Summer is Here! Temple Beth Or is Here!
Summer is here and our Judaism continues. Our Temple Beth Or
offerings and Jewish community connections can still fill our lives
with special and sacred moments throughout this “lazier” season.
Temple Beth Or is here to be a partner with you during the summer
(and all year round) as we experience prayer, learning, being with
each other in a community and celebrating and commemorating life’s
moments (happy and sad) together.
Summer may present a different schedule to some people, but we have
many opportunities to participate with others in various ways. Let
Shabbat be for you a day special and different from the rest of the
week. Services continue on Fridays at 7:15 PM and Saturdays at 9:15
AM with an Oneg Shabbat and Kiddush Luncheon following.
Our weekday minyan services continue every Monday, Tuesday,
Wednesday and Thursday at 6:45 PM. Come and help make the
Gala-Sounds of the Street minyan of ten (or more). The important (though sad) day of Tisha
B’Av comes on Saturday night-Sunday, July 25-26. Details are on the
Movie Festival- “Not in
flier in the Lobby and in this issue of The Vine. Help is always
This Town”
needed every week at the Thursday evening Bingo which continues
Temple Board Meeting
throughout the summer.

THE TEMPLE VINE
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Page 4
Dear Congregants,
I would like to take this opportunity to welcome our new Board of Directors. I urge you to become familiar
with all our volunteers as each member of the Board dedicates time and energy for the benefit of our community here at Temple Beth Or. As your new President I want to assure you that I will do my best to continue to
move Temple Beth Or in a positive direction into the future. Over the next two (2) years I will be reaching
out to many of you for help and guidance as I know this is not the type of job one can accomplish without the
support of everyone involved. With everyone working together to reach a common goal, I know that Temple
Beth Or will thrive.
For many years here at Temple Beth Or we have always been a caring community and welcomed everyone
and all families. With that being said and, as many of you know over the past few weeks the United States
Supreme Court has legalized same sex marriages. I am proud to announce that Temple Beth Or welcomes
same sex marriages and will now be listed in the Asbury Park Press under LGBT Welcoming Congregations
of Worship. I would like to thank Rabbi Rubin, The Ritual Committee and The Board of Directors that
helped make this possible as no one should be excluded from our house of worship. As a means to ensure that
all members of our congregation who desire to further their Jewish education can do so we will continue to
provide free adult education classes as well as, beginning for the 2015-2016 school year, tuition free Hebrew
School and Hebrew High School.
As we head into our summer months, our Gala Event for this year is fast approaching. This year our fundraising committee has done a phenomenal job in selecting a concert “Sounds of The Street” (doo wop music).
We are all looking forward to this exciting evening. I hope that you will consider becoming a benefactor,
sponsor, patron or friend to help Temple Beth Or maintain and continue to meet our goals. By meeting our
goals this enables us to provide for the religious needs of our members, continue our adult and youth educational programs and allows us to make much needed repairs while keeping our membership dues as low as
possible. Your generosity and support are greatly appreciated and I ask that you give serious thought to helping your Temple.
I want to remind you that our daily evening minyans continue through the summer, Monday through Thursday at 6:45pm. Minyan is one of the constants that can be counted on in our synagogue and sometimes we do
not realize how important something is until we need it ourselves. There is a core group of members that can
be counted to be there on a daily basis, but they cannot maintain the minyan without the help of other congregants. We run into periods where it is harder to maintain the minyan especially in the summer months when
many are on vacation. It is important that we continue to maintain the minyan so that mourners and those
with a yahrzeit to observe can fulfill the mitzvah of reciting kaddish. So I ask you, as dedicated members of
our congregation, to give your support to our daily minyan even for one day a week.
I wish you all a happy, healthy, safe and fun summer!
Warmest regards,
Jennifer Baron,
President

Rabbinic Reflections by Rabbi Robert Rubin
Continued from page 1
Enjoy “Dinner and a Movie” on three Sundays (4:00 PM movie, dinner to follow) beginning on Sunday,
July 19 with “In Our Own Hands: The Hidden Story of the Jewish Brigade in World War II” which tells
the amazing story of Jews from Palestine under the British Mandate who volunteered for the British army
to fight the Nazis, but after the war stayed in Europe to get the surviving Jews into Palestine against the
British efforts to stop them. On Sunday, August 2 watch “The Other Son” portraying two families - one
Israeli and one Palestinian - who learn that their two now 18-year-old sons were accidentally switched at
birth as babies and that each is the other family’s biological son. On Sunday, August 23 see “Not In This
Town” based on the true story in which one woman made a difference in a quiet Montana town rocked
with hatred. See the page in this issue of The Vine or the flier in the Lobby for more details. The dinner
has a charge and requires a reservation though the movie by itself has no charge.
Come and hear NJ’s popular doo wop group “The Sounds of the Street” perform here on Sunday, August
16 at 4:00 PM. Reply by July 31 with a donation above the level of General Admission and join the
dinner with the musicians and dancing following the concert. This event benefits our congregation
financially in a very significant way.
The coming High Holidays are (believe it or not) around the corner. Respond with your submissions for
the Yizkor Memorial Book (forms were already sent out).
Reach out to friends who are nonmembers and invite them to join you this summer for something at
Temple Beth Or.
Life in the summertime is just as challenging as the rest of the year, and we pray for the inner strength and
resolve to take advantage of this season’s opportunities.

August 19th - USY/Kadima - Planning meeting for upcoming year
Encampment - August 23-30th for USY/Kadima
Hello TBO,
The Youth Department at TBO is growing! After having a very successful year we have a larger
amount of kids going to Hagalil Encampment 2015, which will take place from August 23rd-30th.
For this upcoming 2015-2016 year I would like to begin a chapter based youth group for our 3rd
through 5th graders. This program will be called El Al (like the airline). This group will have an
event for themselves possibly two-three times during the year, and will be invited and included in
some of the BIG youth events. If this sounds interesting to you, and I hope it does, I invite you to a
Meet & Greet on Sunday September 20th, 2015 from 4-5pm. Both Parents and children are welcome
as we will have a Q&A about the youth groups in general. Hope to see you then.
