Report on Science Academies’ Lecture Workshop on “Spectroscopy and Its Applications” during January 27 27-28, 2015 Organized by Department of Chemistry Loyola College Nungambakkam, Chennai – 600 034 Tamil Nadu, India Dr. M. Jaccob Dr. S. Umapathy Convener of the Workshop Coordinator of the Workshop Assistant Professor Department of Inorganic and Physical Chemistry Department of Chemistry Indian Institute of Science Loyola College, Chennai – 600 034 Bangalore - 560 012 Brief report of the Science Academies Lecture Lecture-workshop on “Spectroscopy and Its Applications”: A two day Science Academies Lecture Workshop was held in Loyola College, Nungambakkam, Chennai – 600 034 on “Spectroscopy and Its Applications” on 27 – 28th January, 2015. 5. The Lecture Workshop was organized by Department of chemistry, Loyola College in association with Science Academies Academies’ especially Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore under the leadership of Prof. S. Umapathy, Department of Inorganic and Physical Chemistry, Indian Institute of Science as Convener and Dr. M. Jaccob, Assistant Professor, DST INSPIRE Faculty and Young Scientist as Coordinator. Inaugural Function (Left to Right – Mr. Richard (Loyola College), Prof. S. Vincent (Loyola College), Prof. S. Umapathy (Convener (Convener-LWS, IPC-IISC, IISC, Bangalore), Rev. Dr. G. Joseph Antony Samy SJ (Principal, Loyola College), Dr. M. Jaccob (Coordinator (Coordinator-LWS, LWS, Loyola College) The theme eme of this Science Academies’ lecture lecture-workshop was “Spectroscopy Spectroscopy and Its Applications”, ”, a highly inter/multidisciplinary topic of contemporary research interests among various scientific disciplines ranging from chemistry, biology, materials, theoretical physics/chemistry etc. It is well known that sspectroscopic methods provide a wealth of information, not only about the energy levels of a molecule but also about molecular mo structure and bonding as well as it provides an excellent finger print for the molec molecular ular systems, thereby making spectroscopy a particularly important means of studying molecular systems. This workshop was intended mainly for the local students and college teachers of this region. Prominent teachers/scientists were invited to deliver lectures on the basic and contemporary aspects of various techniques of spectroscopy such as vibrational, nuclear magnetic resonance, Laser Raman, and fluorescence methods. Welcome Address by Dr. S. Vincent, Dean of Research and Felicitation address by Rev. Fr. Principal, Loyola College. So the workshop was envisioned to make basic spectroscopic concepts clear to them and expose them to the vast possibilities of research in this multidisciplinary field and has been organized in Loyola College, Chennai. A total of 8 lectures (each of the 4 resource persons gave 2 lectures on each day) of 90 minutes duration were delivered by the four well-known Indian scientists/teachers covering the fundamental aspects and applications of various spectroscopic techniques in this Science Academies’ lecture-workshop. About 130 participants (faculty, Research Scholars and PG students) were actively present in this two days’ event. There were altogether 8 lectures delivered by the following: (i) Prof. S. Umapathy, Department of Inorganic and Physical chemistry, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore (ii) Prof. Anunay Samanta, Department of Chemistry, University of Hyderabad, Hyderabad (iii) Prof. Mangala Sunder Krishnan, Department of Chemistry, Indian Institute of Technology Madras, Chennai (iv) Prof. B. Rajakumar, Department of Chemistry, Indian Institute of Technology Madras, Chennai Two day Science Academies’ Lecture workshop was inaugurated on 27th January 2015 at 9.30 AM in Lawrence Sundaram Hall, Loyola College, Chennai. Dr. S. Vincent, Dean of Research, (Associate Professor, Department of Advanced Zoology and Biotechnology, Loyola College) welcomed the participants and the resource persons from various colleges in and around Chennai. Rev. Dr. G. Joseph Antony Samy, SJ felicitated the gathering. Prof. S. Umapathy, Convener-LWS, (Professor, Department of Inorganic and Physical Chemistry, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore) delivered the inaugural address with aiming to address the various activities of Science Academies’ in India. He appreciated the various initiatives of Science Education Panel of Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore such as summer student and teacher’s scholarships, refresher programmes, lecture workshops and Journal publications etc. The post graduate students, PhD scholars, faculty members of the physics and chemistry department and neighboring colleges in and around Chennai were largely benefited by this program. Prof. S. Umapathy delivered inaugural and concluding lectures on laser spectroscopy. Especially, he explained the basic concepts of Femtosecond Stimulated Raman Spectroscopy (FSRS) and Time Resolved Resonance Raman Spectroscopy (TRRRS). Interaction of Participants with Prof. S. Umapathy Prof. Anunay Samanta, Department of Chemistry, University of Hyderabad described the fundamentals and some applications of fluorescence spectroscopy. Then he showed how for fluorescence spectroscopy useful on the study of short-lived species, electronically excited molecules and photochemical transients. Prof. B. Rajakumar, Department of Chemistry, IITM discussed the application of cavity ring down spectroscopy on atmospheric chemistry and how for spectroscopic methods useful in studying the kinetic aspects of gas phase reactions. Lectures delivered by Four Eminent Resource Persons (Left to Right, Prof. S. Umapathy IISc Bangalore, Prof. Mangala Sunder Krishnan, IIT-Madras, Prof. Anunay Samanta, University of Hyderabad, Prof. B. Rajakumar, IIT-Madras) The third and fourth session of second day 28 January, 2015 was started by Prof. Mangala Sunder Krishnan, Department of Chemistry, IITM. He explained the role of modern theories to explain the basic concepts of molecular vibrational spectroscopy. His second talk mainly focused on the Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (NMR). The participants took note of each lecture. Questions and free - ranging discussions invariably spilled over into the breaks between lectures and beyond the end of the evening session. In the valedictory program, the participants especially the young delegates expressed their happiness and expressed their views. They appreciated the coordinator and mentioned that the workshop was well organized, lectures were very interesting, the hospitality was wonderful, and they (convener, resource persons and participants) suggested the department of chemistry, Loyola College, Chennai to conduct many more workshops like this in future with the overwhelming support and sponsor by Joint Science Education Panel of the Academy. Vote of thanks by Workshop Coordinator Dr. M. Jaccob, Department of Chemistry, Loyola College and Participants Some faculties who participated in the workshop also showed their interest to organizing similar kind of workshops in their colleges. . Prof. S. Umapathy, Convener-LWS expressed the concluding remarks and motivated the students to pursue their higher studies and research in physics and chemistry. Dr. M. Jaccob, Coordinator-LWS delivered the vote of thanks and he appreciated the financial support and suggestions by science academies for conducting such a grand and successful workshop Number of Participants who attended the workshop including the names of colleges and Institutions: (Invitation letter with brochures have been sent to 35 colleges/universities in around Chennai. All the invitation letters are sent by speed post.
