AT A
We continue to serve Maryland families and communities through a variety of programs and
services. The 17 families in new homes this year represent diverse cultures and backgrounds,
however they have one thing in common – the desire to own a safe, decent and affordable home
where their family can grow and thrive. There is no better place to raise children than around other
hardworking families committed to making their neighborhood a great place. Thank you for your
continued support, friendship and dedication to the mission of Habitat Chesapeake!

Donors & Special Thanks
Dear Habitat friends,
We are committed to bringing people together to build homes, community and hope. Our
successes over the years are a result of the wonderful support we received from you and our
Central Maryland community.
This report marks the beginning of a stronger affiliate as we celebrate the merger with Sandtown
Habitat for Humanity. With three mergers over the past seven years, Habitat for Humanity of the
Chesapeake is poised to better serve the growing need for affordable housing in Central Maryland.
The merger of our two affiliates represents the continuation of our commitment to create affordable
and decent housing opportunities. Our goals include empowering more Maryland families with the
opportunity of homeownership and planting the seed of hope for neighborhoods in need.
Behind the merger lies a richer story about the remarkable partnership of four great affiliates.
From our work in Anne Arundel, Howard and Baltimore Counties to our consistent presence in
the Sandtown and Woodbourne-McCabe neighborhoods in Baltimore City, our affiliate will
continue to invest and build more homes and hope throughout Central Maryland.
Every day we are truly thankful to be working with our partner families, our 2,400+ volunteers,
our dedicated staff and our Board of Directors. With your support, we’ve constructed eight new
homes and rehabilitated nine homes, allowing us to help seventeen families achieve the dream
of homeownership. And looking ahead, we have 30 houses in various stages of construction.
Sincerely,
01
M. Posko

HONORING
ALLAN TIBBELS:
CO-FOUNDER OF
SANDTOWN HABITAT
(WITH HIS NEIGHBORS)
Allan Tibbels once convened a
construction meeting at Sandtown
Habitat in the face of deadlines and
crisis and simply told the staff to “love
one another.” That’s just who he was.
He embraced and embodied the teaching,
“there is no greater love than to lay one’s life
down for one’s friends.”
Allan, along with his partner, LaVerne Stokes, served Sandtown Habitat from its founding in
1989 until his passing in 2010 with what Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. once called a “dangerous
unselfishness.” In fact, despite often being called a “hero” for the accomplishments of the
Sandtown Habitat affiliate, he refused to see himself apart from his neighbors. He saw his
life’s work as being about loving his neighbor and the authentic reconciliation of people from
all walks of life. It was his life’s example that inspired his staff to follow his final charge to
“keep at it” and continue his legacy into a new season of labor and love.
By now you know that the next chapter in Sandtown Habitat’s 25-year history has become
one of embracing new possibilities and embarking on a new venture with Habitat for
Humanity of the Chesapeake. After a long discernment process, during which time the
leadership of Sandtown Habitat sought wisdom to sustain the affiliate for another 25 years,
it was concluded that merging the two neighboring affiliates would be a catalyst to open
many new doors for Habitat in the City of Baltimore and surrounding region. It was in the
spirit of faithful stewardship that the merger was formalized on October 1, 2014.
Our merged affiliate moves forward in Allan’s vision and faith. Explaining his Christian
beliefs, he once said, “You don’t have to have what you don’t have. But, you need to use
what you do have.” What we have is the foundation of love, persistence, and community to
continue to build upon. As his favorite musician wrote: “O love that fires the sun, keep me
burning.” May we all keep burning in Allan’s memory.
04
“Faith is not complacent; faith is action.
You don’t have faith and wait.
When you have faith, you move.”
-Betty Eadie
MARYLAND NURSERY, LANDSCAPE & GREENHOUSE ASSOCIATION
On September 17 and 18, 2014, volunteers from the Maryland Nursery, Landscape &
Greenhouse Association (MNLGA) and Habitat for Humanity of the Chesapeake came together
to begin landscaping over 25 homes in the Brooklyn neighborhood of South Baltimore. As a
reinvestment in this neighborhood, various beautification projects began that included exterior
painting, litter control, and landscaping by MNLGA, an association that includes over 300
horticulture, landscape and related green businesses.

MEET JOHN
JOHN SOGN mirrors the dedication of volunteers who come out rain, shine or snow to help us
complete our family homes in Central Maryland.
After 30 years as a researcher at the National Institute of Health, John retired in 2006 and
decided to volunteer with Habitat for Humanity, joining our Chesapeake affiliate in 2013. He’s
been volunteering with us ever since. You can find John almost every Thursday and Friday on
a Habitat Chesapeake build site. “I’ve done almost all of the jobs on our work sites,” said John.
“The best aspect of the job is working alongside our partner families.”
John looks back with pride in the role he plays in making a difference for more than 50 Habitat
Chesapeake families.
“It was about getting out and staying active once I was retired,” he said while taking a break from
installing decks at the Ward Street work site. John adds that helping build Habitat homes
has been rewarding and seeing the families become homeowners is the icing on the cake.
Habitat Chesapeake is deeply grateful for all the time, expertise and enthusiasm that John and
our Red Hats have brought to the affiliate over the years!
SUPPORTING THE CAUSE THROUGH VOLUNTEERISM
Habitat for Humanity of the Chesapeake’s Red Hats are a group of skilled men and women
who help guide and lead volunteers on our construction sites. Red Hats commit to serve at least
ten days a year on the build site, assisting the construction site supervisors’ efforts to ensure
safety, productivity and quality control of tasks performed by volunteers who have no previous
construction experience.

MEET STEVE BUCK
With ten years of volunteer construction leadership, nine years of Board membership and more
committee seats than he can count, STEVE BUCK exemplifies the spirit and mission of Habitat
for Humanity.
Steve first got involved with Arundel Habitat in the 1980s, and was attracted by the concept of
giving others a hand up to achieve their own goals. Since then, he has worked not just locally
with Habitat for Humanity of the Chesapeake, but also nationally and internationally with the
Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Work Project each year for the past five years. He appreciates that
contributions made here at home also impact families around the world through our global tithe
commitment. As Steve says, “People are in need everywhere.”
For Steve, the best part of working with Habitat is fellowship: “You’re guaranteed, when you’re
involved with Habitat, to meet really great people, … from relationships with partner families
and neighbors, to the volunteers, to the staff and board.” And, true to this spirit, he is rarely
seen on site or in the office without a commemorative t-shirt from one of his many builds-- and
never without a big smile.
In addition to his personal work, Steve also puts his family foundation to work for Habitat
Chesapeake. Over the past decade, the Blue Waters Foundation has contributed nearly $2
million toward our mission-- gifts which he sees as an investment. “The best thing about giving
your money to Habitat is that you’re lending the community money, and then that loan is paid
back via mortgages and goes forward to new houses. That’s the real beauty of the model.”
“Just get involved!” Steve says to new volunteers and donors. “I’m convinced that if giving of
yourself is done selflessly, you get more in return than you give. It’s a pretty simple process.”
“Faith plus action equals transformation.”

MEET ROSE MARIE
Rose Marie Hellmann has volunteered with Habitat Chesapeake since 2007. She joined our efforts
while an active member at Saint Vincent de Paul of Baltimore. A retired Baltimore City English
teacher and Montgomery County School Reading Specialist, Rose knew she wanted to give back
and create a better community.
Rose Marie’s first Habitat experience was
volunteering on homes in the Patterson Park
neighborhood. While she found the work
interesting, she also began to learn more about
Habitat’s mission and felt the need to do more.
In addition to serving as a Green Apron* at
our Columbia ReStore and her annual fund
contribution, she made the gracious decision to
donate a property she owned in the Hampden
neighborhood of Baltimore to Habitat Chesapeake.
19
Her donation helps reduce our costs and ensures
that another working family in our area will have
access to permanent, affordable housing.
