Baseball Spring 2010 Media Guide CONFERENCE CHAMPIONS 1966*1968*1981*1983*1984 1985*1987 *1989*1997 NOR-CAL CHAMPS 1985 Located in dynamic downtown Oakland, Laney College offers excellent educational opportunities for the entire East Bay. A great source of pride and tradition for Laney College is it’s baseball program, established in 1966. Since it’s inception, Laney College has won 9 conference championships, 1 FINAL FOUR 1981*1983*1985*1993 Northern California championship, and made 1 appearance in the California Final Four championship tournament. Each year Laney College Baseball seeks to develop successful student-athletes through stressing the values of academic prowess, accountability, and persistence. Administration Dr. Elnora Webb Acting President Elñora Tena Webb became the Acting President of Laney College, the flagship of the Peralta Community College District, beginning January 2010. Located on the shores of Lake Merritt in downtown Oakland, Laney is home to more than 14,000 students and 500 professionals–faculty, classified staff and administrators. The college offers a wide-range of transfer programs to fouryear universities, career & technical education, foundation skills courses, training opportunities, and numerous enrichment and general education programs for both new and continuing students. Prior to her appointment as Acting President, Dr. Webb served as the Laney College Vice President of Instruction from 2005 – 2009, and before that, Dean of Humanities, Language Arts & Social Sciences from 2002 – 2005. Through-out her 30+ year career as an educator, Dr. Webb has served in a range of instructional, student services, research, and administrative roles within all systems of higher education in California. Those institutions included the Peralta Community College District, University of California at Berkeley and at Riverside, California State University at Sonoma, Stanford University, and Contra Costa Community College District. Dr. Webb was a member of the Community College Leadership program at U.C. Berkeley and completed her Ph.D. in Education with emphasis in Higher Education Administration/Policy. She also completed all coursework in the Organizational Behavior and Industrial Relations Ph.D. program of the Haas School of Business. She received a Master degree in Educational Administration from the San Francisco State University and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology & Education from U.C. Riverside. According to Dr. Webb, high quality education is the most efficient means to assure transformation of lives, families, communities, and the society in sustainable and healthy ways. She maintains the highest priority for equity in accessing academic excellence, especially for persons who have historically been locked out of sound educational resources. Administration Marco Menendez is the Dean of Fine and Applied Arts, Communications and Physical Education at Laney College. He joined Laney in 2007 with a over a decade of experience in teaching social sciences and the arts and another decade of experience in administration of recreation and performing arts in a wide variety of educational levels and settings. Previously, Menendez was the Director of Education at the Guangzhou Nanhu International School in China. Menendez speaks four languages including English, Spanish, Italian and Mandarin Chinese and holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in theatre studies-directing from Boston University and a Master’s degree in education-curriculum and instruction from Chapman University. Marco Mendedez Dean of Instruction Fine and Applied Arts, Communications and Physical Educaton John Beam Athletic Director John Beam has been the Athletic Director at Laney College for three years. He is also the Physical Education Department Chair, and the Offensive Coordinator for the Laney Eagle Football Team. He has helped coach the Laney Eagle Football Team to five consecutive bowl games and has been instrumental in maintaining Laney football team’s 90% graduation and transfer rate to four year university. He was recognized as the California State Coach of the year, as well as given the National Federation of State High Schools’ Western Regional Coach of the Year. The formal groundbreaking for the new athletic fields and field house took place on Nov. 23, but actual construction started in January. Planners hope that the project—which includes a new baseball field, field house and a parking lot—will be completed in 13 months, in time for the Laney baseball team to play on its new field in 2011. The baseball team will play its 2010 home games at the College of Alameda. The cost is estimated to be between $14-15 million with the money coming from Measure A funds that voters passed in 2006. Laney College Athletic Director John Beam hopes that the total cost will come in at around $14.2 million. “We’re two years behind schedule (in starting), but it is now moving forward and at a good rate,” he said. Phase One of the project will be a new 95-space parking lot that (hopefully) will alleviate the parking problems of students, faculty and staff. The lot will be at the corner of Eighth Street and Fifth Avenue and cars will be under a solar canopy that will generate solar power for the campus. Phases Two and Three will include an 18,000-square foot, two-story field house that will house classrooms, coaches’ offices and new separate athletic training facilities for men and women. The baseball field will have a synthetic turf, a new press box and groundskeeping facilities. All the phases are needed—parking is at a premium, coaches’ offices are small, male and female athletes must use the same training room facilities and the baseball field has never been renovated since it was built in the 1960s. What is important, Beam stresses, is that these fields and facilities are classrooms—instructional areas for a segment of the student population. “These are going to be huge classrooms out there where people can go every day and support what they have to do. It is important to remember that our coaches are instructors,” Beam said. The lack of separate women’s athletic training facilities has been a real concern; female athletes currently must venture into the training room that is located just outside the men’s locker room if they wish to receive treatment. The new field house, with separate treatment rooms for men and women, will eliminate that problem. “We are particularly excited that the training room will finally meet Title IX regulations and our women athletes will know that they are important to our program,” Beam said in a statement. The new training environment and classrooms will help improve Laney students’ performances in their chosen sports. Construction of this Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver-certified project is scheduled to be completed in February 2011. © Copyright 2010 Laney Tower Ground Breaking Ceremony at Laney College The formal groundbreaking for the new athletic fields and field house took place on Nov. 23, 2009. Remembering How it Was People will come...For reasons they can’t even fathom. They’ll walk out to the bleachers and sit in their shirtsleeves on perfect afternoon. They’ll find they have reserved seats somewhere along one of the base lines. It will be just like when they were children and cheered their heroes, and they’ll watch the game, and it will be as if they were dipped in magic waters. The memories will be so thick, they’ll have to brush them away from their faces... This field, this game, it’s part of our past. It reminds us of all that was once was good, and it could be again. Oh, People will come. People will most definitely come. - W.P.
