The gay LibDem Environment Leader of
Edinburgh City Council, Robert Aldridge,
has denied reports that the council
intends to restrict night-time access to
popular cruising area Calton Hill.
"While Edinburgh council is drawing up
plans for Calton Hill to preserve and
protect the area for the enjoyment of
residents and visitors, these do not
include any proposal that it should be
shut at night”, he said.

Human rights and democracy campaigner Peter Tatchell has been at the forefront
of political activism since 1967. His sometimes controversial methods of protest have
been celebrated by some and derided by others. Richard Holloway will be joining Peter
at the National Library of Scotland in Edinburgh on Tue 17th Nov at 7pm to look back
on his career and learn why he continues to put himself in harm's way.
Tickets are free and you can book online at www.nls.uk/events/index.html or

ASEXUAL GROUP
Asexual people do not experience
sexual attraction to either males or
females. It is not through fear of
intimacy, the inability to find a partner, a
disorder, frigidity, pickiness or celebacy it is a sexual orientation experienced by
approximately 600,000 people in the UK.
If you identify as asexual or simply want
to find out more about asexuality, THT
Highland would like to hear from you
with a view to starting a group.

An openly gay man who was due to
begin training to become a minister in the
Church of Scotland has abandoned his
application to “prevent further division in
the Kirk”. Former lawyer Dmitri Ross,
who is studying theology at Glasgow
University, has been in a civil partnership
for more than three years. He was put
forward by the Presbytery of Hamilton
despite a two year ban on discussing the
stance of the Kirk on homosexuality and
the induction or ordination of gay
ministers. Mr Ross claimed his
withdrawal was in the best interests of
the Kirk. “I do not wish, and have never
sought, to be a cause of division within
the Church I love so dearly. Therefore,
after much heartfelt deliberation, and
after much prayerful consideration, I
have decided to withdraw as a full-time
Candidate in Training for Ministry of
Word and Sacrament in the Church of
Scotland.”
Edinburgh is to get its own LGBT
Scottish Country Dance group, Gay
Gordons Edinburgh. There have been
Gay Gordons groups in London and
Manchester for a few years already. They
have many members and have weekly
evening dance sessions all year round, so
it is about time Scotland had its own
LGBT Scottish Country dance group. All
ages and levels of experience are
welcome, from beginners to experienced
Scottish Country dancers. Come and
experience the fun and laughter of
Scottish Country dancing, with the
freedom to dance with partners of the
same sex, in the home country of the
dances.
The first Gay Gordons Edinburgh
evening is Mon 19th Oct 7.30-9.30pm
and then every Mon for 9 weeks until
December 14th. The venue is the Quaker
Meeting House, 7 Victoria Terrace (near
Grassmarket), Edinburgh, EH1 2JL. The
cost is just £3 per session or £25 for the
first 9 week term. Gay Scottish Country
dance tutor Tim Bolton-Maggs will run
the evenings and also give tuition on how
to do the dances and steps. Don’t wait
too long - half the places are taken
already. To join in the fun, E-mail:
[email protected] or call
Turan Ali on 0131-558 1696 (office
hours). The website is

The weekend of 11th-13th
September was LGBT Youth Scotland’s
long awaited national event when LGBT
young people and their supporters came
together and took part in workshops,
games, sports activities, a glitzy awards
dinner, masked ball, and annual elections
for young people to take part in the LGBT
National Youth Council (NYC).
Young people at the event also voted
on new policy priorities for the upcoming
year and chose to focus on Equal
Marriage and Pro-Democracy and AntiFascism work.

HANDY TIP
A Day In Hand announces the first
ever international Same-sex hand holding
“Sshh! Saturday” on Sat 26th Sep. On
this day, same-sex couples and friends all
over the world are encouraged to hold
hands in public to support the visibility of
LGBT people.
Sshh! Saturdays will occur on the
last Saturday of every month, publicised
by A Day In Hand. This is a revolutionary
way of encouraging and inspiring LGBT
people to take responsibility for their
equality and live their lives without fear or
restraint. The organisers would love
people to have their photo taken holding
hands and upload it to their website at
www.adayinhand.com by E-mailing to
[email protected].
Glasgow’s artistic and gay
communities have fiercely rounded on
the city’s Gay Council Leader and the
agency in charge of the city’s museums
and galleries, branding their handling of a
major exhibition on human rights issues
facing LGBT people as “homophobic”,
“censorious”, and “underhanded and
cowardly”.
Diane Torr wrote an open letter to
Steven Purcell, Leader of Glasgow City
Council, and Bridget McConnell, Chief
Executive of Culture and Sport, Glasgow,
objecting to the censorship.
“On the one hand there is the launch
of a new late-night comedy on E4 called
Rick and Steve: the happiest gay couple
in all the world, and meanwhile at
Glasgow GoMA there is the censorship of
commissioned work by a gay filmmaker.
These films must be launched at
GoMA ... as advertised."Let Glasgow
Flourish."
The films are the work of Spanish
artist Dani Marti and address the stigma
around the issue of HIV and AIDS.

GLASGAY!
Film festival runs:
3rd Sep – 6th Oct 2009
Performance festival runs:
8th Oct – 8th Nov 2008
Under the umbrella title “Reclaiming the
Rainbow” the Glasgay festival 2009
celebrates FAMILIES and the various ways
in which we form relationships around
them. Below is a brief introduction to the
key shows and events within this year’s
events.
The festival will run in two parts in
2009. Firstly the GLASGAY! FILM FESTIVAL
from 3rd September to 6th October 2009,
which opened with the UK premiere of
SHANK, a dystopic vision of life today on the
streets of Britain where knife crime, drugs
and violence are an everyday occurrence.
Other titles include Czech teenage runaway
Jesus Queen of Heaven
SCOTLAND’S ANNUAL
CELEBRATION OF QUEER CULTURE
hit, DOLLS, French hit BABY LOVE, old style
horror in BANDAGED and gay parenting
issues Swedish-style with PATRIK 1.5.
The main Glasgay! performance Festival
gets underway from 8th Oct – 8th November
2009 at up to 14 venues across the city.
Featuring four world premieres of newly
commissioned works for theatre, the
programme is an exciting line up of top acts
and emerging talent. The commissions
include
*Jackie Kay’s THE MAW BROON
MONOLOGUES – a side splitting look at
Scotland’s favourite matriarch as a
contemporary “wummin”.
*Louise Welsh’s new play MEMORY
CELLS, a stab in the dark of cupboard love
where two characters are snared in an
underground tryst.
Dorian Grey
Maw Broon
Drew Taylor
*Martin O’Connor’s PLAYING HOUSES
– a biting look at the typical Scottish family
from hell where teenage dads, absent
fathers and the futility of family
communication takes a terrible toll on single
mothers.
*Matthew McVarish who brings us
CHILD MADE OF LOVE where we witness
two gay dads’ enduring story of hope as
they pray for adoption, surrogacy or magic.
The line up for the rest of the festival
includes a host of comedy, clubs nights, a
family Hallowe’en ceilidh, an emergent
artist’s Boutique theatre programme, and
loads of competitions and special offers to
win tickets, travel and hotel accommodation
to visit Scotland and see the wonderful city
of Glasgow.
GLASGOW
Good grief folks, can you believe its
September aka Glasgay again already????
How flaming drunk have I been this year
exactly??? The time is flying faster than
Concorde on an express route! Barely
bloody time to catch my breath long enough
to fill you in on the goings on for the next
month in this land of beers, boys, bi’s and
beans! So let’s march on forward my little
chums with the best of the very best of all
events and outings here in Glasvegas!
September and October bring us a
veritable feast of homosexual fun and
games, yes my sweets, ’tis time for Glasgay!
2009, that annual celebration of queer
culture and now in its 16th year!!! Glasgay!
brings to the Merchant City something for
every gaydo, with films, theatre, club nights,
comedy right down the slightly more “out
there” events such as Visual Art! There quite
obv being waaay to much for moi to fit into
my slender little column but never-theeeless I shall pop in some of the events that
caught my eye! Being a bit of a film buff, I’ll
start with whit’s shaking at the Glasgow Film
Theatre over Glasgay!…. they’ve got
numerous cinematic options for you but the
two that caught Miss Shivey’s eye are
“Greek Pete”(Tue 6th Oct, 6.15pm) – a
drama about a group of London rent boys
which delves into the trails and troubles of
prostitution! Another that sounds good is
“Dolls” (Sun 4th Oct, 7.45pm) – a coming
of age tale of three high school pals en
route to Holland to work for the summer,
however a little lesbionic crush is in the
mix! Something which I think will be highly
interesting is a talk by a leading figure in
the International Gay Rights movement….
Mr Peter Tatchell. He will be popping up to
give a talk at the Gallery of Modern Art
(GoMA) on Wed 28th Oct, the spaces will
be limited so it’s best to get there early
unless you fancy sitting cross legged on
the floor!!!
Shifting from that glittery silver screen
to the Theatrics…and no I’m not referring
to drunken queenie arguments outside Polo
on a Saturday night but instead the actual
Theatre! Where at the Tron Theatre they are
offering up “A Child Made of Love” (from
Tue 20th Oct, 7.45pm till Sat 24th Oct). A
story about a couple, very much loved up
and wanting child with the only problem
being that they are both men and aren’t
having much luck conceiving! If arty
theatrics isn’t really your thing then how
about a bit of Comedy with “Alan Cochrane
– Is a Daydreamer (at night)” (Mon 26th

DUNDEE
Hey guys and gals - what a busy month
I have had!
My week started with a quiet drink
before my dominoes game but, before I
could even drop my double six, I was
getting chatted up by the butchest guy in the
Stobbie!
A few birthdays celebrated this month
at The Gauger. Jen turned 31 and had a
Steps camp Karaoke theme. Barboy Jimmy
had his 50th with a 40's fancy dress theme what a fab night - Tony was dancing on the
table flashing his fishnets (what an image).
Natalie Tulloch was incredible: what an
amazing voice she has - we are hoping to
see her again. Scarlet Diamonte, as always,
pushes the envelope with her show and
everybody loves her. Loving the new look
bar thanks to my b Bubba's handy work.
(sorry, Hun – couldn’t resist).
Anniebanannie’s Karaoke is good fun
as always. Michael and Leanne did a remake of Kylie and Jason's Especially For
You. Oh the memories: Anne's efforts to get
Angie up for a song - it seems she has wee
bladder problem - get well soon babe x .
Karaoke Wed and Sun from 9pm. The Very
Miss DJ Ross made a special appearance
last Sat. DJ Ross Fri and Sat - Turning up
your weekend. Mentions this month to
Barbabes Jen and Alana, Danni, with a wee
cheeky ‘hi’ to Jay and Lisa. If you have a
comment or want a mention please get in
touch.

A Happy Birthday to Dean at Out.
There's a lot happening in Out this month
with five new plasmas dotted around the
club linked up to the main amp. A brand new
sound system has been put in and some
very cool new stage lights installed. Also
check out the new price DECREASES in the
club. Remember that Out offers a healthy
discount at the door for students: go and get
your NUS card and get down there. Live on
stage, Rachel Mcfarlane was amazing. Who
do you want to see perform at Out in the
future? You will have a choice of 10 acts for
which to vote and the act with the biggest
vote will be performing there in Nov - all
details on Out's Bebo. Sat 31st Oct will see
a Freaked Out 2009 Hallowe'en Party - I am
mentioning this early to give you plenty of
time to get a costume. As there will be cash
prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3 rd, use your
imagination. Unfortunately the Karaoke on
Thu has stopped, nevertheless the club is
still open from 10pm that night.
Here's Out’s weekly programme:

Paul and the team at Jocks Health
Club/Sauna have also had a busy month
with some new additions to the activity area
including a glory hole. Jocks also has a
partnership with Tayside Condom Initiative
- so no excuse guys. Jocks will celebrate its
1st birthday on Fri 16th Oct with a free glass
of Champagne or OJ to toast the guys and
entry will be £5 all day for members. As for
the comments about Jocks on Gaydar, don't
believe everything you hear. An exciting part
time job opportunity has become available –
all enquiries to Paul.
It’s been a quiet old month as we all
recover from Festival frolics and mayhem!!
We’ve had more than a few good weather
days last month, which has allowed beer
gardens and pavements alike to be enjoyed.
T-shirts and vests have gone a-wandering,
though in many cases I fear they should
defo have stayed on!! Now we’re into the
last quarter of the year, you just KNOW you
have to get planning those Hallowe’en
outfits and fast!!!
Finishing last month off in style, the
city’s biggest and best good old fashioned
pub quiz. Test that grey matter with now
famous quiz mistresses Siobhan and Brett!
Get to The Regent on Tue 29th Sep, for The
World Famous Regent Quiz. Official start
time is 9pm sharp, but get there from 8pm
onwards if you want to be guaranteed a
seat. Perhaps even sample some of the
Regent’s fine food fayre. And speaking of
fine food fayre, don’t forget the Regent’s
new sister venue, Café Nom de Plume, who
have a fine feast on offer whether you be
herbivore, carnivore or just plain old greedy
bastard.
Nice to see that both The Auld Hoose (a
very popular venue with bisexuals) and The
Regent are listed again in the new CAMRA
Good Beer Guide. Congratulations to all
involved!
First up this month, we have a few
treats in store for the ladies!! First off, good
clean (or not so!) fun on Fri 9th Oct, with
ladies’ night Furburger at GHQ. Check out
the Funki Diva and Dejaybird on the decks.
And don’t forget, the Burger pre-club is at
Planet, where the girls are there in all their
glory giving out free passes.
Also on Fri 9th Oct, as well as Sat 10th
Oct, fantastic lesbian comic Clare
Summerskill is appearing in concert at the
MCC. The Scottish leg of her UK tour
promises to be amazing, with a fabulous mix
of stand-up, monologues, original songs
and comedy characters. This comedy
extravaganza is by a woman described as
‘unorthodox and uninhibited’, a night where
anything goes!! Summerskill is a seasoned
performer, well known in the UK comedy
circuit as well as Radio 4, Richard and Judy
and C4!
‘Love Traffic’, GHQ’s version of a shagtag, is going strong every Tue night!!
Whether you’re green for ‘get it on’, or red
for ‘nae chance mate’, DJ Dale will be
blasting the tunes while you singles attempt
to get it on!! And to help you on your merry
way, it’s only £1 for vodka & mixers, or for
bottles of Fosters & VK!!! On top of free
entry all night - almost too good to be true!!
And as if that wasn’t enough, there’s
more cheapness in store at GHQ with ‘£1
Wednesdays’! £1 drinks, £2 for doubles,
and £1.50 for Jaegarbombs …. And if
there’s anyone out there wondering what
exactly a Jaegarbomb is, where the hell have
you been already??? Get to that bar and get
Jaegarbombing!! You may not live to tell the
tale though.
As if it was the magic figure in the
Capital city, Planet’s ‘£1 Monday Club’ is the
place to be on, well, Mon!! Cheap drinks,
hot bar staff and DJ Michelle on the decks
… what more do you want???? And then
there’s Thu, which is now the new Fri thanks
to DJ Lynny rollin’ the tunes.
Café Habana host their X Factor
extraordinaire karaoke every Wed evening,
and the funniest cabaret in town all day and
night Sun!! And don’t forget - they’re open

How would YOU like to CANCEL absolutely EVERY car
parking ticket you get? Well, YOU CAN – and it’s EASY.
Most people don’t realize that an estimated 65% of all
parking tickets issued are actually invalid.
All you have to do is point out the error, and the ticket is

BADGE OF SHAME
Born out of American evangelical Pat
Robertson’s aborted deal with the Bank of
Scotland; widely blamed on liberals and gay
activists, Stagecoach bus company multimillionaire, Brian Souter bankrolled a
campaign to prevent the Labour
administration from repealing Section 28,
(which forbade local authorities from
‘promoting’ homosexuality). He was
defeated. Since then, this member of the
Church of Nazarene has turned his attention
to the Scottish National Party (SNP) where
his money is having considerably more
success.
£500,000 of Souter’s money helped
Alex Salmond become Scotland’s First
Minister by one vote.
Brian Souter’s so-called ‘referendum’ on
the repeal of Section 28 disenfranchised
young people and students who were more
likely to change address, by using an out-ofdate electoral register. With fewer young
people bothering to vote and with the coordinated action of churches at election
time, Alex Salmond must know that his
religious MSPs stand a very good chance of
being elected. However, Salmond’s
encouragement of MSPs to wear their
religion on their sleeve is something I think
he might already be coming to regret.
Alex Salmond not only ‘does religion’,
he chastises those like Tony Blair for
remaining quiet about it. Salmond confesses
that religion is the driving force in his
thinking and seeks to accommodate Catholic
thinking on every level, supporting (like the
English Tories) more sectarian or ‘faith’
schools and lobbying Whitehall for Catholic
adoption agencies to be given an ‘indefinite’
exemption from legislation on gay adoption
(special exemptions administered, of
course, at our expense).
After hiding in the seams of political
parties’ frocks, proselytising through
religious friends in the Scottish media or
interrupting the morning news with a ‘moral’

FREE TO SAY SO
Religion and the SNP
message, religion is climbing in bed with the
SNP.
Since gaining power, Alex Salmond
snubbed a debate on gay equality which was
attended by all Scottish political parties,
even the Tories. When the Equality Network
wrote to the SNP’s deputy leader, Nicola
Sturgeon imploring her to answer if they
were in favour of equality; she didn’t
respond. Alex Salmond is a consummate
politician and has trumpeted his belief that
the matter of abortion - some nine times
higher than in the Netherlands where
religionists have been unable to stall
progressive sex education - should be left to
the conscience of MPs. But when the party
is spilling over with religionists, Salmond
and his religious cronies surely know; their
agendas are safely in the bag.
As a member of Easterhouse Baptist
Church, the SNP proudly chalked up another
outspoken religionist to its ranks at the
Glasgow East by-election in 2008. Won by
John Mason for the SNP, he thanked
everyone “who prayed for him”. Later that
year, the SNP were not so lucky. The byelection in Glenrothes was lost to Labour
despite 70-year-old Cardinal Keith O’Brien
writing letters to be read out in the
constituency’s three Catholic parishes in
support of Peter Grant who stood for the
SNP.
In 2009, in the forthcoming by-election
in Glasgow’s North East, former BBC
journalist David Kerr was selected to stand
for the SNP. Kerr admits he is a member of
the controversial Catholic sect: Opus Dei.
Labour’s so-called ‘equality minister’, Ruth
Kelly was also a member of Opus Dei;
refusing to give support to Government
legislation on gay and abortion rights. She
would also absent herself from the chamber
when votes on these issues ever came up.
Catholic SNP MSP Roseanne
Cunningham has railed against steps to
allow gay people to adopt and Catholic SNP
minister Fergus Ewing held private talks with
Brian Souter’s charity, the Souter Charitable
Trust (STC) - whose declared aim is “the
advancement of religion” - to discuss a
return to the discredited, pro-abstinence
drug policy similar to one promoted by
Souter’s ‘Keep the Clause’s’ David Macauley,
only this time Souter’s charity proposed the
administration of neuro-electric therapy –
sending an electric current to the brain - to
addicts, a controversial treatment developed
in the sixties by Scottish neurosurgeon, Dr
Meg Patterson.
Has helping the pious SNP into power
reaped benefits for Brian Souter? After a
lavish, taxpayer-funded reception for SNP
supporters attended by Souter and his
friend, Sir Tom Hunter - a wealthy sponsor
of Souter’s glorified opinion poll on Section
28 - the SNP quickly dropped its resolution
to do away with bus de-regulation and faced
chastisement for not putting out to tender
plans to offer a hovercraft service across the
Firth of Forth. Stagecoach had looked likely
to benefit, seeking £3.3m of funding until
the service became profitable.
After rightly or wrongly releasing on
compassionate grounds the man convicted
of the Lockerbie bombing, Abdulbaset Ali alMegrahi, Kenny MacAskill, Scotland’s
Justice Secretary announced that al-Megrahi
was already suffering under a sentence
“imposed by a higher power”. So now you
have it from a Justice Secretary: Cancer is a
punishment from God! Against a tide of
international condemnation, his
controversial action was backed by the
Catholic Church and the Church of Scotland
before the morning news was interrupted by
the Church’s propaganda machine, Thought
for the Day, in his support.
Despite research linking homophobia
with homosexuality and the continuous
exposure of sexual aberrations amongst
their numbers, religious militants continue
to pour time, money and energy into
blocking the progression of gay equality. It’s
taken privileged access to the political
process to properly indulge their obsession.
But since 9/11, the protests of sexual
minorities are joining an ever-growing
clamour from the ‘silent majority’ of
secularists, humanists, agnostics, atheists,
religionists and people of no religion at all
who are bravely standing up to ask some
very pertinent questions… Why should
clerics cream £42m a year off of a cashtrapped NHS? Why do we cough up £10m a
year for religious services on the BBC? Why
do religionists need their own courts? Why
do we need church-run schools, old folks’
homes and other essential services? And
why, when they assure us they are just
peace-loving, ecumenical organisations with
common values do we need to pump so
much money into ‘Interfaith’ initiatives to
sort out their squabbles?
Religionists will undoubtedly accuse
me, as a writer of ‘militant secularism’ and
‘intolerance’ toward religion. On the
contrary, I simply despise religious privilege,
and, as a secularist, defend my right to
criticise religion; something guaranteed to
arch the back of religionists. Such a
response was evident when a senior SNP
councillor in the Borders and Nationalist
constituency party chairman, Kenneth Gunn
exposed his ‘beliefs’ during a BBC Radio
Scotland phone-in when he was asked why
non-believers should have to treat the Bible
with reverence. He confessed, “Well, nonbelievers are damned to Hell anyway, so why
should we bother?” Presenter, Graham
Stewart suggested he might “live alongside
other people and have mutual respect”, but
he was having none of it, “No, I don’t think
so”, he gushed. “When we all went to
church on a Sunday morning and we all
prayed to the Lord Jesus Christ every
Sunday morning, this was a much better
country. Look where it is going now. We
have got so-called gays who are really very
sad people and we have non-believers and
heathens, you know, running the country
and running down Christianity. It seems
that, you know, it’s offensive to run down
Islam, but it’s not an offence to run down
Christianity. This is supposed to be a
Christian country”. The SNP were quick only
to dismiss his remarks as ‘personal’.
Following behind-the-scenes talks with
Catholic leaders, and at a lecture in the
name of Alex Salmond’s close friend,
Scotland’s most notorious homophobe, the
late Cardinal Winning, Salmond unveiled his
vision of what appeared to some as a new
theocratic Scotland, attacking opponents of
sectarian schools, warning them “it is time
for that attitude to be finished in Scottish
society”. He promised “unswerving support”
for more “faith” schools. Instead of
addressing a resistance to tackle
homophobia in Catholic education, Salmond
lectured the rest of us to accept sectarian
education and “celebrate – not just tolerate
– diversity and distinctiveness within our
education system”. Writing in the Scottish
Catholic Observer, he went on to promise
the Catholic Church he would do all he could
to secure them exemptions from
equality legislation – already passed
by Parliament into law - that some
Catholics saw as forcing them to
treat gays equally in their quest to
become prospective parents in
publicly-funded, Catholic adoption
agencies.
Then, in a deal struck between
the Church and health and education
officials, a vaccine against cervical
cancer for schoolgirls – caused by
the human papilloma virus (HPV),
passed on during sex - was to be
administered without any
accompanying safer sex advice that
made it clear condoms offered
protection against other sexually
transmitted diseases. In addition,
the mention of condoms was to be
removed from leaflets going out to
all Scottish schools, even nondenominational ones! Even Scotland
on Sunday was rattled: “Alex
Salmond’s administration should
take particular care in matters such
as these, given that the SNP’s
biggest donor is a man well known
for his conservative views on sexual

education in schools. The health of
Scotland’s young people is too important to
be the subject of any horsetrading”. And
they should know! Under a former editor,
the broadsheet was a vociferous supporter
of the ‘Keep the Clause’ campaign.
After his meeting of Muslim leaders at
Bute House and in a nod to demands for
separate schools for Muslims, Salmond
promised, “My advocacy for faith-based
education extends beyond Catholic
schools”. Divisions amongst Muslims, the
treatment of women, forced marriages,
female circumcision were all conveniently
brushed under the carpet in the SNP
stampede toward religious solidarity. In
2008, Salmond awarded £215,000 in public
funds to the Scottish Islamic Foundation
(SIF); a company the SNP helped set up and
led by Osama Saeed, the SNP’s religious
parliamentary candidate for the Glasgow
Central constituency who was campaigning
to secure the support of its large Muslim
population. The organisation also included
other SNP activists and members of Saeed’s
family. Osama Saeed had been heavily
criticised for urging Dundee’s Muslim
community not to co-operate with Tayside
Police’s Special Branch community contact
unit and for supporting the restoration of an
Islamic Caliphate, which would absorb
existing states around the world into a
Shari’a “superstate”. Saeed was also a
strong supporter of separate Muslim
schools. Most of the SNP’s funding was
earmarked for an IslamFest in Glasgow. SIF
later received a further £190,000 from the
Race, Religion and Refugee Integration Fund
(RRRI) which supported organisations
assisting ethnic minority communities
despite being the only one of 33
organisations that was neither a company
nor charity at the time they applied for
funding.
Osama Saeed not only promotes the
homophobic ex-gay Muslim group The
StraightWay Foundation but posted on his
blog a recommendation for an anti-gay blog:
Eye on Gay Muslims. Against sound
professional advice, the site says, “You
cannot justify homosexual activity in the
light of divine revelation, and no doubt it is
all sinful. Understand Islam properly, realise
that even the identity of being ‘gay’ is
problematic and un-Islamic, and repent to
Allah, who is Forgiving, Merciful”. None of
this has deterred the SNP from offering
Saeed the opportunity to contest the
Glasgow Central seat in the next General
Election.
Along with funding for SIF, in July 2008
alone, the SNP-controlled government had
awarded £100,000 for Connecting and
Empowering Communities run by Glasgow’s
Scottish Council of Jewish Communities;
£130,000 for the Festival of Spirituality and
Peace organised by the Church of St John
the Evangelist in Edinburgh; £130,000 for
Edinburgh Interfaith
Association’s Interfaith
Souter Development Project and
£190,000 for Glasgow’s
Youth Community Support
Agency for its Faith
Exploration Services.
If not state-funding
Islamic festivals,
foundations and education,
the SNP have given their
tacit support to Shari’a
courts, Halal meat
preparation and courted
theocratic countries in the
Middle East for funding.
We haven’t elected
any of the clerics that sit in
the House of Lords as of
right. (No other Western
democracy would permit
it). Neither do the majority
of us want religionists
running our schools,
welfare services or shaping
our laws. But it looks like
we are going to get them
anyway, doesn’t it?

THE FINAL RING...
A charity phone line which has helped
thousands of people over more than three
decades will take its final call later this year.
Lothian Gay and Lesbian Switchboard
(LGLS), which has been in operation for
over 35 years, will close on Sun 1st Nov
2009 with its telephone service taking last
calls on Fri 30th Oct 2009.
The LGBT community in Edinburgh and
the Lothians has changed significantly in the
past 35 years and, fortunately, several other
agencies have joined LGLS on the scene to
provide much needed support in the areas
of sexual health, mental health, emotional
support and community building. LGLS
welcomes this growth of the LGBT sector in
the Lothians and has been proud to be a
part of it. The growing popularity of the
Internet which, for many, has become the
first point of call for factual information
about the LGBT community and venues, has
also meant that the role of an organisation
such as LGLS, mainly providing support and
information over the telephone, has
diminished.
Organisers say there has been a fall in
volunteers, but add that calls have also
tailed off over the past 12 months. This is a
positive sign that people are more aware
and tolerant about gay issues than it was
when the Switchboard began in 1974.
The Switchboard operated two
telephone lines, main line and lesbian line as
well as an Icebreakers social group. Both
helplines were popular, particularly at the
weekend and trained volunteers offered a
listening ear, advice and a befriending
service for isolated callers. Starting at a
volunteer’s flat, the helpline has always been
a source of advice and support. Volunteers
were on hand to help with all manner of
enquiries. In the early days where there was
no other help, the service provided real
support in terms of information, sexual
health promotion, sexual identity,
relationships, coming out and above all, this
was confidential.
Icebreakers has also proved to be an
enormously popular service in a relaxed and
non confrontational environment. The final
Icebreakers will be held on Wed 28th Oct
and organisers would love to see past and
present Icebreaker attendees, volunteers
and well-wishers at the usual time and
place.
Volunteers, past and present will be ‘all
hands on deck‘ at their final social event to
celebrate the successes of LGLS. These
events have been running twice yearly since
the mid ‘90s and have been very popular,
many selling out weeks before the event.
Themed nights such as The Glam Ball,
Valentine’s Ball, Tartan Fling, Hoedown,
Snow Ball, Rio Carnival, Swinging 60s,
Cupid’s Ball and Saints and Sinners proved
to be a huge hit in the yearly social calendar
and we hope that the Final Fling will be the
best ever.
Hoist up your sails and get aboard on
Sat 31st Oct at the Assembly Rooms,
George Street, Edinburgh for the Final Fling.
An evening of nautical naughtiness and
seafarin’ shenanigans on the high seas
awaits you.
More information about the closure of
Lothian Gay and Lesbian Switchboard can
be found at www.lgls.co.uk
“The first switchboard operators were teenage boys, who often
engaged in horseplay and foul language.
Telephone companies soon began hiring ‘girls’, in order to
present a more genteel image to customers”. c. 1877

Looking For Casual
Relaxing Fun With Younger
Guy(s)
Just looking for fun with
guy(s) aged 16-26 - probably
at my place in Central Edinburgh. Nothing complicated:
love not required although
mutual respect is a must.
One off is good, so is longer
term fuck buddy. I'm mostly
active but can be versatile if
that's what really works for
you. Safer fun only - no barebacking. And a kiss or cuddle
can be just as good as (or
better than) anything else so there are a lot of options.
What have you got to lose by
replying and seeing if our
needs/desires are compatible? Other than your virginity
which is soon gone with this
poof! Box SG94004.
Sporty Prisoner Seeks Guys
33 year old prisoner looking

Ginger Minger Seeks
Young, Smooth Guy
Small (5'6"), fat (15st), old
(52), balding red hair and
beard, very hairy body, looking for fun and friendship
with young (16-22) guy. You:
No piercings (self mutilation
is not good or clever), preferably a full head of hair (no
shaved heads - why do you
want to be bald at your
age?), smooth chest (shaved
is good, naturally smooth is
better), no facial hair, not
anorexic (I like a bit of plump
- although slim is OK). I'm
probably far too picky - but
then I bet most suitable guys
are too! I can accommodate
(Edinburgh) or will travel.
