Catholic Education
It is by the authority of the Bishop of Cleveland that we teach the
Catholic Tradition. The ultimate goal of our school is to facilitate
the growth of Christ’s Spirit. In witness to this spirit, we minister
to one another and to the greater communities of our school, our
city, our country, and our world.
Mission In the spirit of the Gospel, we are committed to educate the whole
person to lead and to serve: enlightening the mind, developing the body,
touching the heart, and inspiring the soul.

secondary education, chartered by the State of Ohio and accredited by
the North Central Association of Secondary Schools and Colleges since

of Trustees in cooperation with the Headmaster, Chief Financial Officer,
administrative team, faculty, parents, and support organizations, and with
religious direction from the Diocese of Cleveland.

foundation of the school. The torch, symbolizing
learning, differs from traditional designs in
that it is held by two hands, one representing

Welcome
David V. Rathz
Headmaster
Tim Castrigano
Chief Financial Officer/Director of Development
Once again, St. Vincent-St. Mary High
School ended a school year with a long list of
outstanding achievements. The Class of 2009
had a total of 97 percent college bound with
96% accepted at their first-choice college.
VM09 Seniors received scholarships and grants
of more than $8 million.
Five more STVM teachers were named Ohio
Magazine Outstanding Private School Educators.
The awards our students received in the areas of science, math, and the
arts were tremendous accomplishments and I anticipate even more success
stories this year.
As we begin a new school year, I marvel at the enthusiasm of our
students. Their eagerness to compete and achieve their team and
individual goals is remarkable. What is even more impressive is the fact
that St. Vincent-St. Mary students seldom fall short of their goals. These
endeavors are of course not possible without the support of family and
friends.
I look forward to seeing our longtime STVM families and welcoming our
new families at the many events throughout the year.
As we embark on a new school year, we
know our students will continue to make us
proud in all they endeavor. Their hard work and
dedication inspires our staff, faculty and coaches
to make STVM the best it can be – for our
current students and for those who will one day
follow in their footsteps.
Our new Student Activity Center is a tangible
example of this commitment to our students.
Its construction is the culmination of the efforts
of many individuals and the generous support we have received from our
most loyal and dedicated donors. It has allowed us to increase the space
that is available in our main building for our excellent academic programs.
It also allows us to better accommodate virtually all of our students who
are involved in at least one sport, while helping to unify and beautify our
campus.
Thank you to everyone who was involved with making this wonderful
facility a reality.
Just as we encourage our students to set new goals and reach for the
stars, we must continue the tradition of excellence that is synonymous with
St. Vincent-St. Mary High School. I hope you will join me in making STVM
the very best in Catholic, college preparatory education.
Sincerely,
David V. Rathz
Go Irish!

Andy Jalwan
Athletic Director
Dear STVM Community:
Thank you for your support of the Irish athletic
program. The tradition of athletic excellence at
St. Vincent-St. Mary would not be possible
without the consistent backing of our coaches,
parents, faculty, alumni, and booster members. The
dedication of the entire STVM community provides
our student-athletes with the opportunity to wear
the green and gold proudly and victoriously on the playing field.
The sense of pride, tradition, and community is infectious at our school.
With your support, St. Vincent-St. Mary High School makes available
the opportunity for every student to participate while promoting good
sportsmanship, integrity, and performance that is consistent with our mission
and the Catholic education maintained in our classrooms. The entire athletic
department is very excited about the upcoming fall sports season. I hope to
see you at all our contests.
Go Irish!

Thank you for supporting Share The Vision
Student Activity Center
Grand Opening
Ribbon cutting ceremony scheduled for September 25, 2009 and unveiling and Dedication of THE STUDENT ACTIVITY CENTER
On Friday, September 25th, before our Homecoming Football
Game, we will celebrate the completion of our new Student
Activity Center with an official ribbon cutting ceremony and
grand opening. Our guests will also have an opportunity to tour
the new facility and witness the unveiling of the center’s name.
The completion of our Student Activity Center is significant
for several reasons.
First, it represents the fifth and final phase of our five-year, $20
million Share the Vision Capital Campaign. The construction of
this facility is a culmination of the efforts of many individuals and
the generous support we have received from our most loyal and
dedicated donors.
Second, it represents the first expansion of our building since
St. Vincent-St. Mary High School was founded in 1972. At that
time, St. Mary and St. Vincent High Schools, two of the oldest
parish high schools in Akron, merged together, as directed by
the Diocese of Cleveland, to form St. Vincent-St. Mary High
School. Today, we remain unified in our commitment to Catholic
education.
Third, it will enable us to meet the school’s strategic goals, as
set forth by our Executive Board, for growing our student body,
maintaining the highest educational standards and improving
our facilities. By providing much-needed space, it will ensure that
we are able to increase our enrollment and remain financially
viable, while benefiting each and every student who attends
St. Vincent-St. Mary High School.
security after-hours by allowing us to secure the existing building
and keep only the new gymnasium open for games and other
activities.
From Vision to Reality
As we look back on our Share the Vision Capital Campaign, we
have much to celebrate. In addition to the completion of our
Student Activity Center, we have:
• Grown our endowment to $6.7 million as of
December 31, 2008
• Completed a state-of-the-art Center for Science and
Technology and partnership with The University
of Akron
• Renovated Green Street Stadium and dedicated it as the
John Cistone Field/Green Street Stadium
• Protected our investment in our current facility by
making improvements to the heating and cooling
systems, roof and kitchen, Student Center, and adding
new lockers
Thank you to all who have shared this vision for our future.
Your support has enabled us to complete our capital campaign,
while remaining independent and self-sufficient.
Naming opportunities are still available. Contact Joanne
Zaratsian, Director of Major Gifts, for more information at

Highlights of our Student Activity Center
Our new Student Activity Center features:
• A second gymnasium with athletic offices on the
upper level
• New wrestling room, locker rooms, cheer room and
fitness center room on the lower level
• Parking
• Landscaping
By moving the wrestling room and athletic offices to this new
facility, we have increased the space that is available in our main
building for our academic programs.
Having a second gym enables us to better accommodate
virtually all of our students who are involved in at least one
sport. Previously this influx of activity made it difficult for our
teams to get adequate practice time and valuable team-building
experience. We are now able to also host more Catholic Youth
Organization (CYO) events and summer camps.
Because the facility is located between the school and the
football field, it helps to better unify our campus. It also enhances

Green & Gold Annual Appeal
Invest in the
Future of STVM
the support of our family & friends is needed
Dear Alumni and Friends,
As a member of our community, you understand the value of the
education and environment that St. Vincent-St. Mary High School
provides to its students.
Like all independent schools and colleges, our tuition never fully
covers our operating expenses. In fact, the cost to educate each child
exceeds the cost of tuition by 15%, assuming that every child pays full
tuition. When we factor in the amount of financial aid and scholarships,
we are only charging 75% of the actual cost to educate each student.
We also know that we must remain affordable for the families we are
called to serve, while sustaining our traditions of academic excellence.
Our Green & Gold Annual Appeal is more than a yearly fundraiser.
It is our lifeblood. Because we must rely on donations for every
additional penny needed to educate our students, the monies raised
through the Green & Gold Annual Appeal are critical for the day-to-day operations of
our school. These funds are put to work right away for our general operating budget,
tuition assistance and scholarships (unlike our recently concluded Share the Vision
Capital Campaign which funded capital needs like bricks and mortar and supported our
endowment).
Every gift to our Green & Gold Annual Appeal, no matter how large or small, is
important. Your support will help ensure we continue to provide the highest quality
curriculum, hire outstanding teachers and attract the best and brightest students. You
will also be making a worthy investment in the future of our school and in the future of
our children.
May God bless you and your family,
Tim Castrigano
Chief Financial Officer & Director of Development
Every gift counts! Please
consider making a modest
donation of just $1 for every
year since graduation. Your
support is vital to the success
of our school. You’ll also help
ensure that your class has
100% participation in the Green
& Gold Annual Appeal.
Calling Class Captains
We’re looking for volunteers
from each graduating class
to serve as Class Captains to
help update our database, and
ensure 100% class participation
in the Green & Gold Annual
Appeal. If you are interested or
would like more information,
please call Tim Castrigano at
330-253-9113 x142.
Donors who make an Annual Appeal gift during the Fall of 2009 will not be contacted again during our fiscal year 2009-2010.
Shamrock Society
Gifts of $1,000 or more will qualify you for membership in the Shamrock Society, a giving level and distinguished group of some of our
most dedicated donors and supporters. The members of Shamrock Society receive a gold key good for admittance to all home athletic,
theater events and band performances.

Inspiring the Soul
Coach Boarman Gives Thanks
Once again, this year, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the
St. Vincent-St. Mary community for the wonderful support that I have received.
I am humbled by your dedication and display of loyalty and I am so pleased to
have come full circle in my life by returning to my roots— St. Vincent-St. Mary
High School.
The “fire” of the Fighting Irish is very much alive, and I am so grateful to be a
part of that excitement. The feeling of tradition and pride is palpable, and it is
truly a special time in my life to be a member of the Fighting Irish.
St. Vincent-St. Mary is a unique institution, so integral to the history of
Northeastern Ohio. No high school in the area can match it in any regard. It
is a school which has produced winners, not only on the athletic field and in
academics, but also in life.
Throughout our journey together, I believe that it is important to revive
some of the traditions of the past. Therefore, following each game, we
will walk together as a team to the shrine of the Blessed Mother, to pray
together and give thanks. In doing so, we will be reminded of our faith, and
how it helps us come together as a school family. I hope that everyone in the
St. Vincent-St. Mary community will join us in prayer after each and every home
game. Working together, we will achieve success.
Dan Boarman V70
St. Vincent-St. Mary Head Football Coach
Ken McDonald Campus Minister
In his own words, Mr. McDonald says:
“God has blessed each and every one of us
so tremendously in giving us the physicality
of our being and the athletic talents we
share. That which we do with these talents
– be it on the football field, the soccer field,
the cross country course, basketball court,
bowling alley, the sidelines cheering, the
wrestling mat, baseball or softball diamond
or in track and field – is our gift to God. I
am just here to help remind our students
where their true strength comes from and to
help them strengthen their relationship with God.”
No matter what the season, the St. Vincent-St. Mary faith community
continually strives for peace, justice, sportsmanship and the creation of God’s
Kingdom.
Dear Mary,
Mother of God and patroness of the St. Vincent-St. Mary Community, give
us the desire to grow in God’s grace and love. Continue to shower us with
compassion and humility so that we may be a reflection of you. Kindly
enlighten our students with wisdom and guide us in the discernment of
our vocations. Holy Mary, Blessed Mother, shed light on the paths we walk
and brighten our journey into the future. Help us recognize the constant
presence of your loving Son Jesus and inspire us with faith to turn to Him
in our hour of need. Amen.

St. Vincent-St. Mary
Ten Years Ago…
The 1999 team was 7-5 with a win over Manchester 15-7, in the State Playoffs
and a loss to Wickliffe 15-14 in the State Regional Finals. The senior members
of the team were Keith Foster, Scott Walter, Maverick Carter, Rob Mosher, Jerry
Lowry, Russ Stouffer, Brian Mancino, Ryan Rimedio, Nate Samples, Ben Whitney,
Ben Camifax, Sean Finnerty, James Kennedy, Mike Riccardi and Dustin Thompson.
Twenty Years Ago….
Although the 1989 team posted a 5-4 win/loss record, the team was noted for
their defense which allowed 9 opponents only 83 points. Probably, the most
exciting yet heartbreaking game was the overtime loss to Massillon, 28-21. The
senior members of the team were: Joe Adolph, Jerry Arney, Brian Butash, Derrick
Carter, Jim Corrigal, Jamie Craig, Paul Ferrer, Tony Fiorello, Mike Kenny, Phil Lenz,
Paul Merlitti, Vince Palko, Jeff Palmer, Chris Petit, Harvey Richards III, Scott Sutter,
Jason Thomas, Lou Vassolotti and Lou Yovanovich.
Thirty Years Ago….
A great year as the STVM 1979 Irish team posted a fine 9-2-1 record, winning
over Youngstown East, Garfield, St. Thomas Aquinas, Cuyahoga Falls, Mentor
Lake Catholic, Canton Central Catholic, Cleveland Central Catholic and Lakewood St. Edward. STVM defeated Fostoria in the State Playoffs before losing a
heartbreaker to Ironton, 7-6 for the State Championship. Seniors included Jim
Bowen, Jim Carson, Jerry Gaydash, Dan Sutter, Jeff Shaffer, Scott Vasko, Mark
Clayton, Mitch Thomas, Tim Rickus, Kevin Wallace, Tom Buschko, Eugene Wilson,
Bob Gmerek, Ted Ley, Paul Sheeks, Brian Wells, Mike Bennett, Larry Darrow, Jim
Horrigan, Dan Houston, Tim McCafferty, Dan McGowan and Ron Ross.
Forty Years Ago…
A strong Irish team posted a 7-2-1- record during the St. Vincent High School
1969 football season in racing to wins over East, East Tech, Boardman, Walsh,
Chanel, Toledo Stritch and Hoban. Senior standouts were Warren Sharpp, Mike
Malecky, Mark DiFeo, Dan Boarman, Skip Knight Lon Johnson, Denny Daly,
Brian Lavery, Ed Jonke, Dick Pacenta, Stan Gmerek, Ed Merzweiler, Pat Lastocy,
Bill Garrett, Dan Shaughnessy, Bob Corall, John Skinner, Mike Dimoff and Dave

Fifty Years Ago…
Improving each game and finishing strong by the end of the1959 season, a big
rugged St. Vincent High School Irish team turned in a 5-4 record. Wins came over

Sixty Years Ago...
St. Mary High School: The 1949 St. Mary High School Crusaders, coached
by Harry Kidder and assisted by Ned Endress, Frank Wargo and Richard Hart,
chalked up a fine 7-1-1 record by defeating such teams as Canton Central
Catholic, Cleveland St. Joseph and Warren St. Mary.
St. Vincent High School: The 1949 St. Vincent High School football team posted
a shining 5-2-1 record for one of the better season records in the city. With
wins over Cuyahoga Falls, Kenmore, West and St. Mary High School, St. Vincent
capped their season by beating the Western Pennsylvania State Champion, Erie
Cathedral Prep with a score of 29 to 7 in the Green Street Stadium mud. Seniors
on the team were John Cistone, Gene Halamay, Dave McMullen, John Darago,
Frank Stams, Jim Horrigan, Jim Johnson, Art Hunter (who later became a Notre
Dame All-American), Bob Farnbauch, John Brady and Dick Mallo.
Seventy Years Ago…
Rolling up the first undefeated, untied (8-0) record in the school’s history, the
Irish claimed the Western Reserve League title. Key wins were over Cuyahoga
Falls, Barberton, Central and West. Seniors on the 1939 team were Fritz Graf,
Bill Dies, Leo Fimmen, Bob Smith, Dick Fraley, Bill O’Connor, Conal Craven, Jim
O’Neil, Bill Keith, Charles Lintner, Jim Mundy, Jim Smith and Sam Zeno.
Eighty Years Ago…
The 1929 Irish turned in a winning season by posting a 4-1-3 record. Strong
defensively, the “Wentzmen” (as they called themselves, in honor of Coach
Eddie Wentz) defeated Niles, St. Ignatius, Ellet and Holy Name. The only loss of
the season came at the hand of Youngstown Chaney. Seniors on the 1929 team
were Eddie Butler, Joe Sutter, Bill Kavanaugh, Jack Murphy, Bob Nist, Bob Graf,

There is no charge to STVM athletes for these services. Coach
Gary will work with the students on a program to enhance their
performance and prevent injury during the regular season, as
well as pre- and post-season. Although athletes are not required
to participate, they’ll have an opportunity to meet as a team
with Coach Gary once or twice a week to learn body weight and
stretching exercises, including variations on martial arts and yoga
techniques.
“Proper strength and conditioning training is important for
preventing injury and improving speed, agility and power,” said
Gary. “I’m happy to be able to offer this, not only to my wrestlers,
but to all athletes at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School.”
In Fall 2009 STVM Alumni, parents and family will have
access to train with Coach Gary. Coach Anthony Gary will be
offering personal training, and small group classes, focused on
fitness, flexibility, core strength, toning, stress reduction and

looking forward to working with the girls again this year.
“I am proud to coach these girls who have worked so hard. It is difficult to learn the
intricate footwork and the timing involved to perform the Irish dance steps, and they
have done a great job. I would also like to recognize and thank our Advisor,
