S o that’s it; we’ve come to the last official day of the 75th Sturgis Rally—and it was one for the record books. With ten days of scheduled events and a week or so of scattered motorcycle traffic on either side of the official days, this rally pushed the limits to be bigger than ever. At the Buffalo Chip, campers and guests found the best concerts and the stellar party they expected plus so much more. Signature Charity Rides, a worldrecord-setting motorcycle jump, and a military appreciation day like no other rolled out smoothly, as if precision planned. After a year of anticipation, we got together at the Chip for the week and made the most of coming home once again. First time campers and guests are now part of the Chip family, too, The Chip staff work all year long for Rally week and the truth is, we hate to see you go. Because it’s only The Best Party Anywhere™ when you arrive to make it that. So let’s not say goodbye, let’s just say hasta la vista, baby because like The Terminator, we want you to be back next year! And what a year it will be! Make plans now to join us in 2016 for the Chip’s 35th anniversary year. Expect the party to continue hardy, too because we’re already planning a spectacular celebration you can’t miss. If you have a favorite camping spot, you’d be wise to book it now. Equally important, the prices will never be lower than they are today so that’s another reason to plan ahead. You know what to do: visit www.buffalochip.com or give a call. We’ll see you next year! See you next year - Ride free, take risks! Staff pick • 10:15 PM Miss Buffalo Chip Finals The Miss Buffalo Chip Pageant contestants are some of the hardest working ladies at the Rally. They bust their butts all week long bartending, washing bikes, appearing at events and more. But where they really shine is the stage, and they love an audience. That’s why I wouldn’t miss the Miss Buffalo Chip finals for the world. Be there rev your engine for your favorite contestants–they deserve it. – Greg Smith, Sponsorship • 10:30 pm – Make Love and WAR at the Same Time: Do the right thing–be WAR’s friend as they kick out the jams from the Wolfman Jack Stage. • Midnight – Have One Hell of a Last Hurrah: You’ve done it all. You’re a certified Chipster, a Rally badass, and you partied like a rock star at the Party of the Century. We’ll see your smiling faces next year. Sturgis Rider Daily We are Chipsters Saturday, Aug. 8, 2015 Saturday, Aug. 8, 2015 Sturgis Rider 5 Minutes with Chief Jim Bush Daily Page 3 Art of the Lakota & More Jim Bush started with the Sturgis Police Department as a reserve officer in 1978. He retires this year after 38 years of service - and has yet to own a motorcycle! SRD: Do you have more officers on board for the 75th this year? Jim Bush: I have the same number I have since 1995. We’re not a very large department and every one of my regulars has to take on a supervisory role for rally. They make me look good. They do their jobs and I couldn’t do it without them. It sounds corny but it’s true. SRD: Locals say visitors are more likely to get a warning than a citation. True? JB: We give a lot of verbal warnings about open containers. We pour out enough beer to fill a truck! SRD: Do you remember working your first Sturgis Rally? JB: I was riding with a captain in the department and we turned on Junction and he said, ‘My God, Bush, they’re starting to park in the second block; we’ve lost control!’ Now they cover the whole city! SRD: Were you amid the mayhem in City Park in 1982? JB: Yes, I remember one night they knocked out a window in the patrol car and the light bar was broken. You’d make a traffic stop down there and they’d throw rocks and shoot, they’d start fires across the road and stop traffic, drag raced and burnt the portable toiles, get the blue bus down there and have girlie shows. The locals just got tired of it. Then the big campgrounds started up and that was good. The event would have killed itself if it had stayed in town. SRD: What’s your favorite rally so far? JB: I don’t know if I have a favorite one. They’ve all been fun! In all of the 38 years I’ve always enjoyed this job,. There wasn’t a day I didn’t want to come to work. SRD: How has the rally changed locally? JB: Back in the day we used to get a lot of complaints from the local people, but I get very few anymore. They’ve mostly got involved by working at the rally in some way or they rent their house out and leave for the week. They’ve learned how to handle it. SRD: So most of the locals like the Rally now? JB: That old couple I talked to summed it up best and I never forgot it. They said: It’s like going Within our historical building you’ll find the finest collection of Plains Indian Arts, Crafts and Jewelry, plus Pine Art and Prints, Glassware, Pottery, Toys, an incredible selection of Native American and Pioneer Books, Tapes, CDs, Videos, Out-of-Print Collector Books and unique Craft Supplies. on vacation and never leaving your front porch! It’s amazing actually, how this town transitions, adding 700 to 800 new retail stores in a week. That would be chaos anywhere! SRD: So how does the town make it work? JB: There are three facets; the public safety people, the local people, and the visitors. They all make it work. It’s amazing there’s as little trouble as there is. It’s like a big Woodstock – but that was only 3 days! SRD: Have the bikers changed? JB: The first year I worked it was still like a picnic in the park and the bikers were younger guys. Today, I stand and watch the crowd and don’t see a lot under 30. Those guys that came in ‘78 are still coming, they’re just older now. One thing that has changed, you see a lot more females riding bikes. SRD: And this year for the 75th? JB: This will be the biggest rally I’ve ever seen. Everyone thinks the 50th in 1990 was the biggest but we haven’t had a rally that small since. In 1989 we had 78,000 people. In 1990 it went to 380,000! In ‘89 it was all on four blocks on Main Street, nothing on Lazelle or at the exits. I still think 2000 was the biggest. That year it was backed up every afternoon on 90 to the county line. SRD: So what’s the best way to avoid the expected traffic tie-ups? JB: The worst times will be every afternoon, from 2 till 7 PM. It could take two hours to get across town. That’s very possible if the numbers are true. SRD: Where will you be for the Sturgis Rally in 2016? JB: I’ll probably stay in town and watch the people. It was actress Kristy Swanson! SRD: What a surprise to see you attended the Freedom Celebration Ride! Kristy Swanson: It was spectacular! It was such an honor to be there among those men and women who have served our country and to honor those who have passed. I was so touched and so moved. SRD: How did you find out about the Ride? KS: I originally got involved with the Veterans Charity Ride to Sturgis that started in LA. I was at the send off with Jay Leno and other celebrities. We all agreed to hook up at the Freedom Celebration Ride in Spearfish. And one of the Hansen Award recipients is a friend of mine, Tyler Southern. We’ve known each other for years. I see him at the Caddyshack golf tournament in Florida and we’ve talked about a film related to PTSD. SRD: Do you come from a military background? KS: No, not at all! But I was on a USO tour to Afghanistan in 2009 and it changed my life. It was so completely eye-opening and I just knew I wanted to spend more time with military people. I got to know Gary Sinise and his Lt. Dan Band. They’re an 11-piece band and just marvelous. I think he’s the Bob Hope of our generation. SRD: So you’d participate in the Freedom Celebration Ride again? KS: Yes! I was impressed by the whole thing. I encourage anyone who comes to the Sturgis Rally to be a part of that ride and to support our men and women in uniform and our veterans. Elkhorn Ridge RV Resort 20189 US Hwy 85, Spearfish, SD 605-722-1800 Sturgis Page 6 Rider Daily Life After War A fter Jay Redman suffered life-threatening combat wounds serving with the U.S. Navy Seals in Iraq in 2007, he could have responded in various ways. The shock quotient is high when a person’s life changes unexpectedly and we humans can be more reactive than thoughtful when survival comes to the forefront. But from the start of this next step in his life Jay had plans and none of them involved wallowing in self-pity. In fact, he posted a note on his hospital room door making it plain that sympathy was not welcome. That was eight years ago and since that time Redman has become the founder and spokesperson of both Wounded Wear and the Combat Wounded Coalition. He’s also an author and motivational speaker; and when Jay Redman speaks, smart people listen. Redman was on hand at the Buffalo Chip in 2014 to receive the Bob Hansen Distinguished Service Award, an honor conferred in recognition of courage but also of persistence and endurance. Redman’s stalwart attitude and determined intensity made him an ideal candidate for this award. He came back to the Buffalo Chip this year as an exhibitor at The CrossRoads. “We need to take care of our warriors and we need the help of the American people,” he said. “We’ve fought this war for 14 years now, the longest in our country’s history, and our warriors are hurting. A lot of bikers are veterans and appreciate the sacrifices that make this country what it is, so this rally is a great place for us to be.” A chance meeting last year at the Rally with John Paul DeJoria led to a major moment at this year’s Freedom Ride when DeJoria announced a donation of $80,000 to veterans organizations, specifically to Infinite Hero and Redman’s Combat Wounded Coalition. Naturally, Redman was elated. The Coalition’s goals are to make sure veterans are connected to the opportunities that are available, and to encourage them to reach out and use their initiative. Added Redman, “Support is available but you have to participate. And then you have to give back, you have to get involved.” It’s the hand up, not the hand out concept. Where’s Woody? The Buffalo Chip’s ubiquitous Rod “Woody” Woodruff loves to meet campers. He roams far and wide at the Chip, so keep your eyes peeled for his smiling face and say hello. And if you want to win classic Chip merch, also look for Woody in the pages of the Sturgis Rider Daily. Each day there’s a different Woody caricature hidden in a photo of an event or location he especially recommends. The first three campers or visitors who report their find to the Chamber of Commerce/Rally Info Center at the Chip Crossroads win a prize. And don’t forget to take note of where Woody is hiding out, because that’s definitely the place to be. See you next year! Reach out and grab it! Saturday, Aug. 8, 2015 Read before entering Redman is also in Sturgis to present this year’s Bob Hansen Awards Thursday night on the main stage at the Chip. He was honored to do so. “Meeting Bob last year, seeing him again and seeing the crowd react to him and the award recipients—it was great,” he said. “We’ll definitely continue to come back.” Wonder what that letter said that Redman posted on his hospital door? We did, too. Here it is: “Attention to all who enter here. If you are coming into this room with sorrow or to feel sorry for my wounds, go elsewhere. The wounds I received I got in a job I love, doing it for people I love, supporting the freedom of a country I deeply love. I am incredibly tough and will make a full recovery. What is full? That is the absolute utmost physically my body has the ability to recover. Then I will push that about 20 percent further through sheer mental tenacity. This room you are about to enter is a room of fun, optimism, and intense rapid regrowth. If you are not prepared for that, go elsewhere.” Editor’s Note: Jason Redman has been nominated for the Eagle Rare Life Award, which could result in $50,000 to the Combat Wounded Coalition. Vote for him at eaglerarelife.com/content/Jason-redman. PRINTED IN USA Saturday, Aug. 8, 2015 I t’s easy to get distracted at the Sturgis Rally, there’s so much going on. But did you know that one of the best motorcycle rides in the world is just outside your tent flap or front door? Highway 14A cuts through the limestone towers of Spearfish Canyon twisting its way through the stately tree-lined gorge along Spearfish Creek for an epic ride of about 20 miles. Stop to see Bridal Veil or Roughlock Falls, and roll into one of the pull-off for phenomenal views. You can get to 14A via the service road off exit 14 of I-90. When you get to Cheyenne Crossing there’s an option to make the loop through Deadwood and Lead. Some riders simply turn around there and take the canyon road back the other direction; it’s the same road but a totally different experience and just as spectacular. If you don’t mind gravel roads, here’s another option. Watch for signs between Lead and Cheyenne Crossing and go up to Terry Peak for remarkable views. The 35 mph speed limit feels slow in the sweepers and too fast in the hairpins, but you’ll likely be too busy taking it all in to worry about speeding. So take a break from the party and remember what brought us here: our love of riding motorcycles. There’s no better place than Spearfish Canyon to get in the wind. Rider Daily Page 9 Page 10 Sturgis Rider Daily Anybody who’s anybody has been here Saturday, Aug. 8, 2015 Center stage at the Chip When the Buffalo Chip first welcomed bikers in 1982, it was little more than a cow pasture. Improvements were made each year as it grew into the Legendary Buffalo Chip you know now, the home of the largest music festival in motorcycling. Among the many changes over more than 30 years, the one that had perhaps the largest impact was the construction of the main stage in 1999, christened by Woody as the Wolfman Jack stage. That year the new stage hosted Lynyrd Skynyrd, 38 Special, Def Leppard and Montgomery Gentry raising the bar to bring these kinds of top national musicians to Sturgis and setting the standard for the Chip’s future status as THE place for the best Rally concerts. The Chip’s 35th anniversary in 2016 offers the opportunity to not only take stock but to also take an appropriate place as one of the pivotal players over the Rally’s history. The list of cultural icons, actor, politicians, and, of course, musicians that have crossed the Chip’s is long and varied. In 2015 alone, the Wolfman Jack stage was home, at least for a little while, to the famous and the infamous. Let’s take a look at some of the characters who appeared it in 2015. Saturday, Aug. 8, 2015 Sturgis Rider Daily Page 11 The International Bikini Team Adding to the beauty of the Black Hills No doubt about it, the Buffalo Chip is the best party at the Sturgis Rally. It has the top headliner concerts, tons of activities and contests, plenty of camping space, great bars, good food and the prettiest women in town. That last item, the pretty women, is no coincidence, because all week long there have been 21 members of the International Bikini Team onsite. 2015 marks the fourth year the Bikini Team has come to the Chip. Of course, the girls compete every night on the Wolfman Jack stage in the Miss Buffalo Chip pageant, but they also spend the week tending bar around the venue and they operate the Bikini Bike Wash at the CrossRoads daily. These are busy girls! Michelle McDaniel, a former Hawaiian Tropic model, started the International Bikini Team in 2008. You’ll see her on stage every night announcing the competitors. She’s a high-energy person and she has to be: she performs logistical magic managing 21 Team members over the 12 days the group is onsite at the Chip. “We don’t sleep much during the rally,” she said. “When the girls compete they’re done by 1:00 AM. When they bartend they can be working until 3:00 or 4:00 AM. Some of them have a morning shift that runs from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM and there’s the bike wash from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM.,” Michelle explained. This isn’t exactly a vacation for any of them! “But being at the Chip for the Sturgis Rally is my biggest event and it’s the one all the girls want to come to,” said Michelle. You’re likely to see these ladies at various locations across the Chip but they get the most visibility on the Wolfman Jack stage competing each night for points in preliminary rounds of the Miss Buffalo Chip pageant. The pageant consists of eight preliminary contests during which the top three winners are announced each night. The top ten point-earners go on to the finals, which will be held this Saturday night on the main stage. Three rounds are judged: Biker attire, with gear provided by Hot Leathers; Miss Buffalo Chip attire, with items provided by the Chip; and naturally, the bikini competition. There’s $500 in prize money each night and $2000 in the finals. What this means for spectators is plenty of time to enjoy the scenery these lovely ladies pro- vide. Looking for an opportunity to get closer? Well, judges for the nightly contests are sourced from the VIP area on a random basis each night. They’re sourced from sponsors, Fenske Park campers or people who bought VIP passes just for that night. That’s a cool potential perk of the VIP experience! “The girls meet and mingle before going on stage,” said Michelle. “It all works together really well.” The International Bikini Team also works with the Silverado Franklin Hotel & Casino in Deadwood, a prime sponsor of Michelle’s. “We go to the Legends Ride on Monday and do a bikini contest at the Silverado several days during the rally,” she said. “We help with their bike giveaway, too” Though Michelle and her girls maintain a supercharged schedule they enjoy it. “I’m so glad we’re a part of so many things,” said Michelle. “We’re very approachable. We like to mingle and talk to people, we try to take pictures and be friendly.” So when see these beautiful girls, whether they’re serving you a drink, detailing your bike or simply flashing you a lovely smile, remember: they work hard so be nice! Saturday, Aug. 8, 2015 DAILY LEGAL TIP By Chuck Koro Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys WITNESS INFO IS CRUCIAL While it may seem obvious that witnesses are important when you’re involved in a traffic accident, we are surprised at how often this information slips through the cracks. One client sustained a significant leg injury after putting his bike down to avoid hitting a vehicle that turned left in front of him against a red arrow. The offending driver told the rider that he was distracted and did not see the light turn red. He also told him that he had plenty of insurance and would cooperate in getting the bike fixed and getting any medical expenses paid. There were several witnesses at the scene who saw the other driver run the red light, but the motorcyclist did not take their information because the other driver admitted fault. By the time the police arrived, the witnesses were gone and the other driver changed his story, claiming the motorcyclist ran the red light. No matter what, always get identifying information from favorable witnesses. Not just cell phone numbers, but home and business telephone and addresses too. If necessary, enlist the aid of a bystander to assist you. Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys 1-800-4-BIKERS or visit russbrown.com. Page 14 Sturgis Rider Daily Saturday, Aug. 8, 2015 Worth one more look Eagle 75 The Eagle 75 Human montage and performance art was so remarkable we decided to give you another look! After all, it’s the world’s largest motorcycle sculpture to date! About 1000 bikes and riders gathered near the CrossRoads Field of Flags on Thursday afternoon and parked as directed. When everything was set, artist John Quigley took off in a helicopter to record the event. This singular event was presented by Black Hills Clean Water Alliance, the Buffalo Chip, and SpectralQ to celebrate the Sturgis 75th, recognize the freedoms we enjoy in America, and honor the active military and veterans who keep them secure. Saturday, Aug. 8, 2015 Sturgis Rider Daily Shirley Overland meets with a biker during the Sturgis motorcycle rally last year. Overland, now 95, enjoys watching the bikers drive by her home at Aspen Grove Assisted Living in Sturgis. Never too old for fun 95-year-old resident loves rally time Mary Stitts is always amazed at how much her mother loves the Sturgis rally and all the bikers who descend upon her hometown. Stitts’ mom is 95-year-old Shirley Overland, and she’s gained a bit of a reputation as a onewoman welcoming crew for bikers who pass by the nursing home where she lives in Sturgis. Instead of hiding away in the hopes of avoiding the brash bikers who roll loudly through town, Shirley makes a point to not only watch and welcome the motorcyclists, but she sometimes also takes photos with them outside the Aspen Grove Assisted Living center at 2065 Moose Drive. “She thinks they’re great people and very respectful,” said Stitts, who lives in Rapid City. “Last year, when we were walking around, I put a sign on her back that said ‘I’m 94, come say hello,’ and you wouldn’t believe how many people came up and talked to her.” Originally from Huron, S.D., Shirley has lived in the Black Hills for about 40 years, and used to write government grants for senior homes and assisted living centers before retiring. About 10 years ago, when she was living in Custer, Shirley was saw how the senior center there would provide turkey legs for the bikers during the rally. That, and other friendly activities sparked Shirley’s interest in all things rally, and especially the people, her daughter said. Shirley’s love of the rally and its visitors was something her daughters never expected. “That was a huge surprise for us,” Stitts said. For Shirley, it’s simply interesting to see the variety of ages of all the bikers, and she enjoys people-watching with a passion. “I like to watch them ride by,” Shirley said of the afternoons she spends sitting outside the assisted living center, sometimes with a few others. Stitts, who now rides a motorcycle of her own, said she’s realized over the years how much her mother accomplished, despite push back over the years. Stitts said she and others are in awe at her mother’s incredibly positive attitude about the rally, but also on life and aging in general. “She’s done a lot of good, and she’s had the tenacity to stick with it,” Stitts said. “She’s been very accepting of changes throughout the years — not being able to drive, living in an assisted living home and everything that comes along with health — and she’s got a very strong faith.” Pick up your copies at Rapid City Journal 507 Main Street, Rapid City Black Hills Harley Davidson 2820 Harley Dr, Rapid City, SD 57702 Sturgis - 1022 Main Street Have your books shipped by ordering online at Rapidcityjournal.com/book Page 15 Page 16 Sturgis Rider Daily Saturday, Aug. 8, 2015 Last Night’s Concert American heavy metal band Skid Row, at left, returned to Sturgis for the 75th after their recent re-release of 18 to Life. Pulling from a broad catalog of work they displayed a fresh dynamic with new lead singer Tony Harnell. British rockers Def Leppard, above, broke rules and expectations from the start, and their performance on the Wolfman Jack Stage at the Chip last night proved they haven’t changed. Their sweet metal sounds soothed the partied-out biker soul. FLying Piston benefit breakfast Fun with a purpose It was a quick start to the 75th Sturgis Rally last Sunday, August 2, when a savvy group of custom builders mingled with an even savvier bunch of custom bike fans at the Flying Piston Benefit Breakfast. Held adjacent to the Motorcycles As Art exhibit in the Buffalo Chip Russ Brown Event Center, the breakfast was configured to give riders the opportunity to rub elbows with the creative men behind the amazing machines in this year’s Motorcycles As Art show, The Naked Truth, curated by photographer Michael Lichter. The informal gathering allowed for photo ops, autographs, super bargains on silent auction items, and just plain conversation between the builders, fans, sponsors and media. Al proceeds from ticket sales, expected to be about $1000 once tallied, benefit the Buffalo Chip’s Technical Education Scholarship Fund established to encourage young people and returning veterans to consider motorcycling as a career path. “We put a stake in the ground in this first year,” said event coordinator Marilyn Stemp. “Expect this not only to continue but to grow.”
