Celebrating 30 years... Annual Report July 2012 to June 2013 Cover Photo by Alina McElroy 1 Simple Our homes are modestly-sized — large enough for the homeowner family’s needs, but small enough to keep construction, maintenance and utility costs to a minimum. Since 1982, Habitat for Humanity of the Chesapeake has provided more than 360 individuals and families with the knowledge and opportunity to purchase affordable housing in Anne Arundel County, Baltimore City, Baltimore County and Howard County. Each groundbreaking and home dedication marks another step toward eliminating poverty housing in Central Maryland. The work has proven to be successful and we are proud to partner with volunteers, donors, families, businesses and organizations – people like you. On September 30, 2012, we celebrated 30 years of partnership with Central Maryland families at the Habitat Family Reunion in Patterson Park. Food, games, dancing, kid’s crafts and a photo booth were all part of the celebration as families, staff, volunteers, donors, supporters and neighbors gathered to share memories from our last three decades of success! Decent We use quality, energy-efficient, locally-available building materials. Affordable Volunteers, efficient building methods and no-interest mortgages make it affordable for low-income families to purchase Habitat homes. 2 Dear Friends, Reflecting on this past year, it is exciting to think about the many accomplishments we have enjoyed together. From the 30-year anniversary party to the opening of our fourth ReStore in Columbia, it has been a year of incredible change and great celebration. And we have you—our family partners, board, staff, donors, corporate partners, sponsors and volunteers—to thank for our continued success. Here are just a few highlights… Our ever-increasing focus on green building makes us all particularly proud. Not only are our houses Energy Star Certified, but in many cases our energy efficiency efforts exceed industry standards. This helps our family partners save on energy costs while reducing our carbon footprint. Over the years, we have shifted our focus from “building houses” to “revitalizing communities.” While we have always endeavored to improve the neighborhoods where we build, we are now working holistically with the communities in which we build to create green spaces, support the community associations, and offer a variety of services that help our family partners thrive in their new environment. The opening of our Columbia ReStore marks our fourth retail operation to provide unrestricted funding that supports Habitat Chesapeake. Opening day brought in record-breaking sales of $18,000—the highest one-day earnings of any of our four ReStores! So, you can see why this is a year to celebrate our successes with you. We deeply appreciate your role in making these achievements possible, and thank you for your continued support. Each family has been different—each story unique, but some things remain the same. Through courage, hard work, and remarkable perseverance, these families have completed the journey to homeownership through Habitat Chesapeake’s Homeownership Program. hours while working full-time and caring for family. Habitat Chesapeake volunteers and family services staff are there every step of the way, offering encouragement, sharing information, and learning their own lessons about strength and commitment from family partners. We have celebrated each family’s achievements with house blessings, the gift of a Bible and words of pride and gratitude from suppporters. Tears have been shed and applause has been enthusiastic as families receive the keys to their new Habitat Chesapeake homes. Family partners serve 200 hours or more building “sweat equity” in their homes, working side-by-side with staff and volunteers on a construction site or in one of Habitat’s ReStores. They participate in 50 hours of Homebuyer Academy to prepare for the financial realities that come with homeownership. So what has changed in 30 years? In fiscal year 2013, Family Services served more than 120 families, helping them in their path to become successful homeowners, able to survive economic ups and downs. For the first time, staff members and volunteers worked one-onone with partner families to resolve outstanding credit issues and practice newly-acquired budgeting and saving skills. Families tell us that the journey to homeownership is exhilarating—mastering new money management skills or finding new confidence while building houses. The journey is also daunting—completing sweat equity Families performed their sweat equity hours on construction sites primarily around Baltimore City where more than 6,000 hours were devoted to building houses and rebuilding communities. Of those served, of those served, more than 80 families completed Homebuyer education more than 80 families completed our homebuyer education program and a newly-instituted testing program which evaluated content mastery. All family participants graduated with 80% or higher scores. As Habitat Chesapeake made the transition from building houses to building communities, Family Services helped 28 families settle in five different communities including Brooklyn, Washington Village / Pigtown, Pen Lucy, the Patterson Park area and Orchard Ridge. In 2013, Habitat Chesapeake homeowners have become active neighbors intent on improving living conditions in the communities they call home. Families were encouraged to take part in their community associations after receiving training to serve as citizen activists. Habitat Chesapeake family partners were involved in community clean-ups, Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) walks and working with local partners. In the future, these family partners will become an increasingly important part of Habitat Chesapeake’s efforts to build communities, as well as homes. 5 More than Volunteer & Community Engagement 4,000 volunteers nov 12 • Veterans & active military build w/ A Mother’s Cry, American Gold Star Mothers & JHU Lacrosse dec 12 • First planning meeting with McCabe Community Association May 13 • First of two Build Days with Baltimore Ravens staff and players woodshop 1,198 hours in the office Fourth year of partnership with Urban Alliance construction hours in 9 communities 14,905 hours at the restore The school year started off with a dedication on Ward Street for a home sponsored through coalition work the previous year. On November 6, 2013, supporters and Habitat for Humanity global leaders raised the walls on the 800,000th home the organization has built, rehabilitated or repaired around the world since its founding in 1976. The home is being built by Atlanta Habitat for Humanity. “This milestone house celebrates the dedication and commitment of many hands and hearts that share our vision of a world where everyone has a decent place to live,” said Jonathan Reckford, CEO of Habitat for Humanity International. “Anchored by the conviction that housing provides a critical foundation for breaking the cycle of poverty, Habitat is committed to helping more families, partnering and advocating with other groups to create new housing opportunities and inspiring people to take action to end poverty housing. Thank you to our many donors, partners, volunteers and advocates, whose contributions to our ministry have made it possible for millions of people worldwide to have a decent place to call home.” With an average of five people per Habitat home, this milestone house represents an estimated 4 million people who have improved their living conditions through Habitat’s housing solutions in the more than 70 countries around the world where Habitat works. “It’s such an honor to be a part of this milestone celebration with Habitat for Humanity International,” said Larrie Del Martin, president and CEO of Atlanta Habitat for Humanity. “We couldn’t be more proud to be among the 2,300 affiliates globally, working together with families, volunteers and donors to build affordable, quality homes. Atlanta Habitat looks forward to seeing the impact in 2015, not just locally, but in our communities around the world.” In its 2013 fiscal year, Habitat for Humanity built, renovated or repaired 124,946 homes, marking the first time that Habitat served more than 100,000 families in a single year, significantly surpassing the previous record in 2012 of 94,618 families served. This equates to a family being served on average every 4 minutes. In addition to housing construction efforts in 2013, Habitat for Humanity provided 214,244 individuals with technical assistance, such as financial literacy education and construction training. “This 800,000th home milestone is an unprecedented accomplishment and we are excited to be on track to serve a million families through new home construction, home renovation or critical home repair by the end of 2015,” said Reckford. “This milestone also complements our new strategic plan that focuses on improving housing conditions for the escalating number of low-income families worldwide; supporting and influencing partner organizations to increase access to shelter and advocate for affordable housing policies; and mobilizing the hands, hearts and voices of volunteers in the cause of adequate and affordable housing.” Habitat for Humanity’s global leaders and supporters gathered in Atlanta today to raise the wall on Habitat’s 800,000th home. worldwide families served in FY13 CONSTRUCTION New: 24,608 Rehabs: 4,902 Incremental: 25,729 Repairs: 69,707 Total construction: 124,946 Disaster risk reduction and response: 32,014 HOUSING SUPPORT SERVICES Land tenure (families): 1,163 Technical assistance (individuals): 214,244 11 Financials ASSETS $32.9 million July 2012 to June 2013 REVENUE $12.2 million EXPENSES $12 million Of every dollar contributed, 88 cents goes directly to support Habitat Chesapeake’s programs and services.
