The Ninth Symphony is a work that tests the
condition of your heart. I sometimes even pray to
Beethoven.
"Being a conductor for thirty years, I've conducted the
Ninth Symphony more than 350 times and I think that
this is something that tests the condition of ones heart.
I get very exhausted and sometimes I even pray to
Beethoven by feeling anxious. The performance of the
Ninth Symphony differs every time. The Ninth Symphony
changes by the concert hall and by the enthusiasm of
the audience.
When I am face to face with the Ninth Symphony, I
sometimes have caught up by a sensation of a huge
shinning ring standing in front of me, and feel like I have
heard the energy of this universe. But the moment we
finish performing, we always realize that we have never
heard Beethoven's voice. That desire of wanting to hear
Beethoven's voice is my motivation to keep me going and
to perfect my performance. Seeking for that "something"
other than technique resulted the number 350 times.
Musical performance is an expression of infinite
thoughts just like Romain Rolland.
"I strongly believe that if Romain Rolland hadn't heard the Ninth Symphony, he wouldn't be
able to create "Jean Christophe". I think the outrageous writing he spins out from the heart,
were inspired by the Ninth Symphony. The Ninth Symphony is like an inexhaustible spring, it
touches people's heart. For example Richard Wagner once said "If I hadn't heard the Ninth
Symphony, I wouldn't of become a musician." Also Mahler used to transcribe the score of the
Ninth Symphony.
I myself was too very much moved when I listened to the Ninth Symphony for the first time at
fourth grade. I used to creep in to the school hall and would play an impromptu or play the
record and read the score of the Ninth Symphony in the moonlight. I didn't know the way of
composing that time, but I used to study with the scores of the Ninth Symphony. I would say
it's my roots.
My strong desire of wanting to be a musician was at first opposed by my father. He finally
agreed when I was in my eighth grade when my work was introduced in NHK. In the funeral
address of my father's death, I knew for the first time that he too was aspiring to be a
musician when he was young. I realized that his objection was from his parental feeling
knowing that to become a musician is not easy. There for I still have strong feelings to my
father.
The glimpse of sensation, applauses from the audiences sounded like an
earthquake.
"The most impressing experience of palpable sensation was the Ninth Symphony with the
Amsterdam Concertgebouw. It was twenty years ago. When four soloists appeared, I realized
that the tenor singer wasn't there. When I told the audience " I cannot perform today",
everybody stood up and said " No problem. Get on with it." I had to sing the tenor part
myself. The strong passion of not miss-hearing the crowning work, made the audience this
overwhelming. At the finale of that day, the applause from the audience was like a sound of
an earthquake. It was my first experience.
A good concert must have the aura that the audience indulges and also the orchestra must
have the aura to be able to provide that. Music is something that the performer, conductor,
and the audience create together. That day was a great example. The reason why I put the
ensemble on stage from the first movement of the Ninth Symphony is that to let them share
the atmosphere and to integrate with them.
I'll give my full effort for at least three years as the director of Japan Philharmonic
Orchestra.
"In fact I've been the kapellmeister for Japan Philharmonic till now so I have been working
with them for quite a while. The entire orchestra is enthusiastic like a family-like community
with reflections of characters. They try as hard as possible to impress the audience's heart
and even though they are burnout, they always show their spirit in sending comfort and
healing. I really think it is a tremendous way of life.
With these splendid people, I'll work hard for at least three years as the music director. I
don't mind holding new series like "Kobaken Dream Concert". I would also like to hold a
concert with audience close to us, so that we can both perform music, songs and
communicate since I like to be close to the audience. I hope that efforts like this will interest
more sponsors.
We will be asking much cooperation by the Tokyo International Forum too. It takes time for a
hall to get mellow. To become a prestigious hall like The Gewandhaus, I want the Tokyo
International Forum to take the effort to become a good hall.

been performed many times.
For this time, there are some refurnishes of being even more musical and entertaining.

musical star Akihiro Nakagawa.

Exchanges between the conductor and

communications. It has now taken root as
a place of sharing the joy of music.
The event where you can take a close
look at the conductor and learn the
pleasure of classic music. "Maestro
Salon" being its 50th time
The Japan Philharmonic Orchestra
Managing Director
Shuhei Deguchi
"The Maestro Salon" where people have
chance to hear from invited conductors, is
held by the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra
regularly at the Tokyo International Forum. On the 50th time, we asked Mr. Deguchi who
says that the location condition was the biggest factor to be able to hold this series so
long, some retrospectives of "Maestro Salon".
"The Japan Philharmonic Orchestra" has practiced to communicate with the audience from
an early stage as an orchestra that lives together with the citizens over the theme human,
music and nature. "The Maestro Salon" is an event where the conductor explains the hints
of enjoying regular concerts with that given theme. The first event was in March 1999 by
Guenter Herbig, the music director of the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra. Since then this
event has taken root as a place where people can feel the experiences and characters of
the conductors, to learn the interesting stories of the tune, and to share the joy of music.
There are many regular fans.
The maestros show different expressions in front of tens of people from when they are
conducting in front of hundred and thousands in concerts. The salon style with tea and
cakes makes a heart-to-heart-communication atmosphere. That is the most allurement of
this event.
The orchestra members and other participant do the running of this event and not
professionals. It is presided over our violist Toyoji Arai. He is now well known as the face of
this salon. As being a performer himself, he knows and brings out the character of the
maestros from his own point of view, which is his outstanding gift.
One of the most interesting stories was by Mr. Tadaaki Odaka. It was a story of his
experience in a performance at the Nippon Conductors Association. The performance was
a difficult one with many modern tunes when Kazuo Yamada was on harps and Mr. Odaka
on second violin. Mr. Odaka asked Mr.Yamada in the middle of the performance "Which part
of the score are we playing now?" and then Mr. Yamada asked back "Which tune is this?"
This story turned out to be a burst of laughter. To be able listen to these humane sides of
great maestros is the aspect of this event.
Of cause not all maestros were good at talking since their originality are shown on the
stage. But even maestros that said they were not enthusiastic about this salon turned out
to say "It was tiring but I had a great time". These words were indeed a pleasure for us.
50th time is still a passing point. This "Maestro Salon" is an event we are going to continue
even though they might be changes. It is also happy for us to be able to hold this event in
such a convenient location like the Tokyo International Forum where we can transmit
information effectively to the business people in the Marunouchi region. We will like to
expect those in their 30's and 40's who are busy raising their child and has distance from
concerts. We want this event to free peoples mind with an easy pop in after work.
The Japan Philharmonic Orchestra is making maximum efforts to broaden the access to the
Orchestra such as "Forest of Music project" which is a name of various outreach programs
like senior instrumental workshops and the orchestra adventure courses. We are seeking
for more new ideas. We hope we can make close contact with the Tokyo International
Forum. With the "Maestro Salon" please look forward to the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra."

Thanks to the location and well found
environment, we were able to hold a new
urban style antique fair.
"The Oedo Antique Fair" held every
3rd Sunday at the Plaza of Tokyo
International Forum
The Oedo Antique Fair Secretariat
Med Issue Co.,Ltd
Kanako Asano
"The Oedo Antique Fair started from last year with the idea of wanting to entrench a new
style of urban antique fair and of the activation of the Marunouchi area. Up to now, antique
fairs were mainly held in shrines and the customers were those who had specific purposes.
We wanted to hold a totally new style of antique fair so that more people can casually come
and enjoy the antiques. Since it was the 400th anniversary of the Edo Shogunate last year,
we aimed it to be like a lively fair like the town of Edo in the past ages. The area selection
was a major issue. We needed a location that was suitable for this new antique fair, in a
place that represents Tokyo. The Tokyo International Forum was just the location. Access
from the station, being close to shopping areas, well equipped, it was the most suitable
site.
The exhibitors are around 200 with Japanese ceramic, western artillery, obi and kimonos,
accessories and many more. Surrounded by the urban atmosphere with art works and
trees, people say that the plaza is like an antique fair somewhere in Europe.
Most customers are the young, mistress, married couples that popped by after their
shopping at Ginza or Marunouchi. Unexpected were those who came to the Forum for
different reasons. They take a look before or after their visits. It created a multiplier effect.
This was a very pleasing effect.
There are many conversations between the people who came for the first time and the
exhibitors, and also between the exhibitors themselves exchanging information, so it is very
much a lively site. We believe that this is because of the location being in the heart of
Tokyo.
We hope that this event "Oedo Antique Fair" becomes a big festival that everybody knows.
We want the customers and exhibitors to enjoy this fair even more.

a festival.
The Tokyo International Forum has been working
since last July, to create a more friendly facility
starting from the renovation of the signboards. As
a part of that project, we have installed an art
panel of "toward FORUM" close to the entrance of
the imperial palace side.
The art panel "toward FORUM" is a message from
Tokyo International Forum with wishes that more
people come and enjoy. Please come and take a
look after during your break times or when youユre
shopping as well as after events and concerts.

The PIA Corporation known as the pathfinder of
informational magazines and has recently been listed on the
first section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange, held a event last
October called the "PIA appreciation gathering" celebrating
its 30th anniversary. President Toriumi was invited among
leaders of those from publishing and other entertainment
fields that "PIA" had worked with in these thirty years. "PIA"
also introduced their new service "Electronic ticket and
Electronic coupons". It gathered great attention by event
business fields that are involved in ticketing.
"Neo-Yatai" a food court opened in the plaza of Tokyo International Forum where
is crowed with people coming for lunch and a cup of coffee.
At lunchtime, an appetizing smell fills the art filled plaza where people
gather as a resting spot. Many vans with variety of foods and drinks
gather to open their stalls and the "Neo-Yatai" is ready to begin.
"I think it is a good model case of collaboration with both characters
of the Tokyo International Forum and the stalls wanting to use the
plaza more variedly." Says Karasugawa from "Work store Tokyo do"
who is the coordinator of this food court.
8 stores that change every day come to open the stalls with unique
food menus, coffee and dessert like Asian cuisine, steaks, and curry. The most popular are
"Asian Lunch" where they serve Korean and Thai foods and "Deli Demina" where they serve
Hawaiian plates "Loco moco". Both stores provide varieties of daily with price ranges of ¥550
¥600 ¥650 according to the number of dishes you take. "Many people say that it's the same
taste they ate in Thailand.モ says the staff of "Asian Lunch". "We are well caught because the
customers can actually see and choose what they want." Says the staff of "Deli-Demina".
●We asked some of those who were at the food court
"I like the Asian Lunch. I like hot food so today I'll try the coconut red curry. It is fairly cheep."
(Businessman 20's)
"I really like it when the Deli Demina comes twice a week. I'm thinking of buying the salsa
arabiata and stewed hamburger back to my office." (Office lady 20's)
"I'm quite fed up with the company cafeteria so today I'll try the Mideastern sandwich

(Tatsumi Shinoda artwork selection director of the Tokyo International Forum)
The art work that gather at the "Boat of multiplicity"
Kan Yasuda
The building of Tokyo International Forum is very geometrically beautiful but a little hard. The
sculpture of Yasuda loosen ups the atmosphere of the plaza. It looks soft as a rice cake.
It even looks light because the bottom is slightly floated. But it is a hard heavy stone. To be
able to create that is the brilliance of Yasuda. I still remember the day when this sculpture
first came here on a truck as the first work that arrived when there was nothing in the plaza.
I placed the work on the ground from the jack of the truck. It was a chilly day.
People tend to look upwards when they are in the plaza since being surrounded by tall
buildings. The second reason why I chose Yasuda's work is because I wanted people to
focus concentration on the ground.
When a sculpture is placed on a pedestal, people look at it as something you appreciate.
When there is a barrier, it means you can get closer. The sculpture placed in the plaza has
no pedestals or barriers.
Especially at Yasuda's work, you can actually touch and stand on it. Sculpture is something
that attracts people. Wanting to touch is a perfectly natural feeling.
There is a third reason of me choosing Yasuda's work. The color. The color of Tokyo
International Forum is metallic gray. I wanted a brighter color. Yasuda uses white marble of
Pietrasanta, from Italy where he has been living for a long time.
I have been to stone yard with Yasuda where the top of the mountain was cut off.
The whole mountaintop was all white like a glacier.
The great Michelangelo even used the marble of Pietrasanta. When I stayed at that village, I
woke up in the morning by birds and a little girl singing. Yasuda's stone was also there.

《Ishinki》
Kan Yasuda who is active all over the
world, including Japan and Italy, creates
big sculptures of human sizes by using
marbles. His great works attracts people
and make them want to touch them
rather than to dominate by its power.
