood
One of the most popular acts to ever appear at the Dam Show returns this
year to fill the Freeman Run valley with the rich blend of horns, drums, vocal
harmony and an infectious spirit. Members of Buddhahood will be performing with heavy hearts, however, as

stallation of electrical service, and development of a campground.
There’s the never-ending quest to bring reliable water service to the park
through the drilling of a well, additional work needed on the access road, and
much, much more.
Additionally, AMDA and representatives from Austin Borough have stepped
up their talks over a proposal to develop a link between the borough and the
Austin Dam Memorial Park. Among the possibilities:
• expansion of the park into an area south of the current features;
• development of a walking or bicycling trail leading from the park to Austin;
• use of existing structures and materials to create landscapes, picnic areas, and educational walks;
• historical tributes to the labors and the spirit of the men and women who
built the town of Austin;
• a site where community organizations can hold festivals, art and craft
shows, heritage events and other activities.
This expansion could allow visitors to access the park from northern or southern gateways. It may also create a peaceful six-mile loop for biking, skiing, running, hiking, nature walks, bird watching and other recreation. Another benefit
would be direct access to the property from Pa. Rt. 872.
A steering committee, made up of
community representatives, members of the ADMA and Austin Borough
Council members, has been established to work on a master plan.

ADMA eyes 2011 centennial
Momentum is building for the continued development of the Austin Dam Memorial Park, with a long-term goal of having things in tip-top shape by 2011.
That year marks the centennial of the flood of 1911.
Attention will be focused on the dam ruins and the community of Austin more
than at any point since the tragedy.
With state officials and Potter County leaders jumping aboard and a faithful
corps of local volunteers poised to do whatever has to be done, the stars are
aligned for big things.
The goal is to make the park an attractive destination for everyone from history buffs and curiosity-seekers to picnickers, outdoor enthusiasts and, well,
everyone – tourists and locals alike!
Over the years, Austin Dam Memorial Association (ADMA) has tackled the major challenges of land acquisition, brush-clearing, road-building and construction of a pavilion and picnic facilities. It has been accomplished almost entirely
through private donations and fund-raisers.
More recently, the challenge has turned to improving visitors’ experiences
when they arrive at the park through expansion and further development, in-

Tom Martin, Troubadour
Coudersport’s Tom Martin has packed a lot
of living into less than a half-century of life.
His occupation is that of a tree-feller and
arborist, but music is another of his passions. A singer, guitarist and songwriter,
he’s a combination balladeer and storyteller who mixes classic rock songs and even
some gospel in his own repertoire, always
with feeling. Martin years ago entertained
whoever came along as a street musician,
Coudersport-style, strumming his guitar
and singing at the courthouse square. He
left town with his guitar in one hand and a
suitcase in the other, destination unknown.
Fate would bring him back to Coudersport,
which has always been home in his heart.
Martin is often found performing for worthy
causes, with applause as the only reward
he’ll accept.
