FOREWORD
Swedish companies create jobs in India! Nearly 150,000 jobs are directly
created by Swedish companies present in India. The indirect numbers are
much higher, including sub-contractors, farmers and service providers.
We are pleased to present the seventh edition of the Sweden-India Business
Guide. It provides contact details of the Swedish companies established in
India and the Indian companies in Sweden. Here you will also find useful
information how to trade with and invest in both countries.
In this edition of the Business Guide, some new elements have been included
- the geographical spread of Swedish companies across India and a statewise breakup of employment generated by them.
As in the past, we stand ready to facilitate the growing of contacts between
partners in Sweden and India. We hope that this Business Guide will continue
to contribute to even stronger links between us!

The Swedish Society and Economy
Sweden is consistently ranked as one of the most competitive economies in
the world by the World Economic Forum. It is known for its rich natural resources,
innovations, high-tech companies and caring society. Freedom of expression,
gender equality, a deregulated economy and reformed central government
finance combined with an efficient welfare and social security system have
contributed to the societal and economic development.
In an international comparison, Swedish is a very open economy - to international
trade and investments. Exports account for almost half of Swedish GDP, consisting
largely of manufactured goods, such as vehicles, machinery, pharmaceuticals
and forest industry products. Trade in services is large and growing, especially
in areas of business services, travel and transportation. Asia is an increasingly
important export market for Swedish companies, even larger than the Northand South American markets combined. Imports to Sweden from Asia have also
grown over the years.

Swedish citizens are encouraged to take the chance and start new businesses,

companies. According to the global Entrepreneurship monitor (GEM) 2014, the
number of entrepreneurs in Sweden have doubled since 2006.
Sweden is among the leading research nations in the world. As an advanced
industrial nation, research plays a key role for economic development as well as
for society at large. Innovation and co-creation are important for tackling major
challenges. Today, Sweden ranks as one of the most innovative countries in the
world.
It has a long history of international commitment to pursuing active global
cooperation on sustainable development. This has led to Sweden being in the
forefront of developing new environmental technologies and sustainable system
solutions. This includes renewable energy, green buildings, waste management,
air and water treatment, sustainable fuels and battery-driven vehicles. Swedish
industries are in particular innovative also when it comes to life science, IT/
telecom, automotive industry, mining and pulp and paper.
Sweden is a strong player in the cultural and creative industries. These industries
play an increasingly important role in the growth of the Swedish economy and

The first wave of Swedish companies to India arrived in the beginning of the 20th
Century, with companies like Ericsson, SKF, Swedish Match and ASEA (later to
become ABB). Diplomatic relations were established in 1948, the year after the
country became independent.
Together, they employ more than 2000 people in Sweden and the presence is
expected to increase rapidly as these firms are looking at expanding and hiring
locally to tap the high-potential Nordic market.
After independence, in 1957, the Indian prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, visited
his Swedish counterpart, Tage Erlander. The two political leaders agreed that
Sweden and India had a lot in common and would profit from collaboration.
A large area of land was allocated to Swedish companies in the city of Pune,
which was a strategically good location considering the proximity to India’s
commercial center in Mumbai. In the 1960-70s Pune became an important
industrial hub, where a second wave of Swedish companies like Alfa Laval, Tetra
Pak, Sandvik and Atlas Copco were established.
The third wave of Swedish companies entered India during the 1980s and
1990s with among others Volvo and Perstorp. Companies with large purchasing
organizations, such as IKEA and H&M, also started doing business in India. In
the 2000s Volvo Cars and Scania established subsidiaries in India. They were
accompanied by an influx of small and medium sized companies, such as
Systemair and Rotec, to name a few.
India has become an increasingly important market for Swedish companies.
Trade between Sweden and India has increased significantly over the last
decade and a steadily growing number of Swedish companies have established
themselves here.
A number of Indian companies have also invested in Sweden, particularly in the
IT-sector. In total there are more than 50 Indian companies in Sweden today.
Sweden has attracted a number of Indian global industrial leaders like Aditya
Birla Group, Bharat Forge, Tata Group and Wipro. There have been substantial
investments in the field of ICT, Life Sciences and Materials technologies. Global
leaders like TCS, Wipro, Infosys, Cognizant, HCL Technologies, Cyient, L&T Infotech,
Cadila Pharma, Kemwell Pharma and Biocon have been present in this region
for many years.

Business Visa to India
If you want to visit Sweden and you are not a citizen of the EU/EEA, you may
need a visa. A visa gives you permission to enter and stay in Sweden for a short
period. It is valid throughout the Schengen area, but you apply to the country
that is the main destination for the journey.
To improve the service available to those applying for a visa, the Embassy
cooperates with VFS Global. The easiest way to apply for a visa is to visit one
of the Swedish Visa Application Centres (operated by VFS Global) which are
currently available in seven cities; New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai,
Bangalore, Hyderabad and Pune.
Swedish passport holders and Non-Swedish passport holders (resident in
Sweden) are required to apply for visa for India by downloading the Visa
Application form from the website of Cox and Kings Global Services Sweden
AB (http://www.in.ckgs.se) and on the Embassy website. This form is to be filled
up on the website, a printout taken, signed and submitted to Cox and Kings
Global services Sweden AB with all requisite enclosures.

The handling time for visa applications is 10 to 12 days, and the passport
is thereafter returned to the applicant by VFS Global. The Embassy however
strongly recommends applicants to apply at least 3 weeks in advance of
intended departure in order to avoid any inconveniences.
You can also submit your application in person to the Embassy of Sweden in
New Delhi during the opening hours of the Visa section. A decision on your
application will be available after 15 days.
