ST.VINCENT-ST.MARY HIGH SCHOOL
ENLIGHTENING AND INSPIRING THROUGH CATHOLIC EDUCATION
It is by the authority of the Bishop of Cleveland that we teach the
Catholic Tradition. The ultimate goal of our school is to facilitate
the growth of Christ's Spirit. In witness to this spirit, we minister
to one another and to the greater communities of our school, our
city, our country, and our world.
STVM 2007-2008 NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARS
Mission In the spirit of the Gospel, we are committed to educate
the whole person to lead and to serve: enlightening the mind,
developing the body, touching the heart, and inspiring the soul.
Accreditation Akron's first institution for Catholic,
coeducational secondary education, chartered by the State of Ohio
and accredited by the North Central Association of Secondary
Schools and Colleges since 1950. St.Vincent-St. Mary is also
accredited by the Ohio Catholic Schools Accreditation Association.
Leadership Locally owned and controlled by an independent
Board of Trustees in cooperation with the Headmaster,
administrative team, faculty, parents, and support organizations,
and with religious direction from the Diocese of Cleveland.

The merging of Akron’s first two Catholic schools,
St. Vincent and St. Mary, is portrayed in the official
crest of STVM. Featured in gold on a green background
are a cross, a torch, and a plow and sword. The cross
symbolizes the religious foundation of the school.
The torch, symbolizing learning, differs from traditional
designs in that it is held by two hands, one representing each school. The plow and sword symbolize commitment to social justice and were part of the crest of
the late Bishop Clarence Issenman, who directed the
formation of St. Vincent-St. Mary High School.

ST.VINCENT-ST.MARY HIGH SCHOOL
WELCOME
DAVID V. RATHZ Headmaster
Once again, St. Vincent-St. Mary High School ended a school year with a long list of outstanding
achievements. The Class of 2007 had five National Merit Scholars and 97% of its membership is
continuing their education at the college level. Five STVM teachers were named Ohio Magazine
Outstanding Private School Educators. The awards our students received in the areas of science, math,
and the arts were tremendous accomplishments and I anticipate even more success stories this year.
As we begin a new school year, I marvel at the enthusiasm of our students. Their eagerness to
compete and achieve their team and individual goals is remarkable. What is even more impressive is the
fact that St. Vincent-St. Mary students seldom fall short of their goals. These endeavors are, of course,
not possible without the support of family and friends.
I look forward to seeing our longtime STVM families and welcoming our new families at the many
events throughout the year.
Sincerely,
David V. Rathz
TIM CASTRIGANO CFO/Development Director
St. Vincent-St. Mary High School has a long tradition of successful athletic programs, talented athletes and dedicated coaches. This rich tradition continues today, as a new generation of Fighting Irish
athletes and coaches proudly wear the Green and Gold. It’s no secret that this legacy of excellence
extends beyond athletics and into our classrooms. Our students are among the best and brightest in
our community and their academic accomplishments are many.
As we embark on a new school year, we know our students will continue to make us proud in all they
endeavor. Their hard work and dedication inspires our staff, faculty and coaches to make STVM the
best it can be –– for our current students and those who will follow in their footsteps. Together, with
the support of the entire STVM community, we will make a difference in the lives of these talented
young men and women. I hope you will join me in making STVM the very best in Catholic, college
preparatory education.
Go Irish!
Sincerely,
Tim Castrigano
JERRY CHASE Athletic Director
Fall sports brought many exciting moments for Irish fans in all sports. A number of our teams had
outstanding successes and many of our athletes earned individual honors. The entire
St. Vincent–St. Mary community was honored as well, earning the Sportsmanship Award from the
Football Officials’ Association. We certainly have much to be proud of and many successes to celebrate.
Congratulations go out to everyone involved in Fall sports activities!
As we enter the winter sports season, let us please remember to support all of our hard working
student athletes in all sports, especially our newest team, the Girls Varsity Swim Team. Our student
athletes work hard not only at their chosen athletic activity but also in the classroom. Let’s remember to
offer our support and encouragement by coming out to games, supporting them, and by continuing to
display good sportsmanship. Respect our opponents and officials as well as support our Fighting Irish
athletes.
Go Irish!
Sincerely,
Jerry Chase

ST.VINCENT-ST.MARY HIGH SCHOOL
THE 2007-2008 BASKETBALL SEASON IS A JOURNEY OF FAITH,
DISCIPLINE & COMMITMENT
HEAD COACH DRU JOYCE – FIGHTING IRISH BASKETBALL
Coach Dru Joyce loves basketball and appreciates the coaches that touched
his life, inspired and motivated him to become the success he is today.
Coach Joyce hopes to instill in the STVM Fighting Irish Boys Basketball team
seven (7) basic principles that he feels will make for a well-rounded student,
athlete and adult: Humility, Unity, Discipline, Thankfulness, Servanthood,
Integrity, and Passion.
Coach Dru encourages the individual, spiritual and athletic growth of his
players by reviewing these principles and inviting religious leaders and guests
such as Pastor John Saucier to meet with the team. In addition, Coach Joyce
and the STVM Boys Basketball team say a prayer before each practice and
each game.
HEAD COACH JOE JAKUBICK – LADY IRISH BASKETBALL
Coach Joe Jakubick writes….”I would like to thank the STVM community for
the opportunity to coach at this fine institution. I feel very privileged to coach
at a school that has such a rich tradition both academically and
athletically. I am also very much aware that as a coach, I have the
responsibility to assist our STVM faculty in teaching life skills to our
student-athletes.
Through our season journey, I believe it is essential for the STVM
student-athletes and coaches to reflect on their faith and how it assists us
in handling all of life’s circumstances. A tradition that we have in our girl’s
basketball program is before every home game, we visit our chapel to pray
together, give thanks, and remember those that need our prayers. This time
we share together serves as a reminder to all of us to stay focused on our
priorities in life and assists us in keeping all of our extra-curricular activities
in the proper perspective.”
IN THE SPIRIT OF
THE GOSPEL
CAMPUS MINISTER Ken McDonald
Our Lady of St. Vincent-St. Mary, Alumni Memorial Plaza
Dear Mary,
Mother of God and patroness of
the St. Vincent-St. Mary
Community, give us the desire to
grow in God's grace and love.
Continue to shower us with compassion and humility so that we
may be a reflection of you.
Kindly enlighten our students
with wisdom and guide us in the
discernment of our vocations.
Holy Mary, Blessed Mother, shed
light on the paths we walk and
brighten our journey into the future. Help us recognize the constant
presence of your loving Son Jesus and inspire us with faith to turn
to Him in our hour of need. Amen.
~ANNA WILSON, VM07
In his own words, Mr. McDonald says: “God
has blessed each and everyone of us so
tremendously in giving us the physicality of
our being and the athletic talents we share.
That which we do with these talents – be it on
the football field, the soccer field, the cross
country course, basketball court, bowling alley,
the sidelines cheering, the wrestling mat,
baseball or softball diamond or in track and
field – is our gift to God. I am just here to help remind our students
where their true strength comes from and to help them strengthen their
relationship with God.”
No matter what the season, the St. Vincent-St. Mary faith community
continually strives for peace, justice, sportsmanship and the creation of
God’s Kingdom.

DRU JOYCE Head Coach
Head Coach Dru Joyce enters his sixth year at STVM as the Head
Coach for the STVM Boys Varsity Basketball Team. Coach Joyce brings
ten years of coaching experience to the Fighting Irish Boys Basketball
program.
Coach Joyce reflects on last year…. “The STVM Boys Varsity Basketball
Team successfully reached the district finals only to lose in a heart
wrenching triple over-time game.” Coach Joyce shares his thoughts for
the upcoming season… “Even though the 2007-2008 team is very
young and inexperienced, there is exciting and promising talent. We
expect to make a strong tournament run. We will no doubt surprise a
lot of people.”
Coach Joyce and his wife reside in Fairlawn with their 4 children.

SHANNON BENDER Head Coach
Head Coach Tony Esola enters his fifth year at
STVM as the Head Coach for the STVM Boys
Baseball Team. Coach Esola has 8 years
coaching experience at STVM with a coaching
background for the past 13 years.
Coach Esola reflects on the Conference, Spring
2007 successes and the upcoming Spring
2008 season… “STVM Baseball plays in the
Cuyahoga River Baseball Conference and is the only team at STVM
that actually plays in a league. The league is divided into 2 divisions
– Big School and Small School. The Big School Division consists of
St. Ignatius,
St. Edward’s and Walsh Jesuit. The Small School Division consists of
Benedictine, University School, Gilmour Academy and STVM. Teams
play games against both divisions. Last season, STVM was the
Champions of the Small School Division and placed 5 players on the
All-Conference Team with 1 player being named Cuyahoga River
Baseball Conference’s “Rookie of the Year.”
“With 3 of those All-Conference Players returning for the 2008
Season as well as some promising underclassmen we hope to build
on last year’s successes and go deep into the State Tournament
this season.”
Coach Esola and his wife reside in Ellet with their 3 children.
TENNIS
REV. GORDON YAHNER Head Coach
Head Coach Father Yahner enters his second
year at STVM as the Head Coach for the STVM
Boys Tennis Team. Father Yahner is an avid tennis teacher and player and has 7 years coaching experience.
Father Yahner reflects on the 2007 season…
“Last year the team record was 6-3 and was
marked by a good season with strong play in the State Sectional
Tournament. Eric Juve played well in Boy’s Singles. Casey Chopko
and Gabe Pirie went undefeated in Doubles and made All-City
Doubles for Akron. STVM Boys Tennis is fortunate to have the entire
team returning this year.”
Father Yahner resides in Akron and began the 2007-2008 school
year in his new role as the STVM School Chaplain.
Head Coach Shannon Bender begins her first
year as Head Coach of the Lady Irish Softball
Team. Coach Bender is a graduate of Copley
High School as well as a graduate of Morehead

DAN LANCIANESE Head Coach
Coach Dan Lancianese enters his 14th year as
Head Coach for the Fighting Irish Track & Field
teams. Coach Lancianese’s reflects on his 27
years of coaching experience and adds these
comments……”Track is the epitome of individual
excellence. So, I always assess a season by
events rather than teams. In review of last year – STVM Boys Track &
Field - Two of our graduates earned medals at States: Diamond Hart
VM07 (110 hurdles) and David Hickey VM07 (300 hurdles). Both
also set new school records in their respective events. The men also
qualified a 4 by 200 relay team that finished 9th at States. For the
STVM Girls Track & Field - Lauren Kennerly VM08 just missed qualifying to the States on the 200 by a 100th of a second.
The coming season will be exciting for the STVM Track & Field teams.
Coach Lancianese and his wife Rita VM81 reside in Green with their
children: Angela VM99, Anthony VM00 and Dominic VM20.
