The merging of Akron’s first two Catholic
schools, St. Mary and St. Vincent, is portrayed
in the official crest of STVM. Featured in gold
on a green background are a cross, a torch, and
a plow and sword. The cross symbolizes the
religious foundation of the school. The torch,
symbolizing learning, differs from traditional
designs in that it is held by two hands, one
representing each school. The plow and sword
symbolize commitment to social justice and were part of the crest of
the late Bishop Clarence Issenman, who directed the formation of St.
Vincent-St. Mary High School.

St. Vincent-St. Mary High School
Catholic Education
David Rathz, Headmaster
Tom Carone, Chief Operating Officer
Once again, St. Vincent-St. Mary High
School ended a school year with a long list of
outstanding achievements. The Class of 2010
had a total of 99% college bound with 94%
accepted at their first-choice college. VM10
Seniors received scholarships and grants of $9
million.
Five more STVM teachers were named
Ohio Magazine Outstanding Private School Educators. Plus, the awards
our students received in the areas of science, math, and the arts were
tremendous accomplishments and I anticipate even more success stories
this year.
As we begin a new school year, I marvel at the enthusiasm of our
students. Their eagerness to compete and achieve their team and
individual goals is remarkable. What is even more impressive is the
fact that St. Vincent-St. Mary students seldom fall short of their goals.
These endeavors are, of course, not possible without the support of
family and friends.
I look forward to seeing our longtime STVM families and welcoming
our new families at the many events throughout the year.
As the new school year begins, the
excitement of fall sports is in the air. The
STVM Athletic Department can be proud of
the athletic programs offered which are based
on a foundation of strong Catholic values and
steeped in rich traditions.
I truly believe that our dedicated and
talented coaching staff reflects the mission of
STVM as they lead and guide our students on and off the playing fields.
The students are given the opportunity to develop their school spirit,
team unity and athleticism while maintaining their academic and faith
focus.
We view our student athletes as individuals’ first, students second
and then finally as athletes. Our Athletic Department should be
commended for the efforts taken by our coaches throughout the season
with their preparation, motivation and support of our student athletes.
Our student athletes are provided with the best opportunity to achieve
the highest athletic accomplishments while growing their faith and
striving for personal and academic excellence.
The success of a high school athletic program begins with the
academic achievement in the classroom. We will continue to focus on
the development of character, maturity and a sense of fair play of our
student athletes which has always resulted in the excellence of STVM
Athletics.
This excellence is reinforced by the support for STVM among its
constituent groups including students, fans, alumni and friends.
GO IRISH!
Sincerely,
David V. Rathz
Headmaster
Andy Jalwan, Athletic Director
Dear STVM Community:
Thank you for your continuous support
of the Irish athletic program. The tradition
of athletic excellence at St. Vincent-St. Mary
would not be possible without the backing
of our coaches, parents, faculty, alumni, and
booster members. The dedication of the entire
STVM community provides our studentathletes with the opportunity to wear the green and gold proudly and
victoriously on the playing field.
The sense of pride, tradition, and community is infectious at our
school. With your support St. Vincent-St. Mary High School makes
available the opportunity for every student to participate while
promoting good sportsmanship, integrity, and performance that is
consistent with our mission and the Catholic education maintained in
our classrooms. The entire athletic department is very excited about the
upcoming fall sports season. I hope to see you at all our contests.
Go Irish!

Green & Gold Annual Appeal
Make An Investment in
the Future of STVM
Dear Alumni and Friends,
As a member of our community, you understand the value of the
education and environment that St. Vincent-St. Mary High School
provides to its students.
Like all independent schools and colleges, our tuition never fully
covers our operating expenses. In fact, the cost to educate each
child exceeds the cost of tuition by 15%, assuming that every child
pays full tuition. When we factor in the amount of financial aid and
scholarships, we are only charging 75% of the actual cost to educate
each student.
We also know that we must remain affordable for the families
we are called to serve, while sustaining our traditions of academic
excellence.
Our Green & Gold Annual Appeal is more than a yearly
fundraiser. It is our lifeblood. Because we must rely on donations
for every additional penny needed to educate our students, the
monies raised through the Green & Gold Annual Appeal are critical
for the day-to-day operations of our school. These funds are put to
work right away for our general operating budget, tuition assistance
and scholarships (unlike our recently concluded Share the Vision
Capital Campaign which funded capital needs like bricks and mortar
and supported our endowment).
Every gift to our Green & Gold Annual Appeal, no matter how
large or small, is important. Your support will help ensure we
continue to provide the highest quality curriculum, hire outstanding
teachers and attract the best and brightest students. You will also be
making a worthy investment in the future of our school and in the
future of our children.
May God bless you and your family,
Thomas M. Carone
Chief Operating Officer

classes meet the 2010 challenge
Approximately $190,000 raised!
An all out effort was put forth from our alumni for the
2010 Green & Gold Annual Appeal! The Development
Office is grateful to all the alumni and friends who
volunteered their time to help us garner support for
this year’s important appeal. Representatives from the
past 62 years came into the school during the months of
March and April to sign and post script letters challenging
their classmates to collectively contribute towards an
$8,000 tuition. Many people used this opportunity to include reunion
information and other class news with the mailing.
Calling out to these class representatives has been gratifying. I have
found they are more than willing to help us. Their assistance and
encouragement in challenging their classmates has proven to be an
invaluable asset! Through their efforts, the Green & Gold 2010 Annual
Appeal increased the Alumni giving. Be sure to look for the class
giving lists in the next Annual Giving Report! Thank you!
This tradition is only going to get bigger and better each year. Next
year! Same time! Same Place!
God bless,
Joanne Zaratsian, Director of Major Gifts

St. Vincent-St. Mary High School
In The Spirit Of The Gospel
Coach Boarman Gives Thanks
Once again, this year, I would like to take this opportunity to
thank the St. Vincent-St. Mary community for the wonderful
support that I have received. I am humbled by your dedication and
display of loyalty and I am so pleased to have come full circle in my
life by returning to my roots— St. Vincent-St. Mary High School.
The “fire” of the Fighting Irish is very much alive, and I am so
grateful to be a part of that excitement. The feeling of tradition
and pride is palpable, and it is truly a special time in my life to be a
member of the Fighting Irish.
St. Vincent-St. Mary is a unique institution, so integral to the
history of Northeastern Ohio. No high school in the area can match
it in any regard. It is a school which has produced winners, not only
on the athletic field and in academics, but also in life.
Throughout our journey together, I believe that it is important
to revive some of the traditions of the past. Therefore, following
each game, we will walk together as a team to the shrine of the
Blessed Mother, to pray together and give thanks. In doing so, we
will be reminded of our faith, and how it helps us come together
as a school family. I hope that everyone in the St. Vincent-St. Mary
community will join us in prayer after each and every home game.
Working together, we will achieve success.
Dan Boarman V70
St. Vincent-St. Mary Head Football Coach
Ken McDonald Campus Minister
In his own words, Mr. McDonald says: “God has blessed each and every one
of us so tremendously in giving us the
physicality of our being and the athletic
talents we share. That which we do
with these talents – be it on the football
field, the soccer field, the cross country
course, golf course, basketball court,
bowling alley, the sidelines cheering, the
wrestling mat, baseball or softball diamond or in track and field – is
our gift to God. I am just here to help remind our students where
their true strength comes from and to help them strengthen their
relationship with God.” No matter what the season, the
St. Vincent-St. Mary faith community continually strives for peace,
justice, sportsmanship and the creation of God’s Kingdom.
Dear Mary,
Mother of God and patroness of the St. Vincent-St. Mary
Community, give us the desire to grow in God’s grace and love.
Continue to shower us with compassion and humility so that we
may be a reflection of you. Kindly enlighten our students with
wisdom and guide us in the discernment of our vocations. Holy
Mary, Blessed Mother, shed light on the paths we walk and brighten
our journey into the future. Help us recognize the constant
presence of your loving Son Jesus and inspire us with faith to turn
to Him in our hour of need. Amen.

Sports Medicine / Training Staff
Anthony Gary
Brian Knight is the Athletic Trainer
for the Fighting Irish sports teams.
Brian is a 1991 graduate from Stow
High School and received his degree
from Kent State University in 1996
in Athletic Training and Physical
Education.
Brian is in his 11th year as Head
Athletic Trainer for STVM. He is currently employed by Akron
General Sports Medicine and is an outside curriculum instructor
for Kent State and The University of Akron.
Brian and his wife Lisa reside in North Akron and they have
two children, T.J. and Drew.
Once again, for the 2010-2011 school year,
St. Vincent-St. Mary High School will offer
sports-specific strength and conditioning
training for all athletes. The training will be
provided by 3rd year Head Wrestling Coach
Anthony Gary, who is a personal trainer
certified by the National Strength and
Conditioning Association (NSCA) and the
American Council on Exercise (ACE).
There is no charge to STVM athletes for these services. Gary
will work with the students on a program to enhance their
performance and prevent injury during the regular season, as
well as pre- and post-season. Although athletes are not required
to participate, they’ll have an opportunity to meet as a team
with Coach Gary once or twice a week to learn body weight and
stretching exercises, including variations on martial arts and yoga
techniques.
“Proper strength and conditioning training is important for
preventing injury and improving speed, agility and power,” said
Gary. “I’m happy to be able to offer this, not only to my wrestlers,
but to all athletes at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School.”
In Fall 2010 STVM Alumni, parents and family will have access
to train with Coach Gary. Coach Anthony Gary will be offering
personal training, and small group classes, focused on fitness, flexibility, core strength, toning, stress reduction and overall
well being. For more info, please contact Coach Gary at:
[email protected].
In addition, Coach Gary developed the AWC
Akron Wrestling Club, a non-profit organization
that specializes in sports specific training and
conditioning. The club is open to all youth-high school athletes.

St. Vincent-St. Mary
Ten Years Ago…
The 2000 team won three of its last four games to finish with
four wins and six losses, however, the team consisted of mainly
underclassmen with only 11 seniors. The seniors were: Joe Bisesi,
Angelo Caponi, Lee Cotton, Matt Magaw, Fred Mathews, William
McWain, Brian Meyer, Jay Meyer, Tom Obraza, Tim Wilkes and Chris
Wooley.
Twenty Years Ago…

Fifty Years Ago…
Irish eyes were smiling as the 1960 state-ranked aggregation was
crowned District Champs and Inter-City League winners with
a sparkling 8-1 record with wins over Hoban, Canton Catholic,
Barberton, East, Central, Falls, Ravenna and Lincoln. Only loss was
to Alliance. Seniors on this outstanding team were: Tony Butowicz,
Tom Fitz, Hank Durand, Ned Endress, Jim Flynn, Dick Case, Joe
Pappano, Frank Pichichero, Dick Kouri, Tim Ede, Bob Chilson, Dick
Riley and Ben Savage.
Sixty Years Ago...
After five consecutive victories over Kenmore, East, Buchtel, Central
and Falls, the Irish were ranked 16th in the Ap State Poll. Then
came an upset by West in the Green Street mud and a loss to highly
ranked Barberton. The Irish defeated St. Mary in the season finale
for a 6-2 record…the best in the city. Seniors on this strong team
were: Russ Masturzo, Tom Hillery, Paul Baldacci, Jim Savoy, Larry
Sovacool, Paul Stuhldreher, Elmer Haddad, Larry Hamlin, Tom Gillen,
Ken Lauck and Tom Smith.
Seventy Years Ago…
A young and inexperienced Irish grid squad posted a 2-3-3 record
in the fall of 1940. The basketball team led by Joe Siegferth fared
much better in ringing up an impressive string of victories. Other
athletes of that era were: Bill Weibel, Bill Turner, Sam Bisesi, Dan
Bonner, James Allison, John Glynn, John Grinsky, Jake Harper, Bob
McKee, Pete Rehs, Bill Vielhaber, Jim Walzer, John Williams, Dick
Royer and Ed Harter..
Eighty Years Ago…
The 1930 Irish gridders counted wins over South and Holy Name
in posting a 2-7 record against opposition that included powerful
Struthers and Niles. Eddie Wentz’ cagers had a good year in
winning the Northeastern Ohio Catholic Championship with a 9-6
record. Senior footballers were: Joe Sutter, Don Tragler, Bob Nist,
Tom Lavery, John Blandin, Tom Donovan, William Siegferth and
Robert Brady.

from a 2008 Regional Semi-Final loss to Bay Village High School. The team
enjoyed an up and down season, highlighted by wins against WRA, Kidron &
Aquinas. The team rallied for a Coventry Playoff win and outstanding effort in a
double overtime 1-0 loss to Hoban. The 2010 season is full of tough challenges
and expectations for this talented team. The season will change and prepare them
for a 2010 playoff run. This year’s team has a great opportunity to reach the level
of the 2008 team that went to regionals. They will need to put in the effort but
they are a very capable and talented group of athletes.”

“The Varsity Volleyball team returns key letter
winners from the 2009 season. We competed in a
strong Summer League program in Tallmadge and
have developed a good sense of TEAM early! We
won the Elite Summer Invitational Tournament. This
bonding and strong work ethic may be the key to our
success this season as we have a nice blend of youth,
experience, size, and quickness. Our team goals are
to build on last season’s finish and continue a strong tournament run. Most
team members played in good J.O. programs. A strong work ethic, spirit, focus,
balance and sense of TEAM permeate this squad! The schedule has been beefed
up with new tournaments and the team is poised to make a stronger tournament
run.”
