A LETTER FROM THE DIRECTORS
Greetings, Kippewa families!
It’s finally that time... the final month
before camp! As we are busy
preparing for everyone’s
arrival we know you are busy
self-addressing envelopes, collecting
addresses, and tackling the packing list, all while trying to finish out the
school year. It is a busy time, and an exciting time! This is also that time
of the year when camper, and parent, anxieties may start to surface.
Please do not be concerned - this is normal! We are here to help and
happy to talk through any concerns you may have.
Please make sure you have submitted your forms, payments and
travel plans. We must know how your daughter(s) are getting to camp
to make sure we have chaperones in place and enough seats on the
bus! Please also make sure you spend some time going over our
Camper Code of Conduct (located in your myKippewa account) with your
daughter. We provide a safe, warm, friendly and accepting environment
and want to make sure everyone is on the same page heading into the
summer.

When filling out your daughter’s Travel and Baggage form, please
be as detailed as possible. We want to make sure that we know
exactly how she will be arriving at camp! If you have any specific
details that you need to discuss, please feel free to contact us.

Since we began
our Kippy library
a few years
ago, we have
watched the
selection grow through generous
donations from our Kippewa Families
and staff. The Library has become a
popular part of our camp culture! We
are excited to add even more to our
already extensive collection in order
to provide even more selections for
Kippy girls to read each summer. If
you have old books hanging around,
and would like to see them find a
happy new home…think of us! We
will happily take them off your hands.
We are always looking for additions
to our costume department, we
need your help! Before turning that
old prom dress into rags or tossing
out Grandpa’s plaid jacket, please
send it to us at camp. We welcome
any clothing and/or accessories that
you would like to share with our
playhouse. Kippy’s future thespians
appreciate your help!
EVA’S VIEW
With spring sports happening, flowers blooming, and
birds chirping, we are well into the Spring season,
which means camp will be here very soon! Whether it’s
your first or fourth time coming to Kippewa, I’m sure you
are feeling excited and nervous all at the same time - and
that’s okay! I still get a little nervous myself, there is always something
new and exciting about the start of camp. I want to help give you an
outline of what to expect when you arrive into camp.
The staff at Kippewa will be so excited to meet you! By the time you arrive,
they will have already been at camp for a whole week (and some even
longer) in preparation to meet you and plan for your arrival. When you
first drive into camp, you will meet your bunk counselors and some of
your bunkmates. You’ll then head over to The Pillbox (our Health Center)
where our wonderful nurses, Debbie, Anne and Ariel, will do a quick
general health check and you will get your head checked for lice by the
wonderful technicians from Lice Treatment Center. After that, together with
your bunk counselors and bunkmates, you will head to your bunk to begin
unpacking and settle in.
Your bunk will be decorated and we assign beds ahead of time, so you
don’t need to worry about claiming one or be worried about how you will
choose. Once you are settled and unpacked, your counselors will help you
make your bed and put your clothes away. The afternoon will be filled with
playing get-to-know you games and tours of camp.
For dinner, the whole camp will come together in The Lodge to eat and
you will sit with your bunkmates and counselors. Once we all finish eating,
you’ll get a little glimpse of true Kippy spirit as we all dance and sing in
The Lodge (as we do after every meal) to welcome the Summer of 2014!
After dinner, everyone will be introduced to their Camp Sisters. Camp
Sisters are in many ways an instant friend, and if it is your first summer
at Kippy, you are placed with someone who has been to camp before.
They can help teach you about camp traditions, and help make sure that
you are loving camp just as much as they are. Together with your camp
sister, you will participate in our first evening activity: World Records. Many
different activities will be set up around camp (by this point, you will really
start knowing where everything is), and with your camp sister you will try
and set the “World Record” in different silly games!
By the end of Evening Activity, it will be time to head back to your bunk for
bedtime. You will surely be exhausted and ready for a good night of sleep!
Hopefully you now have an idea of what to expect when you arrive. Most
importantly, don’t be afraid to ask questions; we are here to help! I can’t
wait to see you all in Maine!

HARDY GIRLS, HEALTHY WOMEN - GIRLS ROCK AWARD
As part of our ongoing commitment to supporting the development of healthy, strong, confident
young women we are proud to be supporters of Hardy Girls, Healthy Women (HGHW).
Hardy Girls, Healthy Women is “a nonprofit organization dedicated to the health and well being of
girls and women”. Their vision is “that all girls and women experience equality, independence, and
safety in their everyday lives” and their mission is “to create opportunities, develop programs, and
provide services that empower them”.
We have been fortunate to attend workshops put on by HGHW staff during the off-season, and we have welcomed
HGHW at our staff orientation to help share their message with our counselors as we head into the summer. We enjoy
keeping up to date with their projects and materials and we often find great resources through HGHW for articles to
read, books to share and messages to spread to support both their vision, and ours.
This winter, Kippewa joined together with 9 other all-girls camps in Maine to sponsor the Girls Rock Health Advocacy
award, which was awarded by Hardy Girls, Healthy Women. The 2014 award was given to Mana Abdi, an 18 year old
senior at Lewiston High School in Lewiston, Maine.
“Mana wanted to run cross country and track, which challenged tradition in her Somali community. By choosing
respect and communication as her tools, Mana was able to challenge, and in many cases, change this point of view.
She became the first Somali female to win a cross country meet in the state of Maine, and as she blazes the trail for
Somali girls to run, some are already following her around the track and on the course.
We are happy to support Mana and proud of her efforts and the recognition she received.”

DUNK YOUR KICKS AND
SOCIAL ACTION AT KIPPEWA!
We are excited to join other Maine Camp Experience camps to partner once again with Max Cure
Foundation’s “Dunk Your Kicks” program - something all of our Kippy girls and families can
get involved in! Max Cure Foundation is a public charity dedicated to advancing cures
for pediatric cancer. Used “kicks” are “dunked” into recycling bins and sold worldwide in
developing countries and to organizations working with low income families. The funds
raised from these sales are all put towards Max Cure Foundation’s cause.
So... we need your help! Send us your Kicks!! Shoes must be used sneakers, shoes used for
tennis, basketball, running, light hiking and walking trails (other types of footwear not accepted for this program).
Any size, and gender. You can ship them to us or send them to camp on the bus or in your bags.
We are also excited to announce a DUNK YOUR KICKS ART POSTER CONTEST. The selected
artwork will be made into the Dunk Your Kicks poster that will appear on the recycle bins at all the
participating MCE Maine camps. The artist’s name will be featured on the poster and s/he will
receive special recognition. Entries will be accepted May 15-June 15.

We are also proud to announce that we will once again be working with our 9th grade campers to bring socialaction initiatives to Kippewa. Interested 9th grade campers will work with staff advisors to create and carry out
their own project! Last summer the 9th graders led campers in making toys for dogs and cats housed in a local
animal shelter and then delivered them to the grateful animals. The possibilities are wide-open, so start thinking
now ladies about causes and projects you might like to implement this summer!
We are excited for the continued expansion of community service/social action programs at Kippewa!
LICE TREATMENT CENTER (LTC) PARTNERSHIP
As we announced in the 2014 Family handbook, we have partnered with Lice Treatment Center (LTC), a professional
company, to inspect each child’s head upon arrival to camp. LTC will treat anyone who arrives with nits and/or live lice. If
a camper arrives at camp needing to be treated, Kippewa will bill parents for lice treatment at a cost of $375 per camper.
For more information on Lice Treatment Center and their treatment methods and products go to www.licetreatmentcenter.
net. While we rarely find lice, we feel it is safer to examine each child rather than risk exposing others. Please be sure
to check your daughters’ head periodically for several weeks prior to heading to camp! We will also be bringing Lice
Treatment Center back at the end of the session to check campers before sending them home.

Meet our amazing staff!
ALAN CLAREWATERSKI DIRECTOR
Aidan and Brett’s “Poppa”, Alan,
will be joining us for his seventh
season heading up the water ski
program at Kippewa, which he
affectionately calls his favorite
place on earth. Alan hails from New Zealand where
he has been coaching and competing in waterskiing
at national and international levels for many years. He
won a number of age group national barefoot waterski
titles himself but realized later that his real talent was
in coaching. He coached Steve (Kippewa director) to
two New Zealand national titles before being asked
to coach the New Zealand barefoot waterski team, a
position he held for 15 years. Upon retiring from that
position he returned to coaching children, guiding
three young skiers to world championship level.
Don’t worry, yes he knows the basics too, including
waterskiing with one or two skis, and even using a
wakeboard!
Alan believes “if it’s not fun it’s not worth doing”. His
infectious “Kiwi” humor means everyone has fun while
learning! With his experience and expertise Alan and
the other waterski instructors will once again ensure
that the Kippewa girls receive the very best waterski
coaching available.
ASHLEY DAVIS- LANDSPORTS
DIRECTOR
Ashley has been with Camp
Kippewa since 2010. Ashley’s love
for camp is evident in everything
she does at Kippewa. She is
returning this summer for her
second year as our Landsports
Director. She started working at Kippewa as an
equestrian counselor, although she also has a ton of
experience playing soccer, basketball and lacrosse.
Ashley enjoys making Landsports both challenging
and fun for our campers. She can’t wait to put the new
Gaga pit to use this summer! You will be able to find
Ashley out on Fenway and in our Pavilion, equipped
with a smile, and likely, a wolf t-shirt!
BRITTANY BRUENING - ARTS DIRECTOR
Brittany is back for summer number four
this year as Kippewa’s Art’s Coordinator!
She is very excited to continue to improve
the fabulous art programs already at camp
and can’t wait to introduce a brand new
film program this summer. Since 2011 she has enjoyed her time
at Kippewa as a bunk counselor for all three age divisions as
well as being a Dance and Ceramics instructor. Some of her
favorite Kippy moments include dancing in the Lodge and
watching the talented campers perform at campfire each week!
Brittany received her BFA focusing in Ceramics and Printmaking
from The University of Wisconsin Madison this past May. Go
Badgers! During the off season she spends her free time
dancing, making art, and spending time with family and friends
in Milwaukee Wisconsin.
DEBBIE VILARDI- HEAD NURSE
Debbie is not only our RN in residence for
the 14th season, but she is a dear friend to
all Kippewa families. Debbie works hard
taking care of all of us. If we need a hug or
are feeling under the weather a quick trip
to Nurse Debbie in the Pillbox will fix all. Debbie graduated from
nursing school in Casanovia College in New York State. When
she is not at Kippy watching the pure enjoyment of life and
nature, she is homeschooling her children. All 6 children have
been home schooled by Debbie and “it has been my pride and
joy to work with my kids every day”.
ED CUNNINGHAM- ARTS COORDINATOR
AND TRADITIONS MASTER
This will be Ed’s 48th (yes, really!!) summer
at Kippewa. We are thrilled to have him
lead us in the many arts & crafts activities
that Kippewa has to offer. Ed believes that
our campers learn by having fun. Ed loves working with the kids
and reports, “we have so much fun together.” This certainly is
proven true when we see Ed working with the OCs, organizing
the clam bake or in the Woodshop (crowned in 2011 as “Ed’s
Place”). One event Ed has never seen is our traditional Ice Man
ceremony. For some reason Ed can never be found when the Ice
Man appears!

Ed (or Coach Cunningham) recently retired from
Bridgewater Regional High School where he spent many
years coaching the high school football team. As a
retired teacher, Ed fills his little spare time by painting. He
currently has 20 paintings being shown at a gallery in
Massachusetts. We feel so fortunate to have Ed on board
for another fantastic season!

Joce and her family are looking forward to seeing all of

KRISTIN COLLINS- BARN MANAGER
ELLA BRAKEFIELD- ASSISTANT HEAD
COUNSELOR
Kristin will be joining the Kippewa
crew for her fourth summer. This
summer she will be keeping a careful
eye on the ponies and campers up
at the barn as the barn manager.
Ever since her first summer, she can
not picture a summer without Kippewa!! She has ridden
horses since the age of 8 and has competed in both 4-H
and United States Pony Club events. Kristin has been
teaching riding lessons for six years and continues to still
learn more and more every day!
After spending the past four
incredible summers working at
Kippewa’s beautiful barn Ella is
broadening her horizons this summer
and will be working with Eva as the
Assistant Head Counselor. Originally
from London, England Ella graduated from Aberystwyth
University with a degree in English Literature in 2010. She
now lives in Edinburgh, Scotland and works in the summer
camp industry, recruiting international camp counselors
for 200 camps- Kippewa included! There is not a day that
goes by when she doesn’t think about camp; she cannot
wait to get back to Kippy this summer! When not at work
she spends a lot of time with her big, grey horse Echo
who loves swimming in the sea and galloping through
the woods by her barn. Ella lives, eats and breathes camp
and cannot wait to meet all the new staff and campers
and reconnect with the returning Kippy girls!
A native of Gardiner Maine, just a short ten minute
drive from Kippewa. Out in the “real world” she is an
Educational Technician in a special education program at
Gardiner Middle School and is also the junior varsity field
hockey coach at Gardiner High School. Kristin can not
wait to be back at camp and see all of her camp family!
MARGARET STOCKARD OPERATIONS DIRECTOR
JOCELYN DOWLINGWATERFRONT DIRECTOR
2014 will be summer number six for
Margaret. For the past three years
she has served as the Upper Senior
Division Head but will be taking on a
new role this year as the Operations
Director. In the past, she has also assisted with tennis
classes, creative writing/newsletter classes and various
other activities and is excited to dive into this new role.
She originally emanates from Sweet Home Alabama (Roll
Tide!) but spent a few years up north in the Boston area
until recently moving back to Alabama. As a care provider
during the year, she pretty much spends all of her time
around kids! She cannot wait to get back to Maine and
see old faces and meet new ones. You might find her
sporting some neon by the lake or writing a poem, as
she studied English in college and is currently working on
some writing projects. Her goal is to get some children’s
books published as well as more poetry while she
continues to learn as much as she can from the wonderful
Jocelyn and her family
are very excited to be
returning to the Kippy
waterfront this summer!
She lives in New Brunswick, Canada with her husband,
Luke and their 4 children. Jocelyn has grown up in and
around the water whether it be canoeing, kayaking or
competitive swimming. She has been a lifeguard and
swim instructor since she was 15 years old. Jocelyn’s
swimming career brought her to University of Guelph
where she competed nationally for 5 years while studying
to become a Certified Athletic Therapist. Since then she
has been working for the Mount Allison University athletes
as their Head Athletic Therapist.
Jocelyn’s free time is spent with her very active family
including, Ethan (age 5), Will (age 4), Annabelle (age 2)
and Christopher (age 6 months). They love to be outdoors,

young people she meets every year. She also sponsors a
boy in Uganda and a boy in Tanzania and plans to one
day visit them both. Oh, and you will most likely see her
at campfire or two playing her djembe (African drum). She
has even been known to jam to a Justin Bieber song or
two, and she now plans to incorporate One Direction in her
drumming repertoire!

Matt, Kippy’s program director, has nearly 30 years of
professional experience working with children. Following
a career in journalism, Matt began his teaching career in
1994. He earned the country’s highest teaching credential,
National Board Certification, in 2010. A two-time teacherof-the-year in the School District of Philadelphia, Matt was
selected for inclusion in Who’s Who Among America’s
Teachers four times and is a three-time Disney America’s
Teacher Award nominee. Matt brings with him over 15
years of summer camp leadership experience and an
insatiable desire for fun!
MARY PAIGE KOWALSKI EQUESTRIAN DIRECTOR
Growing up in Cameron, South
Carolina, Mary Paige spent every
summer going to camp, starting in
2nd grade up through her senior
year of high school. Once in college she couldn’t just leave
summer camp as a thing of her past so she became a
camp counselor. This summer will be her 20th summer
at camp and her 10th summer running an Equestrian
Program (6th year at Kippewa)!
Jackie (or “J”) brings considerable skill and experience
to her role in Kippy’s office and operations department.
Following a 17-year career in college administration, Jackie
earned a second Master’s degree and became a full-time
teacher in Philadelphia, in 2008. Jackie was the Association
for Continuing Higher Education’s Educator of the Year
in 2005, and is a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Honor
Society. She has a love (and the talent!) for musical theater
and has extensive summer camp leadership experience, in
addition to a few summers as a camper herself!
Mary Paige loves Kippewa because it reminds her of what
camp was like when she went as a camper: full of life and
fun camp excitement within the setting of the beautiful
outdoors. Mary Paige had her first pony ride at a zoo in
Canada when she was five years old and was hooked!
She rode on the South Carolina Progressive Show Jumpers
Circuit showing hunters for a few years and then went off
to college. In college she rode on the Clemson University
Equestrian team where she was also team president.
Most recently, Mary Paige has become certified as a Level
III Certified Horsemanship Association (CHA) Instructor and
is eager to bring her level of expertise to the Kippy Stables.
MIKE DAVIS-TENNIS DIRECTOR
Mike is Kippewa’s very own King of
the Courts where he reigns over our
6 all-weather hard courts. Mike’s
enthusiasm, love for sports, and
friendships with the campers and staff
are the reason why Mike is making
his 13th trip to Maine from Kingston,
Jamaica. He began his camping career just down the
street, at Camp Cobbossee, but when Kippy was looking
for a Tennis Director, he knew that was where he needed
to be!
While studying at Clemson Mary Paige earned a degree in
Equine Business and met her husband, Yuri, who grew up
in Maine. Mary Paige now conveniently lives only 10 miles
from Kippewa! Mary Paige and her daughter, Elizabeth,
can’t wait for another summer at Kippewa; we know
Elizabeth is a Kippy girl at heart!
A faculty member at The Queens Preparatory School in
Kingston, Jamaica, Mike teaches Physical Education as
well as Tennis to children ages 6-12 in the winters (well,
if you can call it winter down in sunny Jamaica). He is
also a tennis pro, offering lessons to adults and children
throughout the year. Mike’s giant smile and infectious laugh
make him a huge part of life at Kippewa! There is no doubt
that after taking a tennis lesson with Mike, you will be
hooked.

RACHEL ZACHER - ROPES
DIRECTOR
ETIENNE PALMER - TRIPS COORDINATOR
Etienne is excited to be joining Kippewa for
her first summer as our Trips Coordinator.
A native of Utah, she grew up loving the
outdoors and teaches Kindergarten during the year.
She completed her masters degree in Early Education.
Etienne spent last summer volunteering at a school in
the Marshall Islands and is excited about her upcoming
summer in Maine. She is looking forward to sharing her
love of adventure with Kippy girls as she coordinates trips
and get involved in the fun of camp life.
Rachel is ecstatic for her first
summer at Kippewa and the
opportunity to be the Ropes Director!
She is joining us from Keystone,
Colorado where she teaches
Environmental Education to students
of all ages. While this is her first summer at Kippewa,
it will be her 8th summer working at a camp! Rachel
earned her BS in Elementary Education at Winona State
University in Winona, Minnesota. She is a true lover of
the outdoors and is excited to explore Maine and all it
has to offer. While living in the Rocky Mountains she can
often be found rock climbing outdoors, skiing, hiking,
carving spoons, and teaching everyone she can about
the amazing world around us. She is excited to show
everyone a ‘rockin’ summer and tell some silly jokes

Summer seven for Richard, Hooray
Hooray! Richard is currently turning
cartwheels in celebration of his
return to the glory of Camp Kippewa.
He resides in NYC where is the the Administrative, Event,
and Design Manager of the New York Zen Center for
Contemplative Care. He is eagerly awaiting spending
time with all of the campers and staff, along with his
besties, Elizabeth, Aidan, Brett, Ethan, Will and of course,
Alan.
JESUS AGUIRRE - THEATER
DIRECTOR
Jesus is thrilled to be returning to
Kippewa for his 5th summer! After
working as our camp photographer
for the past few years he will taking
on a new role as our Theater Director this summer.
He would like to thank Ginger and Steve for their
boundless kindness in offering him another summer of
joy, bliss and enlightenment. Richard will be joining us for
the start of first session, working with Jesus in the theatre
program along with helping out with whatever else is
needed around camp. He is sorry he will miss the second
session girls this summer, however he is looking forward
to seeing the first session girls this time around!
Jesus grew up loving nature due to of his mom’s love for
the outdoors. Even though he lives in Mexico City with
almost 10 million people he is fortunate enough to have
a big garden at home. Summers in the beautiful Maine
Woods reminds him of his adventures exploring the
surrounding mountains of Mexico City.
Jesus has worked in all aspects of theater for years and
has performed in a variety of locations all around Mexico.
Theater is his passion. Jesus believes that when you are
on stage you have the chance to experience different
parts of yourself, and that has a powerful effect on how
you perceive yourself and your interaction with others.
WILLIAM REDMOND - HEAD CHEF
William is excited to be joining
Kippewa as our Head Chef. He
most recently has been working
as Executive Chef managing
catering companies and healthcare
systems throughout Florida. His previous experiences
include starting fine dining restaurants, running cooking
demonstrations, and spending summers as Head Chef
for a co-ed camp in the Adirondacks. He is excited to be
back in the camp environment and is looking forward to
bringing his extensive culinary experiences and passion
for good, healthy food to Kippewa’s lodge.
Jesus is very much looking forward to his 5th summer
at camp and can’t wait to continue his strong memories
of friendship, teamwork and commitment. He can’t wait
to see all of the Kippy girls, especially everyone who will
be joining him for a fun, exciting and creative time in
Theater this summer. He can hardly wait to see you all
in Maine!

SPRING FLING!!!
The first weekend of May new and returning Kippewa girls met up in New York for our annual “Kippewa Spring Fling”.
This was a great opportunity for returning campers to reunite, new campers to meet other girls coming to camp
and for everyone to get to know some of our staff. The girls participated in some entertaining icebreakers, enjoyed
making bracelets in Kippewa colors, celebrated a birthday in the typical cake-throwing Kippy style, and talked about
the upcoming summer. New friendships were formed, old friends were reunited, and Kippewa girls enjoyed a great
introduction to camp and a head start to summer!
