Although many websites and magazines have been closed down in recent years due to the persecution of
pit bulls and their people, this e-zine will in no way promote or condone animal cruelty, illegal activity, or irresponsible ownership, BUT WE MAINTAIN that the information contained herein is of great historic, cultural,
educational and artistic value. The purpose of Sporting Dog Journal is to explore and share with others the
fascinating history of the pit bull breeds. In order to understand the nature of the modern-day pit bull, it is
imperative to understand its history. Fighting and baiting—like it or not—is part of this history. To those who
would judge us harshly for our interest in these subjects, we like to quote Mr. Justice Brandeis, in his famous
dissent in Olmstead v. United States, 277 U.S. 438 (1928):
“Experience should teach us to be most on guard to protect liberty when the Government’s purposes are
beneficent. Men born to freedom are naturally alert to repel invasion of their liberty by evil-minded rulers.
The greatest threats to liberty lurk in insidious encroachment by men of zeal, well-meaning but without understanding.”
DON’T LET THE HISTORY OF THIS BREED INFLUENCE YOU INTO FIGHTING DOGS UNLESS YOU WANT TO GO IN JAIL!!!

OZZIE STEVENS
PART TWO
Ozzie Stevens with ONE EYED BUTZ - BIS and GIS winner
In this second part of the interview Mr.Stevens
will go in details about dogs like CH ZERO, CH
CHOLLY BOY, ZERA, OLD CHARLIE and dogmen
like STP, Crenshaw, Frank Bunce, Dave Adams,
Billy Stepp etc...
Have a nice time reading!
O.Stevens’ CH ZERO?
If Jeep would have come in against this dog, and this
dog, he could of fought at Jeeps weight. Zero. Jeep
would have ran out of there in 30 minutes. This Zero
would have beat him so bad, that he would have ran
for his life. Zero was a high pressure dog. The way
he got you, I don’t care if you won 17 fights. When
he’s in the corner and you’re getting released to
come to fight. What you think he’s gonna do, is meet
you in the middle of the pit, you’re gonna start fighting huh? Well you better think again bud, cause he’s
figuring how to cripple you before you start in the first
seconds. I took one fight, I went to Kentucky. Ken
Allen took the fight. He takes the fight and asks me
to bring Zero. I traveled down there and there was
all these blacks waving $100 bills. They’re all smiling with their gold teeth waving $100 bills. I release
Zero, when they reached the center of the pit, the
dog reached for Zero, and Zero threw himself on his
back. The dog shot over his head, and he reached
up and grabbed his joint. And he bit him threw the
belly. He pierced his bladder. Within seconds he
come off the bottom and slammed that dog and put
him on the bottom and I looked down and I see the
pee running out his belly. And we’re talking three
seconds, he punctured his bladder. (Laughs) So
how do you fight a dog like that? I fought somebody
else; let’s see what I did to them. I pulled him too thin
and I beat a dog, the guy was so mad that I took his
dog, and beat him to where he couldn’t scratch. He
wanted to shoot him. But the dog was incapacitated
so bad he couldn’t do nothing. So I said leave him
here, so I kept him around for a roll dog. I start rolling him, the dog was so good I matched and beat
somebody. I beat Bunce or somebody. Then I beat
somebody else, then I sold him to a friend and he
won again. Dog had ability, bite, enough gameness,
whether he got counted out the first time, whatever,
he was too young, he never made any bad moves
after that. That was a dog called CJ. Mike Sogans
CJ. I matched into a dog Texas Ron had and he just
killed somebody. He just matched a couple months
before in a convention and he went into the kidneys
and killed a dog. So everybody is afraid of him and
Rocco calls me and tells me, “Oh, Texas Ron is saying everybody’s afraid to match into him.” That’s
because he called Rocco on and Rocco didn’t want
to fight him. Rocco was afraid. So Rocco tried to
shove it to me so I’d take him out of the way. So he
wouldn’t be after him or embarrass him or whatever.

I agree to go and fight in Texas Ron’s cellar. Right
in his house. This dog is a pretty rough dog they
got and you know; he just killed a dog. We release
the dogs, and they are running across to meet each
other. They come right at each other, at the last second Zero jumped to the side; that dog went past him.
But he whipped and he grabs his nose. Zero bit his
nose, took a hold of it but he was running so fast he
kept going. He went right past with his nose in Zeros
mouth. Zero braced his legs and pulled him back
to an abrupt stop. Where his whole body weight
slammed against and almost pulled his nose off.
He was screaming 5 seconds into the fight. I mean,
screaming cause he really got that nose jarred. Zero
went to work immediately, starts beating the shit out
of him. Went to work in the throat, lifted him off the
floor. Kept rootin in the throat, shutting his air off,
lifting him off the floor, lifting him off the floor. The
initial thing where he threw him off totally was when
he side stepped the dog where the dog kept going
and he got his nose, and that really got him. He beat
him and pressured him and put the pressure on so
bad, he went back up for a second and just kept on
kept on just pressure, pressure, pressure the worst
pressure case you ever want to see in your life the
pressure he put on him. Shut his air off like the other dog thought he was gonna die. That dogs name
was Evil. And he thought he was gonna die because
Zero kept shutting his air off. He tried to jump the
pit and as he jumped the pit, Zero was so fast, he
grabbed his tail and pulled him back in an slammed
him on the floor and went in his throat and a quick
flurry in the throat and he busted up everything in his
throat good. The dog had to scratch, couldn’t do it,
wouldn’t do it. It was about 44 minutes. Zero was
Virgils littermate brother. He was a hell of dog.
muzzle. I bit his dog between the eyes with such
force that it split the muzzle and both fangs went
sideways. Then she come out of there, went in her
armpit and bit her in the armpit. His dog was dead.
They couldn’t figure out how she’s dead. That was
Zera; Zero’s daughter. When she bit her in the arm
pit, she broke 4 ribs and punctured her through the
heart. That was 25 minutes. My bitch was dragging
her around the pit. That guy wouldn’t pick up and the
referee wouldn’t say nothing. I wanted to get out of
there and everybody was giving me a bunch of shit
and how do end the fight. It’s over, your dogs dead.
Well, he aint gonna pay me. You know, they’re all
on their side so at an hour we’re still there. I says,
“Okay, yins are all dirty bastards really trying to cheat
me.” Anyway, I scratched to a dead dog, believe it
or not. Just to show them. But I gave them a warning. He was holding the dog sideways, I says, “Let
me tell ya, I’ve been a gentleman this far. But when
I release my bitch and she comes across there. You
drop your dog on the floor and my dog hits that wall
and breaks her teeth out.” I said, “The next step, I’ll
be coming over and I’m going bust all your teeth out.”
And he held his dog! (Laughs)
O.Stevens’ CH CHOLLY BOY?
One time, we went to Rhode Island on Captain
Americas landfill. Well on a landfill, you’re dumping garbage and rubbish. What does that breed?
Trillions of rats. This is Cholly Boys first fight. So
he kills Captain Americas dog by one hour, but he
won’t let him loose. He will not come out of hold. He
O.Stevens’ ZERA 2XW?
I had a daughter out of him (Zero) that I killed a dog
in 25 min down in Kentucky. I went down there and
this guy was the dirtiest, lousiest guy I ever seen in
my life. Just a low life, never been anywhere where
he could ever say he was a gentlemen. He probably
don’t have anybody in his family that are gentlemen
or ladies, you know because he’s a jack off. He tried
everything he could to dirty me out. Cheat me, dirty
me. I gave him his reward for the dirty shit that he
did before I came to the pit that day. I broke his dogs

dragged him around up until the 2 hour mark. And
Captain America would not give up the fight. The
referee never even did anything. Everybody tried to
cheat me again. I quit talking to him (Cholly Boy) and
I just kept moving to where he couldn’t see me so
he could wonder what happened to me so he could
come out of hold. Otherwise I’d a been there for
days. That’s what I did, I just quit talking to him, and
finally he come out of hold and wondered where I
went, and I grabbed him. Of course, his dog couldn’t
scratch. But Captain America, he’s a weasel. He’d
let them dogs sit there forever, he hinges to the last
second trying to do anything he can to pull it off.
It was about a million rats running around on the
ground. We’re in the car, we’re headed to the garage
building we’re gonna fight in. Peoples in the pick up
truck ahead and they got their feet hanging over the
edge of the tailgate. We go, “What the hell’s that?”
Something’s moving like a big rug moving. No, it
was a rug of rats. They were side by side by the millions all over the ground. It was all moving. There
was that many rats! Everybody with me says, “Holy
Hell, I can’t believe what we’re looking at!”
Old Charlie?
He was cold. A lot of people say they would never
breed to a cold dog. Depends who his parents were.
If you inherit some genes from him, what do you
think you’re gonna get from his parents? And that
was Homer and Gearldine. Both ROM’s. People
can say all they want. Did they breed all the Champions and Grand Champions I did?
O. Stevens’ RAMONA ROM

STP’s CH MISS RAGE
littermate to O.Stevens’ CH CHOLLY BOY
Favorite Dogs?
I would put Cholly Boy up there. Virgil was a killing
dog; all power. Cholly Boy was a smart dog. Cholly
Boy didn’t go out there and try to kill you. Although
at some times, he put it on you. He hit an artery on
STPs Revenge. And STP said Revenge was going
to be a 6 or 7 time winner. And he probably would
have been. But what I did to him, I made a total fool
out of that dog. Cholly Boy took him to school to
teach him what you do. They threw in the towel. He
(Revenge) chased for over an hour, couldn’t get a
bite. I never gave Cholly Boy penicillin after the fight.
Too smart, he stayed right out of his way.
James Crenshaw & STP?
Here’s where I put it, Crenshaw and STP. They had
the most fights and they were the most well known
guys and they weren’t easy to beat, you know, for
most people. But for me, I couldn’t care less; because I had killing dogs that were game. And at anytime, they could hold them out for a while maybe, but
eventually I’m gonna get you. And my dogs wont’
run out of air. Most of my fights that I’ve been in you
won’t see my dogs tongue ever out of his mouth. I
went against devastating dogs that could bite your
dogs’ leg right off. I had my dogs go so deep into
their ear and bite and hit that nerve in there. You
know the toughest dogs in the world, I had my dogs
go right in his ear and deep down in his ear and hit
that nerve. They start growling and then crying and
growling and crying and back and forth and they
wanted out of there and I wouldn’t let my dog off their
ear. I punished them so severely by the time they
had a scratch, they are going to stay in the corner
and they don’t want no more. Or I had dogs go on

the nose, because a dog can take punishment in the
body, he won’t take it in the nose. I had a bad battle
before; I went into TKO kennels, from New York. Everybody says, oh you’re in trouble. They got a killer
back end dog. Never been bit in the nose. She took
my bitches shoulder out. First five minutes of the
match. Then she went back and tried to do it again,
and my bitch was sore there, mine grabbed her by
the nose. And when she bit her in the nose, her tusk
went inside her lip. Up in the gum and lip, all the way,
cause she could bite hard. The fangs come down on
top of the muzzle. That bitch might have been going
for her championship, but she was screaming bloody
murder and then once she did that, that’s a signal
to my bitch to really put it on her. Which she starts
whipping her and shaking her. I told them, TKO, I
can see it right in front of me right now, you better
pick your dog up at 30 minutes. They wouldn’t say
yes, no, boo, they wouldn’t answer. I said, “Well I’m
here for business and this is business and this is the
way it goes.” So I talk to my bitch and I tell her to really, really put it on her bad. So I think they let it go
another 10-12 minutes and then they threw in the
towel. I helped them try to save their dog but she
died anyway. Dog died right there.
Crenshaw and STP, I’ll put them up there, you know
the highest because they’re the most well known
guys. I’ll give them both credit for that. Now as
far as Crenshaw and STP, their well known and
they had a lot of fights. But all the dogs that I had,
if they’d of come into them they’d a got their dogs
killed. That’s it. Snake Jr bit a dog one time, one
bite in the shoulder. You think a dog could go into
shock and die from a shoulder bite? He did. He did,
he did. Now my friend Bryan, he was a good close
right hand man. He was a Vietnam Marine and he
was a hard core son of a bitch. Real hard core guy.
So I gave him Snake JR and he pulls him way down
below his weight. But he was a biter, really a biter.
So he had took the bottom for 16 minutes and I look
at my watch and I say, “Oh Jeez, Bryan you really
screwed up.” This dog that he was against, he won
two fights. He was going for his championship. He
had Snake down on the bottom and Dave Adams
friends were there. Snake from the bottom reached
up and grabbed his shoulder. He was down, getting
shook all over the pit for 16 minutes, he reached up,
grabbed the shoulder and he just calmly didn’t do
nothing, he just paced himself till he got his head together cause he got shook up so bad he didn’t know
what state he was in he was shook up so bad. So
he hung on to that shoulder. Slowly he got back on

bite. So he took his foot and he moved his foot up,
like to bend his leg, and then he straighten it out. All
the fragments flew out of his shoulder. Of bones, in
about 30 pieces fell out. That’s how he shattered the
bone. Like pieces of toothpicks, like bone fragments
coming out. That’s why he went in instant shock.
This is gruesome, gory stuff. Now, but this is what
happened, but this is how some dogs could bite. As
far as Crenshaw, or STP playing with me, they may
as well jump in a cage with some Tigers because
look what happened to them.
Crenshaw’s CH BLACK JACK

his feet. Now he’s standing up facing that dog, he’s
still in the shoulder hold. And he moved his feet back
and forth. He set his feet. Cause they bite all the
way down, the whole body like that where they can
really crunch down, up his back and up his neck and
the whole bit. He set his legs and he continued to
bite on the shoulder a full bite. And all of a sudden
that dog fell straight on the floor, BAM! His chin hit
the floor and he stared straight ahead. And he never
moved. And everybody says, “How the hell can that
be. He’s resting, this, yah, yah, yah”. And another
guy says, Dave Adams friends, they said “Hey, look
at his eyes, his eyes are all glassy. That dog’s going in shock how the hell can that be”. And all the
blacks say “No, no, no”. That dog stayed there and
he could not, they wouldn’t pick up and Snake just
kept chewing his shoulder. They had to pick up in 30
minutes. So they picked up, and they tried to revive
their dog but it wasn’t happening. So Adams guys
who bought dogs from him, Sexton and something.
Sexton and somebody else. They come over to this
dog that Snake just bite his, it’s like he shot him.
That’s how hard Snake bit him. And they couldn’t
figure out how that could happen from a shoulder
Frank Bunce?
Bunce was a really good guy. I sold him dogs and
every god damn dog he had a grand champion.
He had Grand Champion Arrow and he had a dog
called Bum. And Frank was a heavy drinker. He
matched in to Rocco’s Hauncho. Up in Detroit,
there was 150 people there. He won with Arrow
and Arrow was a Komosinski cross mixed with my
blood. Bum the same way. Rocco’s dog roughing
him up all the way and Bunce was drinking, didn’t
work the dog good, over worked him probably so he
was weak and screwed up. Rocco would bring a
dog in, in good shape. So his dog is kicking Bunce’s
dogs’ ass. Everybody there thinks and figures it’s
over. He’s down; he’s been down the whole fight.
PAGE 9
WWW.SPORTINGDOGJOURNAL.INFO
Frank Bunce
SPORTING DOG JOURNAL
AUGUST 2010
This dog called Bum. Bum, he’s determined not to
lose. So he got a hold of the ear from the bottom.
Rocco’s dog was fine as long as he was ahead. Now
Bunces dog grabs his ear and he stays on it. So
Rocco’s dog wants to get loose from that ear hold,
but he can’t’. So he starts whining. When he starts
whining, that encourages Bunces dog to go after him
worse. Bunces dog after being on the bottom the
whole fight for 20 minutes was never on his feet in 20
minutes, now he stood up. Everybody in the whole
crowd, they were all cheering for his dog, 150 people
cheering for his dog. He proceeded to kick Rocco’s
dogs’ ass and Rocco’s dogs crying and making all
kinds of noise. Rocco gave up, dog beat him. So
every dog I sold him, he won with. And then he won
trophies in a lot of them. Best in Show, he won Best
in Show with a few of them. And Gamest in Show.
Everything he got from me, he won with. Bunce was
a real honest guy, he was really square, but he was
a drinker. Yeah he was a drinker.
Dave Adams?
Dave Adams was a premier dog man. He’d been
around way back. He’d been around. They had been
in the dogs before me and from down in there part of
Cincinnati. They were in the suburbs of Cincinnati,
farm country and they were allowed to do whatever
they wanted. They did whatever they wanted and
they had ended up getting dogs from people. They
had the money, they start buying dogs. They bought
Double Ot. The Texans start selling dogs. But the
Texans they thought that because they were from
Texas they were better than everybody else. They
sold Double Ot for $2,500 bucks, way back that’s a lot
of money, that’s like $5,000 now days. $2,500 bucks
for Double Ot, Double Ot had already quit. See how
dirty they were. So Adams never looked to see. He
never checked the magazine, it was in there. So, he
matches into Big Brad. Big Brad got Red Danger. I
was there and they were fighting it out. Double Ot
was a son of Eli Jr. I believe and one of them rough
dogs. Rough ass Eli dogs. Red Danger went to the
ear and Double Ot was searching for the stifle. So the
fight went on and on and on. Double Ot turned. So
this is where David Adams made his mistakes, prior
to that he was doing good. Until he starts buying
dogs off the Texans. Because they didn’t give him
nothing. They shafted him all the way. Where they
thought they were so superior to everybody, in their
dreams. So what happened, Double Ot made a turn,
he was to scratch, so they start scratching. As the
fight went on, the referee says “Release your dog.”
Double Ot stood in the corner. He starts counting,
“One, two, three, four…” then Double Ot came. Next
time; Red Danger to come. Red Danger stood there,
“One, two, three, four…” then the next time it was
up to the five count before they’d come out, then up
to seven! And then finally Double Ot quit. But they
were both staying in the corner. This is how crazy,
bullshit that I’ve seen. Adams was a tough guy to
beat. Big Brad matched into Adams several times,
beat him every single time. Dave Adams beat everybody else, but he couldn’t beat Big Brad. Outside of
that, Freddy Bowling he would fight here and there.
He would, you know, get somebody else’s dog usually. Take somebody else’s dog and bring it in.
Dean Hudson, Dave Adams & CH Booker T
Dave Adams had no humanity. He had no respect
for nothing. No dogs. If I’d won, I would not tell the
guy, “Oh, he’s gonna die. You have to put him out of
his misery.” “Well how do I do that?” “Well, here I’ll
give ya an axe.” I mean this is insanity. As far as,
this ain’t my idea of dog men. You don’t do that. He’s
killing that dog; he’s hitting that dog with an axe in the
head. I mean, if you can’t do it right, then don’t do
it at all! There was nothing wrong with that dog and
PAGE 10

he killed him. I could look in the dogs’ eyes. It was
clear as can be. He just got cut up. He had some
big cuts, that’s all. Go get the staple gun, pull him
together, staple him. Look, you can have cuts like
this and that. That don’t mean nothing, if they’re not
deep inside you, nothing there. When I had Virgil
and I had them other dogs, and I had Homer. Dave
Adams didn’t want no parts of that.
And he matched into King Glover and he poisoned
his dog. His own friends said that. Stinsons’ friends
is the ones that said that, that he poisoned Glovers
dog.
Billy Stepp?
Billy Stepp was a gangster. He had all gangster connections. Mess with him too much, you’ll disappear.
As a dog man, he didn’t know nothing. He was a
gambler, he was a backer. Many of the guys were;
they were the guys that put the money up. Somebody else did the work. Everybody can’t be a dog
man. It’s very simple.
Jim Stinson?
Stinson he was, he wasn’t the most honest guy in the
world. He poisoned his, he had a partner. He was
in the asphalt business. King Glover, a black guy.
Walter Komosinski?
Walter Komosinski would smack Jack Kelly in mouth
too… Walter would punch anybody in the mouth!
If you screwed with him or pushed him around, you
do something to him… I was his best friend for 18
years. I was the referee that day in that fight, against
Ralph Livingston, 39 years old. Then Ralph lost the
fight, his dog quit. So he walks out of the barn and
he sics his dog on one of Walters’ young dogs outside there. The young dog, grabbed Ralph Livingston’s dog but he was only like 13 months old. Walter
thought his dog was crying, but it was Ralphs’ dog
crying. Walter says, “He’s only a young dog; get your

dog off of him.” You know. And then besides that,
he was supposed to fight two weeks later, he came
early that day Livingston did. And then he didn’t
have the money to pay the bet! And then he goes
and sics his dog on Walters’ dog, his 13 month old.
And Walter told him to leave go, and he didn’t do it.
He says, “I’ll make you leave go”, he came over and
uppercutted him. He went flying. And he hit the wall
of Walter’s barn, slide down on his ass. He get up
and Walter had glasses on. He whipped them off
his face, folded them put them in his pocket, came
in again, pulled back a right hand and blasted him
with a right hand and dropped him a second time.
Walter’s 80, he’s 39. So, I went and grabbed Livingston I figured oh shit, this young guy is gonna be
so mad, he’s gonna kill Walter. When I grabbed him,
to hold him back he said, “Don’t hit me again Walter,
I’m leaving!” Hahaha. So the old time people was
crazy huh!? I seen a lot of crazy stuff, let me tell you.
On conditioning...
When your dog is in perfect shape, and I conditioned. Crenshaw never conditioned as good as
me. Neither would STP. They couldn’t keep up to
me. Never. They tried. STP did. Captain America
did. I mean all the other guys, couldn’t do it. People
hired people. You know to condition for them. I beat
their ass anyway. But when they hired me, I had to
take that 600 dog; son of Mayday. The Cubans sent
me $1,500 bucks told me I was working this dog and
bringing him down. They sent the dog up. I went into
Crossroads Kennels. Both dogs were going for their
Championship. I had my dog so strong, that 600,
and I just pointed to the backend talking to him…
always in front of their eyes. Instead of in the stifles
he bit him in the kidneys and that dog gave it up right
there. He had a fatal bite, he knew he was gonna
die and he didn’t want to fight anymore. They threw
in the towel, their dog died. Crossroads Kennels.
Every dog I conditioned for Ken Allen won; never lost
once.
Flirt Pole is the secret. I took Cholly Boy (working
him for J.Rods Whitefoot match) and I had a flirt pole.
I could excel with a flirt pole. There ain’t nobody in
America could ever keep up once I used a flirt pole.
I had an area back there where I used. I’d go in a
circle. I had him jumping; I made him jump for the
hide on the flirt pole. I had him jumping. I start jumping (25) jumps. Go around a circle, he start chasing
it, then I start lifting it. Where he’d go run and jump
and I’d move it. He miss it, he’d hit the ground turn
in a second, come back a second time and I’d lift it
again, he’d miss it. So I had him jumping back and
forth, back and forth. I start about (50) jumps. Next
day I started adding about (25) a day. I peaked him
a few weeks before, I was doing (450) jumps in the
morning and (450) jumps in the night. I was gonna
try and do (1,000) jumps a day but I had to do (450)
in the morning and (450) in the night and I was putting all kinds of stuff in him like feeding him liver and
I had carboplex, different carbohydrate powders and
feeding the liver I got his blood count up real good.
He was doing (900) jumps a day. When he was doing that, I never got past that. That’s the way we went
into the match and he never showed no strain at all.
Jesse Rods had that Whitefoot dog. He killed a
Champion of STPs and one of Captain Americas.
Jack Kelly said this is the baddest dog in America at
45/46 lbs. Cholly Boy beat him.
On overworking a dog...
You just gotta watch your dog, if he starts dragging
ass where he… If you walk him and you hand walk
him, and he’s pulling you all the time, when he stops
pulling you and starts walking beside or behind you.
You’ve overworked him right there. You gotta quit.
A lot of guys, I heard Frank Rocca say if you have
to give off two days to rest, then you have to forfeit
because your dog will never be ready. Bullshit. I’ve
gave two days off many times. That don’t mean a
god damn thing. Never heard of it, that’s his thinking
and other peoples.
Frank Rocca, he lost every time he matched into a
dog of Frank Bunces or one of the black guys in Pittsburgh that he matched into called Smoker. I bred
that dog, I bred him and I sold him as a 16 month old
pup to Ralph Livingston. Well Ralph Livingston goes
and sells him to this black yo-yo. Well he goes out
and he beats Dave Adams, then he beats Big Brad
and he beats Rocca. He gives Roccas dog a severe beating. He won four times over known people.
That Smoker was a hell of a dog. Oh, he collected a
forfeit on Angus.

On sportsmanship / dogmen...
Here’s a guy with a dog, if his dogs getting screwed
up, don’t you think the guy has to give up? See
there’s nothing I can do. Should I lose because he’s
an asshole? No, it’s not fair to my dog. But you meet
people, if got my dog hurt; do you think I’d leave him
in there to get butchered? I’d pick my dog up right
away and walk out of there. I’d come back and get
you another day. My way of looking at it. But people
don’t look at it that way. I mean people, get in stuff.
If my dog starts ripping one little bit. I wouldn’t put
him through it. I give up and get out. Okay, you win.
Here’s your money. People are assholes, let me tell
ya. I don’t believe in that kind of shit. I do not feel
you should go, you know; if you see you can’t win,
forget it. Your pride? Bullshit. Don’t expect your dog
to go through what you couldn’t go through.
Everybody can’t be a dogman! This guy sees that
and he wants to do it because you do it. If you ain’t
got it in ya, and you ain’t really dedicated you ain’t
getting no where. You don’t show off and brag to
everybody, you go and prove that you’re that good.
On schooling / handling...
I could look at something right now with a dog. You
could have 30 people there; you’re all lost in the fog.
I know what’s going on right now. That’s why I get
in fights and got right out of them. My dogs in bad
trouble. I acted like your losing. I’ll scare them. I
never showed ever one sign of weakness. I just
talked to my dog. I could have been worried to death
but I just stayed in front of my dog and said, “OK”.
Komosinski told me, “Don’t stand behind him like
assholes.” They stand behind them like assholes,

my life and you’re lost! You go in front of them! So I
always went in front of my dogs eyes. When I did, he
looked at me wagged his tail and fought really hard.
So when I was in trouble, I’d come out of it.
Is there anything different you would do if you
could do it all over?
I would trust less people. Everybody’s jealous out
there.

Blackrocks Kennels’
GRAND CHAMPION SAM Jr.
We got a call from our friends Loony tunes and Rumble from chi-town to breed to their Ella bitch from
Killian and a bitch out of Ch Diablo Negro and Gr
Ch Tina, 6 days out from our championship with our
Sam 2xw son off of Machobuck which was going into
Lefonze, we were hesitant but said if something happens we need the blood so we bred our Sam dog 3
days out one day before heading to Fl from H-town.
As life would have it we won with a broken jaw, with
one of the toughest jeep red boy dogs in the world
and in first class shape, Sam’s jack hammer mouth
saved us and definitively showed way gamer than
we imagined. We forgot about the breeding and 15
months later after relocation abroad we spoke to
our friends and they said “come get a pair of pups”,
we picked Sam jr and Samantha. Sam a brown and
white Andy cap clone and Samantha a black bitch
with white chest! We took Sam jr to Mr C’s ranch
and tried starting him up and all he would do is bite
the muzzle from the bottom but would not pop to the
top against a bigger Chinaman dog 2xw so after ten
minutes we took him off our dog and Surprisingly he
bulleted across yet just took bottom and tortured the
muzzle! We rolled some others and Sam raised hell!
After the other rolls we went to healing up Sam and
saw there was nothing wrong with him but the other
dog’s muzzle was in pieces!
We sat on him a month then got a call from our
friends at DNK apparently they had been paid a forfeit 4 weeks into keep and wanted to do a show at
42 so called up for a dog for four weeks, we knew
what time it was but said we cant get a better roll
than 1500 to see if our dog is worth a shit plus Sam
works like a horse, so we agreed that if Sam did not
crank up there would be no match and were set for
4 weeks! They show up and are both on weight ,
On release Sam stays in corner and gets plummeted
and dog goes and immediately breaks our shoulder
but Sam pops up after abut 4 minutes and goes to
eat the muzzle, We scratch our head when Sam
starts dancing on the muzzle like a pro, then real
fancy on the ear and never lets the dog touch him

all the while taking shots at his throat the second he
gives it up, at 20 DNK’s Sancho has no muzzle left
and then we go deep, deep in the high kidneys, I said
look at this little shit! Sancho made some amazing
scratches but does not get picked up early enough
and really got aced. Sam is so smart, too fast, and
only hits the throat and high kidneys but does not let
you touch him from muzzle and ears!! DNK can’t go
at 55 Sam Jr. is a 1xw,
We hook Sam for Mexico City against Destroyer
Kennels but come in less than a 1/4 pound over and
use Lil Crazy ass substitute coming off a win in Morelia two weeks prior and win in 25! Sam stays in training for Mexico city 6 weeks later for CH Diablo, We
arrive in Queretaro for the 18 dog card on Saturday
and take BIS with our now 2xw Zorro dog and then
head 3 hours to Mexico City to show Sam into Diablo. We are on weight and although a 35 hematocrit I
decide to go for it and Diablo never gets his guns out
of his holster and is choked out in his corner in less
than 22 minutes and is picked up , I was really lucky
he came out like he did , I guess he figured he had
no recuperation and had to take care of it quickly as
I am sure he would have lost if it went long as I had
a bad blood count!
Baja convention in TJ is only 6 weeks away so I decide to go into Ch Paqiao! A friend comes over to my
ranch from TJ and notices all my dogs have stomachs like they are pregnant and I now realize why I
am struggling with weight the mystery remains until
4th keep I realize Mexican water toxicity is just not
potable for humans or dogs! Not knowing this I come
half pound over and so does Ch Paquiao, Dogs meet
in middle and Paqiao get Ace job, Sam stays fancy
on ears and when Paquiao gets tired we fight for
dear life in throat Sam has a great finish and Paqiao
is half dead and half frustrated as he can not get in
hold he stands at 1:05! Ch Sam is declared CH in TJ!
Mexican convention is only 8 weeks out so I hook
him for Mexico City and like Joe Dirt says keep on
keeping on. We hook into CH Chato, as I am walking
Sam out I see a 50 pound dog and I ask when he’s
showing and he says he’s next. I say what do you
mean what weight? He says 44 pounds! I look at my
partner and tell him its going to be a long day! On release Sam gets slammed in air and into pit walls, he
is literally getting man handled by a bigger stronger
dog. But the entire time he is chewing on the muzzle,
little by little Sam comes to the top on the ears and
holds him out. Then Sam takes his shots at the throat
PAGE 16

at about 39 and then controls the lead picking his
spots and staying out of trouble, Chato slows down
at about hour mark and Sam goes for dear life in
throat at 1:20 it is clearly evident that we are going to
win and Chato is going to die so they pick up. Making
Ch Sam 4xw, for the first time Sam took some heavy
damage from a hard mouth, smart, big ass dog, but
he wins on gameness and intelligence and incredible
finish!
Enrique calls week later and says a 24 dog card in
Mexico City and that Chavez club is asking specifically for Ch Sam so I say lets do it! We are 7th show
on 16 show card! Sam is two weeks out and feeling
great, get blood work and am 44 points htc and all
green. Sunday I rest him up and see his eyes are
white and gums are pale. I go Monday to get pac cell
and manual test says 28…. SHIT not a chance this
will work and now I am screwed, I go to top vet in city
and get complete blood work and am at 26 means
I need a blood transfusion. I find a donor dog and
get 450 litters in 12 hour transfusion the Wednesday
before and rest him up and jump in car for 13 hour
drive on Friday night! We arrive in the 4000 meter
above sea level and with no hemoglobin or red blood
cells, I think pay forfeit but here it’s half the bet so I
can’t afford it! Chavez club weight Russo 1xw and
shit if it isn’t a BIG ass dog again, Weights 43.4 and I
am light, Sam is a real 42.5! Only bad water had me
heavy now at scales I am hair under 43 with bottled
water keep! Sam comes out fancy on the ear and
literally does not let Russo get a single bite going
from muzzle to ear to throat! Sam has a great style,
comes up fancy on the ear, and dances avoiding
mouth, then flips them on their back and hits kidneys
and throat, a real ace of a dog with a good mouth!
At 20 Russo fades and at 22 Sam is finishing deep
in throat and Chavez club concedes match making
Sam jr. Gr Ch. in 22 minutes at the young age or 2
years and 10 months one month behind grandfather
Machobuck! We are proud of our Andy Capp clone
he has come along way and his sister has won in 22
and are looking forward to her championship!! This
Gr Ch. is dedicated to D-town for all the friendship
and that great keep still kicking ass! We will make
sure we will see you sooner than you think buddy!

WHY BULLDOGS?
AUGUST 2010
BY SCREAMIN’ EAGLE
While riding the bus on an adventurous trek through
South Korean traffic congestion I chose to pass time
by opening by laptop and browsing through my “old
pictures” folder. Inside of my “old pictures” (titled so
because I transferred them from my old computer) I
found a folder titled “Bulldogs.” My contemplations
from that day are the codification of this article. Inside of my bulldogs folder I literally surfed hundred’s
of photos of dogs that I have saved, acquired, and
collected. Some of the dogs are famous, some are
vintage photos of random dogs, some are of dogs
that members of the online forums that I frequent.
Many are dogs I’ve seen firsthand, and many more
are the gladiators of the past that I have been drawn
to as a “soul mate.” All of which capture the essence
of what I believe to be the spirit of the American Pit
Bull Terrier...that essence that I have grown to love.
Wallace’s Toney, Adam’s GR CH Zebo, Crenshaw’s
CH Hurt, Santa’s GR CH Mongoose, Gambler’s CH
Crazy Annie, etc. STP’s GR CH Lukane, Tant’s GR
CH Yellow, Ken Allen’s DBL GR CH Tornado, Evolution Kennel’s GR CH Macho Buck, etc. Literally
hundreds all of which I can name on site...Carver’s
Missy, Cates GR CH Nigerino, Fat Bill’s Two Eyes,
Carver’s Bloody Sunday, Garner’s CH Chinaman,
Wallace’s King Cotton, O. Steven’s CH Homer, Fat
Bill’s CH Bolero, Wallace’s Searcy Jeff, and hundreds of others. My mind shifted toward the cause
of this obsession. Why do I have so many pedigrees
bookmarked, saved, and compiled? Why do I get
goose bumps when reading R. Stratton’s “one of
the gamest scratch ever witnessed,” or “The Brindle
Dog” by J.R. LeManquais? Why do I have so many
pictures, historical documents, books, breeding/genetics articles, exercise and nutritional guides etc?
The real question is what is the root of my obsession
with the American Pit Bull Terrier?
It believe that the American Pit Bull Terrier being selectively bred for strenuous purposes, and having
been forged by societies working class was instilled
with (as a bi product) a companion soul compatible
with mankind’s own. Dogs have been our best friends
and partners for eons, but the American Pit Bull Ter-
rier transcends simply being man’s best friend. His
facial expressions are human like. His eyes display
a window to the soul, and reflect the sentiments of a
struggle parallel mankind’s own. These are Dogs of
Velvet and Steel (as Bob Stevens called them) with
the will and prowess of a warrior and the temperament for companionship. Consider that historically
speaking the bull dog is the companion of the down
trodden. The working man’s dog bred to do tasks that
our contemporaries cannot begin to fathom. Bull running. When a rancher/butcher could not move semiwild cattle he called his bull dog to do it. This spirit is
alive in my American Pit Bull Terrier! In society men
will project the qualities that they value through its
heroes. The same way that superman was made to
embody “truth, justice, and the American Way” transcendent ideals were embodied by beloved breed.
While he’s been called by several names (Yankee
Terrier, Rebel Terrier, Bull dog, Bull and Terrier,
American Bull Terrier, etc.) his spirit remains intact.
His loyalty, commitment to a task, unadulterated will,
intelligence, and pure ability is what caused America’s love affair with this breed during industrialization
and periods of war. These qualities also define mine.
What my ancestor’s expected about the Dogs of Velvet and Steel so do I. It is also my will to pass these
lessons on to my own prodigy.
In psychology we often make reference to Maslow’s
hierarchy of needs. Psychologist Abraham Maslow
introduced five progressive general need categories
that human beings advance through. Only when the
immediate lower level needs are fulfilled we seek out
and grow by accomplishing higher level needs. In ascending order from the lowest level we fulfill: physiological needs (breathing, sleep, food, water), safety
needs (security of shelter (employment), health,
body, and morality), Love/Belonging needs (friendship, sexual intimacy, family relationships) Esteem
needs (confidence, sense of achievement, respect
of and by others) and finally Self Actualization needs
(acceptance of facts, lack of prejudice, creativity, morality, problem solving). The issue here is that most
human beings never reach self actualization. As a
PAGE 19

gift from our ancestors forging this breed as a warrior, the American Pit Bull Terrier, as a giant of virtue
exists in the plane of self actualization. We are, in
this generation, stewards of a gift that was given to
us by men whose hierarchical needs were already
transcended by what they created. We, as fanciers,
are responsible for the passing on of this breed as a
self actualized entity to the next generation. We are
charges with ensuring that the combat forged traits
are passed along with it. We thus receive a glimpse of
what we aspire to be, and allow our sons and daughters to receive a creature that is morally purged as an
example of what we ourselves can hope to be. Selflessness, forgiveness, intelligence, endurance, faith,
intensity, and persistence are all catchwords that are
used to describe the American Pit Bull Terrier.
Game is what men strive to be, but too often fall
short. Success by men is measured by overcoming
adversity. These values were instilled into the pit dog.
Nearly every society in the history of the world has
venerated heroes that posses attributes that the average man lacks. The ancient Greeks tested athletes
in games of strength, endurance, skill, and mental
prowess. The Romans adopted blood sports pitting
gladiators against each other, wild animals all in a
hope to measure and display qualities that they as
a society appreciated in their own citizens. We have
received the American Pit Bull Terrier as a result of
centuries of selective breeding for these qualities. He
is us intensified. To quote the Art of War from the
ancient Chinese strategist Sun Tzu, ““Regard your
soldiers as your children, and they will follow you into
the deepest valleys.
Look on them as your own beloved sons, and they
will stand by you even unto death!” This is what our
ancestors asked of this magnificent beast, and he
was found game to the test. He was raised under
these principles, and earned his keep. This is what
fascinates many, and frightens many today. I personally view his existence as a gift. There is definite
nobility to the courage to that our breed possesses.
This is a reflection of our kindred souls. We award
the Medal of Honor to our most valorous Soldiers in
Combat. We venerate sayings such as “Give me Liberty, or Give me Death.” Heroes are made from these
convictions. We seek heroics in varying degrees. We
likewise shun cowardice to keep the heroics clear.
The same test was given to the American Pit Bull
Terrier time and again in forging our kindred souls.
Perseverance most often wins the day. Another life
lesson learned, and perseverance is forever epitomized in this great breed.
The values that I hold ideal are embodied in my companion of choice. My chosen breed. Velvet and Steel
is what I expect from myself, respect from others,
and try to instill in my children. Capable, intelligent,
adaptable, iron-willed, and loyal are all more than apt
superlatives. Through his eyes I glimpse into the soul
of The American Pit Bull Terrier, and hope to be seen
by my peers as a reflection. My dogs, my ideals, my
path to the future!

essential one. A dog without a regular, well-formed
set of tenth would be like a vessel without a rudder,
especially if intended for fighting purposes. The covering of the teeth in a dog well-bred should not be
seen when the animal’s mouth is closed. The theeth
are developed in two sets - the first called milk teeth,
showing themselves through the gums about two
weeks after birth and lusting until the fifth or sixth
month, when they are displaced by the permanent
set, the growth of which is accompanied by a degree
of feverishness which is often said by many to be
distemper. If a bulldog is healthy his teeth should be
beautifully white and there should be no deposit of
tartar on them until the third year. After that time they
are always coated with this substance at the roots.
The dog should rock or roll in his gait while his hind
legs should not be lifted high as he runs so that his
hind feet appear to skir the ground. The feet and their
construction are important features in the breeding
of a bulldog. The hind legs should be moderate in
length, but greater than that of the fore legs, so as to
elevate the loins. The hocks should approach each
other, which involves turning out of the stifles. The
fore feet should be round and well split up between
the toes; they should be straight that is, neither
turned outwards nor inwards, and should be rather
small in size. The fore legs should be very thick in the
calves, rather bowed in shape (more so than the hind
legs), but not so as to make the back appear long.
The hind feet are not expected to be so round as the
fore feet, but they should not be long like a terrier’s,
and they should be split up between the toes. They
should be turned outwards and rather small in size.
The color should be “whole,” that is, unmixed with
white; unless the dog be all white, which is, in that
case, considered a “whole” color. The tint should be
either red, red-smut (that is red with black muzzle)
fawn, fawn-smut, fallow, fallow-smut, brindled, white,
or blue fawn (that is fawn with bleo muzzle). A whole
color is always preferable.

A champion is a dog that wins in three shows, in
which all of the dogs are conditioned for that particular show. The shows must then be documented by
being printed in the Sporting Dog Journal.
To be registered as a champion in the Sporting Dog
Journal, the dog must satisff the following conditions:
#1 The shows must be reported to the Journal in a
timely fashion. A show reported out of sequence, i.e.
The first match reported after the second match has
already been printed will not be accepted. Any interested parts can send a report of the show.
#2 Application to be registered as a champion must
be applied for. The Journal does not have all of the
information needed to announce a dog championship in the magazine, therefore, we must depend on
the owner or breeder of the dog to supply us with the
pertinent information. A four generation pedigree, the
breeder’s name and the dog’s date of birth must be
supplied at the time of application.
#3 Any interested party may apply for a dog’s championship. While it is the dog’s owner who would usually apply, a partner, the breeder or a past owner of
the dog may also apply.
#4 A dog does not have to win at every show he is
entered in and no proof of gameness is required.
A grand championship need not be applied for, it’s
automatic. By the time a dog is ready for this title,
all the information needed is already on file with the
Journal, A grand champion must be the winner in five
(5) shows and have never suffered a loss. In a word,
to be registered as a grand champion the dog must
have an unblemished record.
There are, however, several instances, in which, the
dog can be awarded a grand championship without
winning at every show in which he is entered. In the
case of a draw, involving another champion or grand
champion, the dog will not be penalized for a draw.
In a second scenario: a dog whose handler fouls out,
and it can be determined that had his handler not
have been fouled out. the dog most certainly would
have been the winner, as determined by the judge as
well as other knowledgeable dog men in attendance.
Finally, if it can be proven, beyond a reasonable
doubt, that the dog was a victim of some kind of unfairness, that show will be stricken from the records.
A grand champion, in addition to having to win at five
shows, must also have won a majority of these shows
over qualified competition. A dog that has not won a
majority of his shows over qualified competition, or
competition that has been reported on previous occasions, will not be accepted for a grand championship
In the case of the Register of Merit standings: A male
dog becomes eligible to be placed on the R.O.M. list
if he has sired four or more champions. The R.O.M.
dog will be awarded one point for every champion he
has sired and will receive one additional point if any
of the offspring should go on the become a grand
champion. Here again a champion, to count a point
for his sire’s Register of Merit that champion must
have won over a majority of dogs, dogmen or kennels that are considered credible comoetition.
The rules are the very same for bitches to get on the
Register of Merit list, except, for obvious reasons, a
bitch need only be the dam of three (3) champions to
gain a spot on the list.

FERREIRA’S BANDIDA
BY T.FERREIRA OF SKYWALKER KENNELS
Born of a litter of eight puppies there were five females and three males in this litter, among the good
ones were Ferreira’s Bandida and Ferreira’s Shogun.
All started very early and were rough pups but Bandida and Shogun and always stood out among them.
I rolled Bandida and she always showed to be an
intense hard bitch, and when she had her first heat
a friend of mine who owned a Redboy/Frisco dog offered me a deal that was good for both of us. After a
while I got Bandida back and before we matched her
we game tested her on two bitches and she passed
easily. She returned to my yard and we matched into
a group that was winning everything in that time with
MayDay/Eli cross that had a hard mouth.
and challenged me to raise the bet three times what
we had agreed on but I didn’t accept for the simple
fact I didn’t have more money!
The match was to be at a large convention of 7
matches where my dogs were making their debut in
the pit. The night before there was a dinner in and
the owner of our opponent stands and says His bitch
was sure to be best in show why was I even competing? Then the owner of our opponent came to me
I waited two years to breed Bandida and she had
a litter of pups on June 2, 2010 and I am sure Bandida’s legacy will be carried on by her offspring. Also
Bandida is open to match at her weight (40.9/41.8)
to anyone in my country and let’s see if she will have
another success although she is now six years old.
The fight began at a very fast pace with their dog
going into Bandida’s legs and bandida fighting the
chest and shoulders, she was intense and had a
good mouth. Bandida worked hard and knew how
to defend well and keep attacking. The MayDay dog
began singing early with Bandida working the chest
and throat hard and doing a lot of damage. At 37
minutes the MayDay bitch was picked up and gave
a good courtesy scratch making Bandida a one time
winner and best in show!

A BASIC KEEP
BY THE HISTORIAN
Getting a dog ready for the fight of his life is not
someting that should be done in four weeks or so.
The best trainers know that conditioning starts, in a
way, when the dog is born. If a dog gets the best
diet, care, and exercise from birth he can be put in
better shape. The pit prospect can benefit from running the treadmill 10 to 15 min. a day -3 to 6 times
a week, year round. He should be walked a 1/2 mile
to loosen up and empty out before his mill work and
walked another 1/2 mile afterwards to cool off. The
mill work should be at an easy pace. Try to keep your
prospect worm free and about three lbs. over his pit
weight. Never let him get over 5 lbs. more than pit
weight, a dog that is kept in good shape all the time
can be put in fighting shape in 30 days. A dog that
has never been off the chain in his life would benefit
from a month of pre-keep or light workouts before he
starts 30 days of harder work. Before you start conditioning for a match your dog should have a physical
by a vet. Make sure his heart and lungs, kidneys, and
blood count are in good shape and that he is worm
free. To win a long hard fight and live he will need to
be healthy.
One of the most important parts of conditioning a
match dog is picking the correct weight to match him
at. His proper pit weight is the lowest weight at which
he maintains full strength and vigor. You have to work
a dog slowly down to his lowest pit weight to see how
he looks and feels at that weight. If he doesn’t seem
to pull quite as hard on the leador lacks his usual energy or muscle size, then you have taken him lower
than his best weight. He won’t bite or fight with full
power. If on the other hand you match him with extra weight he dosen’t need, he will have to fight a
naturally bigger dog. A pound or two may not seem
worth worrying about if you have a good dog. Believe
me, it is worth worrying about. Never give your opponent weight, even l/2 lbs. If two dogs are equally
good fighters that pound could make a difference.
The pound bigger dog is a little stronger gets the
best of the wrestling and finishes a little stronger. If
two dogs are equal in ability and matched at 401bs.
with one a natural 40 pounder and the other a natural
38 pounder, the bigger dog has the edge. You can
bring the natural 38 lb. dog in two lbs. to heavy at
40 lbs.. This won’t help him stay with the natural 40
pounder and the two extra pounds he carrys will slow
him down and wear him out sooner. If your not sure
of your dog’s pit weight, get an expert to help you call
the correct weight on him. However, even an expert
can’t call the correct weight on a dog if he doesn’t
see him at that weight and working.
Let’s say you have a healthy dog, matched at his
correct weight. This dog has been exercised all his
life and he is only a pound or two over the weight he
is matched at. How do you put him in condition to
fight up to two or even three hours? A pit dog is bred
to have power and fighting ability. There isn’t much
that you can do to make him noticably stronger. You
can train him to stay strong for a long time by building his heart and lungs and the endurance of his
muscles with basic anaerobic activity. Anything that
makes your dog’s heart beat faster will increase his
endurance. Swimming, roadwork, treadmill and catmill work, springpole and flirtpole work will all build
his endurance also.
I am going to cover the use of roadwork and the
treadmill because, they are the methods which I
have used myself. Also, most dog men have a treadmill and can give their dog roadwork with little or no
difficulty. The conditioning program I am going to
explain calls for twenty-eight days of work with the
dog to fight seventy-two hours after his last workout.
Since your dog is used to running a treadmill 10-15
minutes daily, you can start him out with 16 minutes
and increase his millwork by one minute a day to a
maximum of 30 minutes millwork daily. Don’t forget
the 1/2 mile roadwork before and after the millwork.
There are two types of millwork that I use; one, is
steady running at a pace that will give your dog a
good workout but won’t strain him. When you take
him off the mill after say a half an hour workout he
should be able to do another half hour on the mill
PAGE 38
WWW.SPORTINGDOGJOURNAL.INFO
SPORTING DOG JOURNAL
AUGUST 2010
if asked to do so. Undetr no circumstances should
he come off the mill so tired he could hardly run another minute. The second type of millwork that I use
is short bursts of hard running for about 2-5 minute
sprints broken up by taking the dog off the mill and
walking him then alternating him on and off the mill.
The time a dog is walked between sprints should be
the same as the time spent on the sprint. For example - 2 minutes on the mill and two minutes off. Only
the time on the mill should be counted as workout
time. If you have seen many matches between well
cponditioned dogs, you may have noticed that they
fight at a pretty fast, steady pace for about thirty minutes. After thirty minutes or so of hard fighting even
well conditioned dogs have to slow down and fight in
flurries. The pace I run a dog at on his steady treadmill work helps prepare him to fight fast and steady
for thirty minutes or so. The sprints of hard running
with walking breaks really makes his heart and lungs
work hard. It will help him recover fast and fight in
strong bursts after the thirty minute mark.
Some of the readers may wonder why I stop the
treadmill work at thirty minutes? Why not build the
dog up to two or even four hours of treadmill work a
day. Some trainers do use up to four hours or more
of millwork. I just don’t agree. I feel that at least 90%
of the endurance a dog can gain in millwork can be
gained in daily thirty minute workouts. Most dogs can
take thirty minutes on the mill and recover, rebuild,
and increase their endurance. Sure, another hour
or two on the treadmill might give your dog 5-10%
more endurance. Then again an extra hour or two
on the mill may break your dog down to where he
does not fully recover from each workout. It’s better to have a strong if slightly undertrained dog than
an overworked dog. A dog that runs the treadmill
thirty minutes a day for twenty-eight days is getting
all the work he needs. It’s foolish to risk overtraining
him for a small gain in endurance. Thirty minutes of
treadmill work a day was all I gave Diamond when
he beat Freddy Jones’ Major in a hard fight. Diamond
was strong enough to fight another hour when the
match ended. Most days Diamond got only twenty
minutes on the mill and a seven mile walk with no
other work. He was in super shape on this amount of
work. I worked Tater for his 2hr and 10 min. win over
the pit-ace Rastus from Maurice Carver. Tater was in
excellent condition from a daily thirty minutes on the
mill and a ten mile walk.
I like to use the steady millwork one day and the wind
sprint type work the next. The short hard sprints on
the mill are hard on a dog and he needs a day between them to fully recover. You can control the pace
most dogs run the mill at by talking to them or using
bait. Some dogs will pace themselves others have
only one speed full out. These dogs can easily strain
themselves if you don’t take them off the mill often.
Roadwork isn’t much different than millwork. Running is running whether on the mill or the road. Start
your dog with a 10 minute walk, then run him at a
moderate pace of about 8 mph starting with 16 minutes of running. Cool him down after his roadwork
with a long walk. Just as with the treadmill, thirty minutes a day is enough roadwork for any dog.
Two other types of workouts that can benefit your
dog are flirt and springpole work. The spring pole is
just a piece of rubber a dog can bite attached to a
heavy spring. A dog will tug on this and give himself a
good workout. It works his neck and jaws, and builds
the same muscles he’ll use in a fight. The flirt pole
is just a pole with a line and a feather attached. You
control it and make your dog chase the feather. With
the flirtpole you can have your dog make the same
quick turning movements he’ll make in a fight.
On the roadwork it is a fact that lots of bulldogs have
been killed by the truck or car while doing roadwork.
A bicycle is much safer. The three wheeler or ATV
with soft tires are also safe. The safest way of all is to
run with the dog in harness on a long lead. Of course
you must be in fair shape yourself to run far enough
and fast enough to give your dog a good workout. A
weighted harness that weighs about 5 lbs. will help
you give your dog a good workout with a thirty minute
run.
I have written out a conditioning program that combines walking, roadwork, and the treadmill. On this
program the dog gets his roadwork in the morning
and his millwork in the evening. You can give him
his millwork in the morning and roadwork at night it
makes no difference. On this program your dog will
PAGE 39
WWW.SPORTINGDOGJOURNAL.INFO
SPORTING DOG JOURNAL
AUGUST 2010
be walking 8 miles, running 5 miles, and doing 30
minutes of treadmill work on his hardest days. The
walking you do with the dog should be as fast as possible. I think this conditioning program has enough
work to put any dog in good fighting shape if followed
consistently. I don’t think it’s a hard enough keep to
overwork any young healthy pit-bull with good natural wind. You will notice I don’t give days off during
the training. I don’t like giving a full day off unless
the dog is feeling bad. A day off will cause a dog to
loose a little of the condition your working for. I prefer to give him easy days. An easy day will give him
some rest and still maintain and increase his endurance. Of course the three days before the fight you
should give him complete rest. This way he will be
completely rested for the match and able to use all
the conditioning he has gained. During the training
all the walking with the dog should be done as fast
as you can walk, about 4 mph for most people. However, the walking on the three days before the fight
should be done at a slow pace and no more than 2
miles per day. The purpose of walking on the last
three days is to keep the dog limber and give light
exercise.
Feeding
There is even more dispute over the proper feeding
of a pit dog than there is over the proper way of training him. I am going to give you what I think is a good
diet for a dog in training. It might be a lot different
from the diets you’ve heard about. If you don’t like
this diet then don’t use it. I promise you it will work
very well. In the old days a common diet was 4lbs. of
lean meat off the neck, and two pieces of toast. The
latest trend in feeding the pit-dog during training is
the high complex carbohydrate diet. Both of these
diets are wrong. Four pounds of lean beef is not a
balanced diet. The high carbohydrate diet works well
for human long distance runners but, it is a very poor
diet for a dog. Humans and certain animals like horses, sheep, cattle, etc. have a digestive system that
handles carbohydrates quite well. A dog is a meat
eater from a line of meat eaters. His digestive system does not handle large amounts of carbohydrates
well. A fox raids the henhouse and the wolves raid
the sheep. You don’t have to worry about chasing
stray dogs away from your corn or wheat fields. Meat
is a dogs natural food not carbohydrates. Still think
I am wrong? Try this simple test. Prepare a meal of
complex carbohydrates, corn, spaghetti, macaroni,
potatoes, bread, or any other type of complex carbohydrate meal you like. Offer your hungry dog a bowl
of fresh raw meat and a bowl of the complex carbohydrate meat at the same time. He will always eat
the meat first. He may not even eat the carbohydrate
meal at all. Anyone who uses the high carbohydrate
method to feed their dog during conditioning is at
a disadvantage. Carbohydrates are a good source
of energy for some animals and people. A dog gets
most of his energy from fat. Therefore putting a dog in
condition on a low fat diet is not good. Give your dog
a piece of fat and he will eat it faster then he would
eat anything else. Fat is a natural food for a dog, especially a hard working dog. If the high carbohydrate
diet is wrong, and the pure lean meat diet is wrong,
what is the correct diet for a dog during conditioning.
I would say a diet of about 38% protein, 32% fat,
and 30% carbohydrate, along with proper amounts
of vitamins and minerals and fiber or bulk is the best
diet. How do you get such a diet ? Start with one of
the highest grade commercial dog foods such as Science diet performance, or Waynes gold label. These
dog foods are 31% protein, 20% fat, 10% moisture,
4% fiber, and 35% carbohydrate. This is the main
part of his diet. Add to the commercial dog food one
ounce of raw liver, two ounces raw cheese, and three
ounces of raw hamburger with plenty ofgf fat in it. A
small dose of a good vitamin mineral supplement but
don’t overdo the vitamins. Enough vitamins is a good
thing but, you can overdose on certain vitamins A &
D • and they can be toxic. Before you start your dog’s
evening workout take him for a walk and empty him
out and then weigh him. This is his true empty weight
similar to the conditions before the weigh in on fight
day. Adjust the amount you feed him to his weight.
Feed the dog according to his work for the next day.
If he has a hard day coming feed him heavier than if
he has an easy day coming. Try and keep his weight
stable. He should weigh about the same every day.
Have your dog at or very close to pit weight by a
week before the fight. Don’t wait until the last couple
of days to take off weight because you’ll weaken him.
Remember a pound on a 4 0 lb. dog is the same
as 4 lbs. on a 160 lb. man. A man can’t lose more
than 3 or 4 lbs. a week without feeling weakened, so
don’t take more than a pound a week off your dog.

After he is cooled down from his work have clean
fresh water for him to drink at all times. Let the dog’s
thirst determine how much water he drinks. Don’t
ever withold water from your dog to make weight.
In other words DON’T dry your dog out. After a long
match a dog will be dehydrated from loss of fluidfds
and blood. If he came into the match already dry he
will be that much worse off. DON’T change his diet
the last days befgfore the fight. Just feed him somewhat less because he won’t be working it off. If you
have to travel with the dog get him to the pit site way
ahead of time so that he can rest and relax until fight
time. DON’T let anyone near him and watch him at
all times. I am often asked how to prevent someone
from rubbing their dog or poisoning your dog. I don’t
know any way to prevent it because it is not that hard
to rub a dog after the wash is over. The best way to
prevent being cheated is to avoid matching people
with a reputation of cheating. Picking the referee is
very important since his word is final as to the winner
of the match and on any dispute that comes up during the match. BEWARE of the setup of two friends
being the referee for each other. For instance Mr williams always referees mr smith’s matches and vice
versa and they don’t seem to lose when their pal is
the referee. Insist on a different referee. In fact it’s a
good idea to agree on a neutral referee at the time
you make the match. It is also a good idea to have
the referee and the stakeholder be the same man,
a man both you and your opponent can trust. Some
last words of advice, stay alert the day of the match
and pay attention to details. Watch after your dog.
Make sure he gets his rest and does not eat anything you don’t want him to eat. Never leave him unwatched. Stay sober until the fight is over and the
dog has been properly cared for. Sure, drink enough
to calm your nerves but, don’t drink enough to slow
you down. It could cost you the fight. If your dog’s life
is in danger pick him up regardless of who else has
bet on him. It’s better to pick up a dog 10 minutes
too early and lose some money than to pick up your
dog 1 minute too late and lose a fine dog as well.
You don’t have to worry about a cur getting killed in
a match because they will quit before their life is in
any danger. A Game Dog is the one you need to pick
up in time. Be sure to have everything with you that
you will need to give your dog proper after the battle
care. Have a friend with you that knows how to treat
a dog after a hard fight if you are not experienced at
this. Have a good vet that you can take your dog to
in a hurry if necessary.
Good Luck!
