COMPOSERS FORUM O N T R A D I T I O N A L MUSIC
(ASEAN)
The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is a regional group made up of Brunei
Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. Among the many
intra-regional activities of a varied nature which occur within ASEAN, cultural activities
are an important component. These cultural activities are organised by the Committee on
Culture & Information (COCI). Music is a major activity within the whole because of the
rich and unique musical cultures and heritages in this region.
The Composers Forum on Traditional Music was inaugurated in 1989 in the Philippines. This
project allows composers, ethnomusicologists and traditional musicians within the region
to meet and interact over a two-week period in one of the ASEAN countries with the
express purpose of generating ideas, concepts and musical compositions done exclusively
within the perimeters of the traditional musical cultures of ASEAN and excluding Western
music; the rationale for this being that, there is need for such exclusive interaction in order
to achieve greater understanding and appreciation of the traditional music of this region
and without the usual "clouding" by Western Music which exists extensively under the
broad term of "fusion music".
The 2nd Composers Forum held in Singapore, 11-24 April 1993, had as its theme
EVOLVING TRADITIONS which allowed the Forum to review traditional music within the
back-drop of the rapidly modernising and developing situation in the various ASEAN
countries. Presentations by fifteen traditional music organisations and educational institutions
from Singapore and five "country papers" from the ASEAN countries have been compiled
and published as the FORUM PAPERS and available separately.
The Composers Forum also generated compositions which were performed in Singapore
at the end of the Forum. A large amount of traditional music was performed during the
forum presentations. These performances and the Forum Compositions generated have
been recorded and produced into these two Compact Discs:
DISC 1 - NEW MUSIC COMPOSITIONS
DISC 2 - TRADITIONAL MUSIC OF SINGAPORE
These are the first compact disc recordings to be released by the Composers Forum.

"AJOYA" - Indonesia
Composed and performed by the delegates from Indonesia:
I Wayan Diya, Hajizar Bin Mustafa and Joko Purwanto
The title "AJOYA" is coined from the names of the composersAjizar/Joko/Diya. The composition draws from Indian and
Indonesian music in an eclectic manner and largely because
these skills are omni-present in the artists, particularly
Wayan Diya, who is a renowned Balinese dancer and musician
and who has also studied South Indian music and dance.
The work is built upon the principle of "circles within a
circle", an analogy to ripples on water or to that of the
"Chakravati" emanating radial energy. It uses the SindhuBhairavi "Raga" of South India, the "Pelog" of Bali and Java
as well as vocal principles of Balinese "Cak" and Achinese
"Saman-Saman".
The work employs a number of Indonesian instrumentsdrums, gongs, "siter", flutes and voice.

"ALINGNAWGNAW" - Philippines
Composer : Ramon P Santos, a leading contemporary music
composer in the Philippines and Professor of music at the
University of the Philippines.
Performers:Siong Leng Musical Association, a premier Hokkien
music ensemble from Singapore.
This work is based on the musical aspects of "Hokkien"
(also known as "Nan-Yin") music. After being acquainted
with the music for only one week, Santos wrote this work
concentrating on individual tones, timbre cells and melodic
motifs which evolve in semi-cyclic developments and variations.
The "Nan-Yin" principle of slow but deliberate unfolding of
the musical materials is strongly adhered to. The instruments
of the ensemble are treated individually with the principle
statements of the music played by the D O N G X I A O (flute)
and ER-HU (bowed two-string). The other instruments include
the S A N - X I A N (plucked three-string), ER-XIAN (plucked
two-string) and percussion.

Malaysia.

The Malaysian delegation with a large number of Forum
participants.

This work attempts to blend various elements of Malay and
Indian music on the lines of the "retro-traditional" movement
currently underway in Malaysia. This movement seeks to
make the expression of trditional music and musical concepts
relevant to the contempory world. The work is built upon
episodic development in which a characteristic number of
melodic patterns, ornaments and aesthetic flavours from
Malay and Indian Music inter-play and lend towards building
the form.

"TIME" - Singapore
Composer:Joseph E E Peters, a Singapore composer who
does work in a number of idioms and mediums and currently
focusing on Asian concepts and forms for composition.
Performers:The Singapore Indian Orchestra (SIO) the only
one of its kind in the country, which grew out of widespread
desire to experiment on a selection from among a vast array
of Indian instrumentalists available locally. The SIO is a
project of the People's Association, a national body coordinating and administering the widespread system of community
centres in Singapore.
The SIO is conducted for this recording by guest-conductor,
Radha Vijayan, a talented and versatile musician from India
who is attached to the Nrityalaya Aesthetics Society in
Singapore.
This short work is based on the few opening lines of the
poem "Time" from the Mahabharata epic, the English translation
of which was done by P Lal. The work is written in the "Kapi
Raga"and uses half-segments of the "Adi-Taia" (16 beat
rhythmic cycle). In this work the composer explores contrapuntal
possibilities for the expression of Indian music.

"HUMIGIT-KUMULANG" - Philippines
Composer: Josefino "Chino" Toledo, is a leading member of
the new generation of young Filipino composers and has
great capacity to write in a variety of styles. He heads
composition studies at the College of Music, University of
the Philippines.
Performers:The Singapore Hadrah & Kompang Association
led by Ahmad Bin Mohamed Ishak. This association plays a
central role in the propagation of this genre of music in
Singapore. "Hadrah" and "Kompang" are "Rebana" (handdrum) bands which are capable of playing complex interlocking
rhythms, sometimes accompanying chants and/or songs sung
by the drummers themselves.
The composer has ingeniously crafted this work which
explores the rhythmic capabilities of the group. He also
uses a tape-recorder in his formalistic structure to provide
a musical contrast to the live performers. The tape uses
excerpts he recorded earlier with the group and subtlely
manipulated. The work has three phases - opening with the
live performers performing rhythmic patterns, then the
tape recorder and then reverting to the live performers
who improvise within a stipulated structure.

"FAR AWAY FROM HOME" -Thailand
Composer: Pasakorn Suwanaphan, a versatile young Thai
Composer who can adapt to many styles easily. He heads
the pool of Instructors of the Royal Thai Navy Music Division.
Performers: Siong Leng Musical Association of Singapore.
The composer has written "mood" music as a challenge to
this traditional "Nan-Yin" ensemble, but allows the musicians
to express the composition in their own characteristic
style. The work is structured as a "tour of emotions" from
a state of being sad and lonely to one of re-conciliation and
hope.
The traditional "Nan-Yin" ensemble is used for this work:
Pipa, Dong-Xiao, Er-Hu, Er-Xian, San-Xian and Percussion.

"RAGAM S E N I " - Brunei Darussalam
Composer: Haji Abdul Manaf Bin Haji Khamis, a major composer
in Brunei who served a long career as Director of Music in
the armed services.
Performers:The members of the Indonesian delegation: Joko
Purwanto, Hajizar Bin Mustafa and vocal performance by I
Wayan Diya.
This work was inspired by the superb Forum presentation by
Wayan Diya of the "Kinanti" style of Javanese folk-song
flavoured by his own expertise in the unique method of
Balinese vocalising. The lyrics are in the "Kinanti" form and
the music utilises Pelog (Bali) and Slendro (Java) tonalities.
